03:13Rodri is Man of the Tournament.
03:14Let me turn to tonight's top story.
03:17What began as a chalo sunset march turned into a day of dramatic clashes in the heart of the national
03:23capital.
03:24Tear gas, police action, protesters spilt across the capital.
03:29And finally, the Modi government even opened talks with the Kokhrut Janata Party.
03:34All of this, of course, on the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament.
03:38The big story, whether the youth anger demanding the resignation of the education minister over the neat paper leaks
03:45and indeed a general sense of dissatisfaction with the education system is here to stay or is it momentary?
03:53Let's take a look first at how the day unfolded today.
03:58Take a look.
04:17The Kokhrut Janata Party's Chalo Sunset protest march on Monday spiraled into one of the most volatile standoffs the national
04:26capital has seen in recent times.
04:34Thousands of youngsters reached Jantar Mantar early in the day to take part in the march.
04:43The police clamped down in preparation, shutting down internet in the area and closing metro stations in the vicinity.
04:52The authorities had already imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS in the New Delhi district.
05:03Around 10.20 a.m., the first reports of Lathi charge came.
05:20As crowds swelled, protesters tried to break through barricades and the police fired tear gas shells.
05:27So, you can see, you can see the rear cover, which will have to try to use tear gas, which
05:45was named after the common mica.
05:45As you can see, we are observing the other cars in the military district.
05:45The police are following in the direction of the railway station.
05:47The rail is there.
05:49The border half is in front of the sunset field.
06:00As protesters raged outside, parliament's security was tightened.
06:04Some gates were shut.
06:08The crackdown meant the crowds dispersed.
06:14We want accountability. I'm a medical student myself.
06:17So we just want accountability. We want him to resign.
06:19You want the education minister to go.
06:22Of course, 100%.
06:22We're not scared. It's just that there was tear gas out there, which is why we had to move.
06:26This is a very natural reaction to tear gas. Nobody's scared.
06:29We are students. We are just normal students.
06:32They're doing this to us.
06:34We just want one thing.
06:37That Dharmendra Pradhan, he was not able to do his job properly.
06:40We just want his resignation. That's all.
06:44Protesters shifted to other locations,
06:46like India Gate, Rajiv Chowk Metro Station, cannot place.
06:53Even as both sides claimed injuries,
06:56the police urged protesters to maintain peace.
07:26During the day, many opposition leaders,
07:29joined the protests to show solidarity.
07:33The Narendra Modi government reached out to the protesters for the first time.
07:37Union Health Minister J.P. Nada met CJP's spokesperson,
07:41Saurabh Das and Ashutosh Ranka.
07:44The CJP made three demands.
07:47Release of Sonam Vangchuk with no prohibition of his movements.
07:52Resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan
07:54and 1 crore rupees compensation to families of all NEET aspirants
07:59who died by suicide following the paper leak this year.
08:10Away from the cameras, another meeting took place
08:13between Home Minister Amit Shah and Dharmendra Pradhan.
08:16This one lasted more than three hours,
08:19but what transpired is not known.
08:24Activist Sonam Vangchuk remained in hospital.
08:27His wife Gitanjali said he would end his fast
08:30if political leaders met him
08:32and assured that the issue of accountability in education
08:36would be raised in Parliament.
08:39Meanwhile, CJP chief Abhijit Deepke,
08:42who had gone on a hunger strike after the detention of Vangchuk,
08:46ended his fast.
08:50The march that saw thousands participate
08:53was the first to take place in the heart of the capital
08:56since the Nirbhaya and the Anahazare Andolans.
09:01With Preeti Chaudhary, Mausmi Singh,
09:04Piyush Mishra, Ashwarya Paliwal
09:06and Shivani, Bureau Report, India Today.
09:13My first guest, who I spoke to a short while ago,
09:16is Saurav Das, one of the chief spokespersons
09:19of the Kokhrut Janata Party.
09:21Saurav, appreciate you joining us.
09:22I know these are tough times for you.
09:24You're just out of hospital
09:25where you met Sonam Vangchuk.
09:28And do you want to tell us
09:31where your protests stand as of now?
09:34We are talking late this evening.
09:36Will these protests continue into tomorrow?
09:38Will Sonam Vangchuk's fast continue?
09:41What's the status on that front, Saurav?
09:44Saurav, can you give us an update first?
09:48Saurav, can you give us an update first?
09:49See, as of now, the fast also continues.
09:53And the protest also continues.
09:56So, the police has completely destroyed
09:58Jantramantar protest site
10:01where our stage was,
10:03where everything was set up.
10:04So, the police has completely destroyed that place.
10:08So, right now,
10:09we are right next to that protest site
10:11in the Jantramantar road,
10:13very close to Kerala house.
10:15That is where we are stationed.
10:16And there are hundreds of people
10:19who are sitting in peacefully.
10:21And the police is probably trying to move them
10:24at this point.
10:25But everybody is fearless
10:27and they know they are on the right side.
10:30But the police claims, Saurav,
10:32that the protest turned violent at some stage,
10:34both in the morning and then later in the afternoon.
10:36There was stone pelting.
10:37We can see visuals of that.
10:39Policemen have been injured.
10:40The police says they will file cases
10:42against those responsible.
10:43Who were these people?
10:45I mean, did the protest,
10:46which turned violent for a while
10:48and led to tear gassing,
10:50who were the people responsible for this violence?
10:53Were they from the CJP or from somewhere else?
10:59Last night, Ashutosh Ranka had tweeted
11:03that, you know,
11:04there was a very old van
11:07which was stationed very close to Jantramantar
11:09where, you know,
11:11our volunteers had found
11:13many, many bags with stones.
11:15So we had put that out on social media as well.
11:18And when we met the police in the morning,
11:21we told the DCP
11:22that there is a suspicious van like this
11:24with a lot of stones in it.
11:26So we don't know who placed it there.
11:28We informed the police
11:31at night itself,
11:32but then they didn't take any action
11:34until we personally met the DCP
11:36and told him this in the early morning.
11:39You know, you're saying that there was a van there
11:42with stones since last night
11:43which you had informed the cops,
11:45but isn't it possible
11:47that there were anti-social elements,
11:49people who had nothing to do
11:50with your original protest
11:53over Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation
11:54who have now infiltrated this protest.
11:57That could be possible, isn't it?
12:01As is with any protest,
12:03the same script is repeated again and again.
12:07Antisocial elements might as well
12:09have tried to, you know,
12:10derail the protest,
12:11but overall the protest was very peaceful.
12:15Of course, protests,
12:16there were a lot, lot of protesters.
12:19Some numbers say there were about
12:20a lack of protesters
12:21who were at New Delhi district.
12:23And I'm told the protests are still going on,
12:26not just in Jantar Mantar premises,
12:29but also at Janpath and Cannot Place.
12:32So, you know,
12:34it was no longer about CJP only,
12:36it was all Sonam Vangchuk only.
12:38It was about the larger dissatisfaction
12:40with this government and its policies.
12:42You know, that's interesting.
12:43You're saying that the protests
12:44are no longer about Sonam Vangchuk
12:46or CJP and its demands only,
12:48but you and Ashutosh Ranka
12:50met J.P. Nadda,
12:52the BJP leader and union minister.
12:54And many are questioning
12:55what prompted you all to go
12:57and meet the ministers
12:58at a time when your fellow protesters
13:00were out on a march.
13:02Was this an attempt by the government
13:04to reach out to you belatedly
13:06or was it you who reached out to the government?
13:08Can you explain this meeting that took place
13:10and what happened at your meeting with Mr. Nadda?
13:15See, we've been trying to talk
13:17with the government from day one.
13:18From the day one of a certain protest
13:20on 20th June,
13:22we told the police that, you know,
13:25they should be opening a communication channel
13:26with the government.
13:28However, the issue is, you know,
13:31as is with any other protest,
13:32the government simply does not want to
13:35listen to us,
13:36listen to the protesters' demands.
13:39They don't want to engage with anyone.
13:41They don't like dissent at all.
13:43But however, you know,
13:44we consider it a major, major victory
13:46for our protest, for our movement,
13:48that the government itself
13:50reached out to us last evening
13:53and was making attempts to, you know,
13:56get one of its representatives
13:58to talk to us.
13:59They initially started
14:01with the district magistrate,
14:02but we said that, you know,
14:04he has absolutely no powers
14:05over the issues that we are protesting about.
14:08And we were very adamant
14:09about meeting the prime minister.
14:11However, we settled on a senior minister
14:13and that's how we met J.P. Nadda.
14:16But what happened at that meeting?
14:19Are you still sticking to your demands
14:21for the education minister's resignation?
14:23Is that the core demand
14:25that is sustaining the agitation?
14:26Because the government seems to have ruled that out.
14:31All the kind of brutality
14:33that we saw today
14:34from the administration side,
14:36it has only resolved,
14:39it has made our resolve even stronger.
14:42It has made our demand even stronger.
14:45We are asking
14:46that Dharmendra Pradhan
14:47be sacked
14:48from the cabinet immediately.
14:50Along with that,
14:51we have demanded
14:51that Sonam Vangchuk
14:52be released
14:53from the hospital.
14:54And number three,
14:55we have asked
14:56that all families
14:57whose children have died
14:59by suicide
15:01who need aspirants,
15:02all of them
15:03should be getting
15:03one crore compensation each.
15:05So we have put forward
15:07these demands
15:07before J.P. Nadda
15:09in a letter
15:10and orally also.
15:11We were in his office
15:12at his residence
15:14for about four hours
15:15out of which
15:15we met only for 15 minutes.
15:18and we are yet
15:19to hear from them
15:20which is unfortunate,
15:22you know.
15:23So, Hal,
15:24when you met,
15:25did Mr. Nadda
15:26give you any assurances
15:27on these three demands
15:28that you put before him?
15:32He has assured us
15:33that he'll discuss it
15:34with his senior cabinet members.
15:38I'm assuming
15:38that would be Modi and Shah
15:40because that is where
15:41all the power is centralized.
15:44So, but after,
15:46he hasn't committed
15:47anything as of now.
15:49It's 8, 11 p.m.
15:51and we haven't heard
15:52from him at all.
15:53You know, Saurabh,
15:54there will be those though
15:55who will say,
15:56are you blackmailing
15:57or trying to blackmail
15:58the government?
15:59You cannot expect
15:59any government
16:00to decide on
16:01the resignation
16:01of a minister
16:02based on street protests
16:04or what the
16:04Kokhruj Janata Party wants.
16:06How do you respond to that?
16:08Are you blackmailing
16:09this government
16:09at the moment
16:10with these street protests?
16:13But does the government
16:15have powers
16:16to take away
16:16lives of 20 plus
16:17need students
16:18who died at their hands
16:19due to their broken
16:20corrupt education system?
16:22Do they take permission
16:23from all of us
16:24when it comes to issues
16:25of such nature?
16:27They haven't made
16:27a great education system.
16:29The education system
16:30is failing these children
16:32and when they are
16:33out on the streets,
16:33it's their democratic duty
16:35to listen to them,
16:36engage with them
16:37and listen
16:37and implement
16:39whatever they demand
16:40to the extent possible.
16:41But to take
16:43a completely
16:45deaf and dumb
16:46approach
16:47to protesters,
16:48what would
16:49ultimately happen?
16:50People would show up
16:51in large numbers
16:51on the roads
16:52and that is what
16:53has happened today.
16:54So are you telling me
16:55therefore based on
16:56what I am hearing
16:57from you
16:57that your resolve
16:58is strengthened,
16:58the protests continue,
17:00the dharna,
17:00the fasts
17:01in some form
17:02will continue
17:03come tomorrow morning?
17:04Are you going to
17:05now go back
17:06to the streets
17:06and will we see
17:08similar scenes
17:09or have you all
17:09pressed a pause button
17:11till you hear
17:12from the government?
17:15See, our protest
17:17is continuing
17:18at the moment.
17:19We are hearing,
17:20we are waiting
17:21to hear from the government
17:22and we will take
17:23a decision
17:24after we hear
17:25from them
17:26or don't hear
17:27from them.
17:28We are still waiting.
17:28But the movement
17:30will definitely continue
17:32in any case.
17:33The movement
17:33is about
17:34not just
17:35exam paper leaks
17:36education sector reforms
17:37but about
17:38every youth-centric
17:40issue
17:41in the country
17:42today.
17:43So we will be
17:43going nationwide,
17:45we will be
17:45talking to
17:46the young people
17:47of this country,
17:48hearing them out
17:49and bring something,
17:51some great manifesto
17:52for them
17:53in the new future.
17:56Let me ask you
17:57one final question.
17:58You know,
17:58there are your critics
17:59who say that
18:00the CJP
18:00has been formed
18:01as a front
18:02for some political
18:03party or the other.
18:04I have heard
18:05congressmen in particular
18:06off the record
18:06telling me,
18:07you know,
18:07this was part
18:08of the deep state.
18:09Some even say
18:10that the BJP
18:11has propped you up
18:11and that the CJP
18:13is out to undermine
18:14the Congress
18:14and Rahul Gandhi's
18:15efforts to raise
18:16the issue
18:16of need paper leaks.
18:17That there is
18:18something not quite
18:19right about this
18:20movement.
18:20How do you
18:21respond to your
18:22critics?
18:25Rajdeep,
18:26it's quite funny
18:26because none of
18:27these narratives
18:28have stuck to us.
18:31For the past
18:31two months
18:32since we've been
18:32alive,
18:34there have been
18:34narratives about
18:35us getting
18:36foreign funding,
18:37funding from
18:37Soros,
18:38Pakistan,
18:39Bangladesh,
18:40doubts about
18:41our intentions
18:42on what we
18:42want to do.
18:44There were,
18:44you know,
18:44several jokes
18:45and narratives
18:46run in previous
18:47days saying
18:48there are only
18:4950 to 100
18:49people showing
18:50up at the
18:50protest.
18:51But today you
18:52saw entire
18:53Delhi showing
18:54up on the
18:54road and there
18:55were more than
18:56one lakh people
18:57who had joined
18:58us.
18:58So none of
19:00these narratives
19:00have stuck.
19:01they are all
19:02pretty false
19:03and laughable.
19:04The Congress
19:05might have,
19:06if they have,
19:07you know,
19:08internal
19:09reservations about
19:10us,
19:10we are happy to
19:11talk to them
19:11and clear the
19:12air.
19:12But as we
19:13have done
19:13with everyone
19:14else,
19:15including people
19:16in the
19:17opposition,
19:17and you saw
19:18all these
19:19opposition parties
19:20coming and
19:20supporting us
19:21in the many
19:22days since we've
19:23been sitting at
19:24Jantar Mantir.
19:25I'm going to
19:26leave it there,
19:26Sauravdhas.
19:27Good to have you
19:27on the show.
19:28As I said,
19:29you are right
19:30there on the
19:30ground.
19:31Thanks very
19:32much for
19:32joining us.
19:33Stay safe.
19:33Sauravdhas of
19:34the Kokruj
19:35Janata Party.
19:36Okay.
19:37Now, there are
19:37a lot of
19:37celebrities who
19:38have also joined
19:39hands with the
19:40protests taking
19:41place on the
19:42street.
19:43Among them,
19:43actor and
19:44former member
19:45of parliament
19:46Shabana Azmi
19:46joins me now.
19:48She, good to
19:49have you on the
19:49show, Shabana.
19:50You were there
19:51on the weekend
19:52with the CJP
19:53protests.
19:53You've seen
19:54what's happened
19:55today on the
19:55streets.
19:56How do you
19:57now see these
19:57student protests?
19:59this particular
20:00protest?
20:04I was right
20:05there when the
20:05tear-gassing
20:06happened.
20:07And I was
20:08there, I was
20:08witness to the
20:09children being
20:10lathi-charged and
20:11also girls, young
20:12girls being lathi-charged.
20:14And they tried to
20:16put the blame on
20:18the students and
20:19said somebody
20:19threw a shoe and
20:21that's how they
20:22started.
20:23But that's not
20:24what I saw and
20:25that's not what
20:26all the students
20:27kept saying.
20:28They were showing
20:29me their wounds
20:30and they were
20:31saying they were
20:32totally wanting
20:34to do a
20:35completely
20:37non-violent
20:38protest, which
20:39is what was
20:39being told to
20:40them constantly
20:41from the
20:45podium.
20:45and I have
20:47never seen
20:48such controlled
20:50children when
20:51they were so
20:52full of rage
20:54and anger
20:55but completely
20:57determined that
20:58it is going to
20:59be non-violent.
21:02But the good
21:03thing is that
21:03even after that
21:05happened, when I
21:06asked them, are
21:07you scared?
21:08Are you now
21:08going to go
21:09back?
21:09Not one
21:11single one
21:12of them said
21:13that we are
21:14afraid or
21:15we are going
21:17to stop
21:18from now
21:18onwards.
21:19But I really
21:20think when you
21:20try to
21:22stop with
21:23such force
21:24what is a
21:25completely
21:25democratic right
21:26of a citizen
21:27of this country
21:28and particularly
21:29our youth
21:30because we
21:31are used to
21:32so many
21:33politicians
21:34talking about
21:35the youth
21:36is the power
21:36of the country,
21:37the youth
21:37is the power
21:38of the country
21:39and all
21:40they want
21:40is to
21:41initiate
21:42a dialogue.
21:43There were
21:43so many
21:45young people
21:46around the
21:4615-year-old
21:47children
21:48who came
21:49with so
21:49courage
21:49and said
21:50that if we
21:51don't come
21:52today, we
21:52stay in
21:52the love
21:53of the
21:54world.
21:54You
21:55hear them.
21:56What do they
21:57say?
21:57Just listen
21:58to that.
21:59What do they
22:00mean?
22:00No, no, but
22:01Shabana
22:02asked me, while
22:03you say yes,
22:03there were
22:0315, 16,
22:0418-year-olds
22:05protesting there,
22:06there were
22:06also clearly
22:07people who
22:08were perhaps
22:09not directly
22:09involved, or
22:10not even
22:10students who
22:11were involved
22:11with the
22:12protest.
22:12Many believe
22:12political groups
22:13and in
22:14particular
22:14anti-social
22:15elements may
22:16have infiltrated
22:17the protests
22:17and that's
22:18what led to
22:18the confrontation
22:19with the
22:19police.
22:22Well, we
22:24have now
22:24heard that
22:25tomorrow, today
22:26they've said
22:26that we're
22:26going to
22:27clear the
22:27place, but
22:28we have
22:28heard that
22:29tomorrow, if
22:31there is any
22:32gathering at
22:33all, they
22:34are going to
22:35turn it
22:36violent and
22:37then bring
22:38in the
22:39paramilitary
22:40forces and
22:41make it into
22:42a really
22:42violent thing.
22:43Is this
22:44any way of
22:45behaving?
22:45See, in any
22:46protest, what
22:47happens is all
22:48kind of anti-social
22:50elements get
22:51involved and they
22:53try to take
22:53advantage of
22:54that.
22:55We were
22:55prepared for
22:56that.
22:56We knew that
22:57would happen.
22:57But what is
23:01still inexplicable
23:02is when two
23:03of the
23:03representatives
23:04went to
23:05J.P.
23:06Nanda, he
23:07only asked
23:08them to write
23:09what their
23:10grievances were,
23:11spent 10
23:12minutes with
23:13them and then
23:13sent them,
23:14did not have a
23:15dialogue with
23:16them, said
23:16just say what
23:17you want and
23:18then they
23:19wrote the
23:20letter and
23:20went away
23:21from there.
23:22What is
23:23Rajdeep?
23:23Why can't
23:24do this?
23:26But the
23:27government
23:27belief, ma'am,
23:28seems to be
23:29that these
23:29are primarily
23:30anti-government
23:31and even
23:31anti-Prime
23:32Minister Modi
23:33protesters propped
23:34up by a
23:35section of the
23:36opposition, a
23:36section that
23:37has been
23:37traditionally
23:38critical of
23:39the Modi
23:39government for
23:40the last 12
23:40years and
23:41they are
23:41exploiting the
23:42student anger.
23:46Anti-national
23:48terrorists,
23:50Khan market,
23:51tukde-tukde
23:52again.
23:54When
23:54nothing
23:54comes to
23:55come to
23:56all,
23:57everything.
23:58This is
23:58completely
23:59wrong.
24:01In fact,
24:03what I was
24:03so heartened
24:04by when
24:05I asked
24:06Neha and
24:07Manish
24:07and
24:09Amin
24:10to give
24:11up their
24:12fast was
24:13that the
24:13usual
24:14suspects
24:14were not
24:15there,
24:16Rajeev.
24:16There was
24:16just a
24:17sea of
24:18young
24:19people
24:19whom I
24:19have never
24:20seen
24:20in my
24:21life.
24:22So,
24:22this is
24:23absolutely
24:23a
24:23joke.
24:24That
24:24anti-Modi
24:26protesters
24:27and
24:27students
24:28are
24:29use
24:30absolutely
24:31no truth
24:33in that
24:34and to
24:34hide behind
24:35that
24:36allegation
24:36I think
24:38is not
24:39what you
24:40expect from
24:41a democratically
24:42elected government.
24:44If I may
24:44ask then
24:45what brought
24:45a Shabana
24:46Azmi to
24:46the spot?
24:47Is this
24:47your way
24:48of expressing
24:49solidarity
24:49with the
24:50student
24:50protesters
24:51or is
24:52this an
24:52expression
24:53of your
24:53political
24:54affiliations?
24:57I have
24:58never been
24:59involved
25:00with any
25:01political
25:01party.
25:02I have
25:02never been
25:03a member
25:03of any
25:04political
25:05party.
25:05Nor on
25:06record I am
25:07telling you
25:07that I ever
25:08intend to
25:09be a
25:09member of
25:10any political
25:10party because
25:11I have always
25:12believed
25:12that joining
25:14a political
25:15party is
25:16putting the
25:16fetters on
25:17because the
25:17party's truth
25:18becomes your
25:19truth which
25:20is necessarily
25:21a one-sided
25:22truth.
25:23Even when
25:23both Javed
25:24and I were
25:24in parliament
25:25we were
25:26presidential
25:27nominees.
25:28We were
25:28with no
25:29party.
25:31What happened
25:31is on the
25:3215th of
25:33July both
25:35Javed and
25:35I wrote
25:36a letter
25:37to the
25:38prime minister
25:39which I will
25:39share with
25:40you in
25:40which we
25:41said that
25:42we are
25:43appealing to
25:45you as
25:46concerned
25:47citizens and
25:48as former
25:49members of
25:50the Rajasaba
25:50and we
25:51have no
25:51intention of
25:53going to
25:54the social
25:55media.
25:55We are
25:55appealing to
25:56you as
25:57individuals and
25:58all we are
25:59asking is
25:59please initiate
26:00a dialogue
26:01with them.
26:02And we
26:03sent the
26:03letter by
26:04email,
26:04by fax,
26:06and then
26:07dropped it
26:08personally also.
26:08we received
26:09a message
26:10saying that
26:11you will
26:11get a reply
26:12in two
26:12days.
26:13So we
26:13waited two
26:14days,
26:14then we
26:15waited three
26:16days,
26:16then we
26:16waited four
26:17days,
26:18and then on
26:19the fifth
26:19day I
26:20decided that
26:21I would
26:21come and
26:22now I
26:22would go
26:23public.
26:23That was
26:24not our
26:25intention
26:25because our
26:26intention was
26:27not to
26:27draw attention
26:28to ourselves.
26:30We have to
26:31draw attention
26:31to these
26:32young students
26:34who have
26:34come forward
26:35with so
26:35much courage.
26:37I have never
26:37seen something
26:38like that in
26:39my life.
26:40But I have
26:41to ask you
26:42this,
26:42Shaban Asmi,
26:43what is the
26:43solution then?
26:44Surely you
26:45can't expect
26:46any government
26:46to sack a
26:47minister simply
26:48because a
26:49particular group
26:50wants the
26:50minister to be
26:51sacked.
26:52Yes, there
26:52should be
26:53accountability
26:53for paper
26:54leaks,
26:54but is that
26:56the job of
26:56the students
26:57to decide
26:57what kind
26:58of accountability?
27:01No, but
27:01why are you
27:02making that
27:03the peg?
27:04That is
27:04only a
27:05symbolic
27:05thing that
27:06they are
27:06asking for.
27:07What they
27:07are asking
27:08for is
27:09they are
27:10asking for
27:12educational
27:13reforms.
27:13They are
27:14talking about
27:15rehauling
27:16the entire
27:17education
27:17system.
27:18They are
27:18saying,
27:19please,
27:19for so
27:20many years,
27:21so many
27:21years,
27:22we've been
27:22saying,
27:23allocate
27:246% of
27:25the GDP
27:25to education.
27:26Every year
27:27you make
27:27it less
27:28and give
27:28it more
27:29to arms.
27:30Human
27:32development
27:34if you
27:35pay attention
27:36to education,
27:38to public
27:38health and
27:39to women's
27:39empowerment,
27:40only then
27:41can you
27:41really measure
27:42the...
27:44But hold on,
27:45I was at
27:46Jantar Mantar
27:47a couple of
27:48days ago.
27:49Most of the
27:50posters I saw
27:51at their
27:52protest site
27:53was Sacked
27:53Dharma Indra Pradhan.
27:58That was
27:59what the
28:00Cockroach
28:00Janda Party
28:01is asking
28:02for.
28:02But there
28:03were a
28:03whole lot
28:04of people,
28:04like I'm
28:05not with
28:05them,
28:06and there
28:06were many,
28:06many people
28:07who were
28:07not with
28:08them,
28:08but were
28:09making
28:09common
28:09cause
28:10with
28:12these young
28:13people.
28:14So I
28:16think this
28:16is a way
28:17of saying,
28:19all right,
28:20let's put
28:22all of them
28:22under the
28:23same blanket
28:24and accuse
28:25them of
28:26that.
28:26you have
28:27to go
28:27beyond
28:28that
28:28and
28:28educational
28:29reforms
28:30they're
28:30talking
28:31about
28:31Why can't you
28:33talk about that
28:34in this
28:34situation?
28:35You're
28:39making a point,
28:40at least have
28:40a dialogue,
28:41but what do
28:41you see as
28:42the end
28:42game,
28:43therefore,
28:43in this
28:43entire
28:44protest?
28:44Do you
28:44see it
28:44actually
28:45having
28:45any
28:45impact
28:46on
28:46government?
28:47Do you
28:47see it
28:47as a
28:47momentary
28:48anger
28:48of the
28:49youth
28:49that
28:49has
28:49just
28:50expressed
28:50itself
28:50of
28:51frustration
28:51not
28:52just
28:52with
28:52paper
28:53leaks
28:53but with
28:53the
28:53education
28:54system
28:54in
28:54general?
28:57You
28:57know,
28:58I
28:58will
28:58be
28:58very
28:58very
28:59shocked
29:00if
29:00what
29:00you
29:00are
29:01saying
29:01comes
29:02true
29:02because
29:03I
29:03have
29:03never
29:04seen
29:04that
29:05kind
29:05of
29:05jazpa
29:06I
29:06have
29:06never
29:07of
29:07seen
29:07that
29:08we have
29:11done
29:12farmers
29:13and
29:14citizens
29:15protest
29:16and
29:17they
29:18will
29:19do
29:19it
29:19You
29:20are
29:20showing
29:20the world
29:21what
29:21are
29:23you
29:24showing
29:24the
29:24world?
29:25okay
29:26so you
29:26jammed
29:27the
29:27phones
29:27at
29:28the
29:28site
29:29you
29:29pulled
29:30up
29:30the
29:30mic
29:30so that
29:31the
29:32mic
29:32couldn't
29:33work
29:33and people
29:34couldn't
29:34hear
29:34for a
29:35little
29:35while
29:35you
29:35did
29:36that
29:36but
29:36I
29:37mean
29:37what
29:38do
29:38you
29:38think
29:38that
29:38people
29:39will
29:39go
29:39home
29:39and
29:40then
29:40they
29:40will
29:40not
29:41post
29:41they
29:42will
29:42not
29:42it
29:42will
29:42not
29:42be
29:43on
29:43social
29:43media
29:43what
29:44kind
29:44of
29:44thing
29:45is
29:45this
29:45tell
29:45me
29:46so
29:47you

37:18problem
37:19with the

37:23after the
37:24other
37:24and I hope
37:25that we are
37:26not saying
37:26that all of
37:27these people
37:28are anti
37:29one party
37:29or any one
37:30prime minister
37:31these are the
37:32youth of our

37:36engage with
37:38them
37:38I'm saying
37:40this very
37:40clearly
37:40because
37:41unfortunately
37:42what we have
37:43seen
37:43is that
37:44despite
37:45peaceful
37:46protests
37:47across the
37:48country
37:48and we
37:49saw what
37:49happened in
37:50the national
37:51capital
37:51today
37:51but Rajdeep
37:52I want to
37:53say here
37:53on your
37:54channel
37:54that it
37:55wasn't
37:56limited to
37:57what happened
37:58at Jantar
37:58Mantar or
37:59in Delhi
37:59today we
38:00had protests
38:01and for the
38:02past several
38:03weeks there
38:03have been
38:04protests
38:04across the
38:05country
38:06and the
38:07youth of the
38:08country are
38:09taking to
38:09the streets
38:10to get
38:11their voice
38:12across to
38:13the prime
38:14minister
38:14to the
38:15government
38:15to the
38:16education
38:17minister
38:17that they
38:18want
38:19accountability
38:19look when
38:21paper leaks
38:22happen they
38:23affect students
38:24students who
38:25work so hard
38:26their families
38:27put everything
38:28on the line
38:29who work so
38:30hard to sit
38:31for an exam
38:32like NEET
38:33JEE
38:34they sit
38:35for CUT
38:36all these
38:37exams they
38:38have been
38:38either paper
38:39leaks they
38:39have been
38:40cancelled
38:40there have
38:41been glitches
38:41students have
38:42to keep
38:43re-preparing
38:45the argument
38:45the government
38:46will give is
38:46that the
38:47paper leaks
38:47ma'am the
38:48argument the
38:49government keeps
38:50giving the
38:50paper leaks
38:51didn't start
38:51in 2014
38:52they were there
38:53even when the
38:54congress governments
38:54were in power
38:55we didn't see
38:55these kind of
38:56protests there
38:57we didn't see
38:57a demand for
38:58resignations of
38:59ministers then
39:01Rajdeep let me
39:02put it this way
39:03I think what we
39:04are what we need
39:05to do is to
39:06listen to the
39:07youth maybe they
39:08were not giving
39:09exams pre-2014
39:11this set of
39:12people they
39:12are here on
39:13the ground
39:14the government
39:14can only ignore
39:16them and do
39:17whataboutry at
39:18their own peril
39:19that's what I
39:20would like to
39:20say
39:20no madam you
39:21will not intervene
39:22Sanju Varma
39:24stop being rude
39:24no madam I am
39:26asking you not to
39:27intervene that's not
39:27being rude please
39:28put a mic down
39:29please go ahead
39:29no I am not
39:30being rude I am
39:31never rude to
39:32anyone my parents
39:33taught me never to
39:34be rude to anyone
39:35go ahead
39:37so Rajdeep I think
39:38it's it's really
39:40unfortunate that the
39:41government has chosen
39:42not to engage with
39:45the youth with the
39:46student who are
39:47raising a very
39:48legitimate demand a
39:50very legitimate
39:52democratic demand in
39:54a completely
39:56democratic constitutional
39:58peaceful manner
39:59but this was not
40:00peaceful today ma'am ma'am ma'am ma'am ma'am ma'am ma'am this was not peaceful
40:03today and do the youth who are there represent all the youth of the country and were they
40:07all youth
40:08so so Rajdeep please allow me to finish the youth of the country along with people who are
40:17concerned along with the parents of those students many of it 22 people students have
40:24taken their own lives they have committed suicide because of the kinds of problems that
40:28are happening in the examination system they have all been involved in these protests
40:35you could see them last 30 days the protest has been on just at Jantar Mantar even if we
40:42don't talk about other protests just at Jantar Mantar 22 days people have been sitting
40:48on hunger strike please tell me what is the violence that you find in any of this
40:5522 days this morning Rajdeep please let me finish it was not violence till this morning ma'am a quick
41:00answer it was not
41:01violent till this morning the did the government engage with them till this morning Rajdeep
41:07secondly I think all the footage that we have seen is of students marching that is not
41:16violence in a democracy people have a right to protest sure they do they have a right to protest
41:25we should stop calling ourselves a democracy if we don't want if the government should
41:30we should stop calling ourselves a democracy if we don't want if the government should
41:31engage with the people they have every right to protest they have every right to protest peacefully not to
41:35pelt stones that they walk to their parliament and Rajdeep let me say a few things since you
41:41talked about stone pelting in the morning today there were clear visuals of vans coming to Jantar Mantar which were
41:51loaded with
41:52with pebbles with stones with rocks and who could allow that but the but the Delhi police how did they
42:00reach there most
42:01people were not being allowed okay that's a very serious allegation that's a very serious allegation
42:08which is still okay if you just give me one more minute the police has a counterclaim to that
42:13there are both sides to that story about who I you know how did the stones land up there who
42:18pelted stones
42:19there are visuals which show some other protesters pelting stones policemen have been injured let's be very clear at the
42:25same time students have also been injured
42:27the tear gas that lathe charge the tear gas that we saw happening was very clearly something that was being
42:35that the
42:37okay sadhu barma please keep quiet please please ma'am so I think I think we need to place facts
42:43no the audience needs to hear again simply I'm simply placing facts on your show
42:48please put a voice down the the tear gas clearly the students were not uh using tear gas they were
42:55not using lathees and betons
42:57we saw what was happening today there is enough footage to show that rajdeep I just want to say that
43:04there
43:04our education system and more importantly the examination system is completely falling apart
43:12the national testing agency is not even something that has been set up under an act of parliament
43:20it's not even accountable to the parliament of the country this day the NTA holds examinations for 1.25
43:29crore students every year who is it accountable to it's set up as a society so the demand is that
43:36the minister the education minister has to take accountability
43:41okay and I'm sorry in these cases accountability has to start from the top so the students are not making
43:48an illegitimate demand when they're saying that we want the resignation of the education minister
43:54I've heard you patient I've heard you I've heard you is that the only thing that will help
43:58no but yes accountability has to start there and the entire system has to be overhauled
44:05I've heard you very patiently now Madhu Yakshigaut I know you've been hearing them patiently I've got a
44:12congress party yes because the congress party has so far mainly stayed away from the protests
44:16how do you see these protests are they hijacking your own agenda of chatro ki goonj led by Rahul Gandhi
44:24not at all Razdeep congress party as a responsible opposition party the students the either is youth wing
44:32under student wing and congress party under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi protesting across the country
44:37on the chatro ki goonj voice of the students the paper leak in the last 10 years 2014 to now
44:45152
44:47paper leaks been happened you have seen Razdeep I was 10 years member of parliament earlier during
44:53UPA and earlier whichever minister whichever department whether it is railway accident the minister of
45:00railways has resigned it is under UPA government not only Anna Azhar has protested Razdeep you know
45:07very well even fake Babas when they were protesting supported by the RSS and BJP the five cabinet
45:15minister led by late president of India Pranabda and other ministers went and met them congress has
45:22always been power or not in power responsible hearing to the people they said what is the
45:30fundamental principles of democracy discussion and a debate you can't silence people who are
45:37protesting or supporting them it is a brutal it's a fascist the way the police acted on today on the
45:43students you say pro peaceful how when it's violent when the police have deserted to deserted to
45:51latte charts and tear gas cells the students have no other way to protect themselves so here
45:57the congress is raising these issues in the parliament outside the parliament and I can hear the
46:04congress of the BJP spokesperson how can even she call every citizen has a right to express their
46:11opinion shabana has made distinguished actress and former far parliament member and she's calling
46:17by names she may be by raising voice silence you but she cannot silence housing subschooling
46:24housing subschooling protesting across the country so you are supporting it so you are supporting the
46:29students Razdeep one last word yes parents people who have children to understand the pain of the
46:36students have two daughters when they go prepare for a test Razdeep we know the pain by giving lectures
46:43on radio you cannot silence you just can't do that prime minister is not even responding not even
46:51talking to them okay you should answer and talk to them you should resign and you i've seen a debate
47:00how can these students our parents decide it is the responsibility of a central minister who is
47:07heading the hrd and he should take a responsibility and design and what's happening the last 10 years
47:13one lakhs to school i've heard you now madhu i heard you you made your point and bjp is to
47:20nda
47:20government under moji sarkar is making a fast buck by encouraging the leaking of the new paper
47:26i've heard you madhu yakshi gaur you asked for 10 seconds more i've heard you i'll you know sanju
47:32you've been very patient i know you've been pointing your finger now you give me a final comment on this
47:36you've heard lots of crap people one common theme engage don't break your silence the prime minister
47:44doesn't say a word about it he speaks on other issues he can speak on this education minister can
47:49reach out to these students don't you think that will resolve all issues the prime minister is very
47:55popular among the young he can reach out to them resolve their issues rajdeep sardasai you have two
48:03people who are modi naysayers they've spoken at length for 12 minutes in the first two minutes i
48:08was interrupted you said your parents have taught you not to be rude my parents have taught me to call
48:14out the bluff of a boorish bully now let me speak anjali bhardwaj i don't know much about her but
48:21i'm told
48:22i'm told she has a senior position in a ngo called action aid action aid has spoken out against the
48:31abrogation of article 3 not with action aid no no you must be specific you please do not please do
48:37not
48:37engage in characters no no mr yakshi gaur you can't interview no no no no either way even if she's
48:45with
48:45action aid what does that have to do with this i ask you a question yeah please go ahead
48:53forget whether anjali bhardwaj is with action aid or not let's leave that aside anjali bhardwaj has spoken
49:00out against the abrogation of article 370 which was duly that bill was passed in the parliament and we
49:06abrogated article 370 anjali bhardwaj has endorsed vote chori claims by rahul gandhi on her ex timeline
49:14whereas former cji chandra chur said there is no proof of vote chori anjali bhardwaj repeatedly
49:21says that yes evms can be manipulated whereas three former supreme court cji's have called out the
49:28bluff of rahul gandhi on evms every time i ask you a question you're engaging in character assassination
49:33ma'am what does that have to do with the question i asked i asked you a simple question should
49:38the
49:38government break its silence and talk to these students i'm asking you a straight question
49:42you know rajdeep what your problem is anjali bhardwaj was given unlimited time by you
49:50she's because she answered my question you answer my question i give you unlimited time
49:55yes she did not she did not engage in any character assassination i will not allow this anymore on my
50:00program i've had enough enough is enough enough that's right she said the education system is
50:08falling apart we have some new medical colleges now listen quietly we had 323 medical colleges
50:16today we have 837 medical colleges has anjali bhardwaj spoken about that we had 51 000 nbps seats
50:23in 2013 today we have 136 000 nbps seats has miss bhardwaj spoken about it
50:34now let me finish
50:36more the government is willing to engage yes but have you noticed one thing rajdeep very quickly
50:43at 2 33 p.m saurav das he put out a post on xa abhiji dipke has been arrested detained
50:53the police brutality by delhi police is unacceptable after that tweet got viral it got a million views
51:01very quietly at 3 18 p.m he puts out another tweet saying abhiji dipke not arrested nor detained
51:10but he did not delete his old tweet what am i trying to prove i'm trying to prove how propagandists
51:16are making incendiary statements to gain political mileage out of this movement point number one point
51:23number two i can assure you if jp nadal has taken the first step today we will ensure that bona
51:30fide
51:30students their voices are heard and the whole thing is brought to fruition in a very positive
51:36and progressive manner but people who say
51:51this kind of agenda peddling will not be allowed
51:55i've heard you loud i've heard you clear i appreciate all of you joining me i've just about
52:04got 30 seconds for my take the right to protest peacefully is the lifeblood of any democracy young
52:12people who step out to question those in power should not be dismissed with labels or met with
52:17intimidation they deserve to be heard not heckled or worse be tear gassed whether one agrees with their
52:24cause and demands or not the test of a confident democracy is how it treats dissent especially when
52:30it comes from the young every generation has challenged the status quo that is how societies
52:36evolve stand with the right to peaceful protest insist on non-violence from all sides and defend the
52:42democratic space where ideas can compete without fear and yes make accountability a core mantra of
52:50governance give it some flesh flesh and blood not just empty rhetoric and yes learn to listen to
52:57voices other than your own that's the essence of democracy think about it when spain are champions of
53:06the world once again 14 years after their last appearance in a world cup final the spanish have lifted the
53:11trophy after a hard hard fought but well deserved one nil victory over defending champions argentina spain
53:18dominating the match eventually scoring in the 106th minute when substitute ferran torres finally broke
53:25the deadlock in the game it was truly a victory for a worthy champion what does that mean joining me
53:34now is
53:34the one and only bai chung butia one of india's star footballers from yesteryears bai chung good to have you
53:40you almost got your prediction right you had said to me a week ago you fancied spain to win the
53:45cup
53:46although your heart was with england who ended up down lose who ended up losing to argentina in the
53:51semis what made this spanish team so special according to you bai chung
53:58uh yes i think rastip way bit uh i think just one one wrong prediction went wrong i think almost
54:0790 percent
54:08was right i had actually hoped england to go into finals in fact i think england could have given a
54:14better final than argentina against spain uh today morning but yes i think uh if you look at spain
54:20throughout this tournament it's been outstanding they played some of the best teams portugal uh they
54:26beat france and then went on to beat argentina i think it's a complete teamwork i think football
54:30we all know that it's a team sport and it's the team performance that really takes you to win the
54:35tournament and spain has shown that i think a lot of the teams france depended a lot on mbappé and
54:40dembele miss argentina completely rode on messi's uh you know performance to take them to the finals
54:46but i think spain showed that i think it's a complete team effort and if you have a great team
54:51uh that's how you go on to win the finals it was shocking it was completely one-sided but spain
54:58deserved to win this tournament and they were completely the best team in this tournament
55:01you know the one statistic that stood out for me bai chu only 10 shots on target against spain in
55:07the entire tournament over eight matches conceding only one goal this was a team built on defense in
55:13the midfield particularly rodri the player of the tournament would you go along with that
55:17that spain had this magnificent defense and midfield
55:24you know i think people when you concede just one goal and have only 10 shots on target throughout the
55:29tournament they try and speak of goalkeeper and the defense it's not only that it's about the entire
55:33team you know when they they don't lose the ball easily they keep the position they frustrate the
55:38opponent and when you have the ball to keep the position it's all about the movement of the ball
55:44i think every time your defender got a ball stopper in the center there are three four options for him
55:49to pass when it goes to the midfield there are again more options when you go to the attacking
55:53front as well there are more options to pass move those balls when you lose the ball as well they
55:59try and pressurize you on those uh you know uh defending areas of of the opponent which makes it
56:04very very difficult for any team to build up and play against spain and that's what they completely
56:10showed and shocking was a team like argentina with such a great scoring uh you know stats in this
56:17world cup at not a single shot on target entire 120 minutes i think one shot they got off the
56:24target
56:24was above the goalpost in 117th minute that shows how good the spanish team was and and messi himself
56:32we all love him uh do you believe it's the end of the road finally for this great legend of
56:37the sport
56:38at the age of 39 do you really believe there is another world cup in in him have we seen
56:42the last
56:43of messi and the end of the messi era i think it was very sad to see messi cry after
56:51the world cup
56:51and i think he exactly knew this you know this could be his last world cup and uh uh he's
56:57seen it i
56:57think if if you take again messi out of this uh argentina side i think you'd not get so many
57:03uh you
57:03know fans for argentina it was messi fan that went on to support argentina and even the performance from
57:09day one after scoring hat-trick till the final it was messi's magical moment that really carried
57:14argentina way to the finals but when you meet a good team like spain i think it becomes very very
57:19challenging he's not you can't carry all the time so somewhere down the line i think messi's uh you
57:25know yesterday's i think the tears in his eyes also showed that this could be his last i feel sorry
57:31that you know we if if if this is the last world cup uh for him we're gonna miss one
57:36of the greatest
57:37footballer of all time uh maybe this could be his end of international career uh you know
57:42uh career as well but i think he's really given so much to the sport entertained and we are very
57:48fortunate to see a great player like him and just not us but i think he's motivated and encouraged a
57:53lot
57:53of kids to take up the spot because of uh of messi you know wonderful to as always uh bai
58:01chung have
58:01you on the show thanks very much for joining us yes we will all miss the one and only lionel
58:06messi
58:06what we won't miss i can tell you is the behavior of the argentinians after the match where some of
58:11them actually physically targeted uh the spanish one of them has now been shown a red card uh but the
58:17good news is that lionel messi himself was hugging uh lamin yamal the two of them at least were
58:24exchanging pleasantries it is quite a story to have messi and yamal at the same uh match and maybe the
58:32torch has been handed over at the end from messi to yamal the two of them hopefully that image of
58:38them hugging each other at the end of the game is our image of the day that's the sporting spirit
58:43we
58:43want to see not what we saw from the other argentinian players who behaved in an absolutely
58:49disgraceful manner i want to end the show on that note thanks very much for watching that was the news
58:54without the noise good night goodbye jay hind namaskar shubhraji
58:58you
59:00you
59:02you
59:03you
