00:45They're about to sound check in a bit, but no worries.
00:49Yeah, we've just been out here doing this tour, having a good time, stuff like that.
00:53We're going to do a little rig rundown for you guys.
00:55Show you our gear, show you our amps.
00:59And try not to get in the way of my Guitar Tech Anthony here.
01:02Alright, so basically we've got two quad cortexes here.
01:05What we're doing is we kind of have these little patches that we've made here.
01:10We don't use MIDI.
01:12Our Guitar Tech Anthony actually hits these physically for us.
01:15Just because our playback system only has one MIDI channel out.
01:19So we don't have the option to do more than one unit at a time.
01:21So we have a little workaround.
01:23We're in gig mode right here.
01:24We're going to go to the regular mode.
01:25I'll show you guys what we have.
01:25This is basically the Cradle Fill patch that I made.
01:29You can download it actually on quad cortexes cloud.
01:33It's up there for free.
01:34A lot of people ask me like, what are you modeling and stuff like that?
01:38Nothing.
01:39It's actually stock stuff.
01:40So what we do here is we run input one.
01:43And this is going to come out of the XLR from the back of this unit right here.
01:47This is our rig right here for wireless stuff.
01:49This is for guitars and instruments.
01:50It's XLR out that goes into this.
01:53So that means that we have to change the input on this to be mic.
01:56And then we have to adjust it accordingly because the signal level will be a little bit different and wonky
02:00sometimes for that.
02:02Input.
02:02I'm not using the gate here.
02:03We have a send return.
02:04This is so that way we can send two quarter inch cables to the stage and that gives us a
02:10tuner on stage that we use.
02:13After that it's going to hit a kind of like a little gate that's just there in case there's like
02:17a little small tiny noise.
02:19Where you can see the thresholds like really really low and just basically non-existent.
02:21It's just there if in case if like there's a train track system near the venue and it causes.
02:26Like right next door.
02:28Like the one that's above us.
02:30Yeah.
02:31I actually hit a compressor next.
02:34Then I hit this overdrive right here.
02:36Sometimes I'll use a two scoomer on stage live.
02:38Sometimes I'll just do this.
02:39This is I reckon it's kind of like the boss blues driver sort of.
02:43It's supposed to be kind of normal overdrive setting.
02:46We have split.
02:47That's going to split the two different amp tones right here.
02:49So the first one's going to hit is a 5153 pretty much.
02:52And you have this one which is the Friedman.
02:54And this is actually the stock amp on the quad cortex.
02:57I'm not doing a capture or anything like that at all.
02:59Everyone thinks that's what we're doing.
03:01Everyone asks about the guitar tone we play.
03:02It's not that.
03:03We just do the stock stuff.
03:05And same with the cabinet.
03:06It's not an IR.
03:07It's the stock thing that they have in the quad cortex.
03:09I'm here to tell you it's actually crazy good.
03:12And everyone who's wasting their time searching for good tone.
03:15Trying to find like that good capture and that good impulse response.
03:19Just get good and turn knobs man.
03:22That's all you got to do.
03:23I was actually quite surprised because I knew coming into the band and stuff.
03:27The gear was already here waiting for me.
03:30So as it is that's how I started playing.
03:32And it's my first time playing with the quad.
03:35I usually have a Kemper and stuff like that.
03:38But I was blown away by how good it is just with the stock stuff sort of thing.
03:42With my Kemper I had to get like extra profile packs and stuff to get it going properly.
03:47But it's killer.
03:48Like really good.
03:49Much more organic I feel than the Kemper.
03:51Nothing against Kemper.
03:51I love my Kemper.
03:52But it just feels better.
03:54Yeah.
03:55So we got row 3 and row 4 on the output on those two lanes.
03:58That's going to be these two right here.
04:00They both come in right here.
04:02There's this kind of graphic EQ.
04:03This looks like the weirdest EQ curve you've ever seen in your life.
04:05I assure you it works.
04:08Just like I said don't mix with your eyes man.
04:10Mix with your ears.
04:12This is actually the trick to, this is the secret to actually doing like a noise gate
04:16on a quad cortex.
04:17You're going to want to do the side chain one.
04:19So there's an adaptive gate that says S slash C.
04:21It stands for side chain.
04:22What we do is we take this and it's put in after the graphic EQ here.
04:26So it's post the speaker cabinet.
04:29And then that's going to use the input one as the source.
04:32So it's a clean DI that's opening and closing the gate.
04:34But it's going to shut the gate after the amp.
04:37So it's very similar to like using a Boss NS2 and using the 4 cable method.
04:41It's kind of like the digital way to basically mimic that.
04:44And it's really cool when they came out with that side chain gate.
04:47That just changed the game to me.
04:48Right here whenever we do a boost it's going to hit this.
04:51It's a delay that turns on.
04:53And then another 1K bump.
04:56And cut the kind of like the trebly high 8K out a little bit.
05:00Because I don't like that sound whenever you're like shredding in the high strings.
05:06That's basically it actually.
05:07That's pretty much that.
05:09This is basically.
05:10There's also a dummy one where in case the tuner dies.
05:13We have it where it turns the actual loop off.
05:15That way we can still play and not you know.
05:17Or if I forget to hit it.
05:19Which happens often.
05:20I leave myself muted all the time.
05:23Yeah the solo boost is basically this.
05:24We have a couple versions of this.
05:26So this is like I said it's going to turn on this mid-range bump right here.
05:29And we have a delay that turns on.
05:31There is always a room reverb that I use actually.
05:36Just to kind of like make it not so super dry sounding.
05:39And then we actually hit the doubler also.
05:42So it's a stereo spread left and right output for both our guitars.
05:45Setting to our ears and also the front of house.
05:48And then we can choose what we want for like we want one side or the other side.
05:52James at the front of house can also mix it to be like left and right.
05:55Or like double and stuff like that.
05:56You can do all sorts of stuff with it.
05:57So he has a lot more options.
05:58If you're a sound engineer I reckon you're probably a control freak.
06:01So you don't want to take control away from them.
06:04The patches we use are basically this.
06:06It is chunk which is my rhythm tone.
06:08Chunk with no gate which I never use.
06:10But if I need it it's there.
06:12Solo boost this is wet with a delay on it.
06:14There's one with no delay which is solo boost dry.
06:16And there's wet as fuck.
06:19And I think we only use that for one song.
06:22And there's a clean channel for whenever we want to fuck around on stage.
06:25And that's about it because we don't really use anything clean in a song ever I think.
06:29Uh this one is mine.
06:31We have these cool little um power supply units for these.
06:34They use an IEC cable in the back.
06:36And it just powers this right here.
06:37Which gives you a ground on the quad cortex.
06:40It's a super nice thing to have.
06:42I've disabled the volume knob on this.
06:44It doesn't do shit anymore.
06:46But you can turn it off and on by just moving the knob.
06:48And then turning these off and on right here.
06:50I turn it off because it gets moved.
06:52So I don't need it.
06:54This one is Jops right here.
06:57We also have these cool KNK shields that were made for us.
07:00Uh by KNK shields.
07:01They're really cool.
07:02This bit's like magnetic and stuff.
07:03I think everybody's like rocking these now.
07:04You've probably seen these a bunch.
07:07But this guy out of Poland makes them.
07:08They're fucking really cool.
07:09This one is Jops.
07:10It's kind of the same thing pretty much.
07:12Maybe uh his pickups are a little bit hotter than mine.
07:16So I think the input's a little bit different.
07:18Yeah.
07:18Yeah like we tailored it so it's a little bit less sharp.
07:23Again like Donny said like my pickups are a lot hotter.
07:25So it just takes the edge off that.
07:27Yeah I think yours is minus 6.3.
07:30Mine's like a I don't know.
07:32Probably a little hotter than that.
07:33This is actually for our wireless in-ear system.
07:35So you just see our names up here.
07:37Dougal, Joff.
07:39This is the Q mix.
07:40Which um our mixing guy right here is going to use.
07:43To basically kind of like cue up a mix.
07:45And hear what we're listening to.
07:46That way you can hear our mix.
07:47And then make adjustments for us.
07:48This is just a rack mount charger.
07:49I'm a liar.
07:50I don't know where our wireless thing is for our guitars.
07:54Probably somewhere else.
07:55This is just a bunch of cool chargers.

08:20You have to kind of like hit the note.

08:42So this is my techs.

08:46Bench basically.
08:47So.
08:48He has two tuners here.
08:49Using the canvas tuner.
08:50Because it's really cool.
08:51And it has a bunch of embarrassing photos of me.
08:53On it.
08:54And also the Peterson strobe tuner.
08:56Which is what I use on stage.
08:58Jop is rocking the.
09:00Cool pitch black.
09:01Yeah.
09:02Yeah.
09:02Another good one from back to day.
09:03I remember.
09:03Okay.
09:04So this is my Ibanez RGR Prestige model.
09:06I think it's 5130.
09:08I could be wrong about the number.
09:09Everyone knows about how tough that is with Ibanez guitars.
09:13But yeah.
09:13This is just a Prestige model Ibanez guitar that I got.
09:17It's really really cool.
09:18Because the neck is super comfortable on this one.
09:21This is a special wizard neck they make for like this guitar.
09:24And I've fallen in love with it to where like.
09:26I always want this neck on every guitar now.
09:29You know.
09:30Pretty much it comes with the low pro edge in here.
09:33You might notice the tremolo arms a little bit different.
09:35This is actually a red bishop magic trim arm.
09:38So it's a bit different.
09:39But I mean.
09:41It's killer.
09:42That's just Ibanez RGR.
09:43It's being restrung right now.
09:45But this is just a basic six string.
09:47We've got a Fortitude DiMarzio pickup.
09:49Which is the Gojira model.
09:51And I have the PATH 36 anniversary right here.
09:54Most people are confused by that.
09:56Because it's actually a medium output pickup.
09:58But I'm a big fan of high gain amps.
10:00Medium output pickups actually.
10:01I think a lot of people do it the other way around.
10:03I'm exactly the same.
10:04In fact on this.
10:05This V.
10:08The Schechter Juan of the Dead.
10:10The body count signature thing.
10:12Killer finish and stuff.
10:13But it came stock with EMGs.
10:15Nothing against EMGs.
10:17Not my personal preference.
10:18So I'm actually going to swap these out.
10:19For exactly the same pickups that Donnie's using.
10:21I don't hate these though.
10:22They actually sound.
10:23They're fine.
10:24They're absolutely fine.
10:25But it's.
10:26It's just personal preference.
10:28Yeah.
10:28They're a little bit too hot for me.
10:30And.
10:30Like Donnie said.
10:31High output.
10:32Amp.
10:32Medium output pickups.
10:34Sounds great.
10:35So I'm going to swap those out at some point.
10:37Because I'm going in the studio.
10:39Right off the back of this tour.
10:40And I'd like to track with those.
10:41So.
10:42Yeah.
10:42This is my Schechter Diamond series.
10:44Like the body count signature model.
10:47The Juan of the Dead.
10:48I think.
10:49Completely stock.
10:49Lock and tuners.
10:52Yeah.
10:53Not much to really say about it.
10:54It just does exactly what it says.
10:55It's a big shiny pointy guitar.
10:58You know.
10:58Just twice it.
11:00But a killer finish.
11:01I really like the finish.
11:01It surprised me.
11:02When it turned up.
11:03That satin finish.
11:04It's almost under the stage light.
11:06It almost looks like some kind of marble stone.
11:07Or something like that.
11:08Which is cool.
11:09On the back of this guitar.
11:10I've done a bunch of modifications myself.
11:12So basically.
11:13This right used to come stock with.
11:16Active pickups in it.
11:17And it had this voice switch in it.
11:18And this is now just a coil split.
11:20I still have a volume and tone knob at work.
11:23But I changed the cap in that.
11:24To be an orange drop cap.
11:25On the back here.
11:27I've actually also have.
11:28A Futone brass claw.
11:30Brass screws.
11:30And brass block as well.
11:32And I'm going to change the springs out.
11:33Because they're getting a little bit worn.
11:35But they have the Futone like.
11:36Noiseless ones that I like a lot.
11:38And I always do this thing.
11:39Where actually.
11:39You see this little white gunk on here.
11:41I put a lot of like.
11:43It's actually for a trailer hitch.
11:45Is what it's for.
11:46And it adds like some lubrication.
11:48So that way like.
11:48The knife edge on it.
11:50It doesn't wear out so fast.
11:51I use the trim so often.
11:52That I tend to.
11:53They tend to wear it on me.
11:54It doesn't stay in tune.
11:55After that.
11:56So.
11:57If anyone has a problem with their trim.
11:58Staying in tune.
11:59Probably the knife edge is worn a little bit.
12:01You can sharpen them up.
12:02I would recommend using chapstick.
12:04Right there.
12:04Or even just something that you could find.
12:07Like a Lowe's or a Home Depot.
12:08That's what I used to use.
12:09Lip balm.
12:10Yeah lip balm works really well.
12:11Lip balm on it.
12:12Basically the other side.
12:12Mine are coated.
12:13And a lighter gauge.
12:15Because Donny uses like.
12:17Superman strings.
12:18Like he's like.
12:19He's got Hulk fingers.
12:20For fuck's sake.
12:21It's ridiculous.
12:22But I use 9.5 to 46.
12:24Keep it a little bit lighter in the top.
12:26Sort of thing.
12:26Lots of bends.
12:27Vibrato.
12:28Kind of like a less wimpy Malmsteen.
12:30Kind of situation.
12:32But.
12:32Yeah.
12:33String Joy.
12:33I've recently made the change to String Joy.
12:35From Elixir strings.
12:37And they're killer.
12:38They feel great.
12:39And they sound amazing.
12:41Sold.
12:41You can't even tell that they're coated actually.
12:43Like I felt it.
12:43I was like.
12:44What in the world do you like?
12:45That's the thing.
12:45But as soon as Anthony.
12:47Put them on my V.
12:49For the rehearsals for this tour.
12:51I was just like.
12:51Bam.
12:52It feels like a real string.
12:54Like the Elixirs.
12:55They tend to be a bit too slick.
12:56The coating is a bit too obvious.
12:59Yeah.
12:59Much much better.
13:01I'm pretty much rocking the same thing.
13:02String Joy.
13:03Mine are not coated.
13:04But I'm playing a 12.
13:05With a 54.
13:06Which is unusual.
13:06Because it's.
13:07Heavier on the treble side.
13:09And lighter on the.
13:10On the low string side.
13:11But this actually is.
13:1220 pounds of tension.
13:13Exactly on every single string actually.
13:15So I built this one.
13:16With that in mind.
13:17It's just the same tension.
13:18Across the board.
13:20I find that.
13:21Feels nice for me.
13:22I think the way that it like.
13:23Reacts the pickup is nicer.
13:24It's a little more even sounding.
13:26And my tremolo system.
13:27Sent to like it a lot also.
13:29But.
13:29Yeah.
13:30And I.
13:30Yeah.
13:3112s are kind of heavy.
13:32Strings.
13:33But.
13:33I don't know.
13:33I just.
13:34I don't like when the string.
13:35Moves when I hit it.
13:36But it does suck the bends.
13:38You have to like really just.
13:39You have to fight it.
13:40But.
13:41It's not too bad though.
13:43It's not like.
13:45My sort of girly string choice though.
13:46I do jack my action up a tad.
13:49Just so you've got that little bit of extra fight.
13:51Sort of thing.
13:52If it's too easy.

14:12The SLS evil twin.
