00:00Poland's Conservative President Karol Nawrotzki on Friday vetoed a bill to legalize civil partnerships.
00:07The legislation had been proposed by Prime Minister Donald Tusk's centrist government
00:11ahead of last year's parliamentary elections in Poland.
00:15In a statement on social media platform X, Nawrotzki said,
00:19quote, nothing that is a quasi marriage can count on my support.
00:23He added that in his capacity as the guardian of the constitution,
00:26he cannot accept a solution that would lead to the loss of the special status of marriage,
00:31which is defined as a union between only man and woman.
00:35The bill, first submitted to parliament last December, aimed to establish a status of the closest person
00:41for unmarried partners, including same-sex couples.
00:44The unions would grant some of the rights currently reserved for married couples under Polish law,
00:49such as joint property rights, access to each other's medical information, and burial rights.
00:55To ease conservative opposition, leaders of the ruling coalition have stressed that
01:00closest person unions do not exclusively have to be between romantic partners,
01:04but could also be neighbors or family members.
01:07Tusk criticized President Nawrotzki following his veto, noting that it's, quote,
01:12an expression of contempt towards people, the right to happiness and a normal life.
01:16That's a very polite.
