00:00Welcome back to From the South.
00:01The US government has announced it will impose 25% tariffs on a list of goods imported from Brazil.
00:08The move came eight months after the Trump administration cancelled its previous 40% tariff on Brazilian goods.
00:14In Brazil, our correspondent Brian Mir has more.
00:19On July 15th, the US government announced it will impose a 25% tariff on imports for a series of
00:26goods from Brazil.
00:26Since when the Trump administration levied high tariffs on Brazil in 2025, it ended up hurting US consumers.
00:33Many view the move as political jockeying to support the candidacy of Senator Flavio Bolsonaro for the presidency this year.
00:41Brazil has a trade deficit with the United States.
00:45Our relationship is complementary for both sides in terms of capital and importance.
00:53Consider this. Of the 13 largest products that will be affected by the tariffs,
00:58Brazil is the main supplier to the US for 11 of them.
01:02This means that this will also affect US financial interests.
01:06On May 26th, Flavio Bolsonaro flew to Washington and met with President Trump.
01:11On June 2nd, President Trump shared photos of himself with Flavio and Eduardo Bolsonaro on social media,
01:18then announced plans for new tariffs on Brazil.
01:21Since Trump demanded freedom for Jair Bolsonaro as a condition for removing his failed 2025 tariffs,
01:28most of the Brazilian public immediately blamed the Bolsonaros.
01:32One more attack against Brazil, promoted by the Trump administration and organized by Flavio and Eduardo Bolsonaro.
01:43The United States has confirmed a 25% tariff on Brazilian products.
01:52Flavio and Eduardo Bolsonaro are working against the interests of Brazil as veritable bootlickers of Donald Trump.
02:00If the Trump administration believes that supporters of President Lula will switch sides in this year's elections
02:06in hope that a Bolsonaro victory will mean an end to tariffs,
02:09so far there isn't much indication that they will make much of a difference.
02:16Regarding the US's intentions, I don't have a shadow of a doubt that this is an attempt to interfere in
02:22Brazil's elections,
02:22but I think it will backfire. As the saying goes, it shot itself in the foot.
02:32Polls show that Brazilian voters reject interference by foreign powers in internal affairs.
02:41President Lula will end up benefiting from this, and Flavio Bolsonaro, by lobbying against national interests, has damaged his own
02:48candidacy.
02:49Brazil's presidential elections will take place on October 4th.
