00:00Has Andy Burnham failed to build any social housing in his nine years as mayor of Greater Manchester?
00:06Well, that's what Reform's Greater Manchester mayoral candidate is claiming.
00:11I think there are over 20,000 households on the Manchester Register, the housing register in Manchester,
00:17and they haven't built social housing for decades.
00:21Obviously, he's been mayor of Greater Manchester for 10 years.
00:25One might have thought he'd have made a bit more progress with that.
00:28So we checked the evidence.
00:30The UK is currently facing a housing crisis with more than 1.3 million households in England
00:36on the waiting list for a social home.
00:39And because Burnham is currently the only successor to Keir Starmer,
00:44it's important to look into his track record around housing.
00:48But Reform's claim doesn't stack up.
00:50We asked Greater Manchester for the figures.
00:53From 2017 to 2025, Greater Manchester built 2,368 homes for social rent.
01:01And if you include affordable housing as well, a total of over 18,000 homes were completed during those years.
01:09We reached out to Reform asking where they got their statistics from.
01:15They responded by saying that Cy-Anne had misspoken, but she corrected the record later on in the podcast.
01:21They also went on to say that what she meant was that Manchester City Council hadn't prioritised social housing.
01:27They also went on to say that they were
