It's starting to look less and less likely by the day that Washington upgrades the receiver room. Do they even need to?

00:00Brandon Iyuk's not right.
00:02Another one?
00:03I don't even know.
00:04Somebody give me a look-see.
00:06See if Iyuk's posted another video.
00:09But we talked about this a little earlier,
00:12that there was a period of time where it seemed expected
00:15that Iyuk would land in Washington.
00:18Yeah.
00:19Now we're at a period of time where it seems unexpected.
00:22Could it still happen?
00:23Sure.
00:23There's different rules for people that can catch touchdowns.
00:25But I don't think it's happening.
00:28Okay.
00:30So Adam Schefter went on his podcast yesterday
00:34and talked significantly about what Washington could
00:37or could not do at the receiver position.
00:41Jeffrey, tell me when you're ready for Schefter.
00:43This is Adam Schefter via his podcast
00:45talking about Washington's receiver.
00:47By the way, we talked about Washington and Brandon Iyuk.
00:51And most people thought Iyuk would go there.
00:53And it may turn out to be that Brandon Iyuk's
00:58social media posts created an opening for Stefan Diggs,
01:03who played at Maryland, to go back to that area.
01:08It's interesting.
01:09Take the spot that Brandon Iyuk might have had
01:12and now fill in.
01:14Like, again, the production was there last year
01:16coming off an ACL injury.
01:18You'd have to think the production will be there this year.
01:21And I think there are certain fits that would make sense for Stefan Diggs
01:25with veteran quarterbacks like in Kansas City.
01:27That would be logical.
01:30But I think he'll find work.
01:32And I think somebody will bring him in.
01:33And it wouldn't surprise me if he has a new team
01:36relatively early in camp.
01:42At this point, with Diggs,
01:49Dan Quinn said at minicamp,
01:55we're going to play a lot of the twos and threes
01:57because we want to see what our depth is like.
02:00I had significant questions about the depth at corner.
02:03Maybe they did too.
02:04Because about 10 days later,
02:05they signed a veteran corner in Rasul Douglas.
02:07All right.
02:09The depth receivers played a lot.
02:11And you know who Quinn talked about at length unprompted?
02:16Deami and Van Jefferson.
02:18The guys that were brought in to give more depth
02:21to the receiver room.
02:25Steph Diggs last year played about 55% of the snaps for New England.
02:29So he wasn't on the field a ton.
02:32Now, some of that is how often is even like the top receiver
02:36on a team on the field?
02:3975% of the time?
02:41Mm-hmm.
02:41Like, receiver's not in a position where you're going to play 100% of the snaps.
02:44But his workload was decreased coming off the knee injury.
02:47Right?
02:48He was effective.
02:49Went for over 1,000 yards.
02:51Yeah.
02:53On an offense that didn't have a lot.
02:56The second leading receiver in New England was Hunter Henry, the tight end.
02:59They ran the ball okay.
03:00Drake May was good.
03:03Obviously, New England wanted to upgrade.
03:06I feel like the A.J. Brown thing was a done deal since the Super Bowl loss.
03:11Mm-hmm.
03:12But Diggs, unquestionably, played well last year.
03:17Yeah.
03:18Is there stuff?
03:19If you Google them, are you going to find some stuff?
03:21Sure.
03:22Yeah.
03:22But there's lots of players with stuff.
03:24Mm-hmm.
03:25And there's nothing.
03:26The league came out and said there's no concern about any sort of suspension,
03:30whatever the official wording of that was.
03:33And that right there may make people go after me more.
03:37So, seems like no one really has yet, but I just wonder, if the question is,
03:46should they sign Steph Diggs, I say yes.
03:48Mm-hmm.
03:50What I think is a more fitting question at this point, do you think they're going to do anything?
03:57Because just the timeline of we want to see what our depth looks like in minicamp,
04:03that was a month ago now.
04:06They saw what their depth looked like, and then we saw them make a subsequent roster move
04:10because of that, by adding a veteran.
04:14Like, if they were going to add a veteran-wide receiver, maybe it is still Iyuk,
04:20and he's still under contract, so they can't.
04:21And they're waiting to see how that transpires.
04:24Maybe they were doing that, and then that got to a point where they go,
04:26we can't do that.
04:28And the rivalry that they signed did not break the bank.
04:34So, I just, my question for the phones, 800-636-1067, 800-636-1067, are you convinced they're going
04:44to add a veteran-wide receiver, or is this just a whole bunch of speculative talk in the middle
04:49of the summer when there's nothing else to talk about?
04:52Now, I would tell you this, it's speculative talk until Schefter says something.
04:57Now, it may be a discussion.
04:59Now, the discussion doesn't, that don't mean that it's going to happen,
05:02but they're thinking about something.
05:06I agree with that.
05:08Phone lines are open.
05:10Do you think they're going to add someone?
05:12Because you're at a point where the Iyuk stuff has gone pretty crazy,
05:16and I don't think you're going to bring him in.
05:18And then, in turn, Diggs is here.
05:22Like, he's working out in Prince George's County.
05:25Like, he's working out with the same coach he's worked out with forever
05:28that I've talked to a bunch.
05:31Coach, he's good, like, healthy, ready to rock.
05:34You know what I mean?
05:36Mm-hmm.
05:38If you're going to do it, is there a point where you just should?
05:45Or do you think this thing gets into training camp,
05:51and they've gotten to this point, so whatever, July 15th,
05:56pretty confident with the group they put together?
05:58Yeah.
06:00They haven't played anybody yet, though.
06:02They're covering it now.
06:03A week, two weeks into camp, okay, we've got to make a call.
06:06But you look at it, they don't report until the 28th.
06:12Yeah.
06:13You see Steph working out all the time.
06:16Are you forced to rush him in right now?
06:19If you decide you want to go with him,
06:21have you had a conversation with him and say,
06:23well, we're going to try and do it then at this point, not right now?
06:27And if he's cool with that, that's cool.
06:32I am 100% certain that they've had a conversation with Diggs in this process.
06:40Now, what does that mean?
06:42I don't know.
06:43How do you think there was a period of time where you and I were fairly confident
06:48Ayuk would land here?
06:49Mm-hmm.
06:50I think now neither of us expect it.
06:52I think it's very slim now.
06:53Yeah.
06:54But it's not completely gone.
06:56Agreed.
06:57How confident are you that Diggs lands here?
07:01I don't know.
07:02I think this one here,
07:03if I had played like him last year and had the year I had,
07:07what you said, 55%,
07:09and still had over 1,000 yards receiving,
07:12and how many touchdowns,
07:13I would want to get taken care of.
07:18And I think it would come down to that.
07:2085 catches, 1,013 yards, 4 touchdowns.
07:2355% of the snaps.
07:25Yeah.
07:25I'm curious.
07:28I wonder if I can pull those snaps.
07:32I'm curious what else his market is.
07:35You know what I mean?
07:37Who Diggs?
07:38Yeah.
07:39I guarantee he has a great market.
07:41If he had a great market, he'd be signed already.
07:44No, not necessarily.
07:45Because sometimes we watch veteran guys at a certain status
07:49don't sign until later.
07:50They don't want to go to all that stuff in the offseason.
07:52Sure.
07:55White Bryant, Google that for us.
07:56What are the other teams even reportedly interested on Diggs?
08:00Because we've heard Baltimore, right?
08:02Mm-hmm.
08:03It's been there.
08:05But I don't know.
08:07So I'm pulling up snap counts for the Pats offense.
08:11Diggs got 54.66% of the snaps.
08:15Two receivers got more snaps than him.
08:18Kayshawn Booty and Mack Hollins.
08:19And he outproduced them, I think, combined.
08:22So that tells you something.
08:24Yeah.
08:24My question for the phones, though.
08:27Because if I say, should they sign Diggs,
08:30everybody's going to call in and say yes.
08:32Like, there's not much of a, to me,
08:34there's not much of a mystery there.
08:35My question is, do you think they're actually going to sign somebody?
08:38Because they haven't done it yet.
08:39And how upset will you be if they don't?
08:42The question, though, Jay,
08:43are they obligated to have to sign someone right now?
08:46No.
08:46But you run the risk of not having the people you want to sign available.
08:51Colin is in wrestling.
08:52Colin, you think they're going to bring somebody in?
08:55I personally don't think we're going to bring someone in.
08:58And, you know, I think it might be tough for some fans to hear
09:01because we've kind of had that thing go on with the roster before
09:03where we like the guys in the building.
09:05But it goes back to what you guys were talking about earlier,
09:08where, you know, these other guys,
09:10if they can elevate and really, you know,
09:13get unexpected production like Chig
09:15and like Rashad White out of the backfield,
09:17that can really be all you need.
09:18So that's what I got to say.
09:19Thank you, guys.
09:20Appreciate it, man.
09:21Thanks for the call.
09:21Good call.
09:22I am not, as we get further and further into this,
09:27and you're right,
09:29Schefter talking about it is a little different,
09:31and Fowler talked about it too.
09:33I just think there was a period of time
09:37where they thought they were going to add IU.
09:39And then that time has ended.
09:43And now they're like, what do we do?
09:45Do we have to roll with the guys we have?
09:47Do we add somebody?
09:48And I'm just not entirely convinced
09:51they feel the need.
09:53Do you think Steph would like to not
09:55have to deal with training camp
09:57and like ride it out till mid-August?
10:00Yeah.
10:01Veteran guy.
10:02But the thing of it is this.
10:05No, they don't feel like they need to sign someone right now.
10:08They ain't playing no games yet.
10:10Sure.
10:11As they start playing some preseason games,
10:12getting closer,
10:13if things don't seem to be moving in the right direction,
10:16that level one to sign changes.
10:21I think, you know,
10:24the first set of,
10:27they don't even have a joint practice till August 12th.
10:30It's kind of crazy to think a month from now.
10:33Less than a month.
10:36I just think,
10:37I think fans need to be prepared
10:39that there isn't a wide receiver coming to town.
10:43Because it almost has become this foregone conclusion.
10:47Maybe it'll still happen.
10:48But like,
10:49the actions
10:50of them adding a veteran
10:52earlier this month
10:53because they saw they needed to,
10:56like,
10:56we saw that.
10:57It happened.
10:58It occurred.
10:58They haven't done that at the receiver position.
11:01Yeah.
11:02Is there,
11:04is there a
11:05hurry to this?
11:06No.
11:07They don't play a game for two months.
11:08Three months.
11:09Two months.
11:10Two months.
11:10Two months.
11:10Not a math guy.
11:12And they do it in three months.
11:13They're going to have an issue.
11:14Let's hope they show up before three months.
11:16Jermaine is in Bowie.
11:17Jermaine,
11:18what do you think about this receiver thing?
11:20Yeah,
11:20so,
11:21personally,
11:21I think they should.
11:22Of course,
11:23like,
11:23like a lot of people will.
11:25Do I think they will?
11:26I think it's more,
11:28I lean more towards them not bringing them in.
11:30I think they're just happy with the receiver room.
11:32I think they're satisfied with what they got.
11:35If it was me,
11:35though,
11:36I would bring them in on an incentivized contract.
11:39Which means,
11:40you know,
11:40if you reach a certain mark,
11:42this is,
11:42you know,
11:42this is what you get.
11:43So,
11:44I think,
11:44I think money might play a part in,
11:46you know,
11:46I don't know why they're not going out there.
11:48They have aggressive stuff.
11:49Maybe off the field stuff or,
11:51you know,
11:52cap safe.
11:53I don't know.
11:54But there's some reason why they're not going out there.
11:57Appreciate you,
11:58Jermaine.
11:59You think there's something else there
12:00that they're out on digs?
12:02No.
12:03I don't.
12:06I'll tell you what.
12:06With my experience,
12:07Jay,
12:10we've said that they could have had a conversation with him.
12:13And they could have.
12:14And digs have been around long enough to not say anything.
12:19Just because we don't know,
12:21don't mean that they are not having conversations.
12:23Sure.
12:23And I know this for facts.
12:26When people get to a certain standard,
12:29they know,
12:29okay,
12:30we're going to check these young guys out,
12:31man.
12:31We still bring you in.
12:33But we don't want anything to happen.
12:34I'm not saying they had this conversation directly,
12:36but those type of conversations happen.
12:38You know what I mean?
12:39Yeah.
12:40And I think we,
12:42as fans,
12:43always want something to happen because we think it.
12:45So we can go tell our next friends how much we know.
12:49We don't know.
12:49And I'm happy we don't know at this point.
12:53I think this was Fowler,
12:55right?
12:55Said at least five teams are interested in digs.
12:57And that information is probably coming from the agent.
13:00That's fine.
13:00Trying to make sure there's a market.
13:02If you got more than one,
13:03that's all you need.
13:04He named three.
13:05And there is one team that was named that to me would make absolute sense.
13:11Who?
13:13Who's a coach that brings in veterans.
13:15Maybe if there's baggage or not.
13:17Andy.
13:18Andy.
13:19Fowler reported at least five teams,
13:21who's interested in Steph digs,
13:23including Ravens chiefs commanders.
13:25If I'm a receiver and Pat is coming back and he's right,
13:30wouldn't you want to play with Pat?
13:32And listen to their receiving room.
13:36I'm looking at the chiefs depth chart from ESPN.com.
13:40And it's clearly been updated.
13:41Cause they have Kenneth Walker on here as the running back.
13:45Rasheed rice.
13:48Who's.
13:49I'm honestly,
13:50I don't think he's going to be playing.
13:52What do we know is rice suspended?
13:53I believe he was in jail for a little while.
13:56What is the Rasheed rice situation?
13:58I think that's still under review.
14:00And then Xavier worthy speed kid out of Texas that.
14:05I don't know how confident you are in a year or two in.
14:09Go further down this chiefs.
14:11The chiefs depth chart at the receiver position.
14:15Tyquan Thornton.
14:17Can I,
14:18he played a right though.
14:20Can I interest you in Nico Remigio?
14:22Never heard of him.
14:24Jimmy holiday.
14:27Maybe it's Billy's grandson.
14:29I don't know.
14:32I'm looking at this.
14:36Mate.
14:37The chiefs make a lot of sense in the Steph digs world to me.
14:42And that's been reported by Fowler.
14:44That's not me coming up with it.
14:45Let's go to Chris in Annapolis.
14:47Chris.
14:48What's up,
14:48dude.
14:48What do you think actually happens in this receiver position?
14:52I mean,
14:53I think I really messed himself up.
14:55I think that was the plan all along,
14:57but the only thing I really don't understand with Peters,
14:59and I think you've done a pretty good job is that why,
15:02why Daniel's under this rookie contract,
15:04we shouldn't be leaving any money on the table.
15:07So I don't understand why we wouldn't go out and get a wide receiver.
15:12If we have the cap space.
15:13And if there's wide receivers available.
15:18Um,
15:19it's a fair point that people have been asking.
15:23They,
15:23they,
15:23they,
15:24they,
15:24they've been aggressive in their cash spending,
15:27but not as it relates to the cap.
15:30And I think particularly in the NFC,
15:33what makes that difficult is.
15:37Tell me if you think I'm wrong on this B,
15:39but three of the best teams in football over the last decade,
15:46Rams,
15:47Niners,
15:48Eagles,
15:51certainly the Rams and the Eagles are aggressive.
15:54They push the gas.
15:56They do.
15:57Now it's tough to look at this off season and say they weren't aggressive,
16:01but they didn't go top of market for some of these dudes.
16:05I'm also cool with it.
16:06I think Alex Pierce was not,
16:08it was not smart.
16:09I think Alex Pierce and that center,
16:12that's too much when you're still trying to build a team.
16:14I think Leonard bomb would have made more sense to Pierce,
16:16but I'm with you.
16:17It was asinine money.
16:18I think it's too much for that center position.
16:20If you are also trying to sign tonsil and stuff like that.
16:25Yeah.
16:25It's interesting because,
16:26and just because you got salary cap,
16:28don't mean that you just spend it on anybody.
16:32I'm just being real about that.
16:34I agree with that,
16:35but they have,
16:38they have not been aggressive with Jaden on the rookie deal,
16:41but what's almost more important when extension time comes,
16:48like if you get the extension done early and correct,
16:53that parlays out the advantages of the rookie deal because you don't tear it up.
16:58It's an extension.
16:59It starts after.
17:00So you still have an opportunity.
17:02I listen,
17:03man,
17:04I think there were,
17:06we're three years into the DQ AP thing.
17:09One thing I am done with is like,
17:11oh,
17:11the roster was so bare from Ron.
17:13It was,
17:14but you're now in year three,
17:15dude.
17:15You've been,
17:15you've been running this operation for three years.
17:17This is your operation now because otherwise it's like what Ron used to say.
17:22Oh,
17:22it takes four years.
17:23Not for some of these other teams.
17:26So it's a big year for these dudes specific to the,
17:31why don't they spend more money?
17:32They spend a lot of money.
17:34They put a lot of cash on the table in free agency that happened.
17:38So,
17:39maybe they haven't been aggressive enough at the receiver position.
17:44That stuff happens via trade.
17:45They tried to trade for Debo last year.
17:47It didn't,
17:48it was relatively fruitful for a fifth round pick.
17:52Yeah.
17:53But Jayden got hurt.
17:55I don't,
17:55it's a complicated matter.
17:57But like the thing of it,
17:58bro,
17:59those other teams that you say it don't take for you,
18:03they have a nucleus.
18:04This team had no nucleus.
18:06Now they seem to have one.
18:07And you would think that things can happen a little quicker,
18:11but every team we name,
18:12every team,
18:13we compare this team to,
18:15they had everything in place already.
18:17You look at the Eagles.
18:19For some reason,
18:20the Eagles defense has been dominant and they still were able to pay their
18:24quarterback.
18:25Most teams can't do it like that.
18:26You know,
18:27they figure it out.
18:28Yeah.
18:29They figure it out.
18:30I don't know exactly how it happened.
18:31Eventually.
18:32I think all that stuff come to their head,
18:35but they had a nucleus.
18:36The Chiefs have a nucleus.
18:38The Ravens had a nucleus.
18:40Washington was bone dry at one point.
18:44And they're trying to come back.
18:46So they can't do everything in one off season.
18:50And I think that's our expectation.
18:52And we have them now though.
18:54No,
18:54no,
18:55but I know there's three of them,
18:56but you had a,
18:58you had a slew of injuries that caused a lot of the problems last year.
19:02Yeah.
19:02I think the,
19:04the,
19:05the hardest part to reconcile is where they poorly constructed last year,
19:09or was it just a ton of injuries that impacted everything?
19:11And I think glass half full injuries,
19:14glass half empty,
19:15all the other factors.
19:17The first year that they rolled in and everything happened.
19:20Yeah.
19:20I think that threw everything out of whack.
19:22That wasn't expected at that moment.
19:24And it happened.
19:24And it made everybody think that they were farther along than what they were.
19:28They were not.
