00:41:10The veteran's stadium, the host, it was the last of 15 all-star games for Ozzie Smith.
00:41:16Ricky Petalico was the only Philly representing the home side in what was not a particularly good vintage of Philly's
00:41:23baseball.
00:41:23They finished last in the MLEs that year, Yonder.
00:41:26Boy, things have changed, and it's a very good version of the Philly's that play host this year.
00:41:31It sure has changed a ton, huh?
00:41:33Looking at this Philly's team right now, expecting not only to get to the postseason, but get to the World
00:41:38Series.
00:41:39And look, to be honest with you, this is a team this year that I feel like they can beat
00:41:45that Power Horse team that's out in L.A., right?
00:41:47I just feel like they're starting rotation in that offense right now, and led by Don Mattingly, yeah, I think
00:41:52they've got some say when it comes to October.
00:41:55But Tread deadline is going to be a pretty interesting time around here and elsewhere in Major League Baseball.
00:42:00John Schneider taking the reins, pending the lineup card for the American League team.
00:42:04First ever trip to the All-Star game as a skipper in his fifth season managing the Toronto Blue Jays.
00:42:10And John told us before the game tonight that his Jays are a week and a half's worth of good
00:42:16starting pitching away from getting their mojo back in the AL East.
00:42:20I think you said it, man, a week and a half of starting pitching.
00:42:23I talked to him yesterday during the Home Run Derby, and I asked him, what do you think needs to
00:42:27happen?
00:42:27Good pitching and then timely hitting.
00:42:29We saw what happened in 2025 in the ALCS game seven.
00:42:33George Springer with the huge home run right there.
00:42:35But that's who they are, right?
00:42:37They're a momentum team.
00:42:38That's their identity.
00:42:39Momentum is what it's all about.
00:42:41A country behind you.
00:42:42And then after that, good pitching will lead to something like that, getting to the World Series.
00:42:46Last year, seven-game win to get them to the Fall Classic.
00:42:50It was a seven-game loss to the Dodgers that ended up finishing the runner-up spot.
00:42:56Last year in the first half, boy, the Blue Jays were a real force.
00:43:00And this year, a mirror image of their record.
00:43:04Their last in the AL East, which I still have a hard time getting my head around because Baltimore's been
00:43:09wobbly.
00:43:10Boston was wobbly until the last three weeks or so.
00:43:13Maybe better things are in store for John Schneider and the Jays.
00:43:17The whole American League has been pretty much a disaster, right?
00:43:21They're only two and a half games out.
00:43:22How about this starting or opening pitch ceremony?
00:43:25This is pretty good stuff.
00:43:26Hall of Famer Steve Carlton, Mike Schmidt,
00:43:29throwing out the ceremonial first pitches in Philadelphia tonight.
00:43:35Nothing like it.
00:43:37They want to go.
00:43:39Michael Jack, underhanded.
00:43:40Lefty, overhanded.
00:43:43Here we go.
00:43:45Fabulous.
00:43:48Scott Rowland and Cole Hamels.
00:43:51Maybe Cooperstown calling for Cole.
00:43:53So three of the four are in Cooperstown.
00:43:56He's got a chance.
00:43:57I feel like Cole's kind of trending in that direction.
00:44:00Boy, Cole still looks like he can pitch, huh?
00:44:04They don't build him like Mike Schmidt and Steve Carlton anymore.
00:44:07That is for sure.
00:44:0918 seasons for Schmitty.
00:44:1115 seasons for Lefty.
00:44:13A four-time Cy Young Award winner.
00:44:14The all-time franchise strikeout leader.
00:44:17And I don't know that Aaron Nola is going to get any closer than a real warm second place on
00:44:22that list.
00:44:23Mike Schmidt's the all-time franchise home run leader.
00:44:27Both have had their uniform numbers retired by the Phillies.
00:44:35So we talked about John Schneider and his road to the World Series last year.
00:44:39For Dave Roberts, it's kind of an autopilot, right?
00:44:43It's a familiar drive for Dave.
00:44:45He's done such a great job managing egos and payroll and strategic influence from the front office.
00:44:52This is his fifth all-star managerial gig in his 11th season skippering the Dodgers.
00:44:58Three World Series titles, including back-to-back in 2024 and 2025.
00:45:05Matty, look, when you win Manager of the Year, it's usually these teams that come from behind, right?
00:45:09Teams that you're not expecting.
00:45:11I think it's even harder when it's a team like the Dodgers and Dave Roberts having to lead these men.
00:45:15You are expected to get to the postseason.
00:45:18You are expected to get to the World Series.
00:45:19You are expected to win 90-plus games.
00:45:21That's just as hard, understanding that they want that, and yet you still have to deliver.
00:45:26It's been fantastic of a career for the Dodgers manager and Dave Roberts.
00:45:30He is everything as advertised.
00:45:32He's got the identity of a team.
00:45:34He is a leader of men.
00:45:35And this guy, all he does is continues to win, win, win.
00:45:38And it doesn't matter what team he has or what injuries and missions they go through throughout the season.
00:45:43He is prepared for October.
00:45:44Well, as far as his task here tonight, he's got a really tricky balance to run in terms of his
00:45:51pitching ranks because there are a couple of guys that are here on his roster as pitchers that he'd like
00:45:58to stay away from because their clubs have asked for that.
00:46:01There are a couple of guys who he doesn't want to get up and down more than once.
00:46:05So, he's going to start with Christopher Sanchez.
00:46:08He knows he's got Justin Robleski for more than an inning.
00:46:11But beyond that, he needs eight or nine guys to be perfect tonight to try to win the All-Star
00:46:17game.
00:46:18Boy, that's tough, isn't it?
00:46:19And then you're looking at the other side, too.
00:46:21They've got abundance of pitching.
00:46:22They've got 12, 13 guys.
00:46:24So, it's a little bit different the way you manage.
00:46:26However, they even said Cease can go more than one inning.
00:46:29So, it will be interesting to see if he has a five or six or seven pitch inning.
00:46:33We might see him out there in the second inning for Dave Roberts.
00:46:36Oh, my goodness.
00:46:37He's got to plan it out perfectly for this to work out.
00:46:41Six-man umpire crew, including an umpire who's assigned to the replay desk back in New York City.
00:46:47Alan Porter is the crew chief.
00:46:49He is in his second All-Star game assignment, as is Chris Conroy.
00:46:54But the rest of the umpires, four of the six, are here at an All-Star game for the first
00:46:59time younger.
00:47:00Yeah, that's great to see.
00:47:02Look, the game is evolving.
00:47:03The game is changing.
00:47:04We're seeing more young umpires.
00:47:06And, by the way, great young umpires as well, obviously, with the ABS system and everything that's going on.
00:47:11They are very aware of this new metrics of the game right now.
00:47:14Alan Porter is a Philly area native, so really special day for him.
00:47:18He had his kids over at the FanFest Village today.
00:47:20He really took in the whole atmosphere.
00:47:23Not to mention, he is an unbelievably good umpire.
00:47:26A very good umpire, a guy that you can talk to as well, get a good feeling of the strike
00:47:30zone.
00:47:31I've always felt like he's very neutral, right?
00:47:33He's not going to be so hitterish or so more on the pitching side.
00:47:37He'll be neutral.
00:47:37He'll be ready to go.
00:47:38I'm excited for him.
00:47:39You know, he had the plate last year for that epic six-hour, 17-inning game between the Tigers and
00:47:46the Mariners in the Division Series.
00:47:47And I think he might have missed three pitches.
00:47:50Wow.
00:47:51It's just an unbelievable effort.
00:47:53We've got some...
00:47:54I think these are invited guests, wouldn't you?
00:47:57I would imagine these guys are not coming in unsanctioned.
00:48:00This is rehearsed.
00:48:02And dropping from the skies to help mark the 250th anniversary of the United States.
00:48:09So while these parachuters parachutes, it's supposed to want some all-star game history.
00:48:15The American League leads the all-time series, and the American League has won 10 of the last 12.
00:48:21There was a little run in the 70s and 80s where the NL was dominant.
00:48:25Boy, that's been completely reversed because the AL has won 30 of the last 40.
00:48:30They didn't start doing the most valuable player until 1962, and that went to Maury Wills of the Dodgers that
00:48:36year.
00:48:36As we mentioned, this is the fifth time the city of Philadelphia has played host,
00:48:40and the first time here at Citizens Bank Park.
00:48:44I mean, you're looking at the numbers right now, right?
00:48:4677 selections, including, obviously, the injuries and replacements,
00:48:50but 36 players selected to each event for the first time.
00:48:53A lot of rookies as well.
00:48:55I'm excited to see Christopher Sanchez.
00:48:57We saw Pedro Martinez starting off a game in Boston as well at his hometown, and he was electric.
00:49:03I mean, he was fantastic as it gets.
00:49:06Christopher Sanchez, I talked to him during the clubhouse, and I asked him,
00:49:09how do you feel?
00:49:09He says, oh, I can't wait.
00:49:11I'm going to be the second Dominican once again to start a game in your hometown.
00:49:15I'm going to be lights out.
00:49:18All-stars are making their way back in from their warm-ups.
00:49:20The parachuting is done.
00:49:22The bunting is being rolled up.
00:49:24Umpires have taken their ceremonial photographs.
00:49:28Lineup cards have been exchanged, and we are getting closer to baseball here at the 96th Annual Major League Baseball
00:49:35All-Star Game.
00:49:36So for Dylan Cease, the history of Toronto Blue Jays starting in an All-Star Game is, I guess, rather
00:49:45brief.
00:49:45It's intimate group.
00:49:47He is the fourth Blue Jay to get the ball to start an All-Star Game.
00:49:51We mentioned earlier that the most recent Blue Jay is also the most recent Philly, and that's the late great
00:49:57Hall of Famer Roy Halladay.
00:49:58So you know Dylan a little bit.
00:50:01I don't think the honor is lost on him to represent Toronto, to represent Canada, and represent the organization.
00:50:09Yeah, no question about it.
00:50:10When I talk to him, I feel like he's the most interesting man in baseball, right?
00:50:14This guy just loves pitching, loves to compete.
00:50:17Look, 98 and a third innings, 148 strikeouts to a 2-5-6 ERA.
00:50:22It feels like it's interesting.
00:50:24This is the first All-Star that he's had.
00:50:26It feels like he should have been All-Star many, many times before in the past.
00:50:30But this is a guy that's going to be electric, throwing 100 miles an hour with that slider.
00:50:34I can't wait to watch this.
00:50:35Yeah, I had to triple-check it.
00:50:38We were getting ready for this, and you're pretty familiar with guys who've been here before.
00:50:42And I'm like, wait a minute, Dylan Cease, never an All-Star?
00:50:44Here's some of the new guys talking to the old guy, Justin Verlander, in his 10th and final,
00:50:49having announced his retirement at the end of this year, visiting with Kevin McGonigal.
00:50:55And Nick Kurtz is there, some of the first-time All-Stars representing the American League side.
00:51:02What are the chances JV gets in the game tonight?
00:51:04Zero.
00:51:05Yeah.
00:51:06I don't think so.
00:51:07I was afraid you're going to say that.
00:51:08If you're seeing Verlander right there, hanging out with his phone, yeah, zero chance.
00:51:14This guy will.
00:51:15This guy's batting second.
00:51:17A very comfortable spot for Juan Soto.
00:51:19But let's get you to the American League starting lineup for John Schneider.
00:51:23Here's how the visitors align.
00:51:25Again, the AL has won 10 of the last 12 All-Star matchups.
00:51:30Mike Trout, in his 12th All-Star season,
00:51:33the three-time MVP in Millville, New Jersey native, will lead things off.
00:51:37Your Don Alvarez, he is the leader for American MVP honors this year.
00:51:41A four-time All-Star.
00:51:42Shea Langoliers is here for the first time.
00:51:44Junior Camonero and Bobby Witt bat four and five.
00:51:47Cody Bellinger, an All-Star for the first time since 2019.
00:51:51His third honor this season.
00:51:53Ben Rice is here for the first time.
00:51:55Riley Green and another first-time All-Star Toronto's Ernie Clement.
00:52:00As we mentioned, it's the 29-year-old Phillies ace Christopher Sanchez on the mound for the National League.
00:52:0720 starts for the left-hander.
00:52:0811 and 4 with a 2-6-2 ERA.
00:52:11He is extremely excited.
00:52:12One thing we're going to see is a lot of ground balls.
00:52:15The sinker change-up combo, that's what he's going to feature.
00:52:17I'm very intrigued how he goes after it with Mike Trout.
00:52:21Mike Trout loves the ball down in the zone.
00:52:23Christopher Sanchez loves to throw the ball down in the zone.
00:52:26This is going to be an epic battle.
00:52:27And, of course, we're going to see this at the All-Star game.
00:52:29Why not?
00:52:30And, of course, you know, nobody's trying to play the game to manufacture runs in the first inning of an
00:52:37All-Star game.
00:52:38Mike's going to be looking to go yard here.
00:52:41He's been an All-Star MVP twice, won it in back-to-back years.
00:52:47And Trout will lead things off, followed by Alvarez and Langoliers.
00:52:52You know, a little bit more on Sanchez as well.
00:52:55He is the fourth-ever pitcher to make, a 14th-ever pitcher, I beg your pardon,
00:53:00to make an All-Star start at home.
00:53:03Sixth Philly to start an All-Star game.
00:53:06And one of a number of natives of the Dominican Republic
00:53:10who have started on the mound is an All-Star.
00:53:15You know what?
00:53:17The best of the game.
00:53:25Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley, still huge fan favorites here, pumping up the crowd.
00:53:33And Mike Trout is ready to lead off the 96th All-Star game.
00:53:42Mike's parents are here.
00:53:45His two kids are here.
00:53:47Mike's wife is here.
00:53:48And I would imagine half the town of Millville, New Jersey,
00:53:50is somewhere around the ballpark tonight.
00:53:53Yeah, that's a good call.
00:54:02It's the third time that Mike has led off in an All-Star lineup.
00:54:11And here we go.
00:54:13Sanchez is ready.
00:54:14Greg Baldwin is ready.
00:54:15And the 96th Annual All-Star game is underway
00:54:17with a foul ball off the bat of Mike Trout.
00:54:21I don't think we were going to see anything else, right?
00:54:24It's not going to take a pitch.
00:54:25Know what's coming.
00:54:26That sinker, that change-up.
00:54:39And Trout takes a fastball upstairs, a ball and a strike.
00:54:43Mike's Nitro Zone, as Yonder mentions, has always been around the knees.
00:54:48One of the best low-ball hitters of his generation.
00:54:57One thing with Mike Trout, too, he gets lefties this year, 9.05 OPS, right?
00:55:01Tells me he's doing a lot of damage.
00:55:03Not only just getting on base, but he's slugging.
00:55:08There have been ten players
00:55:11to hit as many as three homers in an All-Star game.
00:55:18Counts two and two to Trout.
00:55:20Mike's hit a pair.
00:55:27Alvarez and Langoliers to follow.
00:55:29Two balls and two strikes to the 12th-time All-Star.
00:55:41He's just so good.
00:55:42I mean, just being able to just follow that pitch off right there.
00:55:46For a guy in Sanchez, he doesn't throw all that many breaking balls.
00:55:49A lot more fastballs than changeup.
00:55:55Mentioned Trout's back-to-back All-Star MVP awards.
00:55:58He's the only player to ever do that.
00:55:59And a strikeout victim to start the night tonight.
00:56:05Well, he had his chance, right?
00:56:06He got some pitches to hit.
00:56:07He followed them off.
00:56:08And what does he come with in Sanchez?
00:56:10That changeup.
00:56:11That's a nasty changeup.
00:56:12I mean, you can essentially wait for it.
00:56:14You still just won't hit it.
00:56:15That's how good an elite it's been.
00:56:19I think we should explain for our international viewership, Yonder, that you're going to hear
00:56:25a lot of boos tonight.
00:56:26Oh.
00:56:26We've already heard them a lot.
00:56:29Essentially, every non-Philly or everybody not from the area, and that's like Trout and
00:56:36McGonagall, their local guys, is going to get booed tonight.
00:56:38Yeah, or everybody that's had history against the Phillies in the postseason, like this
00:56:42guy right here, Jordan Alvarez, winning a World Series game, that big home run against
00:56:49Alvarado.
00:56:52I mean, if you're met, you're going to get booed tonight.
00:56:54If you're brave, you're going to get booed tonight.
00:56:55It doesn't matter what the result of your plate appearance is.
00:56:59It's just kind of how they do things here.
00:57:03Counts a ball and a strike on Jordan Alvarez.
00:57:08Major League Baseball's leader in OPS, slug and total bases, and chalk him up with
00:57:14one total base on a single up the middle here in the first.
00:57:17What else is new, right?
00:57:19His second and batting average, first in home runs, first in RBIs, but let's take a look
00:57:24at his arsenal.
00:57:25Christopher Sanchez, we know about that sinker down in the zone.
00:57:28He throws it about 43% of the time.
00:57:30That change of slider combo off that sinker, that's what he's going to go through.
00:57:33Simplifying approach for a pitcher.
00:57:36The problem is, as a hitter, trying to hit all that movement.
00:57:38It is nasty.
00:57:41One on, one out for ace catcher Shea Langeleers.
00:57:47Langeleers here by virtue of a really big first half of the season.
00:57:5331 homers last year, sitting on 21 already this season, and an OPS over 800.
00:58:03He's also a guy that loves facing lefties.
00:58:06This year, he's got an OPS over 1,000.
00:58:09I mean, he crushes fastballs at the top of the zone.
00:58:13For a guy who's not considered as a catcher, a big-body frame, this guy's got a lot of juice.
00:58:20Alvarez off first.
00:58:21One gone to start the ballgame.
00:58:232-0 pitch to Langeleers.
00:58:24Misses inside.
00:58:25Three balls in those strikes now.
00:58:29He got off to an incredible hot start.
00:58:31I mean, March and April, he was hitting close to 330.
00:58:35Eight home runs.
00:58:36I mean, one of the premier offensive catchers in the game.
00:58:42First ace catcher to start in an all-star game since Terry Steinbach in the late 80s,
00:58:47and Sanchez loses Langeleers on a four-finch walk.
00:58:55So first and second with one away, and a chance for Junior Camonero,
00:59:00who is an all-star returnee, back-to-back all-star appearances,
00:59:05back-to-back appearances in the home run derby.
00:59:08Though the early exit yesterday was something that nobody thought was coming.
00:59:13Boy, he was one of the heavy favorites last night.
00:59:15One of the fastest hands and bats beats in the game of baseball.
00:59:20There's a little teammate action right here in the World Baseball Classic.
00:59:23Both teams, both guys representing Dominican Republic.
00:59:29Junior's bat speed, 80 miles an hour, 79.9 miles an hour,
00:59:36his average swing speed, and that is the fastest in the league.
00:59:39How about his June, huh?
00:59:40Ten home runs, 24 RBIs.
00:59:43He went on a hot streak.
00:59:46Became the youngest player in Major League history to Homer in six straight games.
00:59:53I talked to him in the clubhouse earlier today, and I asked him,
00:59:55what gets you going?
00:59:56He says, it's not so much pulling the baseball.
00:59:58When I'm staying on pitches...
