NBC NFL analyst Chris Simms dropped his top 10 list of the greatest quarterbacks in their prime. And where he ranked Tom Brady is laughable, to say the least.
Transcript
00:00People think Chris Sims, though, believed they could win
00:03with any top 15 quarterback.
00:04He was the one who was cited as a former member of Bill Staff
00:07who had said that.
00:08Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:08That's what Bill thinks.
00:09Sims was all about Belichick, thinking it was Belichick
00:11that was pulling the strings and not Brady.
00:13I mean, I don't think I was living here at the time
00:15when Chris Sims was on this team for, right, just for training camp.
00:18I don't think he made the team for.
00:21But I think he was here and backed up Brady for a training camp, I think.
00:25So Chris Sims came out with a list,
00:27and it was the top 10 quarterbacks in their prime,
00:32ranking the top 10 quarterbacks from when they were in their prime.
00:35First, let me ask you this, Ted.
00:36What year do you believe Tom Brady was in his prime?
00:40Oh, I mean, it's got to be 2007 to 2017.
00:46See, I would say his best year, like the one where I was like.
00:49Oh, just the one year?
00:50I'm just trying to take one sample.
00:53When you visualize Tom Brady.
00:54Yeah, with Randy Moss and Welker.
00:5650 touchdowns.
00:57No question.
00:58I think the exact same thing.
01:00So just imagine that.
01:01He was 30 by that.
01:03Is that like the average age?
01:05Do you think that's prime athlete in football?
01:07For that position, I would say.
01:09For other positions, I'd say you're on the back nine.
01:13Yeah.
01:14Yeah.
01:14So here are Chris Sims' ranking of the top 10 quarterbacks in their prime.
01:21Let's go to number one.
01:23Number one is Peyton Manning.
01:25Okay.
01:25Oh, boy.
01:27That's, you know, a little bit of a hot take.
01:28Oh, boy.
01:29But you knew he'd be near the top.
01:31Sure.
01:32Prime Peyton Manning was amazing.
01:34He was a fantastic quarterback.
01:35But he's number one, not Brady.
01:37All right.
01:37So obviously, let's see who number two is.
01:39Number two is Patrick Mahomes.
01:41Okay.
01:42All right.
01:43Patrick Mahomes should also be near the top.
01:45Mm-hmm.
01:46So where's Tom Brady?
01:47He's got to be number three.
01:48Number three for you in a prime year's quarterback countdown list is, oh, Aaron Rodgers.
01:54Oh.
01:54Oh, that guy.
01:56No.
01:57No.
01:58I mean, in his prime, man.
02:00I don't know, man.
02:01In his prime.
02:02He did win three MVP awards, I think.
02:05His one title.
02:05I know.
02:06It's only one title.
02:07But, man, in his prime.
02:08Four MVPs, actually.
02:10Sad to admit that.
02:11He did win four.
02:12All right.
02:12Well, listen.
02:13Did he really?
02:13Yeah.
02:14Four MVPs one time.
02:15One Super Bowl.
02:18If that says, if that doesn't say Aaron Rodgers, what else?
02:22Exactly.
02:23All right.
02:23So if you're going to go to Aaron Rodgers, then Tom Brady's got to be number four, right?
02:26Yeah.
02:27And number four is going to be John Elway.
02:29Oh, I love John.
02:30All right.
02:30John Elway.
02:31Yeah.
02:32Okay.
02:32Then he's got to be number five, right?
02:34At least.
02:34Number five quarterback would be, is going to be Brett Favre.
02:37All right, Brett.
02:38I love Brett.
02:39The gunslinger.
02:41Another one title guy.
02:42The gunslinger.
02:42He did win three MVPs, too.
02:44Brett Favre, yes, he did.
02:45Yeah.
02:45Yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:47Does it say, how old was he when he won his last one?
02:50When he's last MVP?
02:51Was it all with Green Bay?
02:53I'd be curious.
02:54Was there any when he was?
02:54Because that Vikings year.
02:55Vikings year was insane, dude.
02:57Yeah, it was pretty damn good.
02:58I don't know if he won MVP, but he was, that first year was great.
03:01It was unbelievable.
03:02Yeah.
03:03He kind of shoved it in their face pretty good.
03:05Oh, big time.
03:05Big time.
03:06All right, let's go to, okay, so that was number five?
03:08That'd be six?
03:08Brady, come on.
03:09Brady's got to be six.
03:10Number six is going to be Josh Allen.
03:15Who's never won a Super Bowl.
03:17And I mean, he had five turnovers in that division round.
03:21Just saying, it's Denver.
03:22Yeah, he had a great play.
03:23All right, so he's not number six.
03:26Brady's got to be seven, right?
03:28Number seven, just ahead of Dan Marino is?
03:30Lamar Jackson.
03:31Okay.
03:32This is insane.
03:33Lamar Jackson ahead of Tom Brady.
03:36So I guess the next one's Dan Marino then, right?
03:39Number eight, their peak year.
03:41Dan Marino.
03:41Okay.
03:43Dan Marino's, you know, I would probably put him in the top ten.
03:46Sure.
03:47Yeah, for sure.
03:47Dan Marino's in the top ten.
03:48So Fran Tarkenton is next, or what are we going to do?
03:51Who's number nine?
03:51Number nine for you.
03:52There's going to be Tom Brady.
03:57Wow, wow, wow, wow.
03:59Does he give criteria on how he's picked these?
04:01Just in their prime.
04:01It's such a bizarre, like, you know, in their prime.
04:05I don't know.
04:05Okay, so here's how you make an argument for Tom Brady to be a nice.
04:08Here's what he said.
04:09This was his justification.
04:11He said, Tom Brady did get afforded the luxury, especially in his prime,
04:15in the early prime years of, we are not asking you to carry the team.
04:19Belichick is going to come up with an unbelievable defensive game plan.
04:22That's a little bit of a nice towards you there.
04:24Okay.
04:25He added that Brady, quote, was not going to extend plays
04:29and needed strong pass protection to thrive,
04:32unlike some of the other quarterbacks on his list
04:34who overcame difficult circumstances with sheer talent.
04:39I don't understand.
04:41First of all, like that, why is he talking about the first three Super Bowls
04:45when that's not him in his prime?
04:47Yeah, he went to seven other ones, Chris, after that.
04:50Just seven more.
04:52By the way, Favre MVPs in 95, 6, and 97.
04:54Three years in a row, ages 26, 27, 28.
04:57Yeah, okay.
04:57All right.
04:58I mean, this is a joke.
04:59It's such a joke.
05:01It's almost not even worth giving the attention it deserves,
05:04other than that's obviously what he wants.
05:06And the region, Keefe brought this up, is in a weird state with Brady.
05:10You almost feel like not defending him based on how weird it feels.
05:14You know, Brady lately is weird.
05:16He's just an odd guy.
05:17But here's the difference.
05:18You may not be able to defend his personal actions off the field.
05:22He's a weird-ass dude and kind of a dick.
05:24But on the field?
05:25Killer.
05:26It's a killer.
05:27He's the best of all time, unquestioned.
05:29There's not even any kind of blurry vision of it being anybody else other than Tom Brady.
05:37Like, his number one quarterback in his prime is Peyton Manning, who never left the pocket.
05:42So, I'm thinking, well, maybe he likes guys that leave the pocket, guys that are athletes.
05:45They'll put Mike Vick in there or something like that.
05:47Right.
05:47Yeah, but no.
05:47His number one quarterback is Peyton Manning, who lived five yards behind the center.
05:52Right.
05:53Which is where Tom lived.
05:54So, wait a minute, you can't, Peyton Manning's ball was, like, not a tight spiral.
06:01I mean, he got it done.
06:02It was a very simple system.
06:04They played 11 personnel.
06:05They didn't motion a lot.
06:07Dude, Tom was on another level.
06:09I'm sorry, Peyton.
06:10Love you, bro.
06:11Love you.
06:117-1 against you.
06:12Love you.
06:13You're a great quarterback.
06:14But, to me, the two styles, you can compare the two styles because they're both pocketbacks.
06:19And, to have them eight players apart is ridiculous.
06:24Is it a hot take that I would put Mahomes ahead of Peyton on that list?
06:28No, I don't think it's hot.
06:29Okay.
06:29No.
06:29Because, if I was looking at that list, I would go Brady, Mahomes, probably Peyton third.
06:36I got to think a little bit more.
06:37But, the first two.
06:38I mean, Mahomes won three titles.
06:39The other guys won two.
06:40I mean, that's not crazy at all.
06:41You just feel like he's a better, bigger winner.
06:44I think I've seen more holy crap moments from Mahomes than I have from Peyton.
06:48And, Peyton's had some great ones.
06:50But, Mahomes was magic.
06:52Now, 14 Pro Bowls for Peyton Manning to six right now for Mahomes.
06:55So, it's just the body of work.
06:57The longevity is pretty amazing.
06:59No.
06:59But, I would put Mahomes ahead.
07:01Like, you're talking about in their primes.
07:02If that's the whole thing about this list.
07:04Mahomes is ahead of Peyton.
07:05Yeah.
07:05For sure.
07:05I would think so, too.
07:06For sure.
07:07I mean, you know what?
07:08Peyton had really good defenses.
07:10And, he had Edron James.
07:12He had great tight ends.
07:13He had great wide receivers.
07:15I mean, you know, Mahomes had, obviously, Travis Kelsey.
07:18But, I think Patrick Mahomes did more with less than Peyton did.
07:23Oh, sure.
07:24And, you know, listen.
07:25Brady didn't always have the best weapons.
07:27No.
07:27So, I mean, Chris Sims just hates Tom Brady.
07:31And, you know what?
07:31He got our clicks.
07:32He got us talking about them.
07:34And, once again, just like Bedard.
07:35Don't.
07:36Whatever you do, Christian Gonzalez, don't talk about me.
07:39And, let them retweet my stories.
07:41Please don't do it.
07:42Which, of course, makes them retweet it.
07:43Yeah.
07:44Where's Joe Montana on that list?
07:45That's an interesting thing.
07:46That's a great point.
07:48I mean, I guess you would put him.
07:49He didn't have a prime.
07:49Would you put him ahead of Marino?
07:51I know that he won more, obviously.
07:52But, Marino's numbers were insane.
07:54You know what?
07:55Sorry.
07:55I have two.
07:56Yeah.
07:56Four Super Bowls.
07:57Really?
07:57Yeah.
07:57Yeah.
07:57You kind of got two.
07:58I thought you went the other way.
07:59No.
07:59I put Marino.
08:00I put, excuse me, Montana in front of Marino.
08:02Montana out of that.
08:02Yeah.
08:02Yeah.
08:03Well, there you go.
08:04Somebody said, who do you want other than Tom Brady as your winning quarterback?
08:08Like, if you had one game, who would you want?
08:10Like, in their prime.
08:11Anybody better than Tom Brady?
08:12Nobody.
08:13No.
08:13Nobody.
08:14No one.
08:14No one.
08:15Uh-uh.
08:15Sorry.
08:15None.
08:16Someone said Brady treated Sims poorly when Sims was on the roster there for that preseason,
08:20and that's why Sims doesn't like him.
