01:57We've got Outride the Devil, the documentary Outride the Devil that has been premiered a few spots, premiering out.
02:10We're going to be talking with Rusty Wright and Rain Level, if I'm saying that right.
02:17We're going to be chatting with them.
02:18That is the director, producer of that documentary, so we're going to talk to them about that a little bit.
02:26And then there's a good possibility that the backcountry horsemen of Texas will have a couple folks joining us later
02:34on,
02:34so don't miss that because that's some good information that you're going to need to know.
02:41Crazy stuff's been happening in the news.
02:43We've got some of that for you.
02:44We ain't got any crazy odd news stories for you today, so we're just going to go with some regular
02:49news.
02:50But a lot of stuff has happened that we're going to get to with that.
02:56But where have I been?
02:57We'll talk about that.
02:58I went and seen some stuff.
03:00In Jefferson, Texas, I went out there.
03:03And, man, I've been watching some crazy stuff on TV.
03:06Crazy stuff's happening.
03:07Because I watch a lot of documentaries more than I watch regular shows because it's more realistic, so I'd watch
03:13that.
03:13But I've got a crazy trailer that I'm going to throw out for you here in a little bit, too,
03:17that you're going to want to watch.
03:19Because the twists and turns, by the time you get to the end of it, you're going to be wondering,
03:22what did I just watch?
03:24So you're going to want to check that out.
03:27But, no, so the rodeo world kind of got a little shook up this week because something crazy happened in
03:35Vegas at the barrel race.
03:37So here's a little clip of a little news clip here to kind of fill you in, and I'll let
03:42you know.
03:43A 17-year-old girl locked up tonight for going on a stabbing rampage in Las Vegas.
03:48And the victims here were three horses that were competing in barrel racing.
03:53We want to bring in KOCO's Abigail Ogle in the newsroom.
03:56Abby, this is absolutely wild.
03:58Guys, this story, just the National Barrel Race Horse Association confirming that this happened at one of their weekend competitions
04:05in Las Vegas.
04:06Police got a call just after 2 a.m. Saturday.
04:09They found an injured animal inside the South Point Arena.
04:13Once they got there, this is kind of hard to see, officers found three horses with stab wounds.
04:20They are going to be okay, but they were hurt badly enough that they can't continue in this barrel racing
04:26competition.
04:27The teenage suspect was somehow able to access the barn before stabbing these animals.
04:33She was removed and taken into custody.
04:36We have checked.
04:37None of the injured horses are from Oklahoma.
04:39We know barrel racing is really big here.
04:41The suspect's NBHA membership has been suspended.
04:47Suspended?
04:48Suspended membership?
04:49How about put her in the jail?
04:51So what I've gathered from this story and the folks that I've talked to,
04:56so the girl supposedly was entered there also, but she'd been stalking one of the girls.
05:04She'd been sending crazy messages.
05:09There's reports that she was having trouble at school, and they'd been reaching out to her mother about concern over,
05:17I don't know,
05:18I guess in the last couple of years it's become a big word everybody uses, mental health.
05:23You know, concerns about that or whatever.
05:24But anyhow, so at Vegas, at the barrel show, she stabbed, I think she allegedly stabbed, I think, three horses
05:34over there.
05:35So that's pretty crazy, pretty crazy stuff.
05:39You never know what's going to happen when somebody's going to flip out on you.
05:44And that happened in Vegas, so that's crazy stuff.
05:47Speaking of other crazy stuff, I guess I'm going to have to throw this at you because I can't talk
05:51enough about it
05:52to make you understand what crazy things are happening on this show.
05:57But it just came out.
05:59It's called The Many Lives of Benjamin Kyle.
06:02It is a crazy, crazy story.
06:05There's only like three or four episodes, or maybe four episodes.
06:08But the longer this thing goes, the crazier the story is.
06:14So if you've got a little bit of time, you're laid up at the house, maybe it started raining this
06:18weekend,
06:18and you can't go outside, you need to check out this documentary called The Many Lives of Benjamin Kyle.
06:31Eleven years ago, I came across this insane story.
06:35It was about a man that had amnesia.
06:39I was found behind a dumpster.
06:42I don't know how I got there.
06:45And I don't have memories of who I am.
06:50Initially, we really wanted to help Benjamin Kyle.
06:53But the more that we learned about him, the more that he started to get angry.
06:58All I did was raise more questions.
07:01Who the hell was he for 30 years?
07:04Was he found bloody and beaten?
07:07No.
07:07If there's no blood for his trauma, then how did he lose his memory?
07:11Do you really have amnesia, or are you hiding something?
07:15If anyone wants to get rid of a body, this would be a good place to shove one off.
07:19It'd be years before they found it.
07:23We have to keep him on the hook.
07:25Like, he has to think that we still believe in him.
07:27We got the evidence.
07:28I have the DNA.
07:29I have the cup.
07:31Is Chris really a producer, or is he some sort of an investigator?
07:35This guy's starting to f*** with us.
07:36What makes you think Benjamin Kyle was it?

07:42If I could go back, I would never have done this show.

08:08That was a crazy show, because just when you thought it was going this way,
08:14it just goes a whole different direction, and by the time it's over,
08:20by the time it ends, you're just sitting there scratching your head going,
08:24what just happened?

08:29If you haven't seen it, you've got to watch it.
08:30That's crazy stuff.
08:31I watch too much TV as it is, so that's kind of what happens.

09:12For Angela to battle through what she has, that's absolutely amazing.
09:15This is one of the great untold Western stories.
09:19I don't feel like Western heritage is made.
09:22I feel like it's bred into you.
09:24Luckily for me, I got to inherit a legacy.

09:33So everything you see here is the same thing that Billy the Kid saw way back in the old days.
09:38It's something that's born in you.
09:41I was in junior high when we found out about mom's breast cancer.
09:46Had to start taking, they call the red devil.
09:48I never looked in the mirror for eight years.
09:51I was never going to see sickness.
09:53I was never going to see death.
09:54I was never going to let myself think that I wasn't going to live.
09:59The love of the life, it never goes away.
10:02Due to the cancer circumstances, I'd lost the ability to ride.

10:11Cowboys come from every shape and color from all over the world.
10:14It's always been a part of who we are in Indian country.
10:17There wasn't just Jackson Sun down there.
10:20Everything about rodeos is wild.
10:22Gambling on yourself, your health, everything.

10:30It's like jumping out of an airplane.
10:34When my mom started running barrels again,
10:37Bugs took her to six pro rodeo wins.
10:40They made their first Canadian national finals rodeo.
10:43You have to get back to the NFR.
10:45This is the NFR.
10:48Don't get no bigger than this.
10:50It is a lot of pressure.
10:51It is our Super Bowl.
10:52It's the honor of a lifetime.
10:59It makes the NFR a little further out of reach.
11:03Your fight and your will to live is what's going to keep you here.
11:07You have to find that person.
11:09You have to find that thing that makes you want to fight harder for anything beyond you.
11:14And that was my daughter.
11:32All right.
11:36Outride the Devil.
11:38so let's find out exactly what's going on here and we're going to get joined up here with uh
11:46with rain and uh and rusty rusty wright's gonna hop on with us and we're gonna find out what is
11:51happening with this documentary what's going on guys hey how's it going oh it's going good going
12:00good so uh so i guess rain tell me a little bit i haven't i haven't seen it i've seen
12:06the trailer
12:07and i've read up on it so kind of tell me a little bit about how how this came about
12:12and how you
12:12decided to put this put this together and and put this show up well how it came about pepper is
12:20uh i
12:20was on my way to the fort worth stock showing rodeo uh in 23 and i was going to meet
12:27a buddy of mine
12:28eric nelson he's an emmy and tony award when an actor there folks will be familiar with him from
12:33taylor's show 1883 uh i stopped at the texas rodeo hall of fame in pecos even though i didn't
12:40actually have time to do that i went in walked around and the very last inductee was angela ganter
12:48and you know i knew of the ganters but mostly from jackie ganter from when jackie won rookie of the
12:54year in 2015 but i did not know uh what her mom had gone through and so when i read
13:01that story i read
13:02it two three four times the minute i got outside to texas rodeo hall of fame i started making phone
13:07calls and see if anybody had the rights to angela's story they didn't uh so i contacted her met with
13:14her and uh the rest is history uh as they might say okay and rusty how'd you get in how'd
13:21you get in
13:21on this i was just lucky enough to be walking by in cheyenne and uh they asked just asked if
13:28they
13:28asked me a couple questions and you know i was happy to do it now i'm super happy i did
13:33it you
13:33know i'm really happy to be part of this deal it's super awesome then my little sister got in it
13:39kind
13:39of turned into you know a family ordeal for us too okay all right yeah i mean rusty uh i
13:48have to say
13:48pepper uh when you make it a movie particularly like a documentary um when it's not scripted you
13:55really need to find a direction and when we did the interview with rusty that he contributed
14:02um he really provided that direction because he really he brought his heart and his soul
14:08and it set the tone for the entire movie so when people go and watch outriding the devil um it
14:15wouldn't be the way that it is at it not being for rusty and he's right it kind of became
14:20a right
14:21family uh movie because not only is rusty in it we gave uh his younger sister lily uh her acting
14:29debut stetson's in it uh statler's in it writers in it and their mom uh sheree wright is also in
14:36it
14:36you got you got the whole family in there then we sure did we tried to get cody but i
14:41just couldn't
14:41hook up with him quick enough okay all right so the how does how does the story go i know
14:49that she
14:49she battled cancer she battled stage four breast cancer she battled that for a while
14:53and got you know went from being being down to being up back to riding so how does how does
14:59the
15:00story how does the story go in the in the show well because you know angela has this incredible
15:07lineage uh her great grandparents were amongst the first to ranch as pioneer ranches on the brazos in
15:14texas when it was still the comanche nation um and through that we're able to really use a sweeping
15:22canvas um to talk about you know the history of the west not just frontier texas the evolution
15:30of ranching and the cattle industry how rodeo emerged from that um all of the different cultural
15:38influences that came to rodeo and we bring it all the way up like to angela's life
15:43what she went through you know with the cancer ordeal overcoming stage four cancer and then her
15:49comeback uh and so we actually finished the movie in 2024 at cheyenne frontier days when angela makes
15:56the finals um so it's it has a lot of breadth uh to the movie it's not just you know
16:03angela's battle
16:03with cancer um there's there's a lot in the movie that you know breaks the stereotypes that people
16:10outside of the western community or outside of the rodeo community have about the western way of
16:16life and particularly about rodeo um and so folks you know like rusty stetson shad money mayfield zeke
16:24who you saw in the trailer um you know a lot of the top top rodeo athletes came forward and
16:30contributed
16:31to that okay and for you rusty for you to be part of this and and and help out you
16:36know in in the show
16:37and and uh and give your thoughts and things on it so what does it mean to you to be
16:41part of of
16:42something like this oh it you know it means the world especially you know the the message that i
16:48feel like they're giving it it's i feel like uh you know women of rodeo don't get enough recognition
16:55in the the ones in the arena especially the ones you know behind the scenes so i was happy to
17:01you know
17:01share my thoughts and and tell everybody what it meant to me and you know i just i'm super stoked
17:08to be a part of it and i can't wait for everybody to see it so i'm really excited all
17:14right so when
17:15uh i think i said something about there was a premiere here there so when does it when's it
17:19going to be is it completely out or when does it come completely out well we had the worldwide
17:24premiere at the national finals rodeo and we're kind of going to complete a unique double here
17:29in uh on june 13th because it's part of the kickoff of the college national finals rodeo which will be
17:35its wyoming premiere uh that's june 13th then we go to the wire rodeo and world championship indian
17:43relay races in sheridan wyoming that's on july 5th and then we open their cheyenne frontier days
17:49uh on july 16th in cheyenne and in terms of streaming uh we're going to go to streaming
17:58in the fall of this year uh after the canadian premiere which is in calgary in october uh and so
18:07if folks follow the cowboy lifestyle uh network they're going to be able to find out when the
18:13streaming date is and when it will be available okay all right all right i gotta i gotta ask i
18:19gotta
18:19ask where is that that accent come from where's that accent come from i am uh a romar uh and
18:31we
18:31get called gypsies uh and so my accent comes from a lot of different places because our people have
18:37traveled all around the world for about 1200 years so that's as good of an answer that just traveling
18:45okay a traveler's accent there you go that's right that's right that's what that's what i'd call it
18:51so all right and there's a there's a website what's the website out for that if somebody wants to you

20:14no i don't do prca yet i want to upset the people okay so internet people calm down bucky's is
20:24not
20:24kicking you out of the parking lot or are they are they we don't know okay here's what's
20:32happening it says commercial trailers guys commercial trailers if you are hauling because it's been
20:40all over the internet i've reached out to the corporate office multiple times i got crickets
20:46the only people i've been able to make contact with are local bucky's locations you can't even call
20:54them you have to go to the store they're all the phone numbers for bucky's and texas have the same
20:59phone number all right so basically what is happening here is they are kicking out commercial
21:06trucks if you are a commercial vehicle with a dot number or em number on your vehicle they don't want
21:15you there but if you are just headed to the rodeo you're going camping for the weekend you got your
21:20rv hooked up you can still go to bucky's and get diesel and go buy a bunch of stuff what
21:25they're trying
21:25to do is kick out all the hot shot drivers that have started going into bucky's and blocking all
21:33the gas pumps because the same reason why they don't want the 18 wheelers there is because they're
21:37too big you got an 18 wheeler got a 53 foot trailer plus the truck on most of them some
21:41got short
21:42trailers but on average 53 footer and one 18 wheeler is blocking up too many parking spots for
21:48one guy that's driving that 18 wheeler maybe two if they're a team and that's two people blocking up
21:55too much space when you could have a family of five with their rv or their horse trailer on the
22:00way to
22:00the rodeo is going to go in there and buy 200 worth of stuff from bucky's so that's what the
22:05deal is
22:05it's commercial vehicles not personal now some people are there's slippery slope right here
22:11uh if you are hauling your horses with a freight liner which looks like an 18 wheeler to the untrained
22:19eye of the bucky's employee they see an 18 wheeler so it's happened a few times where somebody's been
22:27told hey you got to go and they're like hey this is we're not a hire we're not for hire
22:31we're not
22:31commercial this is how we haul our horses so you're going to run into that as some of the buckies
22:36but in
22:37general you can still run through bucky's with your trailer on if it is not a commercial vehicle
22:43but also you're going to be at the discretion of whichever location you're at and how that manager
22:49feels that day so there you go there's your bucky's boycott don't boycott information for the day
22:59all right prca prca has always got some good stuff going on they've got a series uh that i stumbled
23:04across called the highwayman and uh it's a little featurettes on uh on rodeo athletes and uh there's
23:11a pretty good one here on on weston on weston uh i did not know he used to ride bulls
23:16i know i've
23:16known him for fighting bulls forever but i didn't know he rode at some point but i guess he did
23:21ride
23:21back when he was down there with oh uh clint but anyway they've got little video series out different
23:28athletes different things and here's here's the one on weston i think you'll find it pretty interesting
23:34all reality it's taken me almost my whole career to realize that this isn't something i get to do
23:40forever i mean this is a very very short game especially in my industry you know father time's
23:46undefeated and i've always tried to say like no not today i want to be known as a guy who
23:53can stand
23:54there boldly and go look i'm an imperfect man i have made more mistakes than anybody but god has
24:01blessed me he's given me a great life i just want to show the grace he's given me that i'm
24:07a sinner
24:08living in a sinful world but i can stand here and say that god's grace is above all now in
24:16my career
24:17i want to take advantage of this platform giving back versus trying to use it to promote me
24:26because i've done that for a long time and now it's taking away from what he's given me
24:46actually as a kid i can remember like when my uncles would come home for holidays or whatever
24:51all the stories were just re-ride stories you know like especially now like i understand rodeo
24:56and for a living you just sit around talking about all things you've done on the road
24:59and that's what they do you know keith and uncle terry rodeoed real hard
25:04and they would sit around and just tell rodeo stories about you know whether in cheyenne or you
25:10know fort worth or abilene or all these different spots that i can just remember as a kid thinking like
25:14how cool is that like i i can't wait to do that mom dad let me get on junior bulls
25:21and and things
25:22like that when i was a kid but when it came time to high school you know it was like
25:26no rodeo for me
25:27i played every sport you could think of you know i was a little bitty west texas town you know
25:32i played
25:32football basketball baseball ran track played golf tried to play tennis but they wouldn't let me you know
25:36anything i'd do just to be out of school you know was supposed to play college football and
25:42didn't really work out like i wanted made the team and then decided i was like i'm not gonna play
25:46much so i i'm i'm gonna go back to riding bulls and uh started getting on bulls again on college
25:52and
25:52in college and got on both for maybe four or five years and it just sucked like call it what
26:01it is
26:01wasn't no good and uh i i fought a bull one day and it clicked i'm gonna be a bullfighter
26:15then i started getting into trying to start paying more attention to the greats you know
26:22thankfully you know the internet and youtube and all that was getting bigger by then so it was like
26:26really there wasn't a whole lot of footage of those guys um other than the wrangler bullfights
26:31so watch that and then it was like so i just get on youtube and i was i was watching
26:36videos of tuck i was
26:37watching videos of swisher i was watching videos of harp and nate those guys so it was the guys i'm
26:43fighting bulls with now are the ones who essentially is what i was studying the top guys at the the
26:49highest levels were all freestyle bullfighters and what freestyle bullfighting will teach bullfighters is
26:55how to handle a bull by yourself because now i'm adding a teammate sometimes two teammates and a bull rider
27:04so i've got a bull a bull rider and two there's you know four guys in one spot if you
27:10don't know how
27:10to handle a bull by yourself how are you going to be able to handle it with other people in
27:13your way
27:14a large testament of the guys that are at the highest levels came from that background of
27:20learning the fundamentals of how to handle something that isn't kicking and has more time
27:26timing to it because when those bulls are kicking they're not running the fighting bulls always
27:30running so there's there's not as much time to get away my goals have really never changed when
27:40from the moment i put on cleath to become a bullfighter i said i want to be the best that's
27:46ever done it and that's you'll hear that from all the top guys because that's just their mentality is
27:53it you have to have that sense of i want to be the best in order to become the best
28:00and so now
28:01that goal hasn't changed the lick like i i still wanted to go down as one of the best guys
28:06that's
28:07ever done it i want to be remember the guy who gave back more there's peaks and valleys there's the
28:12highest
28:12of highs there's the lowest of lows but without those lows in your career and life you're never
28:20really confronted with it and through that learning out who you really are and what you're rooted in
28:27will show who you are as a person you have to let go of your pride let go of your
28:32ego and be like look
28:33man this is who i am i'm not the bullfighter that's just something i do and that's the difference of
28:40that as you grow up in life and start to really look at it is go like this is just
28:46something i do not who i am

29:15of good uh a lot of good interviews a lot of good clips similar to what you just saw so

29:21check that out but what i want to talk about now is getting off the phone off the computer put

29:31away saddle your horse and go ride it that's what i'm talking about we're going to talk about riding
29:38your horse and with that we've got brenda from backcountry horsemen of texas that's going to tell
29:43you how you can do that
29:47there you are uh oh hello are you muted unmuted okay there you are hello i can hear you now
29:59great how are you ah i'm here i'm here so so i was telling people to get outside and go
30:06ride their horse so
30:08tell us about about backcountry horsemen of texas it's backcountry horsemen of america right but
30:15then there's also uh divisions and you have backcountry horsemen of texas yes so backcountry
30:22horsemen of america also of course covers the whole u.s but we have a state chapter in texas which
30:29was formed
30:30about three years ago uh this past april we were accepted in um so yes we we promote the trails
30:40keeping
30:40the maintaining and protecting our our texas equestrian trails um
30:48what else do you want me to keep going okay so you guys also uh um you put on events
30:56you have rides
30:57and things um you know texas is kind of warm so we slow down in the summer we do have
31:04a ride coming
31:04up this next weekend which is just a few days away at pat may's but because of the rain i'm
31:12not sure
31:12that we're going to be able to hold it they've got like an 80 chance of rain okay um and
31:18then we slow
31:19down for the summer because texas is just too hot to ride yeah um unless you're up at daylight and
31:25done
31:25by 10 a.m yeah so uh we will resume those uh monthly rides probably in september and that one

31:33t-bar s uh near crockett texas or canard and you can find out about all of our events on

31:41horsemen uh website uh we have a calendar posted that we keep the events we at least try to do

31:49monthly ride except the summer except when it's too when it's too hot uh yeah and i've been i guess

31:55we joined up and went with you guys what we went to uh we went and rode with you guys

32:02yes i know the lbj grasslands yeah which is the grasslands and then we went to the uh
32:08uh oh man with the big lake and all the cows
32:13oh six rs six rs yeah there it is yes six rs outside of buffalo texas yes that i really
32:19i really
32:19like that that rod and that ranch out there that was that was a really really nice place to ride
32:26yes doris and opens that up for us to do our one of our meetings in april where we try
32:32to promote
32:33membership so yes okay and that's the thing you can uh the people want to ride and come out and
32:39ride
32:39them and you got the membership and i mean your membership pretty much goes to you know the
32:43maintenance and and trails also the fundraisers you do tell me a little bit about because i know about
32:49you do the fundraisers tell me about your fundraisers that you do and where that money goes okay so we
32:56promote the trails all over texas um so if there is anywhere that needs help um and again you can
33:04see
33:04these all posted on our website but we help uh haul in gravel for the trails help buy boards for
33:11the
33:11bridges uh we get out there and we cut the trails ourselves uh to keep the trails open so that
33:18we can
33:18ride them um let's see we the state parks we are on one of their groups where they have reached
33:27out to us
33:28to help uh help them uh develop trails at the new state park that's going to be outside of land
33:33passes
33:34as part of the colorado river authority um but they have got more land on the other side of the
33:41road
33:41and they are going to turn it into trails so they've asked for our input and help to see if
33:46we can
33:46develop trails that everybody will enjoy um trails for the 15 or 20 mile rides and trails for the 5
33:55and 10
33:55mile rides so that everybody can enjoy the trails um we also step in and we help buy pens
34:01uh so that we when you are camping with the equestrians you have a pen to put your animal in
34:07or you
34:08have tie posts to tie your animals or high ties so yes we help with that as well okay okay
34:14yeah because
34:15that it helps out we've got some portable pens that we can haul around but it's just a pain to
34:20load them up and drag them in drag them out so if you can go like the most places we've
34:24been
34:24you roll out you got your pens pens set up you throw your horse in fill your water up throw
34:29some
34:30hay in there and then go sit by the fire and eat eat some hamburgers so yes that to me
34:37that's the
34:38best part of of the of the rides in the in the camping is it's not necessarily the rides itself
34:42just sitting around sitting around a campfire exactly exactly so it's not all just the riding
34:48it's enjoying the fellowship around the campfire yeah yeah and then uh so i seen that there was a
34:55new the new state park that just opened so have you been there yes yes um we um misty which
35:05is our
35:05president actually went out and was there on the grand opening and met with them um we've had a little
35:13input in that but we are really uh we're there if they need us but with the state park in
35:19that
35:19situation they were able to fund their own pens and manure dumps and things that we try to be involved
35:25in helping and planning their trails so we've been involved but okay the state park has done a lot of
35:33that okay and we're happy to have them right and then the other the other thing to tell the people
35:37is
35:37if you don't have a horse don't park at the horse sites well that is an issue coming up so
35:44we are
35:45going to go before uh to the capital on august 19th um and that is our big issue we are
35:52only going to
35:52give it be given about two minutes to speak but that is the issue we want to address because we
35:58as
35:59equestrians once we pull up and we want to or we decide uh during the week that we want to
36:04go camping
36:05and we want to take our horses when you look on the websites our campsites are booked and if you
36:11were to get there you would find regular campers and kids riding their bicycles and taking spaces
36:17that are really designated for us yeah so that is going to be a big thing before when we go
36:23to austin
36:24august 19th anybody who would love to go we need to show a good strong equestrian presence yeah so yes
36:33yeah because that you get out you it's enough hauling the big old trailer down there and you get
36:38down there and you got a bicycle in the pens or a little tent set up out there by the
36:44your parking
36:45spot so yes yes and then you have the people who want to come up and feed your animals and
36:52it kids that want to play around the back of your horse yeah it can be pretty dangerous for them
36:58they just don't realize it so be a learning experience for that kid so as far as events i
37:05wanted to bring up we have an event this summer um and it's it's kind of an i spy game
37:11um and we're
37:13very active on facebook as well so if you look up the backcountry horsemen of texas on facebook
37:18um there is an i spy game and you don't have to have a horse you don't have to go
37:22trail riding
37:24you just have to take pictures and collect points for instance i took a picture today
37:30of a creek with a waterfall and that qualified for one of the uh the the i spa things okay
37:38um
37:38they're real catchy and wordy um you get extra points for animals or signs anything to do with
37:44equestrian but again you don't have to have the horse you don't have to go camping
37:48um or riding the trails to get this okay so i encourage everybody to go and look at our facebook
37:55page um and participate we love people to join us i seen that i was wondering what that was i

38:01that i think i seen that today and i was like what is this i spy it's kind of fun
38:06yeah the last i
38:07spy that we did with y'all was looking for ducks oh yes yes yes yes that was the duck

38:14that was our that was our fundraiser we try to promote anything we can to create money
38:21to help with our equestrian camping and trails and that that was a fun deal because you're i mean
38:26you're riding out there and you're looking around for ducks not not big ducks they're the rubber the
38:31rubber ducks that the jeep people like to duck each other with but yeah you just collect a bunch
38:36of ducks and win prizes yes yes and so that that's always fun so when so when is the t
38:44bar when is t bar
38:45s t bar s is september i'm not sure exactly of the date because we had to cancel that one
38:52it was going
38:52to be memorial day weekend and we moved it i want to say it's around the 17th uh but again
38:57those dates
38:58are on our website um and that website is kept up to date with our calendars okay so yes and

39:05your reservation come join us i've got i've got to so we won the at the fundraiser that you were
39:11talking about the grasslands we won the camping thing for t bar s oh and see we were supposed to

39:17were supposed to have gone to over there for the memorial thing and then everything got rained out and
39:24so we had to cancel yes so we're thankful for the rain but yes it makes it tough oh yes

40:50them see some things and do you know stuff and haul them and all that they get to get hauled

40:55get to go ride in new places and you know riding out on the trails of what they do is

41:02for the young horses because it helps them learn learn to keep their feet under them because if you're
41:08riding a horse in an arena all the time and all you do is ride in an arena riding circles
41:10or going
41:11around an arena all the time they never experience anything uh difficult or challenging so you get a
41:17horse you ride in the arena all the time and then you have to go outside and do something in
41:20the
41:20field your horse gonna freak out because it doesn't know what to do it's used to riding on level ground
41:25well get them off the level ground get them outside and ride them on the trail so go with
41:30backcountry horsemen and go ride with them guys it's it's a lot of fun it's a lot of fun they're
41:35they're
41:35a fun group they're a fun group they have a potluck you know you cook up some stuff and eat
41:40and drink
41:41and be merry over there so check it out uh speaking of checking out where i've been jefferson texas so
41:49i was uh down in jefferson texas for it's called the battle battle for jefferson and it's not a real
41:59battle i mean it's a real battle this battle did not happen but it's what it would have looked like
42:05if there was a battle in jefferson so that's what kind of threw me off so uh i was able
42:12to go down
42:12there and uh take my camera i don't get to take pictures too much anymore because i got all these
42:16photographers but i was able to actually take my camera and do a little photography work out there
42:20and uh shoot some of this uh battle scene so let's check this out so uh you got the uh
42:27confederates
42:27and the uh union getting ready to bat they're battling out over there um there was a cannon that shot
42:35a smoke ring and that's the craziest thing i've ever seen some people do it with cigarettes and
42:40smoking cigarettes and thought of smoke rings but this cannon was shot some smoke rings so i was able
42:45to get some of that and then i mostly just watched the uh yeah that's the smoke ring come out
42:49of a
42:49cannon the cannon shot all the way across the field and it made a huge smoke ring and that was
42:55the craziest thing i ever seen then i just pretty much focused on the horses watching the horses shoot
43:00and the guys uh the guys shooting as they're riding and firing off and loading on their horses
43:06and stuff was pretty good because it when i was on 1883 and i worked on the uh the battle
43:13scenes for
43:131883 and i was a confederate soldier shooting the the union as they ran down the hill and that was
43:22that
43:22was pretty interesting it was neat to see it in live action but kind of reminded me of that
43:27a little bit but just just watching those guys and they they played the parts i did feel bad for
43:32one of the guys though that he got shot and the stretcher crew ran out there to get him and
43:40they
43:40picked him up on the stretcher and they're running back and they all fail and he fell off the stretcher
43:44on his head i was like man he just died twice but uh yeah it's a fun thing it's fun

43:51texas is always fun it's a great tourist spot to go they always have events going on all the time
43:55we'll probably be out there again uh for mardi gras we'll be out there for mardi gras uh we'll
44:02probably go to the battle again after the battle they had a square dance i've never been to a square
44:06dance i don't even know what that means but i was there and we watched it for a little while
44:11was like oh this is not too bad so we tried it it was it was a fun deal so
44:15i mean it was all around
44:16good time there in jefferson and uh if you want to go to jefferson go to the captain's historic
44:24google historic captain's castle that's where you want to go and uh go see my buddy mike jones
44:32who mike jones they own that place and i will be out there with them guys they also have parlor

44:39at their captain's castle which i believe is the only license alcohol licensed bed and breakfast
44:46there in jefferson so you don't have to go down to to annie skinner's or haywood haywood's to get a
44:52drink you can just get a drink right there in your uh in your airbnb so check them out they

44:57place i think last last year year four a couple years ago something like that anyway um they've been
45:02working on it and doing some upgrades and stuff and it's it's pretty nice pretty nice looking place we
45:06were out there for halloween last year they had a halloween deal at their place so check it out
45:10historic captain's castle is what you want to find and check that out um east texas stock horse has a
45:17huge event coming up the 11th through the 14th you're going to want to check that out uh we're also
45:24going
45:24to have my ranch hand challenge on that saturday i think like five o'clock and uh it's going to
45:30be a
45:31horse show it's going to be it's an ncr n-r-c-h-a affiliated show it's a big cow
45:37horse classic
45:38the derby and bridle spectacular i don't know where they come from those names and then i got my ranch
45:45hand challenge that day if you've never competed in the ranch hand challenge it's fun use a breakaway
45:49rope you don't have one i'll bring some for you if you don't want to enter the jackpot in the
45:53ranch
45:53hand challenge i am going to open it up after the jackpot for people that want to try it so

46:19you get to do some some real cow stuff you don't you want to know what it's like to do

46:25work well you're about to when you do that so that's going to be fun uh we have jefferson
46:29in east texas we did out ride the devil and uh i guess i got one more story that i'm
46:34going to leave
46:35you with and did you know about all the cowboy movies that were made in texas back in the early
46:431900s they left new york because it didn't look rural enough so they went down south i think around san
46:50antonio made a bunch of short films for the westerns and uh check it out if you're a movie
46:59fan this might surprise you some of the first cowboy movies ever made were filmed just about
47:0470 miles from austin in san antonio and the hill country more than a century ago and a few
47:10still survive today kvu's bob buckalew has that story
47:17you're seeing a fascinating piece of movie history one of several action movies about the old west that
47:23were produced not in hollywood but in and around san antonio star film ranch would crank out as many as
47:31three 15 minute movies a week back in 1911 these were some of the earliest cowboy movies made and
47:37audiences back then loved them we owe the existence of these early cowboy movies to a french film
47:44producer in new york city gaston meliez since western shot in new york weren't very convincing
47:49and hard to shoot in winter meliez headed south to texas the star film ranch was based south of san
47:56antonio city down along the mission trail the films capture the central texas landscape so well the
48:04rolling hills of the hill country the wide open spaces katherine fuller seeley is a ut austin media
48:11studies professor and has co-written a book about the star ranch movies it's landscape it's the delightful
48:18cowboys it's the action and it's the fabulous performances of the lead cowgirl and lead cowboy
48:25that gaston had hired the star ranch films created some early movie stars there was francis ford whose
48:32younger brother john ford became a legendary hollywood film director and edith story she was
48:39only 17 um new york city born and raised but quite a tom girl she's she's a delightful comedian also
48:46very
48:47good in dramatic films and she's just got an excellent way with the camera and she's a horse woman like
48:53you
48:54wouldn't believe only four of the star ranch movies have been found film historians like fuller seeley hope
49:00there are more still out there it's great fun it's all 110 115 years ago but they sometimes the
49:07films look as fresh as if they were shot yesterday an important piece of early movie history from right
