A dramatic aviation standoff unfolded in Yemen after an Iranian Mahan Air Airbus A340 flight reportedly diverted from Sana’a and landed at Hodeidah Airport, a city controlled by the Houthi movement.
The flight, which took place on July 13, 2026, was reportedly unable to land at Sana’a International Airport after restrictions were imposed and the runway was damaged. The aircraft then changed course and successfully reached Hodeidah, where footage later showed the jet taking off from the Red Sea port city.
Iran and the Houthis have portrayed the flight as a major breakthrough against Saudi-backed restrictions, while Yemen’s internationally recognized government and Saudi Arabia have viewed the move as a provocation.
The incident comes amid rising tensions in Yemen and the wider Middle East, followed by Houthi missile and drone activity targeting Saudi Arabia’s Abha Airport.
