00:35The South African players are making their way to the middle here.
00:39They still have one Australian wicket to take, 341 the score put on the board,
00:43and an exciting first day's play here at the WACA yesterday.
00:47An awful lot hinging on this second day's play.
00:49We've just heard Tony Gregg and Michael Slater reckon this could be a defining day of the series.
00:55We'll go up to the commentary box now, where Ian Chappell and Mark Taylor are in their seats.
01:01Bill Laurie's with them.
01:02Thank you, Mark Nicklaus. Good morning to all our viewers.
01:05Another perfect day here in Perth.
01:09Tony Gregg's got it right. This is the big day.
01:11Of course, I'm happy if they clean up the tail.
01:14The Razor's played well for 19.
01:17Pretty silly to get to face the ball.
01:19So, 9 for 341.
01:3089 overs bowled, 9 for 341, and when you look at that scorecard, a lot of starts.
01:36Just one good score, 83 from Simon Caddys.
01:38He was the star yesterday with the bat, and I thought Harris was probably the star with the ball to
01:42bowl.
01:4321 overs, 2 for 70, and just conceded three runs per over.
01:46It was a very good day for Spinner on the first day here at the WACA.
01:50Well, it was a terrific day of Test match cricket, wasn't it?
01:52It was plenty of hype, build up to this game.
01:56Quite often, with all that build up, the play doesn't quite live up to all the expectations.
02:00But we can honestly say it did yesterday.
02:03It was a great day of Test cricket.
02:04It started off with South Africa bowling well.
02:06Australia 3 for 15, potting out for a first ball duck.
02:10And I suppose everyone watching would have feared the worst for Australia.
02:13But they fought back so well with Clark and Caddysh.
02:17And then Simons and Haddon down lower order.
02:19It was a terrific day.
02:20It was a weird-looking scorecard.
02:22You expect a couple of noughts here in Perth, but no hundreds.
02:24But it was just that sort of day yesterday.
02:26Terrific entertainment.
02:28Yeah, and Australia can thank Simon Caddysh for their position of strength today.
02:33I thought that's the best innings I've seen from him in Test cricket.
02:38Jason Crazier has shown a bit of batting ability.
02:41Certainly is a younger player in underage cricket.
02:44He had plenty of batting ability.
02:47He's currently on 19.
02:49He'll be facing Dale Steyn.
02:55That's a good pitch.
02:56He's seen the batsman play forward with plenty of confidence.
03:01Steyn, I thought it was disappointing yesterday.
03:03Didn't get one ball offline.
03:04He was sharp enough, but he didn't swing the ball at all.
03:07He had 18 overs, 2 for 71.
03:13Yeah, I agree with you, Billy.
03:14He just didn't look comfortable at any stage.
03:16I don't think he could quite find which was the right end for him to bowl from.
03:20He's again bowling from the Prindival stand end.
03:23The wind's different today, though, at the moment.
03:28He bowled from that end yesterday, trying to use what was the free-mantle-blocked interest.
03:32It should have helped him swing the ball away.
03:34He had trouble swinging the ball away.
03:37Today, the breeze is the other way at the moment.
03:39It's coming from the northeast of the ground.
03:41So it will slightly be behind him, but it certainly won't help his outswing.
03:53That's a good shot.
03:56Beautifully fired up his toes.
04:01That's four.
04:02Valuable runs.
04:08I think he went for the orc, but he was too straight.
04:11He worked that beautifully, Peter Siddle.
04:13Big moment for the young lad.
04:16Nicely played.
04:27Nicely played again.
04:29He should get three.
04:36He's up to 3.50.
04:37That's a good score in any test match.
04:39First innings.
04:40Anything between 3.50 and 4.00.
04:42It's a good start with the series.
04:49This runs.
04:51Four runs.
04:52But I will tell his rag in the crowd love it.
04:54I like to see the 10 and 11 scoring runs.
04:57Frustration for the bowling.
05:0020-run partnership.
05:02Just 32 deliveries.
05:04Yeah, and Peter Siddle's got 15 of them as well.
05:07He's enjoying it at the moment.
05:10Once again, the wrong line for a bowler.
05:12Siddle worked it nicely.
05:14That's what I like about Peter Siddle.
05:16Generally, the lower order batsmen tend to be getting quite far enough across
05:20to playing the quick event.
05:22Shot's like that last one.
05:24Out of the repertoire.
05:25Siddle got nicely inside the line of that last ball.
05:27Tucked it away for four.
05:32Good early call.
05:34I'm almost got a fire up there.
05:36He's got to be very full or very short, I think,
05:38in trying to shake him up or do something.
05:40Because he's just drifting along.
05:45Oh, that's nicely played as well.
05:47Running down the ground towards the mid-off boundary.
05:51McKenzie will probably just get what he did there.
05:53No, he won't.
05:54All the way for four.
05:55Lovely straight drive.
05:57So, Siddle.
05:59Onto the front foot and into the 20s.
06:05That's a nick.
06:06Yes, that's out, caught behind.
06:07A much better length.
06:08A much better line.
06:10Well, it's taken Ntini to come back in here.
06:13Use his experience to finish off this inning.
06:16So, Ntini ends up with four wickets.
06:19For 72.
06:22And, well, Siddle, the man out.
06:25Caught behind for 23.
06:27He's been the one bowler this morning to stick to a plan.
06:30Have a plan.
06:31They all would have had a plan, but he's stuck with it.
06:33Pressure outside of Stump.
06:34Trying to get the length up there.
06:36Very much like Ricky Ponting was dismissed yesterday
06:38by the same bowler.
06:40Jason Crazier.
06:4330.
06:44Peter Siddle out for 23.
06:46Brilliant partnership with 34.
06:48Just to frustrate the South Africans.
06:50Before they have to come out and face the fire of Australia.
06:54So, we were just talking about Graham Smith.
06:56He would now be very focused on his batting
06:59because this is going to be a very interesting passage of play.
07:02Once the South Africans get out there to see what the Aussie fast bowlers can do,
07:06see how tough the South African batting line-up is,
07:09that's what the Australians did.
07:11There'd be a few of them pretty disappointed with the fact
07:14that they didn't kick on and make 100.
07:15A few guys there.
07:16Kattich getting to 83.
07:18Michael Clark, 62.
07:19Simons also played an ordinary shot for 57.
07:23All had an opportunity to get themselves a century.
07:27So, 375 all out.
07:31No doubt that they'll be right after them, right from the word go.
07:35Having posted a good score of 375.
07:38Good fight back by the Australians.
07:41They'll now be trying to take advantage of the situation with the ball.
07:47It's going to be interesting.
07:48The other interesting aspect here will be to see exactly who bowls with the wind,
07:51who bowls into the wind.
07:52Exactly what Ricky Ponting has up his sleeve as far as these fastmen are concerned.
07:58Just looking at the flags over there, it doesn't seem to be too much of a breeze at the moment.
08:03So, nothing much to write home about in terms of getting any support from the wind.
08:09But we're going to start with Brett Lee.
08:14If anything, he's taking it into the breeze.
08:16That breeze is blowing from top right to the bottom left of screen.
08:19Brett Lee's going to take it in.
08:21Not a great impact of being into a slight breeze, but it should help his away swing.
08:26Dave Smith, what about when he was walking out the bat?
08:28He was looking at the Australians, whether there's something going on already.
08:31He was having a great look at them.
08:33Leave their huddle.
08:34He then had a look around the sky.
08:35He's trying to get himself perfect for this innings.
08:38He needs a big one.
08:39South Africa need him to have a big one.
08:41This guy will knock it around for him and get down the other end and let a few balls go.
08:45But, gee, they're very dependent on Smith getting away like he never has done before against Australia.
08:53Settle down.
08:54He's nice and relaxed.
08:55That's what you're talking about.
08:56Come on, Greggy, fire up.
08:57Making Graeme Smith sound as if he's done this millions of times.
09:01He hasn't done it very well, let me tell you.
09:03He's averaging about 24 against Australia.
09:05Let's see how he goes here.
09:08I think you're trying to cover up.
09:10You're a bit nervous yourself.
09:11But a batting average of over 50.
09:15I'm hearing it.
09:16I'm hearing it.
09:16But what's he feeling?
09:17What is he feeling?
09:19Is he trying to compose himself or is he composed?
09:22Well, we'll find out.
09:24Brett Lee, bang on target right away.
09:27Nice and straight.
09:28Not much swing there, but we haven't seen much swing throughout this test match, so I'm not expecting to see
09:34too much.
09:35Brett Lee will be concentrating to keep the ball up.
09:39That breeze we were talking about, it was very, very strong this morning when we arrived at the ground.
09:44It's settled down now.
09:45It's just a faint breeze and it will swing around a bit later with the Fremantle Docter so that the
09:52end from which Lee's bowling at the moment will be the one where the bowler will have the wind at
09:58his back.
09:58At the moment, it's very, very still.
10:05It's nice and straight as well.
10:07So straight away, Brett Lee trying for that outswinger, getting it up and nice and straight.
10:12McKenzie playing nice and straight as well.
10:19Oh, outside edge will fall short.
10:21If you watch a couple sail over your head, all of a sudden the bouncer is no more of a
10:26worry.
10:27No wicket for five.
10:34A little bit of a concern when that first happens.
10:36That will run away for four.
10:38Very fine.
10:40It's a leg by but four valuable runs.
10:43It's an interesting technique that Smith possesses.
10:47He's very closed face.
10:49By that, I mean, he's in his stance and when he's playing a lot of his shots down the ground,
10:55he'll often drag to the onside because the pace of the bat is very closed.
11:02And he has that ability to knock the ball very fine as well.
11:11Oh, it's straight up in the air.
11:13It'll go.
11:14Peter Sittle is taking a very easy catch.
11:17It was crazy.
11:18Actually, gets underneath it and it's an awful shot from McKenzie.
11:25They've been very accurate.
11:26The Aussie bowl is building up the pressure.
11:29McKenzie himself not willing to play too many strokes but he's picked the wrong time to come
11:34up with a badly timed pull shot.
11:37Well, as he's walking off, he's practising the cut shot.
11:40I think saying to himself, I should have been cutting it, not pulling it.
11:44Big breakthrough there for Mitchell Johnson.
11:47It's one for 16.
11:56Australia finally the breakthrough and Hashim Amler, who has had a terrific 2008.
12:03He's a vastly improved batsman.
12:06He's now got that average of over 40.
12:15That's well played and well fielded.
12:17Beautifully fielded.
12:19Is that all right, Bill?
12:20Yeah, that's all right.
12:21And also, that done well on the field, the Australians.
12:24At the time it's Cadditch.
12:26We've seen Simons cut off one or two and it makes a big difference.
12:29You back up your ball.
12:30This is a good shot.
12:31Right off the meat of the bat.
12:32But very good save at forward square leg.
12:35Good cricket by Cadditch.
12:43It's well bowled and well fielded and well played too.
12:47Some good cricket.
12:49Andrew Simons again.
12:51One for 22.
12:5518 minutes to go.
12:5619 minutes to go before lunch.
12:59Getting two or three overs in from this end.
13:03Good start.
13:04It's a beautiful start.
13:06It's a nice loop there.
13:07A little bit of start, a little bit of lift in.
13:09Right from the word go.
13:09I like him.
13:10He puts a bit of work on the ball.
13:12We first saw him bowled in 2006 out at Dremoyne Oval when we watched an exciting game between
13:20Western Australia and New South Wales one day up.
13:25The thing that impressed me with him that day, he bowled just nine overs, but he drifted the
13:33ball away from the right handers and then spun it back.
13:36Now there might not be as much turn for him out there at Dremoyne Oval as there was at Dremoyne
13:42Oval, but he impressed us on that day.
13:46Goal!
13:47Oh, and just closing the face on that one.
13:51I reckon he's got to get another man in close on the offside.
13:55Pressure, pressure, pressure.
13:56He can keep the man in a short extra cover as well if he wants.
14:01He didn't really go with any confidence, did he?
14:03He tried to work it on the onside, close in the face.
14:06It was half a pace short.
14:08It was well bowled.
14:09Nice fight.
14:14Goal!
14:16Not out from the umpire there.
14:18It's been enough, I don't think.
14:21That's why when you play that shot, when you go pat and bat, that's why the man on the offside,
14:27silly point, is useful as well.
14:29So, a little discussion now between Ponting.
14:32Perhaps he's going to change it and get somebody in there.
14:34Let's see.
14:34Let's see where this pitch is.
14:40Tell you what, pretty close.
14:42Probably saved by the fact that he went forward quite a long way.
14:46Right, so this is a much better field now.
15:03Definitely a little bit of drift there.
15:05The spinners just love it.
15:07Yes, I think we should look at that LBW again.
15:10Couldn't be any closer than that, not be given out.
15:12Middle is a fraction forward, but there's a pitching line yet.
15:15Notice this is straight enough.
15:17Yes, it did.
15:18Maybe the bounce.
15:19It was half a pace forward of the popping crease.
15:24Probably a good decision.
15:32So that's why they should have had a silly point in there.
15:35As it's turned out, there wasn't one there, and I suspect the bales will come off now,
15:39and we shall go in for the lunch break.
15:43So there we are.
15:45The South Africans have taken their score to 1 for 27.
15:48McKenzie, the man out, caught by Kraser with the bowling of Johnson,
15:51trying to play a pull shot.
15:52He was out for 2.
15:54And South Africa are now 348 behind, so they've still got a long way to go.
16:05Oh, how did that miss?
16:08It's a slower ball, looped much more than Amler expected.
16:13Got under the blade, possibly outside the blade, and missed the off-stamp.
16:21It's hard to work out how he missed it, because Amler seemed to pick up the change of pace.
16:26Just played inside it.
16:31Swung.
16:32It's late.
16:34He seemed to swing.
16:34Missed the bat.
16:35Missed everything.
16:41That's a good shot.
16:42Siddle was teased into that.
16:44Smith didn't want anything to do.
16:46It's balls pitched outside off.
16:48He straightens it up, and Smith pounces.
16:511 for 44.
17:00Tender at the moment, but he'll take that 4.
17:02Brettley, a good over, comes to an end with an unfortunate boundary.
17:1028 minutes, 22 runs, no wickets.
17:13It's been really tight stuff.
17:14Yesterday was like roller derby, demolition derby, where the batsmen were having a crack.
17:19The bowlers were trying lots of different things today, much more control with the ball and with the bat.
17:25Fielders are holding the tension okay.
17:27Something might break.
17:29Something might break.
17:29Siddle.
17:30Whipped.
17:33It might go for 4 if Brett Lee can't track it down.
17:38And it's 4.
17:42The intent's good from Hashin Amla.
17:45He does look good.
17:46Talked about his back foot play.
17:49He looks most comfortable on the back foot, but he's also looking for things that are thrown up there.
17:54That one's angled in to about middle.
17:56He's ripped it away through square leg.
17:58So his intent is good.
18:00He's looking to score.
18:11That's for Brett Lee now, just the two slips of gully, a point, cover and a mid off.
18:17Oh, great shot.
18:18That's the shot of the inning so far.
18:20Beautifully played off dry.
18:21Good afternoon, gentlemen.
18:22Good afternoon, Bill.
18:23Yeah, that's much better.
18:24That actually swung in a little bit too.
18:27Might have been just a little bit of a reverse swing there, but it was a lovely strike.
18:31Met it with the face of the bat.
18:33Yeah, swung in towards the shiny side, so just a little bit of reverse swing.
18:38And all the way to the band before.
18:39Look at the eyes.
18:41Nice and level and right off the middle of the bat.
18:54He's averaging 40, only had 32 matches.
18:58Now Kalis has got a magnificent record.
19:01Oh, he gets it away.
19:03It was rusty.
19:04A little bit of luck, but it could go for four.
19:07He whipped it away.
19:10Bit of Tendulkar there.
19:11Yeah, or Mohamed Azradin, the way he flicked away using the bottom hand.
19:16If it was in the air, you're quite right, but wider the fieldsman.
19:21So, another four.
19:22Just have a look at his wrists here.
19:24Whoo!
19:24Look at that.
19:27Whoa!
19:28That's a real whip.
19:34Whoa!
19:36That's a good shot.
19:39That'll find the rope.
19:40It's a good shot for a left hand to a right arm off spin up.
19:44Get the front cut out.
19:45Front sweep hard as Matthew Hayden's done.
19:50Good shot.
19:50Successfully for a long time.
19:52Good shot.
20:01Good shot.
20:02Long hop.
20:04Four.
20:05Superbly play.
20:08Gee, I like what I'm seeing with this guy.
20:10Just his whole attitude to batting.
20:13And he's got his own technique, but he wants to score runs.
20:16This, he's not going to spend any time adjusting to the different angle from the left arm.
20:21There's a real mindset when you've got a change of bowling, and you've gone from facing right arm over to
20:26left arm over.
20:27With the angle change, it's probably best to give yourself a bit of a cider, but that was there for
20:31the taking.
20:32Bang!
20:33It's gone.
20:34It's Neil McKenzie looking at that shot.
20:37It was the ideal square cut to a ball that was wide going across the body.
20:42He's on 40.
20:45Nicely played.
20:47At least two.
20:48Should be three if they run hard.
20:54Simons.
20:55Another look at this.
20:57Michael Clark's been away for an x-ray.
20:59He's coming back to the ground.
21:02I'm not sure of the result yet.
21:03There he is with his x-ray in hand.
21:06Yeah, apparently he hasn't got the results of that x-ray.
21:09Probably got a doctor having a look at it at the moment.
21:11He's obviously back to the ground with the x-ray.
21:18He doesn't put it away.
21:20Just a single.
21:23Well, good news coming through for Michael Clark.
21:25Dr Healey left the commentary box, went down and had a look at the scans.
21:28And he's confirmed to the commentary box that no fracture to Michael Clark.
21:34He'll be back out in the paddock very shortly.
21:36So that's great news for him and the Australian team.
21:38They didn't want to be finding a replacement batsman at this stage.
21:41But yeah, so terrific news there.
21:44Yeah, that's the last thing you need is to have an x-ray and find out that you've got a
21:48broken thumb and you're out of the game for a while.
21:54Good shot.
21:55It's too short.
21:58Good roll before Hussie.
21:59Diving, diving.
22:01For us.
22:02By the rift of the run, mate.
22:03This is a very good partnership.
22:06Started the score freely.
22:08All bowlers.
22:10Smith's trying, finding some rhythm.
22:12He's moved to 40 now.
22:15Yeah, this is what happens.
22:18You get a bit of a partnership going.
22:20They've put on 79 now of 118 deliveries and the run rate's improving.
22:243.47.
22:32Once again, we're seeing that batting at the wacker, once you're in and you start scoring, it's very hard to
22:38pull batsmen back.
22:40Everything you half hit runs away for four.
22:42And surprisingly now, Smith, this is his highest score in Australia.
22:46Last time around, you've got plenty of starts, a lot of 30s.
22:4839 in this CG was his previous highest.
22:53So he's taking on new ground in Australia.
22:59And you'll want to make the most of it.
23:01Also shows this little margin for error if you have a finger spinner on this ground.
23:05If you do drop short, the ball bounces enough to cut or pull.
23:13There he does pull, and he gets four.
23:16That's why Shane Moore was so good here.
23:17It wasn't Shane Moore's best ground, but he's still tight.
23:21It's very hard to be tight and wish at the top of the wazza as far as the spin roll
23:24is concerned here.
23:25If he drops short, he can pull, cut.
23:28Smith did well.
23:29Top of the what?
23:31Top of the wazza.
23:32Number one.
23:49There we are.
23:50That's the oval, that little green dot, alongside the Swan River.
23:54And that's the partnership for Wagon Wheel between Smith and Amla.
24:01It's one for 100.
24:04If you're seeing Amla for the first time, he's worth paying your money to see.
24:08It's to be a very good number three.
24:12Sweet timer of the ball.
24:15So a little bit of pressure now on the Australians, chasing 375 with nine wickets in hand.
24:29Playing nicely from the crease, gets back behind the front line when it's short.
24:33And very quick to get forward as well.
24:37So this partnership now beginning to develop nicely.
24:4084 they've put on.
24:41It's been a fighting partnership.
24:42Slow at the beginning, and slowly it's gaining momentum.
24:47There's always something in the pitch.
24:48There's...
24:49With the effort, if the ball was putting in, the one might just bounce a little bit more,
24:53kiss the deck a little bit quicker.
24:57Surprised the batsman.
24:58But generally now, it's a case of it'll be batsman error.
25:01Trying to score too quickly.
25:04Smith is concentrating hard.
25:06This is the start they wanted.
25:11That's a great shot.
25:13That goes for four.
25:15So it's one for 104.
25:27269 the difference between the sides with Jason Grazier in operation.
25:31Down at the Prinderville stand end of the ground.
25:34Yeah!
25:35Brilliant that break.
25:37A gem.
25:39First wicket in Australia for Jason Grazier with the almost perfect delivery.
25:48Well he's a wonderful flight bowler.
25:50That's what got him so much success in India.
25:53Beating batsman through the air.
25:54There's absolutely no doubt that he beats Amla through the air there.
26:00Does put plenty of spin on it and he's got it to turn a long way.
26:03Beautiful delivery.
26:06No wonder he's thrilled about it.
26:08South Africa.
26:09Two for 106.
26:14Wonderful panoramic view of the WACA with Jacques Cullis arriving at Greece for the first time in the series.
26:21Of course.
26:22Clearly by his standards has had an ordinary year but has a fabulous record in test match cricket.
26:299,800 runs with an average of 55.
26:34That is right up there with the very, very best.
26:41Oh dear me.
26:47Tell you what, there's a lot of people here that thought that was that.
26:51What a fabulous over from Jason Grazier.
26:54It's two for 109.
27:05Oh yes, now Mitchell Johnson strikes.
27:08That is the double whammy.
27:12Huge, huge for Australia.
27:15Desperate for South Africa.
27:17Graham Smith gone, played on.
27:22Well I'll be getting sick of hearing the death rattle.
27:24South Africans at the moment.
27:26Twice in two overs.
27:28First one was a clean strike of the stumps.
27:30That one off the inside edge.
27:33But both of them pretty important for Australia.
27:36Three for 110.
27:44Well we once again got a completely changed situation.
27:47Honestly from the ball one from the first half an hour yesterday.
27:51This game has fluctuated at pace.
27:56We thought that South Africa had it a moment ago.
27:58With Hamler and Smith going nicely.
28:01Now they're both back in the hutch.
28:03Cullis is at the wicket.
28:05And he's had a very sticky time with it.
28:06The six balls he's faced.
28:09A.B. de Villiers is the man taking guard.
28:12Australia has its tail up with three slips in a gully.
28:16And he's in.
28:17Waiting for Mitchell Johnson.
28:18Who's bowling with terrific pace and strength.
28:22And slips the slow ball in first.
28:33I don't like it from the time of view that Jack Cullis is so good to Silva's with him, thank
28:39heaven, as far as Cullis is concerned.
28:44A very fraught little start to Cullis's innings.
28:55A forearm probably, not wrist, and a good decision from Ahsoka da Silva.
29:05Well he's tantalising Cullis, here again you get that example of a guy, he's not prepared to leave his crease,
29:11very good decision from Ahsoka da Silva hitting on the forearm.
29:16And Cullis is forcing Cullis to do some extraordinary things at the moment.
29:23One of the reasons is that beautiful line, outside off stump, that's getting the bat away from the body.
29:30It's 3 for 110.
29:38Nice, really nice, just got into position.
29:42Let the ball come to him really, that's a super way to get off the mark for A.B. de
29:46Villiers.
29:48It's 3 for 140.
29:53375 for Australia, bowled out this morning, Peter Siddle was the last man to go.
29:57South Africa now 3 for 117 in reply.
30:01Oh, that's right through him.
30:03Cullis, almost onto the crease.
30:05I was going to say, Michael Stater, about Jacques Cullis.
30:08Average is 55, but never been seen as a dominating batsman, has he?
30:13He's more of an accumulator of runs.
30:15He bats for a long time, he's got very good concentration.
30:18It doesn't tend to really hurt you as a batsman.
30:21He doesn't score very quickly.
30:29Well, that's well hit.
30:32Crazier annoyed with himself.
30:34Too full.
30:37Gave Cullis the chance to play the big shot and he did.
30:40Played it nice and straight too.
30:42He got onto it quick.
30:44Saw it up, he'd seen that plenty of times before, but he also saw that it wasn't going to bounce.
30:53That's a good shot.
30:54Well placed from Cullis.
30:56Nice use of the crease.
30:59Fractionally short from Crazier.
31:03Cullis was onto it with a flash.
31:05Yeah, he's so good at opening himself up.
31:07He picked the length immediately.
31:09He backs off it and that opened up the gap for him in the offside.
31:13Gee, we've got a last session on our hands, haven't we?
31:15Prime time test cricket coming your way in that final session.
31:19South Africa looking to get a partnership going.
31:22Still behind by 244 runs.
31:33No, he goes down the pitch.
31:36Takes him over the onside.
31:38And that's a biggie.
31:40That's a big boundary up there.
31:42Beautifully struck from the Villiers.
31:46Yeah, he was shaping up to favour the onside.
31:49He just had a little bit of a look-see for a couple of deliveries.
31:54Quick skip, he got a straighter delivery.
31:56And he just came across.
31:58It was nice use of the feet as he got across to the off-stump.
32:02And it allowed him to hit it with confidence to the onside.
32:10So he's making that ball look very straight.
32:12Bowling almost at the pads of the batsman.
32:14But it's way outside off-stump.
32:16It's way outside.
32:17So he's got Crazier fooled here and a little confused.
32:20Does he pitch it even wider of off-stump and get it right out there?
32:24In the hope of having him play through the covers?
32:26Or does he do what Paul Harris did yesterday at Andrew Simons?
32:29Pitch it outside leg for once.
32:35Trouble at the moment, Jason Crazier.
32:38That length is staying to worry him.
32:40Ten from that over three for 144.
32:51Shot.
32:52That's four.
32:53Maybe slowed down by the seagull on that occasion.
32:56Still a big chase.
32:57That's four runs.
32:59Well played.
32:59Short and wide.
33:07Yeah, that's the way to look at it.
33:09Straight through cover.
33:12He'll be enjoying this jar of colors.
33:14He probably thought it might have been Crazier.
33:16Or maybe Brett Glee up against the breeze for some reverse swing.
33:19And he gets the medium pace of Andrew Simons.
33:22Yeah, well give me an over or two, will you?
33:24I'm not expecting Callis to be complacent first ball.
33:28It was a poor ball by Simons.
33:30Floated up nicely right into the slot.
33:32And Callis found the gap down breeze.
33:35He's got to be tight and economical for a little period of time
33:39before that mistake would come.
33:43There he goes again.
33:45This is a guy that put the finger on Jack Callis.
33:47They've said he's been out of form.
33:48He's been struggling.
33:49Well he's got a tremendous record.
33:51And he's a stroke player.
33:53And today he's come out and he's striking well.
34:02Master Crest is forward.
34:03He's offered a shot.
34:05Just outside the line.
34:09Yeah, very, very optimistic that guy.
34:14He's been on the spot.
34:17He hasn't wasted anything so far.
34:21And de Villiers gets his footwork right.
34:24He gets organised.
34:25We've just been mentioning he's been working hard to get it right.
34:28And he gets it right on the ball he needed to.
34:30He got his front foot out there.
34:32And outside the line of off.
34:35Great.
34:42There'll be no stopping that.
34:47Not unless you're in the crowd.
34:51Strong blow from Jack Callis.
34:54Takes us to the drinks break in the final session of play here at Perth.
34:58South Africa.
34:59Three for 204.
35:02Clips a gully.
35:03You've got a point.
35:04Just pushing back a little deeper.
35:06That's Michael Clarke.
35:07And your sign is in the covers.
35:09Patrolling that there'll always be runs there.
35:12A little bit tight on the hip.
35:14And, uh,
35:15A.B. de Villiers.
35:17Bringing up a half century at the Wacker.
35:20He did it three years ago at this same venue as well.
35:24In your 60-odd.
35:26And he's looked in control.
35:33Oh, he's really forced that nicely off the back foot.
35:36This will be the two runs for the half century.
35:38Jack Callis will salute his team mates.
35:42Into the crowd here at the Wacker for day two.
35:46Nicely compiled.
35:47Ninety-six deliveries and another half century in Test cricket.
35:50Three for 210.
36:01It's a full toss and smash through the offside.
36:04Well, that's what he needed.
36:05He needed to get one away nicely.
36:07And, uh, Callis has done that.
36:08He's dispatched that one to the extra cover boundary.
36:11Yes, good shot.
36:18Good one.
36:19What's that done?
36:20That's got the wicket.
36:22Unbelievable.
36:23Mitchell Johnson strikes.
36:28He really is a competitor.
36:33And what a good catch.
36:35Talking about classic catches.
36:36He's been out there all day, Brad Haddon.
36:38He can cut his fingers across it.
36:40Maybe just a bit of bounce.
36:43And well caught.
36:44Yeah, I think there's a bit of cut on that one.
36:46He does it.
36:46He keeps doing it.
36:47He gets the ball in his hand.
36:49And, uh, he takes a wicket.
36:51Golden arm.
36:53Mitchell Johnson.
36:54Pour down for 234.
37:03That's out.
37:04Yes, he's got him as well.
37:05This is great bowling.
37:08His ability to get that ball just to move away a little bit.
37:11And he sucks the batsman in.
37:14First it was de Villiers.
37:15Now it's Callis.
37:17And boy, that does make a difference.
37:19That is the big wicket.
37:21It's yesterday all over again.
37:23Getting to the 60s.
37:24It's well bowled.
37:27It's a long line really.
37:28He played well away from his body.
37:30Well caught again.
37:31That's a good test match this one.
37:33Five for 237.
37:34Chasing.
37:36375.
37:36Anybody's game.
37:50Oh, that's good bowling.
37:51And that could be out.
37:53Oh, yes.
37:53He's giving him out.
37:55Well, that's five for Johnson.
37:59Well, the batsman's walking off.
38:01And, uh, it's one of those.
38:03It looked to me as if it might well have been Glove.
38:05But, uh, there's a possibility it could have been Arm as well.
38:08The umpire took his time there.
38:09I've got to say that, uh, there's no doubt that Dumini swung around and looked at the umpire
38:15to see what his reaction was.
38:16Understandable.
38:17Let's see if we can pick it up.
38:18Here it is.
38:21Oh, it looks like Glove.
38:24He looks around.
38:28Yeah, he didn't seem all that happy about it.
38:31But, uh, he's taken it pretty well.
38:33It'll be interesting to see another angle on that one.
38:36So, South Africa now six down for 238.
38:38Dumini out for one.
38:45Oh, it's a good ball.
38:46It's not easy when you're a tall man to evade those.
38:50He's played them pretty well.
38:51He's picked up five rickets today, Mitchell Johnson.
38:54Started with Neil McKenzie, opening batsman for South Africa.
38:58He won't like a look at that replay.
39:00That was well wide of off-stump.
39:02He spooned up a simple catch.
39:03Then the other opener.
39:04Graeme Smith.
39:05And then the big ones.
39:07In the middle order.
39:08And things looking good for South Africa.
39:09De Villiers.
39:10Then Callas.
39:12And then Dumini.
39:15Yeah, a bit lucky that fifth one.
39:17But I can see why it was given.
39:19Leading edge.
39:20Out.
39:21Got him.
39:21That six foot.
39:23That's a career best.
39:24For Mitchell Johnson.
39:26It was a slower ball.
39:27He socked him up.
39:28With a couple of short ones.
39:30And then gave him the old soccer ball.
39:32The slower ball.
39:33And Jason Crazier.
39:34To a good catch running in.
39:36Six rickets for Johnson.
39:38Just showing us he's got a brain to go with it.
39:41To go with LeBron.
39:42To go with the pace.
39:44Intimidation.
39:44He's a thinking bowler now as well.
39:47He slows it up.
39:48Big leading edge.
39:51Oh.
39:52How good's that?
39:53The Aussies are back now.
39:55Seven for.
39:55Seven for 2.41.
39:58It was almost as if Crazier was anticipating it.
40:01He was on the move.
40:03He was moving forward.
40:03Covered it beautifully.
40:04Even though he had plenty of distance to make.
40:07In Morkel.
40:07As Hubby said.
40:08Bouncer.
40:09Bouncer.
40:10Slower ball.
40:11What's that?
40:12At this stage of the night.
40:14He's being double bluffed.
40:16And dismissed.
40:20That's an outstanding piece of bowling.
40:22Mitchell Johnson.
40:24No one.
40:25Including the batsman.
40:26Was predicting that.
40:27We all thought.
40:28Plenty of short ones.
40:29And then.
40:30Something speared into the stumps.
40:32Big tall man.
40:33And we're all waiting for the big Yorker.
40:35Mitchell Johnson.
40:36Changed it up.
40:37Dragged his fingers across the scene.
40:39Slowed it up.
40:40That was only 125 k's.
40:43Morkel was through the shot.
40:44Way too early.
40:45Leading edge.
40:47Crazier did the rest.
40:48That's superb bowling.
40:50The Australians.
40:51As I said.
40:51Are now ramping.
40:52Seven for 2.41.
40:53South Africa.
40:54There's still 134 behind.
40:56There's the leading edge.
40:58Balloons.
40:59In the air.
41:00Just long enough.
41:01So Crazier can get to it.
41:06Everyone's got to take a breath.
41:08Unbelievable.
41:09The last three quarters.
41:11An hour to an hour.
41:12Now it's turned around.
41:13And now.
41:13Paul Harris.
41:15He's going to try and get through.
41:18The end of day two.
41:19He's not got long to go.
41:22But.
41:23I feel there could be another one.
41:24He's got long enough.
41:25That's right.
41:27Long enough to get out.
41:29Johnson's angle.
41:30The slips are packed.
41:31The pace is on.
41:32He's delivering it at 145 k's an hour.
41:37Oh.
41:38Oh.
41:39He's gone past the outside edge.
41:42What.
41:43It's gone from.
41:45About two hours without Australia.
41:46Looking like getting a wicket.
41:47To Mitchell Johnson looking like.
41:49Getting one every ball at the moment.
41:50And he's not.
41:51He's not happy to beat the bat.
41:53He's now asking.
41:54You want me to go around the wicket.
41:55Because then I can angle it into the stumps.
41:57Maybe swing it away a little bit.
41:59Angle in.
42:00Swing away.
42:00And clip off stump.
42:01Or clean him up.
42:05Yes.
42:06He's asked to go straight around the wicket.
42:07Normally he wouldn't like this idea.
42:09But.
42:09Mitchell Johnson knows.
42:10He's only got two deliveries left today.
42:12This is his final load.
42:14There'll be one more after this.
42:15So he's got two deliveries left.
42:17And Paul Harris here.
42:18To try and get him out.
42:19And he reckons his best chance is around the wicket.
42:22Spearing in towards the stumps.
42:27Oh.
42:27Well bowled.
42:28Got it right on the money too.
42:29Two.
42:32Now in the last 19 deliveries that Mitchell Johnson has bowled.
42:35He's taken four for two.
42:37Put Australia right on top in this game.
42:40Four for two.
42:43Unbelievable.
42:43He's got Harris going back.
42:46I wonder if the instructions were.
42:47Just stay back in the grease.
42:48Watch the ball close.
42:49Well what's this one?
42:50What's the last one going to be?
42:51What is it?
42:52I reckon it's got to be out the ribs.
42:56Quick Yorker.
42:57It has to be.
42:58We didn't guess the slow one.
42:59What will it be?
43:01He's flicked it.
43:02Goal!
43:03He's got him!
43:06So well.
43:07It's a ball on about leg stuff.
43:09Harris has flicked it around the corner of the man at Leggully.
43:12Johnson's got seven foot.
43:14He's picked up five for two in 20 balls.
43:16Oh Heels this is yours.
43:18You picked it.
43:18Picked it.
43:19Oh you can read their minds can't you these blokes.
43:22It was pacey.
43:23It was pacey.
43:24It wasn't the short ball.
43:25It didn't get up anyway.
43:26Trey to him.
43:28You beauty.
43:29Harris thinks.
43:30Oh you ripper.
43:31I'm off the mark here.
43:32I've got it right in the middle.
43:33Oh no.
43:33There's a man there.
43:35Oh.
43:35I'm gone.
43:36And it's Crazier again.
43:39He's had three catches today Crazier.
43:42The ball has followed him.
43:45Three for Hatton.
43:46Three for Crazier.
43:47And there's Daddles.
43:50It's a tough finish for South Africa.
43:52They were going along so nicely.
43:54They were establishing at least a match up in the first innings.
43:59But it looks like now Australia are going to go in with a healthy lead in the second innings.
44:03There's two wickets to get for the Aussies.
44:05They'll have to clean it up on the start of day three.
44:08But it is hard to figure why all these wickets are lost.
44:21Final ball.
44:23Crazier to Boucher.
44:26Oh.
44:28Spun as well.
44:30Boucher kept it out.
44:31What a day of test cricket.
44:32Ricky Ponty.
44:33He will have a smile on his face very shortly.
44:36I'm sure.
44:37Particularly with that last 40 minutes of play.
44:4040 minutes ago South Africa were three for 2.34.

44:48And Mitchell Johnson's been the hero.
44:5118 over seven for 42.
44:55He has the opportunity to get the best bowling figures of all time in Australia versus South
45:00Africa test matches.
45:03Well you'd say he's going to get them.
45:04He's going to get the new ball in the morning isn't he?
45:06He's going to start off and then the new ball will be taken.
45:08Maybe it won't be taken.
45:10They need two wickets and Mitchell Johnson put him down for eight for it.
45:14Even nine times.
45:16Outstanding performance.
45:18The hero.
45:20And Brett Lee.
45:20He gives a cuddle.
45:22He's been wicketless.

45:38And number five.
45:40Dumini.
45:42Heels changing quickly here wasn't it?
45:44It certainly was.
45:46And then Mauchel.
45:47Deceived by the slower ball and the skill of Mitchell Johnson.
45:50It pitched right where it needed to.
45:52Then round the wickets.
45:53The flick.
45:54The whip.
45:55Goes to Grazier as well.
45:56Not everything going to hand.
45:58An impressive display.
45:59By Australia.
46:00With bat, ball and in the field today.
46:04And I'm sure he'll get a huge applause.
46:07Not just from the Australian players.
46:08But from the crowd.
46:09As he leaves the ground.
46:14That bowling spell has Australia well in front for going.
46:16Look at the crowd down there.
46:22So a great day for Mitchell Johnson.
