Non-EU citizens most likely to have temporary and part-time work in the bloc

Non-EU citizens in the bloc face higher rates of temporary and part-time jobs compared to EU nationals, with some countries showing greater disparities than others. What factors are behind it?

00:00Where are non-EU citizens working in the bloc?
00:07Between 2015 and 2025, non-EU citizens aged 20 to 64 living in the bloc's 27 member states
00:15were consistently the highest proportion of employees on temporary contracts,
00:19while EU nationals of the same age had the lowest.
00:23However, the share has decreased in recent years, reaching its lowest level in 2025,
00:28according to the latest Eurostad figures.
00:31The highest shares of non-EU citizens employed with temporary contracts
00:35were observed in Cyprus, the Netherlands and Poland, all exceeding 40%.
00:40In addition, female employees had a higher share of temporary contracts than males
00:45across all citizenship groups.
00:47Part-time employment was also seen the most in non-EU citizens at around 22%,
00:52while nationals had a share of around 17%.
00:56The largest disparity between nationals and non-EU citizens for part-time work
01:00was observed in the Netherlands, followed by Finland and France.
01:04On the other hand, self-employment was highest among EU citizens living in their home countries.
01:10This was followed by EU citizens living in other EU countries at 10.9%
01:15and non-EU citizens at 10.1%.
01:18Nationals recorded particularly high shares in Greece and Italy,
01:23while citizens of other EU countries show the highest shares in Croatia and Portugal.
