00:05A unique civic initiative from Assam's Tinsukhia has sparked a nationwide debate on public hygiene.
00:11The municipality has begun to display images of people allegedly caught urinating in public on LED screens.
00:19So what is otherwise seen as perhaps a normal in India will now be used to possibly, some would say,
00:27rightly shame those who think urinating in public is just a common thing that Indians tend to do.
00:35The move, though, has drawn mixed reactions. Some are welcoming the move and saying this name and shame approach
00:41is going to act as a strong deterrent against habitual offenders.
00:44But some are raising concerns that there is, after all, a certain privacy and dignity of anyone, of individuals here.
00:49And how can you put that on the big screens?
00:52The campaign has reignited discussion in other cities as well.
00:55But there is a call for stricter action.
00:58Remember, for years now in India, there has been a call or a plea by the general public
01:03that public urinators, spitters, civic violators must have a certain deterrent set against them.
01:11Here's what Milind Diora, a Shiv Sena MP, has called for the model's possible implementation in Mumbai.
01:18You will see that in today's news, in Asaam's 303 municipalities, there is a very innovative approach
01:31that they have decided that if any individual who is caught habitually urinating in public, that person's photograph will be
01:43shared on a public LED screen to name them and shame them.
02:08In my opinion, such people who have been notorious for failing to do their work at a ward level.
02:13In my opinion, such people's photos should also be published, should also be made public through public LED screens.
02:23Unless we name, shame and find people, I do not believe that we will be able to instill civic sense
02:30in our country.
02:32So that's the big initiative and will it be followed in other cities or should I ask, should it be
02:37followed in other cities?
