Meta plans to invest C$13 billion in its first Canadian data center, expanding AI computing capacity through a gigawatt-scale facility in Alberta.

00:02Meta announced plans to build its first Canadian data center in central Alberta
00:06as it expands computing capacity for AI, according to Reuters.
00:10The one-gigawatt facility in Sturgeon County can scale to 1.8 gigawatts
00:14and represents a 13 billion Canadian dollars, or 9.17 billion dollars investment.
00:20Meta said the project is its 33rd data center globally.
00:23Alberta officials said several other gigawatt-scale data center proposals
00:27are in development in the province.
00:30Meta said it will fund new generation and grid infrastructure for the site,
00:34which will use about as much electricity as 800,000 homes.
00:38The company partnered with Pembina Pipeline on a natural gas-fired power facility
00:42and will receive interim power from Capital Power.
00:46Canada's AI strategy said new data center growth could benefit from the country's clean electricity grid,
00:51which is largely powered by renewables and low-emission sources.
