Malaysia, Thailand agree to ramp up border cooperation, economic projects

Malaysia and Thailand agree to accelerate cross-border economic cooperation, streamline immigration and customs procedures, and fast-track a long-delayed fisheries agreement. The neighboring countries also reaffirm their support for peace efforts in Thailand's insurgency-hit south.

00:20We will now commence with the joint press conference with a statement by the Honorable Prime Minister.
00:25Thank you, Honorable Prime Minister.
00:30First, on connectivity and border development.
00:33I inform Premier Anwar that ending violence and addressing the challenges in Thailand's southern border provinces remains a top priority
00:44for my government.
00:46Today, we reaffirm our shared conviction that peace and development must go hand in hand.
00:53Peace creates the conditions for development, while development helps build lasting peace.
01:01We agreed also to proceed with the special border economic zones and to facilitate exchanges in immigration customs between the
01:13two countries.
01:14And we have resolved this issue of outstanding issues of fisheries with both ministers' commitment.
01:23And they wanted the memorandum to continue and be affected in one and a half month.
01:29And we agreed it should be affected in one week.
01:32We in Malaysia is of the opinion that the best way to resolve this longstanding issue is through effective engagement
01:43and to allow for Myanmar people to decide for themselves.
01:49And Thailand, as an important friend and neighbour, can play a pivotal role.
01:54Thank you very much to the foreign minister for taking an initiative to invite all ASEAN foreign ministers to deliberate
02:01this further and listen to the various parties, including the new Myanmar foreign minister.
