00:00Deputy Law and Institutional Reform Minister M Kulasegaran told the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday
00:06that MPs may be allowed to view CCTV footage of the Taiping Prison Riot as early as next week,
00:14subject to Cabinet approval.
00:40Kulasegaran pointed out that two parliamentary committees have already seen the footage.
00:45He said all MPs must also be allowed access to it and other relevant information to enable
00:51them to properly carry out their check and balance role.
00:54However, the Minister said legal concerns must first be considered,
00:59including whether releasing the footage could affect ongoing court proceedings.
01:05Kulasegaran was responding to calls from Kota Melaka MP Ku Puey Tiong
01:09and Jelotong MP RSN Rear for the footage to be made available to all MPs.
01:15The Minister also praised Suhakam for acting quickly,
01:19saying its investigation had helped bring the incident to light,
01:23leading to action taken against several persons.
01:26The footage captures a January 2025 incident in which around 60 prison wardens
01:32allegedly assaulted more than 100 inmates when transferring them between cell blocks.
01:38One detainee, Gan Chin Eng, died as a result.
