00:03The sights and the sounds of NAIDOC week.
00:08Great spirit, God bless you all, welcome on Yuggera country.
00:13Those born and raised in the Brisbane suburb of Inala say the event looks a little different these days.
00:19They've changed a hell of a lot, you know. We used to have it one time at the shopping centre,
00:24you know.
00:25Little gathering there of people, you know.
00:27Now we've got this big football field here.
00:30But one thing stays the same.
00:32Just catching up with people and having a good time.
00:36From youth.
00:37I started loving you again.
00:41To experience, not even this former blues player could stay out of enemy territory on an origin decider day.
00:49A lot of people let me know how they feel, especially the elders, you know, they shoot straight.
00:53For all those in attendance, the origin of this event remains close to heart.
00:58I'm in my 40s and I'm still learning every day about what it is to be Aboriginal.
01:03Even though we've come from a sad past, it's always a brighter future.
01:07This year's NAIDOC theme is 50 years of deadly.
01:10Honouring those that kick-started a movement of celebration, protest and survival.
01:16So, what does the word deadly mean to people here in Inala?
01:20Like, oh my God, look at that, that's deadly.
01:23Yeah, deadly is just, it's just the pinnacle of what Aboriginality is.
01:27Be proud, I'd say, be proud of who you are.
01:29Be deadly, yeah, be proud.
01:30As soon as we say the word deadly, their face lights up and we just have an instant connection and
01:36they just feel that pride.
01:38So, it's a real empowering word.
01:40Good.
01:40Yeah, good.
01:40Yeah.
01:42Yeah.
01:42You
