00:01U.S. President Donald Trump once again targeted Spain, calling it a wasted cause and threatening to cut off all
00:08trade with the country.
00:10Trump's remarks came during a joint appearance before the press with NATO Secretary General Mercurito.
00:16The U.S. leader took aim at Pedro Sánchez's government over its refusal to raise defense spending to 5%
00:22of its GDP.
00:23I didn't speak to Spain. Spain is a wasted cause. We don't want to do any trade business with Spain
00:29anymore, by the way. I'd like you to cut it off.
00:31Spain is a terrible partner in NATO. They don't participate, they don't pay.
00:39According to sources close to Sánchez, the prime minister has been preparing for this scenario.
00:44The government put together a set of talking points and data to respond to Trump's attacks.
00:48Meanwhile, NATO Chief Mercurito defended Spain, saying the country already reached 2% of GDP in defense spending because of
00:56Trump's demands.
00:57NATO's own technical projections suggest spending 2.1%, which Spain says will be enough to meet its commitments.
