Tom Merriam (played by Russell Wade) joins the freighter Altair eager to serve under Captain Will Stone (Richard Dix). However, after mysterious, deliberate deaths begin to happen among the crew, Merriam realizes Stone is responsible, driven by a twisted philosophy that he has the ultimate right to control the lives of "insubordinate" men. When Merriam tries to expose the captain, he finds himself trapped on a voyage with a madman.

00:00:00The End
00:01:27Thank you, sir. Being a sailor, you'll need luck.
00:01:30A young sailor, too. I don't need eyes to tell me that. Young seamen all want luck when they're outward
00:01:37bound. Only the old ones know that there's nothing but bad luck and bad blows at sea.
00:01:45An officer, too.
00:01:47How'd you know?
00:01:48I heard your suitcase go down. A seaman would be having a soft bag.
00:01:56Thank you, sir. Thank you, sir. If it's the old Terrier boarding, sir, she's a bad ship.
00:02:02You've got a blind man's tricks for telling what men are like.
00:02:05But ships...
00:02:06You can't tell about ships.
00:02:09This ship lay becalmed in the tropical seas.
00:02:14Way, hey, blow the man down.
00:02:18He whistled all day.
00:02:20But in vain for a breeze.
00:02:24I'm the third officer. Where can I find the captain?
00:02:44This is another man I can never know, because I cannot talk with him.
00:02:49For I am a mute and cannot speak.
00:02:53I am cut off from other men.
00:02:56But in my own silence,
00:02:58I can hear things they cannot hear.
00:03:01Know things they can never know.
00:03:10Okay, fellas. Pull that cover over here.
00:03:28Pull that cover over here.
00:03:57Mr. Miriam?
00:03:58Yes, sir.
00:03:59I'm Captain Stone.
00:04:00How do you do, sir?
00:04:03I chose you, Miriam, and I don't regret my choice.
00:04:05Thank you, sir.
00:04:06I looked up the records of the training ship graduates.
00:04:09You seem the most likely man for me.
00:04:11Do you know why?
00:04:12No, sir.
00:04:13Your history could have been my own at your age.
00:04:16Often.
00:04:18Serious.
00:04:19Hardworking.
00:04:20Anxious to get somewhere.
00:04:23We'll get on, you and I.
00:04:26I like a good ship.
00:04:27A clean ship.
00:04:28An obedient ship.
00:04:30As third officer, you'll have certain authority.
00:04:32Use it well, and the altar will be that kind of a ship.
00:04:34I'll do everything I can.
00:04:36Fine.
00:04:37Now you better go to your quarters and get yourself ready for work.
00:04:39All right, sir.
00:04:44Don't.
00:04:45You know a right to kill that moth.
00:04:47Its safety doesn't depend on you.
00:04:49I'm sorry.
00:04:50I don't understand.
00:04:52Well, never mind.
00:04:53I'll explain sometime.
00:04:55We have a long voyage ahead of us, and you know that's one of the nice things about a long
00:04:58voyage is time for talk.
00:05:00Time for friendship.
00:05:02You'll find your cabin in the main deck.
00:05:04All right, sir.
00:05:16Oh, Stuart.
00:05:18Yes, sir.
00:05:18My name is Miriam.
00:05:19I'm the new third.
00:05:20Oh, your quarters are right over here, Mr. Miriam.
00:05:36Well, the berth isn't made up.
00:05:38Sorry, sir.
00:05:38I haven't had a chance since Mr. Lengert died.
00:05:40He was the last third officer.
00:05:43He died in this berth?
00:05:45That's right, sir.
00:05:46He had such convulsions, he would have died on the floor if he hadn't been held in the berth.
00:05:55Somehow it seemed more proper for him to die there than on the floor, sir.
00:05:59Well, what was the matter with him?
00:06:01I don't know, sir.
00:06:02He didn't want to die.
00:06:03He was always telling funny stories.
00:06:06Well, make it up.
00:06:07Can you change the blankets as well as the sheets?
00:06:09Yes, sir.
00:06:09And open the portal there.
00:06:10As soon as we're underway, we'll get some air in here.
00:06:12Yes, sir.
00:06:13We'll be shoving off in an hour, sir.
00:06:17I'll check you guys.
00:06:18The captain wants to look at you.
00:06:19Rise and shine for the Dunham land.
00:06:21I don't mean one.
00:06:22I don't mean two.
00:06:22I mean the whole speech bellboy through.
00:06:25Stipper wants to look you over.
00:06:27Get in there, tall one.
00:06:32Hey, you, Scotty.
00:06:33Can the music.
00:06:35On deck.
00:06:36Come on, Scotty.
00:06:37I ain't Scotts, boss.
00:06:38I'm Greek.
00:06:39There's only Greeks can play these things good.
00:06:41In the home country, we play them to the sheeps.
00:06:43Sheeps.
00:06:44You get all the sheeps you want.
00:06:45We're going south for full cargo.
00:06:47Sheep hides, mutton, tallow.
00:06:49Why, we even bring back the smell of the sheep.
00:06:54We have a new crew, Mr. Miriam.
00:06:56You and Mr. Bounds better look them over.
00:06:59Come on, Miriam.
00:07:04Go ahead, boats.
00:07:05Rossman Jack.
00:07:06Here.
00:07:07Vincent William.
00:07:08Here.
00:07:08Carter Claude.
00:07:10Present.
00:07:10Claude.
00:07:14Hyped on you guys.
00:07:16Corbin John.
00:07:17Here.
00:07:18I've shipped with this man before.
00:07:19He's a good seaman, sir.
00:07:21Thank you, mister.
00:07:22Okay.
00:07:22Waterman.
00:07:23Here.
00:07:24Milchros Peter.
00:07:25Here.
00:07:25Winston Paulo.
00:07:29Paulo.
00:07:31The guy's a dummy.
00:07:33Ben.
00:07:34Keep your eye on that man Boats.
00:07:36I don't want any trouble on this ship.
00:07:38McCall Tom.
00:07:39Yeah.
00:07:40O'Connor Jack.
00:07:41Present.
00:07:41Parker Lewis.
00:07:42Here, teacher.
00:07:47Brad William.
00:07:48I'm Billy Rad from La Trinidad.
00:07:51I've got you guys.
00:07:53Jensen George.
00:07:54George Jensen.
00:07:55Jensen!
00:07:58Juan Jim.
00:07:59Here.
00:07:59Wait Leonard.
00:08:00Here.
00:08:01Everybody here, sir, except Jensen.
00:08:03Maybe in the folksle.
00:08:05George is right behind me when we came out the folksle, sir.
00:08:08Jensen.
00:08:11George Jensen!
00:08:17Jensen!
00:08:20There he is.
00:08:22George, George.
00:08:34Captain, I don't get any pulse.
00:08:36I'm afraid the man's dead.
00:08:38Most likely heart failure, Mr. Bounds.
00:08:40He was an old man.
00:08:45The man is dead.
00:08:48With his death, the waters of the sea are open to us.
00:08:52But there will be other death and the agony of dying before we come to land again.
00:09:22Log at zero, sir.
00:09:27Log set at zero, sir.
00:09:29823.
00:09:29Fine.
00:09:32Seems good to get going.
00:09:34I heard one of the men putting it another way.
00:09:36Heard him say,
00:09:37The ship comes to life at sea.
00:09:39I suppose that's the way all sailors feel.
00:09:41It's good for a sailor to go to sea.
00:09:43It's even better for an officer.
00:09:46That's a good feeling.
00:09:49In San Pedro, I was just another captain.
00:09:52At sea, I am the captain.
00:09:58It's got to be coiled with the sun.
00:10:00It's a wall of the sea.
00:10:02That ain't law.
00:10:03If you break a law, you get arrested.
00:10:05If you milk the cow the wrong way, she kicks.
00:10:07If you coiled a rope the wrong way, it can't kick.
00:10:10I believe in logic.
00:10:14Board ship, you better believe in the captain and forget logic.
00:10:16You coil a line the wrong way once, and you'll find out.
00:10:20A captain's got more law at sea than any man on land has got.
00:10:24Even the king of...
00:10:25Of Siam.
00:10:27Or the president of the United States.
00:10:30Why a captain can marry you.
00:10:32Not me.
00:10:33I hate a way.
00:10:36No, sir.
00:10:37I don't feel any difference.
00:10:39When I was on the training ship, I was a cadet.
00:10:41Now I'm an officer.
00:10:43Somehow I don't feel different.
00:10:45You should.
00:10:46It's all the difference between being a man and being a boy.
00:10:50It's more than that.
00:10:51It's the difference between being a man and being an officer.
00:10:54I know, but somehow I can't believe yet that I'm an officer.
00:10:57Pass my examinations.
00:10:59Qualified.
00:11:00Still, I haven't that feeling that you speak about.
00:11:03That feeling of authority.
00:11:05You'll learn it.
00:11:06You'll even learn to take great joy in it.
00:11:16Is he sick?
00:11:18I have never been seasick.
00:11:20Papaz rocked me in his arms when I was baptized.
00:11:23That's the way you keep a good Greek kid from getting sick at sea.
00:11:27What's the matter with your belly, then?
00:11:29It hurts.
00:11:32She's a beautiful ship, Captain.
00:11:35Beautiful ship for a first berth.
00:11:37She's a beautiful ship to command.
00:11:48I am.
00:11:48Hiya, Tertius.
00:11:51I'm Sparks.
00:11:53What did you call me?
00:11:54Tertius.
00:11:55What's that mean?
00:11:56You share Bill Shakespeare's lack of knowledge.
00:11:59No Latin and less Greek.
00:12:01Tertius, my ignorant friend, means third.
00:12:03And, uh, you're the third officer.
00:12:06I suppose it'd be a big help to give deck orders in Latin.
00:12:09It's not much use on the radio, either.
00:12:11Come on in.
00:12:11All right.
00:12:14It's a relief to find someone on board I can talk to.
00:12:17All I've been doing is saying yes, sir, all morning.
00:12:19Captain?
00:12:20No, thanks.
00:12:22Me, I take the Captain Coombe Grano Salas.
00:12:26Remember, I don't like Shakespeare.
00:12:27With a grain of salt.
00:12:29I like the old man.
00:12:31He seems a good skipper.
00:12:32I've sailed with him before.
00:12:34No, I mean it.
00:12:36I like the way he talks.
00:12:37Things he has to say.
00:12:39I don't know.
00:12:40I just stick to my job here.
00:12:41I don't mix with the officers.
00:12:43But I'll be glad to teach you Latin
00:12:45or take some money away from your cards.
00:12:47All right.
00:12:48I'll look in on you after my watch.
00:13:08Okay, I got you.
00:13:111.42.
00:13:211.42, sir.
00:13:23Everything going well on your watch, Mr. Miriam?
00:13:25Well, everything's fine, sir.
00:13:26But I think I'll have that hook secured before I go below.
00:13:29We might run into a sea.
00:13:31That's fresh pain, Mr. Miriam.
00:13:33A line will mar it.
00:13:35I like a neat ship.
00:13:36Yes, sir.
00:13:45Want that hook made fast, mister?
00:13:47Might be hard to do if it gets sloppy.
00:13:49No boats, not yet.
00:13:51Pain's too wet.
00:14:11Lights are bright, sir.
00:14:14Better turn in, Tom.
00:14:15Get some sleep before your watch.
00:14:17Okay.
00:14:22Haven't you deck officers any regard for life and limb?
00:14:25That's all right.
00:14:26All right?
00:14:27Why, you fellas could kill a guy with that.
00:14:29You'd better secure it.
00:14:30It's freshly painted.
00:14:31We don't want to mar the paint.
00:14:33You'll mar somebody's skull if you don't do something about it.
00:14:36I'll speak to the captain.
00:14:41Excuse me, sir.
00:14:42If you want to discuss the hook with me, Miriam,
00:14:44I've already given you my considered opinion as to the danger involved.
00:15:08On the bridge, the hook!
00:15:24On the bridge, the hook!
00:15:26Look out!
00:15:27Hey!
00:15:42John, John, you men there.
00:15:44Get in and get that hook.
00:15:46Make fast as in.
00:15:47I'll pass it around the hook.
00:15:50Blow away that wedge.
00:15:52I can't.
00:15:53The cable's found.
00:15:54Get out, John.
00:15:54Stop it.
00:15:55Get out of the hook.
00:15:57Get out!
00:16:19Put a stopper on that hook, Mr. Miriam.
00:16:35Well, back to the black hole of Calcutta.
00:16:46What are you thinking about, Mr. Miriam?
00:16:49I think I can tell you.
00:16:50You're thinking about the hook.
00:16:53You made up your mind that I was negligent.
00:16:55That's about it, isn't it?
00:16:56Yes, sir, I was thinking that.
00:16:58You have no right to think that, you know.
00:17:01The responsibility is yours.
00:17:03Mine?
00:17:04I don't see that, sir.
00:17:05I warned you about the hook.
00:17:07I told you twice about it.
00:17:08Exactly.
00:17:10That's what I referred to.
00:17:11You almost forced me in a position where I had to show my authority,
00:17:15even though it put me in the wrong.
00:17:16I didn't see it that way.
00:17:19But granted, I was wrong, sir.
00:17:20I don't see how you dared risk the lives of John and the other men.
00:17:23I have rights over their lives, Mr. Miriam.
00:17:27Do you remember the first day you came into my office?
00:17:29Only vaguely.
00:17:30I told you you had no right to kill that moth,
00:17:33because its safety did not depend on you.
00:17:36But I have the right to do what I want with the crew,
00:17:38because their safety does depend on me.
00:17:40I stand ready any hour of the day or night to give my life for their safety
00:17:44and for the safety of this vessel.
00:17:47And because I do, I have certain rights of risk over them.
00:17:51Now, do you understand?
00:17:53Yes, sir.
00:17:53I think I understand.
00:17:55You must understand.
00:17:56It's the first thing you'll have to learn about authority.
00:18:03This liniment should have penetrated by now, Peter.
00:18:06It's always worked like magic on cows and horses.
00:18:09And it's the only thing that ever cured my old man's lumbago.
00:18:15It's the liniment, plus a kind of hypnotism,
00:18:18something I've got in my hands.
00:18:23Now, how's that?
00:18:25Feel okay now, don't you?
00:18:27Is the other side where the pain is, Tim?
00:18:31You mean to tell me you've just been laying there
00:18:34and letting me rub on this side?
00:18:35When it's there?
00:18:36Ha-ha!
00:18:39Mr. Merriam.
00:18:42I was working on him,
00:18:43and I just touched him there, and he passed right out.
00:18:48Has he ever complained of pain here before?
00:18:51Panama calling Altair.
00:18:54Is the patient under anesthetic?
00:18:55Altair to Panama.
00:18:57Patient is asleep, breathing very heavily.
00:19:01If the patient is completely anesthetized,
00:19:03you may proceed.
00:19:05Are you ready?
00:19:10Altair to Panama.
00:19:11We are ready.
00:19:13Panama to Altair.
00:19:15Captain Stone will bring his right hand
00:19:17to the point which we have already established
00:19:19as the region of the appendix.
00:19:21Place the point of the scapel
00:19:23exactly on this spot.
00:19:30Make the incision.
00:19:33Incise to a depth of one quarter inch.
00:19:40Continue with the incision vertically, four inches.
00:19:57Have you made the incision?
00:20:00Penemol to Altair.
00:20:02Altair to Panama.
00:20:02Have you made the incision?
00:20:08Altair to Panama.
00:20:09Wait a minute.
00:20:10We're not ready yet.
00:20:27Altair to Panama.
00:20:28Wait a minute.
00:20:29We're not ready yet.
00:20:31Altair to Panama.
00:20:31Make an incision.
00:20:32Make an incision a quarter of an inch deep,
00:20:34four inches on the vertical line already described.
00:20:48Altair to Panama.
00:20:49Altair to Panama.
00:20:50The incision has been made.
00:21:03You're not doing so good with that, Louie.
00:21:05The Greek says you've got to be a Greek to play on it.
00:21:08How do I know he ain't?
00:21:09How do you know you ain't going to catch a panesitis from it?
00:21:12Huh?
00:21:14I've heard it's catching.
00:21:16Nah.
00:21:17Wonder how they're getting on.
00:21:19For me, I've got magnetic hands, healing hands.
00:21:23Still, I wouldn't want to be in the captain's shoes.
00:21:26It ain't easy.
00:21:27Hello, Panama.
00:21:28Hello.
00:21:29Government hospital, Panama.
00:21:30Dr. Oslo.
00:21:31Steamship Altair.
00:21:32Radio operator speaking.
00:21:34Altair, come in.
00:21:36Hello, doctor.
00:21:37Patient is breathing normally.
00:21:39Heartbeat is good.
00:21:40Thank you, Dr. Oslo.
00:21:41We will continue to follow with instructions.
00:21:44Compliments of Captain Stone.
00:21:46Thank you again, Altair.
00:21:47Signing off.
00:21:51Tertius, well done.
00:21:53You're a gent.
00:21:54And you'll be a scholar if you hang around me.
00:21:57Give me a cigarette, will you?
00:21:58Sure.
00:22:02Thanks.
00:22:06He'll live, God willing.
00:22:08And no thanks to the captain.
00:22:10Sparks.
00:22:13Let's not say anything about this.
00:22:15What do you mean?
00:22:16I mean, let's not tell anyone the captain didn't do the operation.
00:22:19You're crazy.
00:22:20But you know how it is.
00:22:21Some guys don't like the sight of blood and things like that.
00:22:24Okay, if you want it that way.
00:22:26But me?
00:22:27I'd like to hear the next conversation you have with the captain.
00:22:30One of those talks he gives on authority.
00:22:37Mark.
00:22:47Can I see you for a moment?
00:22:49Yes, sir.
00:22:57Mr. Miriam, I want to thank you for yesterday.
00:22:59Oh, that's all right, sir.
00:23:01I'd like to thank you and I'd like to explain.
00:23:03Oh, you don't have to explain, sir.
00:23:04There are a lot of people that are squeamish about blood.
00:23:06Oh, I'm not squeamish, Mr. Miriam.
00:23:08I'm not afraid of anything but failure.
00:23:10That's why I didn't go through with the operation.
00:23:13I'm a sea captain.
00:23:14I know my profession.
00:23:15But I'm not a doctor and I might have failed.
00:23:19You see that, don't you, Tom?
00:23:20Of course I do, sir.
00:23:22I knew you'd see it.
00:23:23I knew you'd see it just as I knew the first time I saw you that you were the man
00:23:26for me.
00:23:27A man who would think as I think.
00:23:29I've not been disappointed.
00:23:34Oh, hiya, Tertius.
00:23:36You haven't said anything, Sparks, about my having performed the operation, have you?
00:23:40Uh-huh.
00:23:41I just thought I'd remind you.
00:23:43Been talking with the captain again?
00:23:45Yeah.
00:23:46He's been talking about authority?
00:23:48That's right.
00:23:49It made a lot of sense.
00:23:51There's something in what he says.
00:23:52Wasn't much sense in what he did yesterday, was there?
00:23:55He explained all that.
00:23:56Yeah, I'll bet.
00:23:57He's a smooth man with the words of the captain.
00:23:59Now, wait a minute, Sparks.
00:24:01You've got him all wrong.
00:24:02He's the first older man who's ever treated me like a friend.
00:24:05And that means something.
00:24:07Yeah, I know.
00:24:09I can see your way of thinking.
00:24:11You had a tough time when you were a kid.
00:24:12Not much friendliness.
00:24:14But, Tom, there's a friendliness that tries to get you to thinking wrong.
00:24:20If that's got nothing to do with me, we're bound south, it's a long voyage, 9 to 10 radio.
00:24:26A seal heard his whistle and loudly did fall.
00:24:31Way, blow the man down.
00:24:35Roll up your white canvas, jib spanker and all.
00:24:40Give me some time to blow the man down.
00:24:46Then the breeze it blew gaily, a terrible gale.
00:24:50Way, blow the man down.
00:24:54And the ship blew a little.
00:25:02Now, if you guys want any more, you can get it yourself.
00:25:05Okay, Stu.
00:25:09Boats.
00:25:11Captain's complaining about the way the deck's being kept.
00:25:13I know, mister.
00:25:14It ain't as spick and span as I'd like it.
00:25:15We're shorthanded with Jensen dead and the Greek and his boy.
00:25:18The boy's been taking turns standing double watches.
00:25:20Yeah.
00:25:21Can't help that.
00:25:22The captain wants a clean ship.
00:25:24All right, sir.
00:25:39You're crazy.
00:25:41Who ever heard of a captain putting in a port just because one man's dead and one man's off duty?
00:25:46I've been to sea since I've been a boy.
00:25:48I've never heard of anything like that.
00:25:50That's because most sailors don't know the law.
00:25:52With the Greek sick, the captain ought to put into the nearest port to fill up the crew.
00:25:56Why, you told me yourself that the captain is the law at sea.
00:26:00That's the way it used to be.
00:26:02Now they've got new laws.
00:26:03And the new laws say the captain's got to put in a port to fill up his crew on a
00:26:06coast-wise trip.
00:26:08Never heard of it.
00:26:09Why don't you tell all that to the captain yourself, Louie?
00:26:11Who wants to bet I don't dare?
00:26:13I bet you a thousand bucks you don't.
00:26:14Ah, you four flushes wouldn't bet ten real cents.
00:26:19Put up or shut up.
00:26:27So I felt it only proper to bring this just complaint of the men to you in person, Captain.
00:26:33You know, there are captains who might hold this against you, Louie.
00:26:53Hey, in there!
00:26:54Nearly finished?
00:26:56I'm ready, sir.
00:27:13All right, let her go.
00:27:40All right, let's go.
00:27:43All right, let her go!
00:27:46All right, let her go!
00:28:18Start washing down.
00:28:19I'll take a look at the locker.
00:28:35What's wrong?
00:28:42You better get a couple of men down here and get that cleaned up.
00:28:45It's Louie.
00:28:46He was a troublemaker.
00:28:47But he was a nice guy.
00:28:49Always kidding.
00:28:51You're impressed.
00:28:52Death is so absolute.
00:28:55You looked into the chain locker.
00:28:56No more Louie.
00:28:58No more insolent remarks.
00:29:00No more danger to the discipline of the ship.
00:29:02You didn't like him.
00:29:04Of course I didn't like him.
00:29:06He was a sea lawyer full of windy complaints.
00:29:08Seasoned with bad comedy.
00:29:10So you shut the hatch.
00:29:12Shut the hatch?
00:29:14What do you mean, Mr. Merriam?
00:29:16The hatch was shut.
00:29:19And I think it was locked.
00:29:21You accused me of doing this out of spite because the man was insubordinate?
00:29:25This is what you meant when you said you had rights over the lives of the crew.
00:29:29You murdered him.
00:29:30You're a little hasty, Mr. Merriam.
00:29:32You can't expect me just to stand by and watch you kill a man.
00:29:36What do you propose to do?
00:29:38Denounce me?
00:29:46May I speak to you a moment, Mr. Bounds, on a matter of great importance?
00:29:50What is it?
00:29:51What is the law about an incompetent captain, Mr. Bounds?
00:29:54Now, why interrupt me with a question like that when you say I'm working?
00:29:58You know the answer.
00:29:59The first officer would take over.
00:30:01I think the captain is incompetent.
00:30:04Louie getting killed in the chain locker, that wasn't an accident.
00:30:07The captain did it purposely.
00:30:09I don't know what you're trying to pull, fella.
00:30:12But my advice is pulling your ears before you get yourself into a jam that you don't like.
00:30:18Now, get away from me.
00:30:19I'm busy.
00:30:19But, Mr. Bounds, I'm not joking.
00:30:21You heard me.
00:30:23And I'm the first officer.
00:30:39Hey, what's wrong, kid?
00:30:41The captain's crazy, Sparks.
00:30:43Sure, the captain's crazy.
00:30:45Anyone who would ride one hobby horse so hard is bound to be bugs.
00:30:49And what a hobby to pick.
00:30:51Authority.
00:30:52Well, I'm glad you believe me.
00:30:54Bounds practically threw me off the ship.
00:30:56Sure.
00:30:57The captain's a little touched.
00:30:59This isn't a gag.
00:31:00I mean it.
00:31:01He's really crazy.
00:31:02Insane.
00:31:04Hey, now.
00:31:05You know, well, most people are.
00:31:07But he killed Louie.
00:31:08That wasn't an accident in the chain locker.
00:31:10That was murder.
00:31:11You know, kid, you might be a little excited yourself.
00:31:14Well, let me tell you from the beginning.
00:31:15Uh-uh.
00:31:15Not me.
00:31:16Don't tell me.
00:31:17I like my job and I want to keep it.
00:31:19When we get to port, I'm going to tell the company agent.
00:31:21You'll lose your job.
00:31:23Even if I believe you, I advise you not to.
00:31:25Can't mean that, Sparks.
00:31:27I believe in keeping my nose clean.
00:31:29Really clean.
00:31:30And out of other people's business.
00:31:32That's the only way to get along.
00:31:34Not me.
00:31:35When something's wrong, I've got to do something about it.
00:31:37I'm going to report this when we get ashore.
00:31:42Oh, dearie-goo, oh, it's home I want to be.
00:31:50My topsails are hoisted and I must have to see.
00:32:00For the oak and the arch and the pony virgin.
00:32:08All right.
00:32:13Report to the captain.
00:32:14San Sebastian Light, two points off the port bow.
00:32:16Yes, sir.
00:32:19Here we come to San Sebastian, going to see my happy land.
00:32:23And my heart is filled with great delight, going to see my girls and I.
00:32:27To a dance hall we will all go, to the waltz and de tango.
00:32:31And we'll break away, I mean to say, in that old Sebastian Light.
00:32:37All right, sir.
00:32:44Hello, Will.
00:32:45It's good to see you.
00:32:45Always good to see you, Charlie.
00:32:48I'd like you to know my first officer, Mr. Bowne.
00:32:49Mr. Bowne.
00:32:50Mr. Roberts.
00:32:51And my third, Mr. Miriam.
00:32:52Mr. Miriam.
00:32:52How do you do, sir?
00:32:53Mr. Roberts is our agent here.
00:32:55Is this your first voyage to this port, Mr. Miriam?
00:32:57Yes, in fact, it's my first long voyage.
00:32:59But if you drop into the office, I'll see you get a guide.
00:33:02Thank you, sir.
00:33:02You sure can take him up on that town?
00:33:04The Dunham line may be strict aboard ship, but you'll find it friendly on shore.
00:33:08Don't forget to drop by the office.
00:33:50Well, I'm glad you accepted my invitation so promptly, Mr. Merriam.
00:33:56Actually, I'd like to have a few words with you, Mr. Roberts, on a matter of great importance.
00:34:00Of course.
00:34:00Please sit down.
00:34:02Make yourself comfortable.
00:34:03All right, Jose, you can go now.
00:34:05Yes, sir.
00:34:10Well, Mr. Merriam, what is the matter of importance?
00:34:13It's about Captain Stone, sir.
00:34:15An old friend, a great friend of mine, Mr. Merriam.
00:34:18That makes it all the more difficult.
00:34:20What I have to tell you is extremely unpleasant.
00:34:22And not the Captain.
00:34:23It was Mr. Merriam himself who gave the order not to stop with a hook.
00:34:27To my mind, sir, Mr. Merriam had been working kind of hard or something.
00:34:30Now, this is my first voyage with Captain Stone, as it is a first for all the crew,
00:34:34except Mr. Bounds, the radio operator, and the steward.
00:34:37And all the men are agreed that a fair and able captain...
00:34:39That'll do, Boats.
00:34:40All right, sir.
00:34:42All right.
00:34:43Well, Billy, I'd like to hear what you have to say about the Captain.
00:34:52I'd like to know whether you think him competent,
00:34:54whether you think he had anything to do with the death of Louis Carter.
00:34:57No, sir.
00:34:58It's like the other said.
00:34:59We just can't understand it.
00:35:01The Captain is a good Captain,
00:35:03what you call a kind man and a gentleman.
00:35:06And Mr. Merriam, he was always a fine gentleman.
00:35:08We all like Mr. Merriam, too.
00:35:10And that'll do for now, Billy.
00:35:13If I could have your permission,
00:35:15I would like to mention just one thing, Mr. Roberts, sir.
00:35:18The Captain here hasn't only given us the best food
00:35:21and looked after the ship his own self at all times,
00:35:23but he saved my life by that apparition at sea.
00:35:27And I never in my life can forget that.
00:35:33Should I call in any more witnesses, Mr. Merriam?
00:35:37You men may be a little puzzled by what's been going on here.
00:35:41Mr. Merriam made certain statements,
00:35:43and I called this informal hearing to prove to him how unfounded they were.
00:35:47I felt it my duty as the company agent
00:35:49to prevent public investigation of a baseless charge.
00:35:53Thank you all for cooperating so splendidly.
00:36:14I'm sorry this had to happen, Tom.
00:36:24Helen will be wanting to see you.
00:36:26I'm sure she's been waiting for you
00:36:28ever since she saw the Altair come into the harbor last night.
00:36:33Helen, does she watch for my ship?
00:36:35She's always watching for your ship.
00:36:40She's got good news.
00:36:57Is Captain Stone aboard?
00:36:59No, ma'am.
00:36:59He'll be back in an hour or so.
00:37:01He's with Mr. Roberts.
00:37:02You're the new third officer, aren't you?
00:37:04I was.
00:37:05But how did you know?
00:37:07Captain Stone wrote me about you.
00:37:09A long letter, even before he met you.
00:37:11He was most enthusiastic about your training ship record.
00:37:14I know.
00:37:15I'm Helen Roberts, an old friend of the captain.
00:37:18Because of his letters, I feel as if I knew you too, Tom Merriam.
00:37:22How do you do?
00:37:23Where in the world are you going with that bag?
00:37:26Doesn't the Altair sail tomorrow night?
00:37:28She sails without me, Miss Roberts.
00:37:30That sounds serious.
00:37:33While I'm waiting, won't you let me give you a lift?
00:37:35Then you could tell me all about it.
00:37:37No, thank you.
00:37:38That bag will be awfully heavy by the time you reach the hotel.
00:37:42Come along.
00:37:43All right.
00:37:46Let's go.
00:38:13And so you're dreadfully disappointed and dreadfully hurt.
00:38:17The whole world seems to have turned against you just because you made a mistake.
00:38:22I didn't make a mistake.
00:38:23That's almost the captain's voice, Tom.
00:38:26I didn't make a mistake. I couldn't make a mistake. I'm authority.
00:38:31I'm the captain. I'm the third officer.
00:38:35I've heard it all so often, but it's all so wrong.
00:38:39You're just like the captain, Tom.
00:38:42Lonely, austere, bitter, without family or friends.
00:38:47Condemning yourself to a bloodless, ghost-like existence.
00:38:51And in the end, it will be only a ghost ship you'll command.
00:38:55How long do you think I've known the captain, Tom?
00:38:57I don't know.
00:38:59I've known him for fifteen years.
00:39:01For fifteen years, I've tried to give him love instead of loneliness.
00:39:06You mustn't be like him.
00:39:08You've got to embrace warmth and life.
00:39:11A good joke, a pretty girl.
00:39:13I don't know any girls.
00:39:15That's clear enough. But you will.
00:39:17I have a younger sister in San Pedro.
00:39:20She's the secretary for the Dunham Line.
00:39:22She'll meet you on your next trip north.
00:39:25I'll see to that.
00:39:26And if you don't like her, she'll introduce you to other girls.
00:39:29And other young men.
00:39:31Young men who don't even know what the word authority means.
00:39:35I'll see that you don't become another Captain Stone.
00:39:38I'm going to change him, too.
00:39:40If I can now.
00:39:42If I have the right.
00:39:53This is not like you, Will.
00:39:55I've never known you to hold grudges.
00:39:57I don't want him on my ship.
00:40:01People seem to be turning against me.
00:40:04The boy.
00:40:06Some of the crew.
00:40:09I feel their dislike.
00:40:12Their distrust.
00:40:13Oh, nonsense.
00:40:14You're only imagining things.
00:40:16You've worked too hard too long, Will.
00:40:18This boy's down without a second officer standing watches.
00:40:22It's been hard on you.
00:40:23When you get back to the States, have a good checkup.
00:40:26Take a rest.
00:40:28This is my health that I'm worried about.
00:40:32I've lived a lonely life.
00:40:34A hard life.
00:40:36Well, you and Ellen are the only friends I've ever had.
00:40:38All you need is a rest.
00:40:40See a good doctor, just as I've said.
00:40:47You'll see Ellen tonight.
00:40:49Find new interests.
00:40:52There are no new interests.
00:40:55Just authority.
00:40:58Authority.
00:41:11I have something to tell you, Will.
00:41:13That's what Charlie said.
00:41:15I wanted to be here, aboard the Altair, when I told you.
00:41:19I want my rival to hear and feel my triumph.
00:41:23I've always loved your fancies, Ellen.
00:41:26This isn't a fancy.
00:41:28I want the old Altair to know that I'm a free woman.
00:41:32That I can take you from her and keep you from her.
00:41:37You won your case?
00:41:38Yes, he finally gave in.
00:41:40The final papers came through last week.
00:41:43I'm a free woman.
00:41:51I expected a different response, Will.
00:41:57I thought we were both waiting for this.
00:42:00I had waited.
00:42:02I had wanted this.
00:42:05Now there's little I can do or say.
00:42:08I'm afraid.
00:42:10Afraid of me, Will?
00:42:12Of my mind, Ellen.
00:42:14I don't trust it anymore.
00:42:15You're lying.
00:42:16Don't come close to me.
00:42:17Stand there.
00:42:18But, Will, I...
00:42:20I remember Captain Blaker of the Ajax.
00:42:23This was my first ship.
00:42:26I was the mess boy.
00:42:29I watched him lose his mind, little by little.
00:42:32He knew it.
00:42:34Could do nothing about it.
00:42:36It was awful, Ellen.
00:42:37I've never forgotten it.
00:42:40We were run down in a fog off the coast of the Mercer.
00:42:44The Ajax sank like a rock.
00:42:46Blaker went with her.
00:42:48He was lucky.
00:42:49It's only your memory that frightens you.
00:42:52It's more than that.
00:42:53I felt strange.
00:42:57Why, I've done things that I...
00:42:58I couldn't remember doing.
00:43:01I've had moments that I've felt that I was on the verge of losing control.
00:43:08Of doing some terrible, stupid, ugly thing.
00:43:13By this morning, when the boy testified against me, I could barely keep my seat.
00:43:18But...
00:43:22Give me a chance to get over this.
00:43:26This feeling that I don't know myself.
00:43:29That I don't control my thoughts, my actions.
00:43:39You can have all the time in the world.
00:43:43I'll be waiting here for the Altair on her return voyage.
00:43:50I'm a British subject. I am not seeing for you any other heinie.
00:44:01Mr. Merriam, what goes on here? What are you men up to?
00:44:09Are you hurt, Mr. Merriam?
00:44:10This man is my officer from the Altair.
00:44:12He's been hurt. I've got to get him back aboard.
00:44:40Mr. Merriam.
00:44:57Mr. Merriam.
00:44:58The Altair...
00:45:00The Altair...
00:45:03The Altair...
00:45:04That was his first woman.
00:45:04He was haunted, the Altair...
00:45:04Noo...
00:45:06The Altair...
00:45:22Naturally, had I had anything to say about it, I wouldn't be here.
00:45:25Evidently, Billy had the policeman bring me aboard.
00:45:38Of course, sir, I realize I have no right whatsoever to be aboard the Altair.
00:45:43I'll be glad to make arrangements to pay my passage when we reach San Pedro.
00:45:56I don't want to be aboard any more than you want me here, but I can't do anything about it.
00:46:00You can't expect me to swim.
00:46:03That's quite the wrong tone, Miriam.
00:46:05I was just going to say that you'd be my guest on the trip north, that you'll have no duties.
00:46:10We'll do everything we can to make the voyage as comfortable as possible.
00:46:15In fact, Miriam, I'm rather glad that you're on board.
00:46:18You'd give me a chance to prove certain theories of mine.
00:46:22You know, I'm sure that you find them very interesting and instructive.
00:46:26You can learn many things from me.
00:46:28I never doubted that, sir.
00:46:30I'm sure you never doubted it when you told Mr. Roberts that I was a murderer and incompetent.
00:46:34But we'll forget all that, Mr. Miriam.
00:46:37Thank you, Captain.
00:46:39Mr. Miriam, you know, there are some captains who'd hold this against you.
00:46:51Oh, Rayfield.
00:46:52I was wondering if you got me to bed last.
00:47:05Hiya, Sparks.
00:47:06I seem to have gotten myself in kind of...
00:47:08Don't come in here, fella.
00:47:09I don't want to get mixed up in any funny business with you.
00:47:12Look, Sparks, we're friends.
00:47:14I need your help.
00:47:15Now stop kidding and listen to me, will you?
00:47:17Yeah, I'll stop kidding.
00:47:19But as for listening, I tell you I'm dead serious and I don't want to hear a word you have
00:47:23to say.
00:47:24Captain's going to kill me, Sparks.
00:47:25I can see it in his face.
00:47:27I'm not too dumb a guy now, Sparks.
00:47:30I'm not yellow.
00:47:31I'm not hysterical.
00:47:32And I'm telling you he's going to kill me and I need your help.
00:47:35That is hogwash.
00:47:37At least do me one favor.
00:47:38Send a wireless to Miss Roberts in San Sebastian.
00:47:40I can't do that.
00:47:42The cabin's forbidden all wireless unless he personally okays it.
00:47:45Don't you see?

00:48:34I can't do that.
00:48:35I can't do that.
00:48:38I can't do that.
00:55:26Good morning, Mr. Balance.

01:00:17I beg your pardon, sir, but why can't Sparks send the message?
01:00:20The message I'm asking you to send will answer that question.
