00:00The opening of LRT3 should have been a milestone for Shah Alam.
00:05For the first time, the Selangor State Capital is directly connected to the Klang Valley's real network
00:11through five stations, Kejaya, Stadium Shah Alam, Datuk Menteri, UITM Shah Alam, and Section 7.
00:20But transport industry expert Rosli Khan argues that the city has failed to do its part
00:26to make the public transport system tick.
00:30Rosli says many commuters still cannot walk safely or comfortably to the stations
00:35because basic pedestrian infrastructure is missing.
00:39He says this amounts to a failure of first-and-last-mile connectivity,
00:44essential for any successful public transport system.
00:48Rosli argues that if people have to walk on roads, cross dangerous intersections,
00:53or endure long stretches without shade, many will simply continue driving.
00:58With LRT3 announced in 2015, taking 11 years to complete,
01:05Rosli says the state authorities have had ample time to plan proper pedestrian access.
01:11He questions whether there was sufficient coordination between transport agencies
01:16and the Shah Alam City Council, or whether pedestrian facilities were simply overlooked.
01:23According to Rosli, all successful rail systems are built with integrated infrastructure,
01:29including footpaths, covered walkways, safe crossings, cycling lanes, and feeder buses.
01:35He argues that Shah Alam has enough space to build these facilities,
01:40making the lack of pedestrian access a planning failure, rather than a land constraint.
01:47Rosli points out that billions of ringgit have been invested in LRT3
01:51to encourage people to switch from private cars to public transport.
01:57He believes those goals will be harder to achieve if commuters still have to drive to the stations
02:03because walking is inconvenient or unsafe.
02:08He says the MBSA must move quickly to provide the missing pedestrian links.
02:13Failing Shah Alam residents will have no choice but to endure worsening road congestion.
