00:02Speaking on the Morning Edition, Artificial Intelligence to Ethicist, Professor Renee Cummings says,
00:09countries must develop strong governance frameworks that allow them to reap the benefits of artificial intelligence
00:16while safeguarding the rights and privacy of citizens.
00:20So not only is AI this major geopolitical tool at the moment, but it's also a civil rights issue.
00:28It is also a human rights issue. It is also a constitutional issue, as we're seeing now in the United
00:35States and, of course, across the EU and globally.
00:39The challenge is how do we govern something we cannot see? How do we govern something that is changing so
00:46rapidly?
00:47So how do we govern in real time?
00:49The AI ethicist also questions whether users fully understand what happens to the information they share with AI platforms,
00:58warning that greater attention must be paid to how personal information is collected, used and protected.
01:07When people are using something like ChatGPT, I ask, where does your data go?
01:11When you type all of that personal information into an AI tool, who is collecting that data?
01:17Professor Cummings adds that Trinidad and Tobago is uniquely positioned to lead in the region through its Ministry of Artificial
01:26Intelligence,
01:27but says the technology must be deployed strategically to strengthen the country's future.
01:33We are among one of four countries in the world that actually have ministers of AI and have ministries of
01:43AI.
01:43We are among the United Arab Emirates, we're among Canada, and we're among Kazakhstan, and then it's us.
01:50That's the four countries in the world.
01:51So we are already situated at a very strategic place if we are to get it right.
