00:00NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte is in Ankara ahead of a heavily anticipated NATO leaders' summit in the Turkish capital.
00:08Leaders of the 32-member defense alliance are set to discuss a wide range of topics, chief among them the
00:14war in Ukraine and the fragile truce in Iran.
00:17But the main purpose of this gathering is how members can further boost defense spending to meet Trump's 5%
00:23imposed targets and improve their combat posture.
00:27I had a good visit last week with President Trump and we discussed the staggering increase in defense spending by
00:36Europeans and Canadians,
00:37and of course this is because of Putin and Russia and Ukraine, but also because he, President Trump, has been
00:43extremely forceful encouraging us to do this.
00:46Speaking on the eve of the summit, Rutte stressed that the convention aims to take active steps towards achieving those
00:52goals.
00:53Here in Ankara, I expect nations to present clear, concrete and credible plans to reach that 5% goal.
01:02And the evidence we see so far is impressive.
01:06The summit is set to take place on Tuesday and Wednesday and is the first in Turkey since the country
01:11last hosted in 2004 in Istanbul.
