00:01Presiding officer Sen. Cheese Escudero sets the conviction threshold to 16 during the first day
00:07of Vice President Sara Duterte's impeachment trial. The prosecution and defense frame their
00:12narratives for the public on day one of Vice President Sara Duterte's impeachment trial.
00:17Sen. Rodante Marcoleta surrenders to the Sandigan Bayan over his plunder case.
00:22Fuel prices will increase again starting Tuesday, July 7. And Alex Ayala's Wimbledon run comes to
00:28one end as she loses to Italy's Jasmine Paulini.
00:38Senator Cheese Escudero sets the conviction threshold in Vice President Sara Duterte's impeachment trial
00:44to 16. This comes after 12 senators vote in favor to elect Escudero as impeachment presiding officer
00:50on the first day of the trial. Escudero replaced as Senate President Win Gatchalian who would have
00:56presided under the Senate's previous impeachment rules. In a speech following his election the
01:01senator notes the 2000 Supreme Court ruling Bayan v Zamora supports the interpretation that all of
01:06the Senate's 24 members must be taken into account. Despite having only 23 incumbent senators at that time
01:14the court held the charter provides that the Senate shall be composed of 24 senators and should the
01:20Supreme Court who possesses the sole authority to interpret the constitution by virtue of its power
01:26of judicial review render a different ruling on this question other than what the chair has stated.
01:33This court and this representation shall faithfully abide by that ruling.
01:38Out of 24 senators, two are in jail for plunder namely Senators Rodante Marcoleta and Gingoy Estrada
01:44while Senator Bato de la Rosa remains in hiding amid an active ICC warrant. Escudero also orders the
01:51return of Duterte's box of tax records to the BIR. The House prosecution panel previously asked the
01:57impeachment court to open the sealed box containing the tax records of Duterte and her husband,
02:01man Scarpio. Duterte's lawyers said they are in favor of opening the box but only in an executive
02:06session. Meantime Duterte skips the opening of her own impeachment trial.
02:10In accordance with the impeachment rules,
02:14that her appearance be made through counsel. So sa ngayon po,
02:22masabi natin na hindi na siya mag-attend today. She's here through counsel.
02:27The prosecution and defense framed their narratives for the public on day one of
02:31Vice President Sara Duterte's impeachment trial. Lead House Prosecutor Jinky Luistro frames
02:36the proceedings as an issue that matters to the ordinary Filipino.
03:11Luistro sums up the four articles of impeachment, the alleged irregularities in confidential
03:16funds spending, unexplained wealth, alleged bribery and corruption of public officials,
03:20and threats against the life of the president and his family.
03:48She says the four articles of impeachment are four chapters of the same story,
03:53power exercised without accountability. Meantime, Duterte's lead defense counsel,
03:57Sheila Sison, leans on the Filipino people's collective memory in an indirect allusion to
04:02the Marcos family. Because the Filipino people have shown that they never forget.
04:09We, as a nation, never forget. Sison harps on several themes. The vicepresident's electoral mandate.
04:16Whatever one's political persuasion is, the reality is that the prosecution now comes before this
04:22court to remove a vicepresident chosen by an overwhelming number of the electorate. The abuse
04:28of power. That while impeachment is a powerful democratic process to call out corruption and
04:35grave abuse, impeachment can be abused. And reminding the court that the burden of proof
04:40is on the prosecution. And the underlying principle for this burden of proof is simple.
04:46Under our constitution, every accused is presumed innocent until proven otherwise.
04:54Senator Rodante Marcoleta has surrendered and is now in the custody of the Sandigan Bayan for his
04:59plunder case. Marcoleta personally appears before the anti-graft court's third division on Monday,
05:12July 6, where Associate Justice Carl Miranda says the court found probable cause against him and
05:17this three co-accused. The third division has issued an arrest warrant and the whole departure order
05:22against Marcoleta in Frico accused in a plunder case. This over his 75 million peso campaign contributions.
05:28The order was issued shortly before the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
05:33In 2025, Marcoleta declared a net worth of 51 million pesos but spent 112 million
05:39pesos for his senatorial campaign. Marcoleta said he had no poll contributions but he later
05:44confirmed in an interview that he received 75 million pesos in campaign donations.
05:50Pump prices are going up again starting Tuesday, July 7 as oil firms implement another round of fuel
05:56price increases following renewed pressure on diesel and kerosene prices. Energy Secretary Sharon
06:02Garin announces the following permitted price range adjustments for the week of July 7-13.
06:07Gasoline will decrease by up to 1 peso and 75 centavos per liter or increase up to 25 centavos per
06:14liter.
06:14Diesel will have an increase of 1 peso and 57 centavos per liter to 3 pesos and 57 centavos per
06:21liter.
06:21And kerosene prices will increase by 1 peso and 70 centavos to 3 pesos and 70 centavos per liter.
06:28This latest movement follows last week's fuel price increase.
06:33Alex Ayala's dream Wimbledon run comes to an end. Ayala crashes out of the championships after losing her
06:39round of 16 duel with 2024 finalist Jasmine Paulini of Italy at the center court of the
06:44All England club Monday, July 6. Thus, Paulini avenges her loss to Ayala in the Dubai Tennis
06:50Championships in February. Despite the loss, the 21-year-old Ayala makes history for the country
06:55as the first Filipino to reach the second week of a Grand Slam. Ayala beat Mexico's Renata Zarazua in
07:01the first round, eliminated Australia's Maya joint in the second, then dethroned Poland's Iga Sviantek
07:06in the third. She advanced to the fourth round of a major for the first time in her career.
07:11She said Saturday after defeating Sviantek,
07:13For someone who grew up in the Philippines, I went to train with my brother and my grandfather
07:17every day after school with my ruffled socks and my light-up shoes and chubby cheeks. To her, this is
07:22everything. And that's today's wrap. I'm JC Gotinga. Thank you for watching. Click the link below for the
