00:02If you want to see Stone Cold versus The Undertaker, give me a hell yeah!
00:11You've got The Undertaker who's been there for a while, and now you have Stone Cold.
00:18His trajectory is heading straight up.
00:21When the opportunity presented itself, man, he seized it.
00:24If this is the guy, then I'm going to do the best that I can to make him look like
00:29the star that he's going to be.
00:32You see, Austin? Now you already have one foot in the grave.
00:37Competing against The Undertaker, you cannot fail, you cannot falter, and you must perform because he's a war horse.
00:45Oh, my gosh. I've just knocked Steve out.
00:49I let The Undertaker down that night.
00:52Two superstars trying to one-up one another.
00:54It's exactly what Stone Cold Steve Austin and Undertaker did.
00:57Rivalry between these two is unparalleled.
01:00The Undertaker and Stone Cold rivalry, it was the best of the best.
01:05A night that we will never forget.
01:10I am coming to end your career.
01:13I don't know how much more personal it can get.
01:16When two legends collide, the rivalry stays pinned in our minds forever.
01:22This is where we break down the legendary stories behind the greatest rivalries of all time.
01:27I'm Gabriel Iglesias.
01:30And this is WWE Rivals.
01:39Undertaker, you can expect no mercy from Stone Cold Steve Austin.
01:45Undertaker versus the greatest superstar of all time, Stone Cold Steve Austin.
01:50But I might just be biased.
01:51The shirt gave it away.
01:53Oh, this thing?
01:54Oh.
01:56Both Steve Austin and Undertaker, they were really so iconic in their own right as individuals.
02:02But like the moments that they were able to create, they're like bookmarks on the industry.
02:06They had a long history.
02:07Steve and Taker both started in Texas together.
02:10At least got one of their breaks in the sport tutorial.
02:13I had maybe a year head start on my career than Steve.
02:18They were getting ready to make me the Texas heavyweight champion.
02:21And they gave me Steve.
02:23The 6'8 Pundisher of Devastation Incorporated against the new find of the USWA Wrestling School, Steve Williams.
02:32Big, blonde-headed, good-looking guy.
02:34So he figured if he stuck with it, he was going to have a nice career.
02:39When you meet Mark Calloway, dude, about 6'10", 300 pounds, he just had this air about him.
02:45You knew as soon as you met him, he was going to be somebody.
02:48I didn't know that WWE would have the ultimate character for him.
02:53From Death Valley, I give you The Undertaker.
02:59Those slow, methodical movements, the way he carried himself, the composure, everything was by design.
03:08Now, he just got nailed with a tombstone.
03:11He had this aura that, as a kid, I was just intrigued.
03:15Look at his eyes, look at his eyes.
03:18The man is possessed.
03:20I'll never forget when he stuffed the ultimate warrior in a coffin.
03:23They're burning him.
03:25The Undertaker did that.
03:27The Undertaker was just completely unique.
03:31Someone that was so big, but you believed in it.
03:35Unbelievable.
03:36The Undertaker, ladies and gentlemen.
03:40I was intrigued by the character, but by no means did I want to meet him in person or in
03:44a dark alley or anywhere else.
03:46The Undertaker sending chills up and down the spine.
03:50Truly a work of art.
03:52There's nobody that could have pulled off that character like Mark Calloway at all.
03:5824-7, I was The Undertaker.
04:02During appearances, walking through the airport, I lived the gimmick.
04:07You have to have your audience invested in that character.
04:12The Undertaker was our guy.
04:13Like, he was our Iron Man.
04:15He worked hard.
04:16He worked with a crushed orbital bone.
04:18Cracked ribs.
04:20The Undertaker was sort of an adhesion on his face.
04:24Because we needed him.
04:26He would be the guy that had to carry the company in times when we didn't have anything.
04:31We were struggling.
04:33We had lost all of our big talent.
04:36I told you Hulkamania was going to run wild in the WCW, brother.
04:41WCW had opened up their checkbook.
04:43Everybody's taking the money and running.
04:45What in the hell is he doing here?
04:49We're trying to keep afloat with the talent that we had left.
04:54And then Steve come along.
04:57Little did we know, he would become the biggest star probably ever.
05:02I give you the Ringmaster!
05:06I was one of the few who loved the Ringmaster.
05:08You did?
05:09I loved the Ringmaster the second he showed up.
05:11I was like, that sounds cool, Ringmaster.
05:13The Ringmaster has all the tools to go.
05:15Straight to the top.
05:17There was something about him that drew me right away.
05:20This is not the Ringmaster!
05:21This is not the Ringmaster!
05:22This is not the Ringmaster!
05:23He was so different than everybody else.
05:25At the time, too, everybody had a gimmick.
05:27Everybody had some sort of character.
05:29It was kind of outlandish.
05:30And he was just boots, trunks.
05:32Very simple.
05:33Which I thought, well, that's different.
05:35That was always appealing to me.
05:37But, yeah, the Ringmaster thing went away pretty quick.
05:40His peers dubbed him the Ringmaster.
05:42I would suggest to you, from the look on his face and his attitude, knowing him a bit better now,
05:46he's stone cold, if anything.
05:48Steve wasn't content when he was the Ringmaster.
05:51He knew that there was more for him to give.
05:54Steve Austin wasn't really a star.
05:57The King of the Ring happens.
06:00Talk about your songs.
06:01Talk about John 316.
06:04Austin 316 says, I just whipped your ass.
06:12Next day, it was Austin's moment.
06:14This was his moment to elevate himself and get himself where he needed to be.
06:19But he needed the right opponent.
06:21He needed the right rivalry.
06:24He needed The Undertaker.
06:27We're live, ladies and gentlemen, from Green Bay, Wisconsin.
06:30Monday Night Raw.
06:33Stone Cold Steve Austin.
06:35Won it all just last night.
06:38First time I wrestled with The Undertaker.
06:40It was very powerful.
06:41I'm always thinking about what I want to do in my matches.
06:43And so, you know, I'm about to work with Mark.
06:46And I've already hit the Ring.
06:49They hit Mark's music.
06:54Lights go down.
06:55Everybody throws their lighters in the air.
06:57They smoke up the entrance.
06:59He starts coming in.
07:01The greatest phenom in the history of the World Wrestling Federation.
07:07The Undertaker.
07:09And he's doing that slow motion walk that only he can do.
07:13And it was so awe-inspiring and just dramatic.
07:17Like that, I forgot every single thing that I wanted to accomplish in that match.
07:22It's powerful.
07:24Even a man who has ice water in his veins, like Stone Cold Steve Austin, must be feeling a little
07:31antsy.
07:33The Undertaker was the barometer for everything back then.
07:36You know, so you want to push a guy like Stone Cold, and you want to get him to that
07:40level.
07:41Undertaker still is the gatekeeper.
07:42Because they know that he's going to do his job.
07:45The question is, can you do yours?
07:47And so this is a real important thing for Stone Cold.
07:51You can tell that he's getting this push.
07:55You can slow that down if you want.
07:58Or you can say, okay, this guy's got a rocket strapped to his ass.
08:04How can I help him even excel faster?
08:10That's the way that I looked at it.
08:12If this is the guy, then I'm going to do the best that I can to make him look like
08:17the star that he's going to be.
08:19The Undertaker, with Stone Cold Steve Austin, really taking it to the limit.
08:24It's an unbelievable battle.
08:27You can go in there with The Undertaker, and you can fight him, and you can give him hell.
08:32And at the end of the day, whether you lose, you have the respect of that audience, you're going to
08:38be a success.
08:38I think Austin knew how good he was.
08:41Once he got in the ring with someone like The Undertaker, I think everyone else found that out too.
08:45Go! Go down St. Marlena! On their way!
08:48Oh! Oh, did you see that? What in the eye?
08:51The Undertaker is resorted with his qualification victorious!
08:56To have Undertaker not definitively win a match, that says, one, the company believes in this talent.
09:04And two, it says to the crowd, like, wow, Undertaker didn't hit the tombstone and beat this guy.
09:09I want to see more.
09:13It was huge in helping Steve get to the next level.
09:16Make people notice that this guy's going to be a star.
09:19I didn't get beat. I would have beat him had that Goldust come, but that's just the way it goes,
09:24isn't it?
09:24I'll beat him on down the line anyway.
09:27From that point forward, you knew this could be the guy.
09:30But you don't know for sure if he is the guy.
09:32You see guys all the time, you don't know if once they get to that level, is that going to
09:35transcend and go more, or are they going to get engulfed by that main event?
09:40His trajectory is heading straight up, and it's important for me to give him that rub.
09:48When the opportunity presented itself, man, he seized it like nobody.
09:56For some reason, people started caring about me.
10:00The officer said, hey, let's come up with a t-shirt for you.
10:03So I said, okay, let's do the Austin 316, and let's put a skull on the back and carve in
10:08stone coal.
10:10Well, hold off on a skull.
10:12That might be Undertaker's property.
10:14I walked over to Mark and said, hey, man.
10:16I said, the office finally wants to do a t-shirt of me.
10:19I wanted to put a skull on the back, but they kind of feel like that's in your territory.
10:23And if you clear it, I can use the shirt.
10:25But if you shoot it down, I understand.
10:27He goes, yeah, man, go for it.
10:31He didn't have to do that, and he did.
10:34Here he comes, stone cold Steve Austin.
10:38It took him a while to get to the point of being seen by the masses as a main event
10:46superstar.
10:49Facing Bret Hart at WrestleMania 13, and the way in which Steve lost that match.
10:57Austin will not surrender.
10:59He will not submit.
11:01He didn't get pinned, didn't give up, passed out due to the loss of blood.
11:07You always want to prove yourself against the best.
11:11I've never seen anyone so gutsy that he wouldn't submit.
11:15It was very important and necessary for the journey that Stone Cold was about to go on,
11:19and for the Undertaker to get his hands on the WWE Championship.
11:24I mean, he's the guy now.
11:25He was crowned that night.
11:27The dark days of the WWF have begun.
11:31Undertaker at WrestleMania 13 becoming the WWE Champion.
11:35Here is the star that is going to lead us into the next generation.
11:44You're looking at the next WWF Champion, and that's the bottom line.
11:49The Stone Cold Sinsale.
11:53The audience wanted Steve to take those next steps,
11:58and if that meant going through someone as popular as The Undertaker,
12:02that's what the audience wanted.
12:06What will happen when Olsen meets The Undertaker?
12:13I am the World Wrestling Federation Champion.
12:21And as far as Stone Cold Steve Austin goes,
12:27it'll be a cold day in hell before you become champion.
12:34Steve Austin is in the ring with The Undertaker.
12:36That's his championship belt.
12:38They're polar opposite, right?
12:39You've got this one outspoken beer-drinking son of a gun,
12:43and then you've got a man of very few words,
12:45and I loved watching both of them.
12:48You didn't need to have a major angle.
12:51You just had the two toughest badasses
12:55fighting for the grandest prize of them all.
12:59Following WrestleMania 13, Taker and Steve faced off
13:03in their first pay-per-view match, Cold Day in Hell.
13:06Tonight, the WWF title be decided when The Undertaker
13:10takes on the toughest SOB, Stone Cold Steve Austin.
13:15It's such a test to go with The Undertaker.
13:17So I was almost concerned as a fan that this would
13:19kind of send Stone Cold the other way.
13:22What's going to happen out of it?
13:24Austin has said many times,
13:26He's not afraid of the dark,
13:28but you've got to respect the dark side.
13:31This is a big moment.
13:32Is Steve Austin the guy we need to know?
13:36And a main event pay-per-view against The Undertaker
13:38for the championship is the way to find that out.
13:44This is going to be, I think,
13:47one of the more intense WWF championship matches
13:50that maybe any of us have ever seen.
13:55Competing against The Undertaker in the ring
13:58was very, very tough.
13:59Stone Cold Steve Austin attacking The Undertaker
14:02and this match is officially underway.
14:05He's going to get his best.
14:06He always wants to have the best match on the card.
14:09You're going to work your ass off
14:10because he's a war horse.
14:12Both of them want to win the WWF title.
14:17The phenom is being challenged
14:19as we have never seen him challenged.
14:21He did whatever it took at any given occasion.
14:24To win a match,
14:25that dynamic really made it interesting.
14:27What a grueling matchup.
14:30Very intense, very physical.
14:32Either one of them would,
14:33whatever it takes,
14:34to come out of the match
14:35with their hands in the air.
14:37Oh, no!
14:38Who's going?
14:39No!
14:41The Taron!
14:41The Taron!
14:43Goal!
14:45Oh, no!
14:46Who's going?
14:53Sometimes it's not about winning or losing.
14:55It's about how you made the audience feel.
14:58And that's exactly what Stone Cold Steve Austin
15:00was able to do with The Undertaker.
15:03He didn't win that match.
15:05He didn't have to win that match.
15:07He had to win the crowd.
15:08And that's exactly what he did
15:10because the crowd wanted him to win.
15:12Austin!
15:14Goal!
15:18You look at The Undertaker
15:19right now and ask him
15:20who should be the World Wrestling Federation champion,
15:22he'll say Stone Cold Steve Austin
15:23because it's the truth.
15:25The championship should be mine.
15:26It's not.
15:27Will I cry about it?
15:28No.
15:28I'll just drink another beer today.
15:32I think it meant an awful lot
15:33for Steve Austin
15:35to have that opportunity
15:37and for him to feel the confidence
15:40that we as a company had in him.
15:44The audience was really starting to get into
15:47what Stone Cold Steve Austin was delivering.
15:50This arena has erupted
15:52with a mere sight of the Texas Rattlesnake.
15:57Attitude era?
15:59Attitude.
16:00That was Austin.
16:07Here's a guy I don't give a damn.
16:10Double fingers in the air.
16:11You don't like it,
16:13turn the damn channel.
16:13I got no problem with that.
16:15He knew what his character was
16:16and he didn't get much outside of that.
16:19He was always Stone Cold.
16:22Steve Austin was the everyman.
16:25Blue collar.
16:26Drinks beer.
16:28Badass.
16:29And I think that resonated with a lot of the fans.
16:33You look out in the audience,
16:3475% of the merch was Austin 316.
16:39Probably could have donated the money from the wrestling
16:42and just lived very comfortably on selling his merch.
16:47Stone Cold's time has come.
16:48In the dark or in the lights,
16:49you're looking at the next WWF champion,
16:51whether anybody likes him or not.
16:56The Austin era has begun!
17:001998, Steve wins the WWE title at WrestleMania 14.
17:03You know, at that point,
17:04Steve has become the hottest guy
17:06probably in the history of the business.
17:07He put his name on any building in the world.
17:10It can be an armory in Melbourne, Australia.
17:12And we sold that building out.
17:14He was that hot.
17:17I've never seen anything like it.
17:19I haven't seen anything like it since.
17:21Steve's climb helped everybody.
17:25Everybody wanted a piece of that.
17:27That was the competitive nature that made us so good.
17:32No one was bigger than Stone Cold Steve Austin in the 90s.
17:35He was everywhere.
17:38Please welcome Stone Cold Steve Austin.
17:43News, MTV,
17:46any type of pop culture event that was happening,
17:50Stone Cold Steve Austin was there.
17:53Steve was super dialed in on his position
17:56and maintaining his spot.
17:59And the rest of us,
18:00we were always trying to move up that ladder
18:02to either be in that spot
18:05or be in that spot working against Steve.
18:08That was the golden ticket.
18:10They were firing all cylinders.
18:12How do we keep that momentum going?
18:14Well, the next biggest thing they could do
18:16is Austin and take her.
18:19Mancow's Morning Madhouse.
18:20We are here with, certainly,
18:22the wrestler for the next millennium,
18:23Stone Cold Steve Austin.
18:26It's going to happen.
18:27It is destiny.
18:28You versus The Undertaker.
18:30What's your prediction?
18:32Well, hell,
18:33anytime you go into anything,
18:34you've got to believe in yourself,
18:35so I believe I'm going to beat his ass.
18:36But, you know,
18:37I'm sure he would like to think otherwise.
18:38Anyways, you know,
18:39that's a pay-per-view match.
18:42It was incredible
18:44from how business was
18:47to where he took it.
18:50That's what made the product so great.
18:52Yeah.
18:53Stone Cold's the top guy.
18:54But I think I can be the top guy.
18:57There's The Undertaker
18:58on his way to the ring.
19:00The Attitude Era grew out of Stone Cold Steve Austin.
19:03Now it was all about being as cutting as is possible.
19:06A lot of the characters grew out of
19:08trying to fit in
19:10with that shifted paradigm.
19:12Undertaker's a great example of that.
19:14Around this time,
19:16Undertaker's persona on screen
19:18started evolving.
19:20Like, he started cutting promos.
19:21He was getting promos on Austin.
19:23Shortly after my arrival
19:25here in the World Wrestling Federation,
19:27I became the slayer of the dragons.
19:33And as I've been taking care of family business,
19:38Stone Cold Steve Austin
19:40right to the top.
19:45I demand
19:47my shot
19:48at the World Wrestling Federation title.
19:53Stone Cold and Undertaker work well together
19:55because stars are stars.
19:58If you are a fan of a college football team,
20:00you're going to want to watch
20:01that college football team
20:02play against another elite team.
20:04Everybody can have their fans.
20:06Austin,
20:08I came at you like a man
20:10just like I'm going to do
20:12at SummerSlam.
20:14But you see, Austin,
20:16now you already have
20:17one foot in the grave.
20:20Because you see now, boy,
20:23you've done the wrong thing.
20:27You f*** me off.
20:33They were two guys
20:34you always wanted to see.
20:36And you're going to see them
20:37against each other?
20:38I'm clearing the night out
20:39to watch that.
20:41The Undertaker says
20:43that I pissed him off.
20:46Stone Cold Steve Austin
20:47was bored, pissed off.
20:49I'm going to beat his ass
20:51in this ring
20:52to let you know
20:53exactly
20:54what SummerSlam
20:56is going to be like.
20:57What the hell
20:58is this about?
21:00The highway to hell
21:01will see Austin Byrd.
21:05It's not rocket science
21:06when you put
21:07the two biggest stars
21:08in the company
21:09against each other.
21:10We had gotten past
21:12the idea
21:12that it had to be
21:13good guys and bad guys.
21:15We were dealing
21:15in shades of gray
21:16in the Attitude Era.
21:19We didn't care
21:20who the fans
21:22cheered for
21:22or booed for
21:23as long as they
21:24were making noise.
21:26and when you
21:27put those two together
21:28the fans
21:29always made that noise.
21:33It was
21:34a bit of an obvious choice.
21:36I don't think
21:37it was a traditional choice
21:38because both guys
21:39were extremely popular
21:40but at the same time
21:43it was
21:45the best of the best.
21:47they had this magnetic
21:48electric energy
21:49that the audience
21:50wanted to see.
21:51They drew money.
21:52People wanted to watch them.
21:54Man, I remember
21:54the build-up to
21:55SummerSlam in 1998
21:57Madison Square Garden
21:58and they were looking
21:59for a name
22:00to that pay-per-view
22:01and I said,
22:01hey man,
22:02what about Highway to Hell?
22:08I'll never forget
22:09doing those videos
22:10where I yank a guy
22:11out of a taxi cab
22:13and there's people
22:14out there
22:15partying and dancing.
22:16We're going down
22:17these dark alleys
22:18and just tearing up
22:20everything.
22:20It's Taker
22:21looking at the camera
22:23it's me walking
22:23through a lake of fire
22:24and just hyping up
22:27that highway to hell.
22:30I mean,
22:31I remember
22:32it was one of the
22:33first times
22:33that they had
22:35put the wraps
22:36on the buses
22:38in New York City.
22:40It's me
22:41with the Empire State
22:42building in my hand.
22:43It was a really
22:44cool build
22:45to that match.
22:47I was in New York
22:49when this happened.
22:51The electricity
22:52in New York
22:55special time.
23:04The Garden,
23:05New York.
23:06You think about
23:07all the big events
23:08and the big fights
23:10and all the things
23:11that have happened
23:11in the Garden
23:12and now
23:14here you are
23:15main eventing
23:15one of our biggest
23:16pay-per-views,
23:18biggest star
23:19in the business.
23:19You want everything
23:21clicking in
23:22so obviously
23:23there's a lot of pressure.
23:26Anytime you get a chance
23:27to work Madison Square Garden
23:28one of the most
23:29special buildings
23:30that you can work
23:30and go out there
23:32and be the main event
23:32is one of those things
23:34that you strive for.
23:37It's a hot
23:38summer night
23:39in New York City.
23:41Madison Square Garden
23:43has been sold out
23:44for months.
23:46Here we go.
23:47I'll take your
23:48highway to hell
23:48right here, baby.
23:50Right here, baby.
23:52Woo-hoo.
23:53It was the top two
23:54WWE superstars.
23:55It was the biggest
23:56match they could do.
23:58I didn't have cable.
23:59I had to find a way
24:00to watch that match live
24:01so I bothered
24:02my friends' parents
24:02to let me watch it
24:03at their house
24:04just because I had to see it.
24:06It was such a big deal.
24:08The following contents
24:09is for the World Wrestling
24:11Federation Championship.
24:16He is a prideful man.
24:18He is a conscience
24:19of the WWF.
24:21He is ready for war.
24:26No WWF champion
24:28has ever entered
24:29Madison Square Garden
24:30with that kind of ovation.
24:32I literally felt
24:34this building safe.
24:36Every single soul
24:38is on their feet
24:39with anticipation.
24:40They love Stone Cold
24:42Steve Austin.
24:43But a lot of them
24:44love The Undertaker too.
24:46There's nothing better
24:47than this matchup
24:48right now.
24:48You've got the hottest
24:49guy in the business
24:50against one of the
24:51greats of all time
24:53in this business.
24:54It's the only two
24:55that are big enough
24:55to hold this main event.
24:57It's a perfect matchup.
25:01Austin's starting off
25:02very aggressively here.
25:03I don't think Austin
25:04wants to get into
25:04a slugfest
25:05with a man that
25:06outweighs him
25:06about 70 pounds.
25:10I like to work
25:11on the fly.
25:11I like to work
25:12on the feel
25:12of our audience.
25:14Try to put
25:14one on the other
25:15early.
25:16Look at this.
25:16A rattlesnake
25:17strikes back.
25:18Where we were going
25:19I just kind of
25:20like to flow with it.
25:22Oh and I reverse him
25:23at the last minute
25:24and I'm knocked down.
25:25In the course
25:26of the match
25:27I shoot Steve
25:28off into the ropes
25:29and I go for a backdrop
25:32because I'm bent over
25:33and Steve gives me
25:34a boot
25:35and I snap up
25:36so fast
25:37the back of my head
25:38hits him right
25:38in the chin.
25:39Oh I think
25:40they headbutted
25:41each other.
25:41Yeah I do too.
25:42I think Austin
25:42got cracked right
25:43in the head
25:43by the Undertaker.
25:45Oh my gosh.
25:46I just knocked
25:47Steve out.
25:50SummerSlam 1998
25:51highway to hell.
25:52I don't remember
25:53too much about the match.
25:55So at the end
25:55of the match
25:55I get knocked out
25:56for the first time
25:57in my life.
26:01Austin got dinged
26:02I think.
26:02Their heads collided.
26:04I remember watching
26:05it and seeing it happen.
26:06He was probably
26:07in the ring
26:07and the best person
26:08to be in
26:08in that case
26:09considering Undertaker
26:10could probably
26:10bring anything back.
26:12We didn't have
26:12a lot of these
26:13protocols in place
26:14either.
26:14Yeah that was
26:14a different world.
26:15Now this happens
26:16we just stop the match
26:17as a matter of
26:18if it's live on TV.
26:19It's a testament
26:19to what level
26:20they're at.
26:23We had to ad-lib
26:24there for a second
26:25until Steve
26:25got his bearings
26:26back around.
26:28Undertaker left
26:28his feet
26:29often able
26:29to move
26:30out of the way.
26:32I remember
26:33building in a spot.
26:35I said
26:35if anything
26:36happens
26:37if this isn't
26:38going
26:39like we want
26:40it to
26:41I'm going to
26:41put you on the
26:42table
26:43and I'm going
26:44to climb up
26:44to the top rope
26:45and I'm going
26:46to drop a leg
26:47on you
26:47from the top rope
26:49to the announce
26:50table.
26:51I never practiced
26:52it.
26:53I never went
26:53up to the top rope.
26:55Look at this.
26:56Oh no.
26:56Oh no.
26:57And now
26:58here we are
27:00Summer Slam
27:01Madison Square Garden
27:02I've got Steve
27:03on the table
27:04and now
27:04finally
27:05I'm up
27:05on the top rope
27:06and I'm like
27:08holy hell
27:09that's a long
27:10way.
27:11He's seven feet
27:12he's 325
27:14the champion
27:15Austin is
27:16helpless here.
27:17I remember
27:18thinking
27:19because I got
27:20knocked out
27:20I figured
27:21okay maybe
27:21he won't
27:22go through
27:22that
27:22we'll just
27:23kind of
27:23put something
27:24in his place.
27:26and sure
27:27enough I'm
27:27laying there
27:27and as I'm
27:28looking up
27:28I'm thinking
27:29to myself
27:30yep
27:31he's coming
27:32he's going
27:32to drop
27:33that leg.
27:39I land
27:42Steve's fine
27:43I crack
27:44my tailbone
27:47good God
27:48my God
27:49they're broken
27:50in half
27:52but Steve
27:53was good
27:54what's the old
27:54saying
27:55at all costs
27:56protect your
27:57quarterback
28:00my deal
28:01was to lay
28:02there
28:02and be
28:03his target
28:04his deal
28:05was to
28:05drop that
28:06leg
28:06off that
28:06top
28:06turnbuckle
28:07we both
28:08did our
28:08parts
28:08it was a
28:09crash landing
28:10and we
28:10continued
28:11to match
28:15there is no
28:15intimidation
28:16there is no
28:17fear
28:17in either
28:18man
28:19Undertaker
28:20said he was
28:20going to take
28:21what's rightfully
28:22his
28:22he feels
28:23he should
28:23be the
28:23WWF
28:24champion
28:25patented
28:26Undertaker
28:26one minute
28:27they're cheering
28:28for him
28:31the next
28:31minute
28:32now they're
28:32cheering
28:32for me
28:33Undertaker
28:34inviting Austin
28:34in
28:35the WWF
28:36title
28:36hangs in the
28:37balance
28:37here
28:38top slam
28:40Undertaker
28:41back on top
28:42this didn't
28:43work earlier
28:43oh no
28:45did you see
28:47that
28:47Austin with
28:47a low blow
28:49stutter
28:51he got
28:52the stutter
28:53one
28:53two
28:56yes
28:57yes
28:58the rattlesnake
28:59the rattlesnake
29:01Austin wins
29:02Austin wins
29:13the undertaker's
29:14up
29:14he's got
29:14the WWF
29:15title
29:15what's gonna
29:16happen here
29:19what
29:21Undertaker
29:22didn't do that
29:22he didn't do
29:23things
29:24where he was
29:25humanized
29:27he didn't need
29:28to raise his
29:28hand
29:28he didn't need
29:29to shake
29:29his hand
29:30that was like
29:31you're the guy
29:33we've had this
29:34war
29:35he got the
29:36upper hand
29:36and you know
29:37I acknowledged
29:38it
29:39it's a match
29:40that I always
29:40wish would have
29:41been better
29:41I let the
29:42Undertaker
29:43down that
29:43night
29:44because I
29:44didn't pull
29:45my end
29:45of that
29:46match
29:47getting knocked
29:48out and not
29:49being able to
29:49deliver the
29:49goods with
29:50one of the
29:50all-time
29:51greats in
29:51the history
29:52of the
29:52business
29:52still haunts
29:54me to this
29:54day
29:55a guy like
29:56him goes
29:56out there
29:57and gets
29:58concussed
29:58and then you
29:59can't think
30:00clearly out
30:00there and
30:01he's a
30:01thinking man's
30:02wrestler out
30:02there
30:02you can't
30:03help but
30:03wonder what
30:04could have
30:04been if
30:04Steve hadn't
30:05gotten hurt
30:05considering what
30:07they were able
30:07to pull off
30:08but I still
30:08remember that
30:08being a really
30:09good match
30:11my hat's
30:12off to you
30:12you won a
30:13major battle
30:14tonight
30:15but Austin
30:17by no means
30:18did you win
30:19the war
30:19you will look
30:21into the eyes
30:21of the Reaper
30:22and the results
30:23will be much
30:24different
30:26right after
30:27tonight's
30:28rivals
30:29I'm counting
30:30down the
30:30best of
30:30the best
30:31on a new
30:32WWE's
30:32greatest
30:33moments
30:33WWE
30:34superstar
30:34Sunday
30:37Stone Cold
30:40had been
30:41dominating
30:41as a top
30:42star
30:42but Undertaker
30:43was really
30:44giving him
30:44a run
30:44for his
30:44money
30:45and even
30:45out of
30:45SummerSlam
30:46there were
30:46still relatively
30:47both
30:47fan favorites
30:49once the
30:49Undertaker
30:49took a sharp
30:50turn
30:50it just
30:51kicked the
30:51rivalry
30:51to a new
30:52level
30:52you gotta
30:53stack the
30:54deck
30:54against
30:55your baby
30:56face
30:56you know
30:56and that's
30:57tough to do
30:57when that
30:58baby face
30:58is Stone Cold
30:59Steve Halston
31:00I can't believe
31:01it
31:02Kane
31:02and the
31:03Undertaker
31:03arm in arm
31:06Undertaker
31:07and Kane
31:07were always
31:07adversaries
31:08they've heated
31:09rivalry
31:10between
31:11two brothers
31:12with a fiery
31:13past
31:14but then all of a
31:15sudden
31:15they kind of
31:15start working
31:16together
31:16you put Kane
31:17and Undertaker
31:17together as a
31:18team
31:18who can survive
31:20that
31:20the WWE
31:21audience
31:22had always
31:22wanted us
31:23to get
31:23together
31:24that's what
31:24the audience
31:25really wanted
31:25to see
31:26let me break
31:27it down
31:28for you
31:29Austin
31:29you're gonna
31:30defend the
31:31WWF
31:32championship
31:32against
31:33both
31:34the Undertaker
31:35and Kane
31:36in a triple
31:37threat match
31:39that's not fair
31:40but both
31:42those two guys
31:42essentially
31:43against one
31:44guy
31:44it is such
31:45the perfect
31:45scenario that
31:46you need
31:46as a baby
31:47face
31:47that finally
31:48he's fighting
31:49that uphill
31:49battle
31:49yeah
31:50two on one
31:51and the two
31:51have to be
31:52the fucking
31:53monsters
31:54yeah
31:54the two
31:55are seven
31:56foot tall
31:56monsters
31:57fighting hell
31:58he's literally
31:58fighting hell
32:00that's what you do
32:01when you have
32:01such a strong
32:02hero
32:04you give him
32:05dragons to slay
32:06in my view
32:07no WWF
32:08champion
32:09has ever had
32:10the deck
32:10stacked against
32:11him
32:11the stone
32:11close
32:12Steve Austin
32:12has
32:17these two guys
32:18that are both
32:196'10
32:19300
32:21two guys
32:22like that
32:23with that
32:23mystique
32:24about each
32:24one of them
32:26that's something
32:26that's just
32:27straight out
32:27of a comic
32:28book
32:28here's these
32:29two larger
32:30than life
32:30guys
32:31because they
32:31are larger
32:32than life
32:32it was awesome
32:34can you imagine
32:35the exhaustion
32:36that Austin
32:37must be experiencing
32:38Steve is on
32:39this incredible run
32:40so it was always
32:41hard to
32:42figure out
32:43ooh
32:44what might
32:44happen here
32:45here we go
32:51the Undertaker
32:53and Kane
32:53that's gotta be
32:54they got it
32:55Austin has lost
32:56the title
32:57Austin has lost
32:58the title
33:01Austin has lost
33:02the title
33:02but who is
33:03the champion
33:04is it the
33:05Undertaker
33:06or is it Kane
33:08coming off
33:09of the double
33:09pin controversy
33:10we're now at
33:11Monday Night Raw
33:12and Vince McMahon
33:14is in the ring
33:16Undertaker
33:16both you
33:17and Kane
33:18deserve to be
33:21the WWF champion
33:22and who comes
33:23to the ring
33:25there's Austin
33:26there's Austin
33:27Austin and the Zamboni
33:30there's some things
33:31that you can't predict
33:31and that's definitely
33:32not one of them
33:34my god
33:34he's gonna run
33:35right to the time crowd
33:36look out
33:37he'll run it over
33:39the craziest part
33:40is when he
33:40drives up the Zamboni
33:42right up to the ring
33:42and he hits the ring
33:44you see the ring
33:45shift
33:45which
33:45knowing what we know
33:47could have just
33:47sent everything crashing
33:57business was so
33:59strong
34:00and so good
34:01there was no stunt
34:02that was completely
34:03out of the question
34:05and the people
34:06just absolutely
34:07ate it up
34:18it was the attitude
34:19there
34:19everything went
34:21it allowed me to
34:22expand my character
34:36you really saw
34:37a different side
34:39of the undertaker
34:40you got to see
34:42just how evil
34:43and how sadistic
34:44he actually could be
34:46I think he had to
34:47kick it up
34:48to the next year
34:49because that's
34:50what we were all
34:50doing
34:52Taker was never
34:53afraid to try
34:53something different
34:54we were pushing
34:56the envelope
34:56many edges
34:57Stone Cold
34:58Steve Austin
34:59he was hitting
34:59the head
35:00with a shovel
35:00by the undertaker
35:01last Monday night
35:02and sustained
35:03a concussion
35:04who remembers
35:05undertaker
35:05kidnapping
35:06Stone Cold
35:07anybody
35:08just me
35:13this was the
35:14attitude era
35:14and all the
35:15crazy stuff was
35:16going on
35:16and this was
35:17still like
35:17really over the
35:18top
35:18yeah
35:19hey wait
35:20my god
35:21that's the
35:21undertaker
35:22the undertaker
35:22smothering Austin
35:23Paul Bear
35:24and the
35:24undertaker
35:25are Austin's
35:26home
35:26it's home
35:27for god's
35:28sakes
35:28what is going
35:29on here
35:30we did some
35:31crazy crazy
35:32stuff back
35:33and this was
35:34part of it
35:34when undertaker
35:35all of a sudden
35:35turns to a
35:36side that is
35:37past demonic
35:38this
35:40is where you
35:41get off
35:41this
35:43is your
35:43last ride
35:46they're Stone Cold
35:47Steve Austin
35:47and by god
35:48you know
35:49that he's got
35:50some payback
35:50on his mind
35:51does the
35:52rattlesnake
35:53outside of the
35:54arena
35:54how many crimes
35:55do you think
35:56were committed
35:56in this rivalry
35:58you got all
35:59this crazy
35:59stuff going on
36:00completely blows
36:01any common sense
36:02away
36:02but it was
36:03entertaining
36:03and people
36:05loved every
36:05bit of it
36:06they suspended
36:07belief because
36:07they wanted to
36:08because the
36:08characters were
36:09that good
36:10undertaker
36:11you talk about
36:13sacrificing me
36:14about wanting
36:16my soul
36:17at rock bottom
36:19in a very
36:20alive match
36:21the stakes
36:22are stacked up
36:23higher than
36:24they've ever been
36:24for Stone Cold
36:25Steve Austin
36:28someone
36:28either the
36:29undertaker
36:30or Stone Cold
36:31Steve Austin
36:32will be
36:33buried alive
36:34tonight
36:35if you're an
36:36undertaker
36:36you want to
36:37bury people
36:39if you have an
36:40opportunity to bury
36:40someone alive
36:41why not
36:43so a buried alive
36:44match is a match
36:45in which the only
36:46way to win
36:47is to take your
36:49opponent
36:50from the ring
36:52to a cemetery
36:54plot
36:54it happens to be
36:56constructed in the
36:57arena
36:58all you have to do
36:59is get your opponent
37:00into that hole
37:02then you put the
37:03dirt on your
37:04opponent
37:04hence
37:06burying them
37:07alive
37:08this match
37:09not for careers
37:10but for lives
37:12it's hard for
37:13your audience
37:15to figure out
37:16what's going to
37:17happen here
37:17right
37:17this is a
37:18married alive
37:18match
37:19which is the
37:19undertaker's
37:20match
37:20but now
37:21it's a
37:21stone cold
37:22and he's
37:22the baddest
37:23dude here
37:23it really
37:24added a lot
37:25of intrigue
37:27here we go
37:28it was another
37:29one of those
37:30physical matches
37:31this rivalry
37:32between these two
37:33is unparalleled
37:34unmatched
37:35but never
37:36ever
37:36a match
37:37like this
37:37between these
37:38two men
37:39undertaker
37:39takes a lot
37:40of pride
37:40in being able
37:41to go
37:42to the
37:42nth degree
37:43so you've got
37:44to grind
37:45away at this
37:45guy
37:46you've got
37:46to chase
37:46him down
37:47and when you
37:47get on him
37:48you better
37:48stay on him
37:54those are
37:55tough matches
37:56you had to
37:57work your ass
37:58off to try
37:58to get that
37:59crowd
37:59where you
38:00wanted them
38:00now Austin
38:01climbs that
38:02mound of dirt
38:02some ten feet
38:03high
38:04it is a very
38:08physical endeavor
38:09if you imagine
38:09fighting in your
38:10own grave
38:12it was like
38:13something out of
38:14a monster movie
38:14a really good
38:16monster movie
38:17and Stone Cold
38:18is in the grave
38:19that should be it
38:21Stone Cold
38:22desperately
38:23desperately
38:24trying to make
38:24his way out
38:28Austin
38:31and Stone Cold
38:32with a wheelbarrow
38:33full of dirt
38:34the Undertaker
38:35is out cold
38:36in the grave
38:37one thing we learned
38:38in the first
38:39Barrier to Live
38:39match is that
38:40six guys with a
38:41shovel
38:41cannot fill a grave
38:42before the pay-per-view
38:43ends
38:44so we figure
38:46we gotta do
38:46something else
38:47and there's a
38:48back on me
38:48backed into the
38:49arena
38:49it's Stone Cold
38:50oh my god
38:53the Undertaker
38:54is being buried
38:55alive
38:57for being my
38:58match
38:58I didn't win
38:59a lot of those
39:00those matches
39:01didn't turn out
39:01well for me
39:07Stone Cold
39:08has buried
39:09the Undertaker
39:10alive
39:14it's kind of
39:14a way to put
39:15that exclamation
39:16point on the
39:17end of a rivalry
39:18this rivalry
39:19which has been
39:20built for months
39:21it had to come
39:21to this
39:22it had to end
39:22somewhere
39:24in the Attitude
39:25era
39:25where a lot of
39:26it was throwing
39:26stuff at the wall
39:27seeing what would
39:28stick
39:28the reason I
39:29think Austin
39:29and Undertaker
39:30can hold up
39:31is because of
39:32those dynamic
39:32personalities
39:33and how great
39:33they both were
39:34in the ring
39:36when you take
39:37Stone Cold
39:37and Undertaker
39:38two top guys
39:40that everybody
39:40wanted to see
39:41go head to head
39:41no matter what
39:42their personas
39:42were at the time
39:43that was a show
39:45you were not
39:45going to miss
39:47they always find
39:48a way to get
39:48back to each
39:49other
39:49they would
39:50non-stop
39:50creating memories
39:52and moments
39:52for fans
39:53forever
39:57as a fan
39:58all I remember
39:59now
39:59isn't the
40:00matches
40:01it's the
40:01moments
40:01and that's
40:02all that matters
40:02in our industry
40:03is those moments
40:04wait a minute
40:05it's the
40:06Undertaker
40:06Undertaker
40:07called Austin
40:08in midair
40:08joke slam
40:12breathing down
40:13our necks
40:13they're breathing
40:14down
40:18we're much
40:20friendlier
40:20now
40:21we were friendly
40:22but now
40:23we're in
40:24completely
40:24different places
40:25it seems like
40:26everything passed
40:27by so fast
40:29I said that
40:30earlier today
40:30you get to
40:31look back
40:32at the times
40:33and you talk
40:33about things
40:34and now
40:35we can sit
40:35back
40:36and we can
40:37laugh at
40:37ourselves
40:38next thing I
40:39know
40:39I'm laying
40:40on the announce
40:41table
40:41and you're
40:41coming off
40:42with the
40:42big leg
40:42and I'm
40:43thinking
40:43I guess
40:44you're still
40:44going to do
40:45the spot
40:50I just thought
40:52yeah I can
40:52make that
40:53and I never
40:54went out
40:54I just said
40:55I can make
40:55that
40:56and I got up
40:57there and I
40:57was like
40:57oh
40:59there ain't no
41:00coming
41:00you can't
41:02change your
41:02mind
41:02I'm like
41:03nah
41:03I think
41:04they always
41:04hit it off
41:05there are two
41:06Texas boys
41:06who love
41:07hunting
41:07love fishing
41:08love the
41:09outdoors
41:09and they
41:10just clicked
41:10on that
41:11level
41:12it's good
41:13to reminisce
41:14and being
41:15two good
41:15old boys
41:16from Texas
41:17that just
41:17makes it
41:18that much
41:18better
41:20they both
41:21brought out
41:21the best
41:21from each
41:22other
41:23decades
41:23later
41:24we're still
41:24talking about
41:25their relevance
41:25and the way
41:26that they
41:26were able
41:27to elevate
41:27each other
41:28elevate themselves
41:29and elevate
41:30the entire
41:30industry
41:34when you talk
41:35about the
41:36greatest
41:36professional
41:37wrestlers of
41:38all time
41:38throw out
41:39world championships
41:40it doesn't
41:40even matter
41:42he is up there
41:44with the best
41:45of the best
41:47I look at him
41:48as one of my
41:48peers
41:49and I consider
41:50him to be
41:50one of the
41:50goats
41:53I watch
41:54Steve
41:55take a
41:55horrible gimmick
41:56and turn it
41:57into
41:58the biggest
41:59name
41:59in the world
42:00of professional
42:01wrestling
42:03he's still
42:05incredibly relevant
42:07it was always fun
42:08to work with Steve
42:08I'm very grateful
42:10for it
