Trump hails US, blasts 'communists' in 250th anniversary speech

US President Donald Trump hails America on its 250th birthday as the "crowning achievement" of human history, even as he renews his attack on domestic opponents he branded communists. The speech was delayed by several hours when storms forced the temporary evacuation of crowds in Washington.

00:00No people have done more good, shown more courage, made more progress, righted more injustice, or achieved more greatness than
00:09you, the American people.
00:12For 250 years, the United States of America has been the hope, the promise, the light, and the glory among
00:20all of the nations of the world.
00:22All over the world, they try and be like us, nobody can be like us, and with God's help, we
00:28will always be this or even better.
00:32These were the stars and stripes that flew triumphant when the British waved the white flag of surrender at Yorktown.
00:41That was a big surrender, nobody thought that was possible.
00:45They were the greatest power of the world, and they surrendered, and that was the beginning.
00:49Ever since, the entire world has been on notice that Americans will never let anyone take our freedom away.
00:57Won't happen.
00:59Unlike so many others in the world, in this country, we have freedom of speech, freedom of religion, equal justice
01:07under the law, although I wasn't treated that well, but we won't get into that.
01:13And the right to keep and bear arms.
01:23And for the almost six years that I was president, I guarded very, very powerfully your Second Amendment, and they
01:32didn't do a thing to it, and it was not easy.
01:36But we use it, and we've had tremendous success.
01:40You look at Venezuela, you look at Iran, we wiped it out, wiped out their military.
01:46Americans crossed the Great Plains, scaled the Rockies, tamed, well, they just tamed the wilderness and conquered the frontier and
01:55built the empire.
02:00Our warriors did not fight communism on battlefields across the world, only to have that menace rear its ugly head
02:08right back here in America.
02:10We're not going to let it happen.
02:11And as we can see here tonight, after 250 years, the spirit of 1776 still lives within us all.
02:21It still roars in the hearts of our nation's capital.
02:25It still burns in the heart of every patriot, thunders through every city and town, and it still lights the
02:31entire world with the glow of American liberty.
02:35And there is nothing like that at 250 years old, we may be the oldest constitutional republic on earth, but
02:45our country is just getting started because the best is yet to come.
03:20We're not going to let it happen.
