July 4 celebrations in D.C. were dramatically disrupted after severe thunderstorms forced a mass evacuation of the National Mall during America's historic 250th Independence Day celebration. Thousands rushed for shelter as lightning and powerful winds delayed President Donald Trump's highly anticipated address before the event eventually resumed with a spectacular fireworks finale.

00:13America turned 2.50 on Saturday, and Mother Nature crashed the party.
00:18It was supposed to be one of the biggest Independence Day celebrations in U.S. history.
00:23Military flyovers, live performances, a massive fireworks show,
00:27and a speech from President Trump to cap off the nation's 250th birthday.
00:33Thousands packed the National Mall. The mood? Electric.
00:37Then, the sky turned dark.
00:39Just before 7 p.m., a severe thunderstorm slammed into the D.C. region,
00:44and officials weren't messing around.
00:46Seek shelter immediately. Do not wait.
00:49That was the actual warning from D.C.'s Homeland Security Agency,
00:52blasted out on social media as lightning and high winds swept across the open grounds.
00:58Within minutes, one of the most packed places in America emptied out.
01:03National Guard troops and police helped move thousands of people into museums and federal buildings.
01:09The mall, built for a quarter million people, went nearly silent.
01:23President Trump was supposed to speak at 9.45 that night.
01:27Instead, he was watching the same storm as everyone else.
01:30But he wasn't canceling.
01:32In a post online, Trump said storms bring luck to big occasions,
01:36and promised the show would go on, even if it meant pushing things deep into the night.
01:41And that's exactly what happened.
01:44Around 9.45 p.m., the gates reopened.
01:47Crowds streamed back onto the mall.
01:49And a few hours later than planned, Trump finally took the stage,
01:53delivering his address around 11 p.m.
01:56Then came the payoff.
01:57Fireworks organizers billed as one of the largest displays in D.C.'s history,
02:02lighting up a sky that just hours earlier had sent everyone running for cover.
02:07And this wasn't an isolated hiccup.
02:09Earlier that same day, D.C.'s traditional Independence Day parade was scrapped entirely,
02:15not for storms, but for dangerous heat.
02:18Cities up and down the East Coast dealt with their own weather-related delays and cancellations.
02:24It was a 4th of July defined as much by the weather as by the celebration itself.
02:29Storms delayed it.
02:30Heat disrupted it.
02:32But America's 250th birthday party still ended in fireworks.
02:36Sometimes the best stories come with a little chaos first.
