00:00.
00:10Lobster's done.
00:12Everybody relaxes a little bit.
00:14Hey, buddy.
00:15Can't wash your beard.
00:17Chill out on the beach and have fires and roast marshmallows.
00:20Fans burn better than the wind.
00:25The kids play.
00:27Hey, Stephen, did you find a pot of gold?
00:29Uh, no, there's no gold.
00:31A little apricorn running back now, but no gold.
00:36People can get together and recap everything that happened.
00:40How'd your lobster go?
00:41Actually ended up being a pretty cool season.
00:44Worked hard for it.
00:50Lobster season's a grind.
00:52It's been a long couple months.
00:54Rain, rain, rain.
00:55You know, it's six days a week
00:57and all kinds of weather.
00:59Oh, you get no rest.
01:01Oh, freezing my ass off.
01:03Oh, my body feels like shit.
01:06Oh, you .
01:10The crew, the guys, everyone's beaten and worn
01:14after a season like this.
01:19Nine weeks of stress, of worrying about catches
01:22and money and costs.
01:24Is that the other billy?
01:25Yes.
01:30This is the best fleet of traps I've ever had.
01:32Yeah?
01:33But the end of lobster doesn't mean the end of fishing
01:36for everybody.
01:37There's some other fisheries coming up.
01:39Oh, I want to show you this boom here, Tarsip.
01:41Got to ease it.
01:43Rock crab season's starting,
01:45and got a bit of work to do to get ready.
01:46Get ready for fishing.
01:48I've got the lobster done,
01:50and now I've got to pound up the halibut
01:52and pound up the tuna.
01:53There, that's ready.
01:54People are looking at the winter
01:56when there's no money coming back in.
01:59People still want to fish as much as they can.
02:01Okay.
02:02Let's go, that's it.
02:15Run a little behind here.
02:17It's the start of rock crab fishing,
02:20and Captain Steve Burke is antsy to get going.
02:24Then we're off.
02:27He's fished rock crab for five years,
02:29but this season will be his most ambitious ever.
02:34Bought another license,
02:35which I don't know if it's a good move or not.
02:37Hope I didn't bite off more than I could chew.
02:39We got around 120,000 pounds of rock crab to catch this year,
02:42which is twice as much as last year.
02:44Hope for the best.
02:47To keep costs down,
02:49every trip needs to count.
02:51It cost me almost like 2,000 bucks to make a trip now
02:53with my man and bait and fuel,
02:55so I can't make too many trips for nothing.
02:57I'm gonna make some money trips.
02:59Hey, get ready, boys.
03:02Let's put Alex on the boom there first
03:04where he's got more experience.
03:05Carson's gonna be on the block,
03:07and Jesse's gonna be on the lookout for small crab
03:09and bait bags.
03:13Where's the gaff do?
03:16Line, line, line.
03:19Where'd the gaff go?
03:22No.
03:24Oh, no.
03:26Steve, no gaff.
03:28Oh, .
03:29Gaff all going.
03:31But already there's a problem.
03:33The gaff is nowhere to be found.
03:36Oh, .
03:37You can't get your day started without the gaff.
03:39You need the gaff to catch the bullies.
03:40You don't have a gaff.
03:41You can't do nothing.
03:43What, what, what, what, what, what?
03:46Yeah, it's gone.
03:48Nothing's over.
03:49It just disappeared.
03:52The bus went overboard.
03:55.
03:58I have to go back.
04:01Got no choice.
04:02You gotta go back short and get a gaff.
04:06All the way back.
04:07Now we're back again, so that's three hours wasted.
04:10Some days you just feel like pulling your hair out and screaming, but it's pretty silly, I guess.
04:16You just gotta suck it up and keep going.
04:24All right, only you touch the gaff.
04:28Don't touch it.
04:32There goes an hour and a hundred bucks a few.
04:48Oh, that's a weird splash that done, Kevin.
04:54Captain Adam is chasing another summer fishery.
04:57Might get lucky today.
04:59He's hoping to land some tuna with brother Kevin and nephew Liam.
05:04I'm really excited to start tuna this year, not seeing where they're so close to the islands now.
05:09We're setting to get these tuna real fast.
05:11They gotta get to the Japanese market before the holiday.
05:16Keep your eye out.
05:18If you get a big fish and the demand's high, you know, you can score pretty good in the price.
05:24Tuna prices are at their peak leading up to Japan's biggest national holiday.
05:29The brothers are eager to cash in and grab a year-end bonus before fishing's done on the Maggies.
05:35You could have a tuna, like, worth $20,000.
05:39Don't make sure the line stays out.
05:41What a fish.
05:42Last summer, Adam caught two massive tuna in just a few trips.
05:47Watch the peak.
05:48Oh, man.
05:49Quickly turning a break-even year into a profitable one.
05:53249 kilos.
05:57I just want to know if there's tuna here or not.
05:59This year, Adam and Kevin have four licenses between them
06:03and are hoping to land one tuna every trip.
06:07You can sail around the Gulf looking for them and trying to fish them in that sometimes,
06:12especially with my boat.
06:13It costs a lot of money to go some miles, so...
06:20Oh, there they are, busting right here, guys, right here.
06:22Oh, I see them.
06:44Mackerel.
06:47It's not gonna work here.
06:49Oh, my God.
06:56You need that bait on the hook quick and just fire it over.
07:00Come on, Liam. Time is critical.
07:03But Liam, it's just not happening.
07:06Hold on with two hands securely.
07:07I was trying to pass them to you.
07:10Well, Tuna's one of the fastest fish in the sea.
07:13They can be here one second and gone the next.
07:15So you got to be on the ball.
07:17Come on, Jim.
07:29I'm gonna pull you this shitload of time to get 120,000 pounds.
07:33Back closer to shore, the crew of Liam's Legacy
07:36is making up for this morning's false start.
07:40Oh, boy.
07:44That's what I like it.
07:46That's what we're looking for.
07:48This year's more of a challenge
07:49because I went and bought another license this winter.
07:53Over half a million dollars
07:54for another 60,000 pounds of rock crab.
07:57I'm sure it's a gamble.
07:59But I like fishing them.
08:00They're pretty much my favorite fishery.
08:05Get it in there.
08:07There you go.
08:09Give me a hand, Carson.
08:11Shouldering most of the workload is Steve's young cousin,
08:1415-year-old Carson Chevery.
08:18Alex is good here.
08:19He's pushing Carson and making him faster.
08:22Carson just graduated,
08:24and he's really interested in fishing.
08:25I'm pretty excited to have him around.
08:27Steve brought veteran deck boss Alex in today
08:30to teach Carson how to run the holler.
08:33You want to give Carson the option.
08:35I'm hoping he'll step up this year and use it.
08:38There's no traps left here.
08:40Let's do it.
08:41Let's do it.
08:42Running the holler brings a lot more responsibility
08:45and a constant threat of danger.
08:48Good.
08:50Ah!
08:53What happened, Alex?
08:55Oh!
09:01What happened?
09:03I hit my back and hit my washboard.
09:04Oh!
09:06On Liam's legacy,
09:07a brutal fall has injured veteran deck boss Alex.
09:11Carson, you're going to use the holler.
09:13Huh?
09:14He's got to get used to it.
09:15Now, 15-year-old Carson
09:18will have to run the most dangerous machine on the boat
09:21a lot earlier than anticipated.
09:24It's quite a bit different from lobster
09:26because there's a lot more buoys,
09:29and it's a lot faster pace.
09:31Always make sure his finger's away from that roller
09:33before he turned the holler on, huh?
09:35I'm just hoping that Carson learns from Alex a bit.
09:37Getting onto it, bud.
09:39I'll just get everything down pretty pat.
09:41Ah!
09:42Oh!
09:43Oh!
09:44Easy!
09:46Easy, easy!
09:53Carson's trying to use the holler.
09:54I was trying to turn it,
09:56and then the next thing you know,
09:57blue line is out.
10:00First attempt didn't go well!
10:03After I get the hang of it,
10:04I'll be a lot more confident with it.
10:06Hopefully not too confident
10:07because it's a dangerous job.
10:11Keep at it, Carson.
10:17Easy.
10:19Find that some touchy, I don't like it.
10:21You get used to it, though.
10:23Normally, to be a good deckhand,
10:25you have to run the holler,
10:26so hopefully you'll pick it up.
10:28Watch your feet.
10:34Put your hand like this.
10:35Okay, there.
10:38It's not your fault,
10:39it's just handles, touch it.
10:44All right, Alex,
10:44I'm shipping you back here.
10:49Carson has had enough.
10:51He gives control of the holler
10:53back to Alex.
10:57Are you going to holler no more, Carson, or what?
10:59What?
10:59Are you going to holler no more?
11:02I find too much responsibility.
11:05I don't know what's going on there.
11:07Are you nervous, or...?
11:09Find a way to touch me,
11:10I don't like it.
11:10I feel like I'm going to take someone out.
11:11I thought you were going to be the holler man.
11:14Carson kind of left me down there, too.
11:16I thought you were going to be the holler man,
11:17and there's too much responsibility for him.
11:20Right now, it's pretty scary looking.
11:22Alex is leaving.
11:23Can't use it today.
11:25Never going to be able to use it.
11:32Whoa, baby!
11:35Action time, boys!
11:37Woo-hoo!
11:39Turn your boat!
11:39Turn your boat!
11:41To the north, Adam and Kevin
11:43are finally seeing signs of life.
11:46They are up ahead of us!
11:47The waters are teeming with tuna.
11:52We didn't grab it yet!
11:54No!
12:01Oh, we're hooked up.
12:05Something there.
12:09Something happened there.
12:11Something happened there.
12:12Oh, the knackle's gone.
12:14Take down.
12:15What does that mean?
12:17Just grabbed it.
12:19A lot of times you'll get, like,
12:22a tuna spitting the hook.
12:23We call it spitting the hook.
12:25So he grabs it, but it doesn't, uh, hook him.
12:29Uh, yeah.
12:29We got pretty close, but...
12:31I missed him.
12:35That was a nice chance to get hooked.
12:39With daylight diminishing,
12:41they may have just missed out
12:43on their best chance of the day.
12:45So I'm not pissed off,
12:47and just, you're starting to get a little frustrating,
12:49and just wondering if you're doing anything wrong.
12:52We had one take our mackerel today,
12:55and...
12:55Ah, a little discouraging.
12:58I guess this is gonna call quits on this day, Jeff.
13:02I hate coming in the end, dude.
13:06There's just 24 hours left
13:08to get top dollar
13:10from the lucrative Japanese market.
13:12This is the best time of year right now
13:14to get a good price on our fish.
13:16You know, we never got a tuna today,
13:19but...
13:19we'll get one tomorrow.
13:21Fingers crossed.
13:39Wasn't calling for this.
13:42So we got wind and strong tide.
13:46Howling winds and a brutal riptide
13:49marked the start of a high-stakes day
13:51for Captain Steve Burke and his crew.
13:55All right, we're gonna get put to the test today.
13:58Carson's getting thrown into the deep end,
14:01taking lead control of the deadly hydraulic holler.
14:05Let's see what he can do.
14:08Showed up this morning on his first day on the holler.
14:11Probably the shittiest day so far.
14:14We want something down.
14:16Yeah.
14:18We're gonna get out of here.
14:20We got some all-ass wind here,
14:22probably blowing about 20, 25, I guess.
14:26Carson's time to shine.
14:28It's time to step it up.
14:31Watch out, boys.
14:35Today's my first full day on the holler for a rock crab.
14:39And, uh, it's the choppiest day we had yet,
14:41so I'm a little bit nervous.
14:43Hey.
14:44This one's gonna be tight, too.
14:46I already see the buoy drinking the f*** underwater.
14:58What was that, man?
15:00The buoy was right under.
15:02Well, the tide is strong.
15:03We've got some buoys down.
15:05The buoys are all underwater.
15:07F***.
15:08What a day this is gonna be.
15:16You got it?
15:18It's a fight to wrench the buoys free from the powerful currents.
15:22There we go.
15:26Good.
15:30There we go.
15:31Here's some crab.
15:33Good, but I told him you go the whole day,
15:36he would not miss buoys.
15:37I suppose it's a little tight, and it'll chop you out in dirt,
15:41so no excuses, but hopefully you don't miss any more.
15:48Good trap.
15:55Okay, keep all of them on.
16:01Oh, we got him!
16:04Oh, he's tight there!
16:06Back up!
16:06Back up!
16:20Good, he's on his toes this morning.
16:22Coming up here.
16:26Holy s***, look at this one!
16:28There he was!
16:29Yep!
16:31Garfin's doing good here.
16:32Down there.
16:33Yep!
16:35Getting a good handle on the boom.
16:37It's a little bit stiff there.
16:38I think he needs some grease, but it should be good overall.
16:42Try not to disappoint Steve.
16:44I expect these ones to do better.
16:44It should be good today.
16:58Kids!
16:59Come on, everybody over here!
17:02Come on, you got a job to do!
17:05We're going to pick up the buoys that got cut off,
17:08like during the fishing season and stuff.
17:10This one's full of sand.
17:13An old shoe!
17:16That's a really nice shoe!
17:19Nancy, look what I found!
17:22You know what?
17:23We'll put it on Facebook and we'll find out who's lost their gaff over.
17:28Good find!
17:30You guys are great beachcombers.
17:37Let's go!
17:41Let's go!
17:42Let's go!
17:43Let's go!
17:44Far offshore, Nancy's brothers Adam and Kevin are mounting a high-stakes hunt for a giant bluefin tuna.
17:51I'm just going to look here where I hooked a couple fish here last year.
17:56An approaching Japanese holiday has triggered a spike in demand, and the Clarks are desperate to cash in.
18:03This is the best time of year for the demand, so you can't miss it.
18:08If they can land one before sundown, it could bring in $15 a pound.
18:14If we don't get it in time for the market, it could drop as low as, you know, $6 or
18:19$7, so...
18:20We can try here for a little bit, Kev, huh?
18:22Okay, yep.
18:25I'm getting, like, all those little scattered birds all the way down there.
18:29Well, I like birds to tell me where the tuna is.
18:32Birds often gather near schools of tuna, attracted to the smaller fish driven to the surface by the apex predators.
18:40When the tuna dries the bait up to the surface, the gannets are there feeding on it as well.
18:45What was the bait there?
18:48A block of a heron or something down here, Kevin.
18:51The sonar confirms it.
18:54There's a cloud of bait fish beneath and tuna nearby.
18:58Chance today to get a fish.
18:59If we don't get them today, we're going to miss the market, so, you know, hopefully we have some luck
19:04out here today.
19:05For their make-or-break mission, Adam and Kevin have brought out their father, Sidney.
19:11I don't get to see Dad much, like, or spend time with him fishing anymore.
19:16It's a good time to get us all together.
19:21I like to see a great big splash out there.
19:24Adam's usually the positive one, but then again, I got Dad, who's usually the negative one, so I'm going to
19:30try to be the guy in the middle.
19:32So, hopefully, fingers crossed.
19:35Oh, look at that.
19:37Not much bait around. It's impossible that tuna's not around.
19:44Oh, tuna. American tuna, Dad. American tuna.
19:50Finally, the tell-tale arc of a school of tuna.
20:00Booktop, Adam!
20:03Adam!
20:04Yeah!
20:05Coming!
20:09Whoa!
20:10What was that?
20:11Tuna's on the end!
20:13Oh, that one.
20:14Whoa!
20:16Shark!
20:17Mmm!
20:19Whoa!
20:21Oh!
20:22Yeah, well, well, well, well.
20:23Oh, that one.
20:23Holy .
20:26Is that what you've got there?
20:28That's what he's got.
20:29Must be what he's got.
20:32Whoa!
20:33Is that hit?
20:34Yeah.
20:36What the...
20:38The line is gone.
20:40Yeah, it's gone.
20:44I think there was a tuna on their line, and the shark was just jumping up around.
20:51Ah, something crazy and wild, huh?
20:55Never seen anything like that before.
20:56You know, the waters are probably a little warmer, warmer longer, and there's a lot of seal, so it's just
21:04a good habitat for the shark.
21:07The mako is just one of many species of shark prowling the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Warm waters have opened
21:14up new hunting grounds, and shark sightings are on the rise.
21:18They're calling out the seal population.
21:23We were overrun by seal, like, thousands and thousands of seal here.
21:29Now it seems to be spinning out a bit.
21:36Shit.
21:38This is the first time I've ever seen a mako shark jump clean out of the water, like, three or
21:43four times.
21:45Whoa!
21:51My father's 69 now. He's never seen it in his life.
21:55It's a moment I'll never forget.
21:58Pretty cool to see something like that, though.
22:01That jumped high, man.
22:02Huh?
22:03That jumped high.
22:04I thought he was going to jump right aboard.
22:07I was thinking about jumping off the boat earlier.
22:12Keep her eyes open for tuna again, get her lines back in the water.
22:22Well, I guess the day is over for this.
22:24Yeah.
22:25Want to get in a decent hour?
22:28It's been a 14-hour grind for the crew of the Miss Sophia Daisy.
22:32And with no tuna on deck, the coveted window for the best price of the year has officially closed.
22:39I was kind of expecting to get a couple of fish to send for the Japanese market before that shuts
22:48down.
22:51We both wanted to get a fish on the market, but it's not going to happen.
22:56It sucks, but that's how it goes.
23:00Things don't always work out in the plan.
23:04Oh, it feels so hopeless.
23:07Just looking and looking and looking.
23:12After days at sea, thousands of dollars in fuel are gone.
23:17And the brothers are digging themselves into debt.
23:21Minus 1,300 bucks for fuel.
23:25Minus 1,200 bucks in tuna gear.
23:30Not long, you got a tuna chewed up.
23:37So now we've got no chance of making the Japanese market here before the holiday, so we're just going to
23:43pack this up there for a few days.
23:46But Adam remains upbeat.
23:49Got to try again next week.
23:51Because one good catch could still offset their losses.
24:11Get this shit put back away for another year.
24:14In Old Harry, Captain Stephen Clark is taking stock of the season just passed.
24:21And looking forward to the one to come.
24:24Numbering down all the buoys to see what ones I'm missing or if I lost any.
24:28Just trying to get myself on track and organized so I'm not lost.
24:31Come next spring, once we start.
24:33You're always getting ready for the next season.
24:35As soon as one ends, you're kind of just start getting ready for the next one again.
24:48Hello.
24:50Who's, uh, who's license is selling there?
24:54They're trying to sell as a package, a package deal.
24:58A highly sought after lobster license far from the Maggie's is hitting the market.
25:04Those licenses aren't for sale every day.
25:07They catch a lot of lobsters, that's for sure.
25:10Might be good.
25:11The zone is near Anticosti Island, an isolated area Stephen knows well from his crabbing days.
25:18The season to Anticosti runs for 77 days.
25:22Seven days a week.
25:24There's no breaks.
25:25There's no Sunday off.
25:26There's no spending the day with your family, like, 11 straight weeks of fish and lobster.
25:31Well, man, I don't know.
25:34It would be a life-changing decision that also carries a multi-million dollar price tag.
25:41Pretty big commitment, a pretty bold move to make.
25:43I gotta weigh the pros and cons.
25:46The financial risk of this.
25:48This is a multi-million dollar gamble.
25:52A lot of risk.
25:53I'll think about it for a couple days, and we'll be chatting.
25:57Okay, man.
25:58Bye.
26:09The wind's gonna make it hateful for falling back.
26:12The wind makes it hateful for everything.
26:15On the first edition, Adam Clark is back on the water, but this time, he's not chasing bluefin.
26:22I'll just give the tuna a few days off, liking that.
26:25Maybe, you know, my luck might turn around, and I'll just go at the halibut.
26:29Okay, I'm not sure about this.
26:31He's working as a deckhand for his in-laws, Cody and Mark Goodwin.
26:36They're fishing their halibut quota of 5,000 pounds off the coast of Newfoundland.
26:43My job this year is gutting fish.
26:46It's quite a bit of work in that.
26:48You're bent over all day, and it's heavy lugging and pulling.
26:51Tie the buoy on it as it goes over.
26:53I have Cody and Adam with me today, son and son-in-law.
26:57When we come to Halibut, the Halibut family joins together.
27:01I try to get them to do the most of the work, but sometimes it doesn't work that way.
27:06If the fishing's good, they'll reach the quota in one trip.
27:11There's nothing worse than getting no fish, pulling the board with nothing on the hooks.
27:16I can't get the blame for anything. I'm back here.
27:20We start paying the buoy off.
27:23First one of the day, going over.
27:25Hold to the hot spot.
27:27Whenever you're ready.
27:29Yeah, let her go.
27:35To hunt Halibut, the crew relies on longlining, firing heavy anchors rigged with baited hooks to the ocean floor.
27:44So every three fathom, we have a hook, and we put a piece of bait on it like half a
27:49mackerel.
27:50They call them a bottom feeder. They're kind of a scavenger.
27:53They eat just about anything and catch them on the bottom on a hook.
27:57You fish your hobbit drawl, and you don't know what's on there until you pull that.
28:01It's another gamble. Just pick your spot and hope for the best.
28:08If you don't catch anything, it's another day. And, like, sometimes you can set your whole gear and not get
28:14a fish.
28:29I'm the king of crap. If I see a small one, I get really mad.
28:34That's right.
28:36Not a bad day. Not big, but better than not coming and not getting any, I guess.
28:43On Liam's legacy, Captain Steve Burke is chipping away at his colossal 120,000-pound quota.
28:51Probably the first one that ever had that much rock crab quota around here.
28:55Nice trap. Nice trap.
28:57Rock crab is fast-paced fishing.
29:00You don't have a lot of time to screw around. It's one after the other.
29:03All go, crab.
29:07Got a good crew now.
29:11You guys are getting a holler down pretty pat there.
29:14I'm doing pretty good.
29:15Ready?
29:16Hey.
29:19That last one's still a pretty good trap, too.
29:21A little bit slower than Alex, but when I get used to it, I'm sure I'll catch up to him
29:26no problem.
29:28Pitches are looking pretty good today.
29:31Probably 5,000 pounds.
29:33Another good jump taken out of the quota.
29:37Nice weather coming up ahead, so keep grinding at it.
29:45One runner easier here trying to save some fuel and get low on fuel.
29:48We're at 15 gallons an hour at this speed.
29:53To conserve his dwindling fuel supply, Steve slows to a crawl for the return trip to the harbor.
30:00Hello?
30:02Holy shit.
30:04Okay.
30:05I got a call from my friend Todd, and he's also a crab fisherman.
30:09He ran out of fuel.
30:10It was his father's boat.
30:11Well, I'll go get him, I guess.
30:21Eskimate Coast Guard Radio.
30:22Eskimate Coast Guard Radio.
30:23Liam's Legacy on 1-6.
30:25Over.
30:26Received a call from the fishing vessel Whatabuck that has motor trouble.
30:32I will tow him to Grozeal Harbor.
30:35Probably 6 miles from me.
30:37I'm on route.
30:37Over.
30:40This time of year, there's not a lot of boats in the water.
30:42There's not a lot of people fishing on the water.
30:43I'm in the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
30:46I don't have to help anyone volunteer, but when anyone calls, I'll do my best.
30:51Steve is the Maggie's rep for the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary, a volunteer organization that's called in for local water
30:58rescues.
30:59I can't go too fast, because I'm almost out of fuel myself.
31:02I'll be too broke down here.
31:07On the bow is a familiar face.
31:11Tyson's standing on a big sign in his hands.
31:14Tyson Scott, who's working the deck for his buddy Todd.
31:18SOS!
31:20Oh, .
31:22Oh, .
31:23Oh, .
31:25Oh, .
31:25Just fast.
31:26Oh, my.
31:27I've got to get good help.
31:29They're running out of fuel, so we're going to tow them in.
31:31Our rock crab competitors.
31:34Set them on the crease.
31:35Oh, .
31:36You're going up.
31:37Oh, .
31:37You're up.
31:38.
31:39Throw it.
31:40You're close enough.
31:41Pull a bunch of that up, Jesse.
31:42You need a bunch of them pulled up.
31:43Jesse, come on.
31:44You're on TV.
31:47Hey, if you miss this time around, let me have a crack at you.
31:53Mission successful for now.
31:55Yeah, I'll pull it in.
31:57Back up a bit.
31:59Got them, yeah.
32:00Now get them all.
32:03But the dead weight tow back to harbor will push Liam's legacy to the limit.
32:09I'm running off fumes also here.
32:11I'm getting pretty low.
32:12What's the fuel gauge?
32:13Not very good.
32:16Hope nobody has to come get us.
32:24Hello.
32:26Not very good for me.
32:28Okay.
32:29Talk to you later.
32:31Well, the good sign is Marsh has got the fuel truck coming.
32:35Captain Steve Burke's rescue operation is running on empty.
32:40Holy shit.
32:41In a race to drag a stranded boat back to port before his own engine stalls out.
32:48He's running off fumes also here.
32:50I'm getting pretty low.
32:51How's the fuel going?
32:55Not very good.
32:59Head back slowly.
33:01Can't panic yet.
33:04He keeps his speed down, making the most of what little fuel is left.
33:08We're about ten minutes from Grovefield Harbor.
33:20Close to home.
33:26Got in the back of shore, safe and sound.
33:32There.
33:33Mission complete.
33:35Motor's still running anyway, so I guess I got enough fuel for now.
33:40Very thankful to have Steve.
33:43We might have made it in idle in there, I don't know, but she kept shutting off and stuff, so
33:46it was a lot better idea just to get towed in.
33:51We're around another adventure.
33:54In a full day of challenges, Steve's crew stepped up with the biggest victory going to his teenage cousin.
34:04Pretty promising looking, so hopefully he'll stick at it with me here and have him around for a while.
34:18Something coming, aren't they? Big one.
34:21Over 120 kilometers away, off the coast of Newfoundland, the crew of the first edition is going toe-to-toe
34:29with deep-water halibut.
34:33All right, get away out.
34:35We get them 10 pounds to 500 pounds.
34:38Some of them are just real big and heavy and awkward to handle.
34:43The deck is slippery, and the things that slide around is unbelievable, especially when you start cleaning the fish.
34:51It's been ten hours of grueling deck work for Adam.
34:54You're gutting fish down on your hands and knees, pretty rough on the body.
35:0070!
35:02Most trawls are paying off, and the hold is quickly filling with the heavyweight fish.
35:14Do I like halibut fishing?
35:17Yeah.
35:18Now I hate halibut fishing.
35:24I shouldn't say I hate it, but I don't love it.
35:31When it comes dark, it almost feels like I'm spinning around in a circle and, you know, I'm kind of
35:37tired because you've been awake so many hours.
35:40Where was I?
35:46You've got to be tough to be able to be seasick and keep working at the same time.
35:52Yes, Adam gets very seasick.
35:53Very seasick.
35:57Works for 15, 20 minutes, and gets sick for a few minutes and back at it back and forth.
36:02Torture for him, I guess.
36:06I know what it feels like to be hung over again, and I don't want that.
36:11Another 100 pounds?
36:13Their quota is within striking distance.
36:16Oh, my God.
36:23Normally, when I'm at the wheel, I'm too occupied to think about or get sick most of the time.
36:30But pretty good days fishing.
36:33We've got to over our quota a little bit.
36:36And for a seasick Adam, the best part of a day fishing halibut
36:43Oh, lee whiz.
36:45Is when it's finally over.
37:02Please be easy, please be easy.
37:05After a recovery day, Adam is back in the captain's chair, chasing his favorite fishery.
37:12We're just headed south of the island here, about 20, 30 miles.
37:17Let's give it a try.
37:19He's hoping the third time is the charm to finally snag a monster bluefin tuna.
37:25Tuna's been pretty hard so far.
37:28When you don't get a fish, you're starting to wonder if there's something wrong with your boat,
37:32something wrong with your lines, something wrong with me.
37:36We're staying out until we get one.
37:37With costs piling up, Adam and Kevin still have four unfilled tags for tuna.
37:44Pressure's on, they get the tuna caught.
37:47Tuna, you can come back many days empty handed, and they got all that expense with it.
38:00Oh, oh.
38:02Oh, here they are, tuna's right here beside us.
38:05Tuna fish!
38:07Okay, get a rod ready.
38:10Mackerel, Liam?
38:12Yep.
38:16That's good.
38:18Keep an eye out, Liam.
38:22Tuna's underneath of us.
38:26Come on, let's go.
38:33Is there anything on the sound there?
38:35Yeah, there's a little bit of bait and some other stuff, too. I don't know what it is.
38:39Dear Lord, bring this tuna on our deck.
38:46With a thud.
38:47Amen.
38:48Amen.
38:49Oh, they're right here.
38:50Bust some water here.
38:53Oh, we're hooked up.
38:55We're on, Tim.
38:55Good job.
38:56Kick off, kick off.
38:58Oh.
39:03Let's go.
39:04Let's go, go, go.
39:11You can't let the line come loose.
39:13Like, you gotta pull a little bit like it's here.
39:15Yeah.
39:17As soon as it goes slack a little bit, you gotta crank them in.
39:20Crank them, huh?
39:21Yeah.
39:22On the Miss Sophia Daisy, it's been a long battle.
39:28There we go.
39:30They finally got a tuna on the hook.
39:33There he goes.
39:34After repeated misses, no one is going to let this fish slip away.
39:39Okay, Lee, you ready?
39:40Ready to take him?
39:41A little bit of pressure on him.
39:45If you can crank him, crank him.
39:46Crank, crank, crank, crank, crank, crank.
39:48I can't crank him.
39:50It's very tight now.
39:51You gotta keep checking.
39:54Here, let me take it and we'll try to lock it.
39:56Check to see if the bolt's turning.
39:58When Kevin turns his rod, is it turning?
40:01It's turning.
40:02It is turning?
40:03Yeah.
40:03Okay, we'll tighten it up tight.
40:05Tuna are so powerful, they can rip a rod right off a boat,
40:09unless it's locked in place.
40:11We got him at 50 feet now.
40:16It's kind of a battle.
40:18They'll take line, I'll take line.
40:20They'll put up a good fight.
40:25If you bring them in too quick, they'll be a little wild when they get around the boat.
40:30When you fight a tuna too hard, it does something to the quality of their meat and, you know, they're
40:34not worth much after.
40:38When they do get tired, they'll start making their circles underwater, and then they'll slowly start coming up the surface.
40:48They're hoping for a big payday, but they won't know the size of fish on the line until it's boatside.
40:55I think this is it. Hold him.
41:03Now he's going under the boat.
41:05Hold the line out.
41:07Ah, put him under again.
41:08The main thing is not having that line touch the boat.
41:12There's a good chance it's going to chafe off and break.
41:14I bring him in.
41:16Hey, I'm turning.
41:17Turn, turn. Hold the rope.
41:17Hold the line out.
41:18Easy.
41:19Hold the line.
41:20Okay, get my rope, Kevin.
41:21Get my rope.
41:23Yep.
41:27Hey, I'm steady the fish.
41:29Pull him the bar.
41:31Pull him.
41:39We got one.
41:41High five.
41:42Yeah.
41:44When we hook up, we're always hoping that it's a nice, big, fat fish, but the first one that comes
41:50up is small.
41:53But, you know, it's on our line. We've got to take it.
41:56Oh, he's a cute little one.
41:57I know. He's short and stout.
41:59Good.
42:00Small for sure.
42:02You're hoping for a $10,000 fish, but see the size of this fish, probably only like $2,000.
42:07It doesn't even pay for my fuel up to date.
42:10Yeah, any fish around the area? Look around near the area. Right here, any splashes or what?
42:15There's a group of birds down here.
42:18With one finally under their belt, Captain Adam is eager to start chasing the next.
42:24It's nice to get one, but, you know, hopefully the next one's a little bigger.
42:27We're going to have to keep our eyes open for tuna again and get our lines back in the water.
42:32I got one and we still got three left to go.
42:37First one, though, is the hardest.
42:40You can't give up. Like, you've got to get your fish.
