00:00Our race is now on race two.
00:04Hi guys, we are here at the Gold Coast Broadwater Parklands
00:08and this is the Big Gold Coast Marathon Weekend.
00:12So this is a Saturday and we're here to catch some of the action
00:17for the half marathon which begins at 6.15
00:23and now we're only about probably 15, 20 minutes away
00:27from the winners of that half marathon coming through
00:31and the finish line is just behind me there.
00:33So it's really exciting.
00:36Basically the Gold Coast Marathon Weekend, it's a big event here.
00:40On the Saturday we have the half marathon.
00:43We also have other events too though.
00:46Like all through the day they'll be doing events
00:47like we're going to then have the Southern Cross University 10k run
00:52and then the Gold Coast Airport 5km run
00:55and we've also got our wheelchair events today as well
00:59like 5km and 10km wheelchair events.
01:03So very exciting.
01:05Basically, well the Assis Gold Coast Marathon, that's on the Sunday
01:09and that's the big one.
01:10That's 42.2km.
01:13And last year and this year we're expecting record numbers
01:16and it's like up to 15,000 people in the actual Gold Coast Marathon
01:24and that's one where the runners will be running up past Surfer's Paradise,
01:29like up on Surfer's Paradise, Esplanade basically.
01:32This one, the half marathon, they're headed north
01:36but they're going to be coming back through here soon
01:39and I'm just having a look.
01:40We might have to move across for...
01:45Oh, we'll move this way actually.
01:47They've got this activity out here.
01:50So they're patrolling along here.
01:53But basically it's very exciting
01:55because the Gold Coast Marathon is a World Athletics Label road race
02:01and in 2024, the half marathon also achieved
02:07the World Athletics Label road race title.
02:11So in 2024, it was a historic event actually, I think in Oceana,
02:16both the events running,
02:18I think it was the first time in Oceana or in the Oceana area or something
02:22that both the half and the full marathon
02:25were those World Athletics Label road race events.
02:29So anyway, I can hear a lot of action behind us.
02:31We're going to try and catch the winners coming through of the half marathon
02:35and there's big crowds here
02:37and it's just going to be a big day here at the Broadwater Parklands
02:41with quite a few events running throughout the day.
02:44So we're right here, we're in the stands now
02:46and we're right here at the finish line
02:49waiting for those half marathon brothers
02:52that'll be coming through this season.
02:55So it won't be long, it's very exciting.
02:57This is the blue carpet.
02:59It's a culmination of a lot of training,
03:01a lot of training, a lot of preparation.
03:03So it's so fun here.
03:05The atmosphere is really fun.
03:06They're doing a lot of joking and stuff.
03:08And I'm wondering about the China Airlines
03:11Gold Coast Half Marathon
03:13and the time that you can do it in is 3 hours and 20 minutes.
03:18So if you're not a little elite athlete
03:20and you want to get a finishing ribbon,
03:23you have to do it in that time, basically.
03:25So that's actually quite touching.
03:28If you're at the finish line,
03:30you can see a lot of group really pushing themselves
03:33just to be able to get that finish up ribbon.
03:36So the winner's not far away now
03:38so they've got four buttons there.
03:40He's going to be coming up with them.
03:41Really pushing the pace.
03:43They're back in the vicinity
03:44of the fourth quarter finish line area here.
03:48Now, BIPs, how are you feeling up there?
03:51Two of them are happy.
03:52Two of them are happy.
03:59What a day, what a way to start
04:01the 46th edition
04:03of the Ashish Gold Coast Marathon
04:05on the weekend.
04:06Gold pass, makes a noise!
04:08Yeah, woo-hoo!
04:10If you don't make any noise, just go home.
04:12Just go, man.
04:13Okay, we don't make any noise
04:14when we've held to go home.
04:16I'm so joking.
04:17Now, I'm the lead runner now on the screen
04:20and there's all of them.
04:22So I don't know if there's going to be a bridge in the air
04:25to see who's been coming over to.
04:27So yeah, it's very exciting.
04:29The commentator just said we're about eight minutes away
04:31so they'll be coming through soon.
04:34And I don't know if I said this earlier
04:38but these two races are hitting a massive amount
04:42of competitors.
04:43Like, it's been going up year by year.
04:46And yeah, this year I think for this one,
04:49the half marathon,
04:50I think there's about 10,000 runners in this race.
04:54So to see those chances of runners,
04:56it's been going to be a beautiful race.
04:58We haven't set them for a good marathon,
05:00go past the ride-way race.
05:01It's got a really exciting race.
05:03Three-minute K-Page,
05:04go back to our lead fever.
05:07Race is genius.
05:08Very exciting.
05:10Ride the Quindle of Capdack.
05:14What a place to race.
05:15This course is renowned for the people to central.
05:18It's flat, it's fast.
05:20Yes, that's true, what he just said.
05:22That is true.
05:23Actually, that was on my chin as well.
05:26So because the Gold Coast Marathon is actually world-renowned
05:29for being really flat and fast,
05:33about 60% of the participants
05:36that come and run this race
05:37will get a personal bedtime, basically.
05:40Because there's a beautiful track to run,
05:42really good conditions for a fast run.
05:44And also, how do we miss him?
05:47I was hoping he's just right here
05:48and I'm going to run the finish line.
05:50OK, we're three minutes away there.
05:57Again, those reasonable things.
05:58You won't see the speed.
06:01Have a look at how fast they're running past
06:03the spectators who are standing still.
06:06This is going to come down
06:08to the final piece of the 21.1km journey.
06:15This is where the tactics come into play.
06:18They're not so worried about the tie now.
06:20There's any...
06:21You've got to be prepared.
06:23Any moment, one of these athletes
06:24could just put a big surge in
06:27and start a early sprint to the finish line.
06:31OK, the countdown's really on.
06:33So the two leaders, they're shoulder to shoulder,
06:35coming down here at a large point.
06:38And the rhythm's up.
06:39Turn into the finish line.
06:43This looks like it's going to be a sprint finish, Pete.
06:47We've got Shunpei Tamita from Japan
06:51and Edward Marks of Australia.
06:55We need you, Gold Coast, to get them home.
07:00They are still walked in step.
07:03They are inside the final one kilometer
07:05of this race, Gold Coast.
07:07They must be failing now, like they're bigger than first year.
07:10Here they are.
07:11The pace now, son.
07:12The Japanese athlete,
07:13Jumpei, has put the pedal down.
07:16Hatsy Ozzy got an exit.
07:18It doesn't look like it to say.
07:20The Japanese Jumpei has put the pedal down.
07:24He is literally sprinting the pride of him.
07:28Here he comes now, off the highway,
07:30into the race.
07:31Big, hard, crazy.
07:33Gold Coast, get ready to bring him home.
07:37Shunpei Tamita has broken away.
07:41You'll see him round the corner when you rehearse this.
07:45This is where you bring him home with everything you've got.
07:49What a race this has been.
07:51It's been down to the wide,
07:52but you've paid from Japan.
07:55Now comes into sight.
07:56Stand up.
07:57Back some noise for your 50-20 slip.
08:00Dianne Ayron,
08:02half-American champion,
08:04here on the Gold Coast.
08:06One hour,
08:07more than two seconds.
08:09Right on the board of Sydney.
08:19And coming up,
08:21a couple of seconds behind in second place,
08:24Edward Marks,
08:25an incredible run from the Aussie.
08:27First Aussie across the line.
08:28And ladies and gentlemen,
08:31keep coming home.
08:32This is your final home finisher,
08:34from Japan,
08:35this year.
08:36Oh,
08:40that's so exciting to see.
08:42The Japanese contingent,
09:10what a strong showing.
09:11from this elite men's field.
09:16Your champion for 2026,
09:19from Japan,
09:21Shunpei Tomita,
09:23in a race record time.
09:26Wow, so did you hear that?
09:28A race record time.
09:29A race record time.
09:30A race record time.
09:30That is really cool.
09:31A race record time.
09:33And that's not unusual here,
09:35at the Gold Coast Marathon,
09:36to make race record time,
09:38because I'm running conditions.
09:39All right,
09:58Gold Coast.
09:59And please consider,
10:01in course record.
10:03in course record.
10:09Well,
10:10that is just so exciting to see.
10:13And now,
10:14given that the half marathon,
10:15has got so many,
10:17it's like about 10,000,
10:19they're going to all be sort of
10:20coming through now,
10:21for eight,
10:22half, five years.
10:22And obviously,
10:23we've got the elite athletes,
10:24now home.
10:25But all the other athletes,
10:26will be coming through as well.
10:28And like I said,
10:29you know,
10:30seeing that,
10:30and towards the end,
10:32of that three hour mark,
10:34you'll see people,
10:34reaching themselves,
10:36to get that finishing medal.
10:38And that's something,
10:39they really love it.
10:40It's really motivating to see that.
10:42You know,
10:43that people,
10:43that may not be an athlete athlete,
10:45they're still really...
10:46Bring them down,
10:47that blue cap,
10:47the Gold Coast.
10:49So how exciting.
10:50The atmosphere here,
10:51is just so wonderful.
10:53The Gold Coast Marathon Weekend,
10:54is a big deal.
10:55You know,
10:56it's a huge event for the community,
10:58and it's just,
10:58it's a world,
10:59it's a worldwide event.
11:00We have athletes,
11:01elite athletes,
11:02coming from all over the world,
11:04to take part,
11:04in the Gold Coast Marathon Weekend.
11:09And here we are.
11:10Come on in at home.
11:11Well we're going to be here,
