Yorkshire Children's Charity recently hosted its annual event, The Yorkshire Rampage, an adrenaline-fuelled cycling challenge that saw cyclists ascend the iconic Victoria Leeds multi-storey car park.
Transcript
00:00I'm Charlotte Farrington, and I am the founder of Yorkshire Children's Charity, and we are here this evening at Victoria
00:07Gate Car Park in Leeds for Rampage.
00:10So this is our fourth year of running Rampage out of Victoria Gate Car Park, with thanks to Redical, who
00:19own the car park, they allow us to close off the top six floors for all of these fantastic cyclists,
00:2585 cyclists, to turn up this evening.
00:28And it's basically, it's a hard sprint to the top, with an overall winner at the end.
00:35The cycling community are absolutely amazing. They always show up with bags of enthusiasm. It is super competitive in terms
00:44of who gets to the top first.
00:46It's hard, you know, it's a tough sprint up. I'm personally not aware of any other races that take place
00:54in the country like this. I think it's quite a unique initiative.
00:56It was a bit nerve-wracking, but it was really fun, and everybody's super supportive, helping you put your numbers
01:03on, giving each other a lot of support, cheering, and the atmosphere on the top is incredible.
01:09I do a lot of field climb racing, and I've never done anything like this before. I don't do any
01:14crit racing or anything. I thought it looked like a really fun thing to do, a bit different, and thought
01:20I'd be going to go, basically.
01:20I heard about it through a gravel cycle that I did a couple of weeks ago, so it came up
01:26on my social media, and it seemed like a really fun, inspiring event, especially because we're trying to represent women
01:33as well in cycling,
01:34so to try and, you know, bring it more to the forefront for women to participate in such a well
01:42-attended event.
01:43It's supposed to be fun. I think there's part of people taking it extremely seriously here, people deferring their tyres
01:50onto them on grit.
01:52To be honest, in the terms of hill climbing racing, it's not that steep. The issue is that it's predominantly
01:57just right-hand corners.
01:58So many children from inner-city schools who don't have any green outdoor space, who actually just never got to
02:06experience what the freedom of riding a bike, you know.
02:11It's like this last 12 months, they've been out, they've had these opportunities. We've cycled them round, heard farmers, various
02:19different forests,
02:20and they've been on the bikes, they've done den builds, and they've ultimately, they've been out, they've enjoyed being children
02:27for the day,
02:29which is something that can never, ever be taken for granted with the children that we see at Yorkshire Children's
02:36Charity.
02:37The cycling community in Yorkshire is just phenomenal, really. You know, time and time and time again, we see them
02:44turn out and deliver brilliant things,
02:46and the fact that they've all shown up here this evening to do something really exceptional for kids in our
02:51community.
02:52Once again, hats off to everybody who's stuck their hands up and, yeah, are putting themselves through the pain of
02:58doing this.
