00:06Iranian state TV just dropped this footage.
00:10A massive container ship, stuck, stranded, run aground in the Strait of Hormuz.
00:16Iran says it's a warning to the world.
00:19But when analysts looked closer, the story falls apart almost instantly.
00:24On July 1, Iranian state broadcaster IRIB released video of a foreign container ship
00:32sitting in shallow water near Hormuz Island,
00:34with an Iranian tugboat pulling up alongside to help.
00:38The official story, this ship tried to sneak through the Strait using a route not approved by the IRGC Navy
00:46and paid the price, running aground in shallow water.
00:50Iranian TV even blurred out the ship's name in the footage,
00:54convenient.
00:55State media used the moment to repeat a warning they've made for months,
01:00use Iran's official route of authority near Larik Island,
01:04or risk, quote, irreparable incidents.
01:07But here's where it unravels.
01:10Independent maritime trackers, including tankertrackers.com,
01:14went straight to satellite data and ship tracking records,
01:17and they identified the vessel almost immediately.
01:20It's called the Arista, a Comoros-flagged container ship sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury for ties to Iranian shipping
01:28networks.
01:29And here's the twist.
01:31The Arista hasn't been attempting a risky transit.
01:34It's been sitting in that exact same spot, near Hormuz Island, in Iranian waters, since mid-March, nearly four months.
01:44So this wasn't a rogue ship getting punished for defying the IRGC.
01:48This was a sanctioned, Iran-linked vessel that's been parked there for months, repackaged on state TV as a cautionary
01:57tale.
01:58Why?
01:59Because Iran is in the middle of a much bigger fight over who controls the Strait of Hormuz,
02:05one of the most important choke points on Earth, where roughly a fifth of the world's oil and gas normally
02:11passes through.
02:12Since the war earlier this year, Iran has pushed hard to force every ship through its own escorted corridor,
02:20issuing warnings, turning vessels away, and in some cases, striking non-compliant ships with drones.
02:27Oman and the IMO have tried to open a safer, alternative southern route,
02:32and Iran has pushed back on that too, sometimes violently.
02:36So this single piece of footage, a ship and a tugboat, is really a small scene inside a much bigger
02:44power play.
02:45Tehran wants the world to believe it controls this waterway so completely, it can punish any ship that steps out
02:52of line.
02:53And a stranded container ship with dramatic tugboat footage, that's a perfect visual for that message.
02:59The problem is, the ship in the video was never taking that risk in the first place.
03:04Meanwhile, actual shipping companies are stuck making real decisions with this misinformation swirling around them.
03:12Some vessels remain stranded inside the Gulf, major shipping lines have suspended routes,
03:18insurance costs are climbing, and crews are being offered war zone pay just to sail through the strait.
03:24So while Iran plays up a stranded ship story that doesn't hold up to scrutiny,
03:29the actual risk in the strait of Hormuz is very real, just not the version shown on state TV.
03:36As of now, the Arista is still sitting exactly where it's been for months.
03:41No independent confirmation of hull damage, no confirmed crew injuries,
03:46just more questions about who's really telling the truth in the strait of Hormuz.
