00:05Welcome to Heat Vision. I'm Aaron Couch and I'm here with Boris Kitt and Ryan Parker to
00:10talk about the latest disturbance in the force or maybe bringing balance to the force. I don't know.
00:16I think it depends on who you talk to. Some people are definitely disturbed and some are
00:20happy. Anyway, JJ Abrams is back, director episode 9, stepping in after Colin Trevorrow exited for
00:29various reasons last week. And yeah, there are a lot of different opinions on this. I mean,
00:34Ryan, you definitely have thoughts. I do. I am very okay with this. I wish I could say something
00:40more than that, but I can't really at this point. I think that we're going to get a good Star
00:45Wars
00:45film, which is all that we can really ask for. I am disappointed though because I wanted to have
00:51a third director because I wanted that third flavor. I wanted that third palette. That's what I thought
00:57made the original trilogy so much fun, was that you had three different films that had three
01:02different tones and timbres to them. And so I think this will be good. I'm excited. JJ has proven that
01:08he can deliver a Star Wars film, but I don't know. I just wanted something more unique.
01:16What do you think, Boris? Well, I mean, a lot of this comes down to the script issues that they've
01:24been having. That's why they're in this situation. You know, Colin and his writing partner, Derek Connolly,
01:30tried to, you know, for months tried to crack the script. You know, they ended up bringing another
01:35screenwriter in August and clearly they were having issues. I mean, Kathy Kennedy did not want to lose
01:42another director on the heels of Lord Miller. And so now you have Chris Terrio and you have JJ,
01:49who are going to be co-writing. And a lot of people are scratching their heads going,
01:52how did Chris Terrio get into this mix? You know, what's he bringing to the table? And because,
01:59and you can tell, because of all this director, you know, musical chairs, they've had to push back
02:04the release date of six months because they really need to knock the script out because that's the
02:10thing that's been causing them a lot of headaches. And Chris Terrio, I mean, he's gotten, yeah,
02:15came up with Argo, Batman v Superman, Justice League. I mean, he's, he's getting a lot of giant
02:21jobs. So he's kind of the guy now, right? What's, what's going on there? Well, that's, that's a good
02:26thing and a bad thing, I guess. If you, if you know, people loved Argo, but a lot of people
02:29did not
02:30like BVS. And if he's the guy who wrote that, there's going to be a lot of heck to pay
02:36on that,
02:36on that side. So again, it all comes out of the script. You know, they're having, you know,
02:40Princess Leia issues. They don't, they, they still need to solve a lot of issues, uh, from that.
02:45And it always, and even with the previous movies, it always comes down to the story. And a lot of
02:51times they've been trying to, you know, crack it in, in every single movie so far. It's, you know,
02:58they've come and gone with, with writers. So it's, they clearly, you know, have a hard time cracking it.
03:04And because, rightfully so, because there's so many fans that are invested and each person
03:08thinks they know what, uh, Star Wars should be. We'll get to that in a moment. But first,
03:13I, I've seen both sides today on social media, those who are really excited that JJ is doing it,
03:18and those who are not very pleased at all that he's doing it. One of the things that I've seen
03:22are that people are talking about his two Star Trek films, uh, you know, his, his first reboot of it,
03:28which was so beloved and everybody thought was brilliant. And then you had Into Darkness,
03:31which I personally thought was better than the reboot. I know you don't, uh, not, not for the
03:36story and whatnot necessarily, but I felt that the, the characters were a little bit more fleshed out
03:41and that he maybe knew what he was working with better. And so he was able to do, to deliver
03:47a
03:47better product. And I personally think that he's going to be able to do that here. He's a little bit
03:51more acquainted with the characters and I feel like he's gonna, that will help him bring them to the
03:57surface even more. I'm really excited for Last Jedi, but I think that he can wrap it up nicely
04:03if that's what they're aiming to do with episode nine. But if, if only if he's invested, if he,
04:08because he was not invested in Into Darkness. You can tell he was not invested. I know you, that's,
04:12that's your thing, but it's, it's, it's, he was not invested. And he was invested in the first
04:18force in Force Awakens. Everybody was invested in Force Awakens. You could not screw it up. I mean,
04:22there was, the pressure for that was so great. And if he comes back with this one and it, at
04:30a much
04:30more lackadaisical, don't worry guys, I've got this, then that might not be the best attitude that,
04:36you know, the third movie needs. That is a great point. I hadn't considered the, the possibility,
04:42because I, because I feel like, oh, don't worry guys, I've got this. If I, you know, when I'm looking
04:47at him, so hopefully he doesn't feel that, because we all have pretty good confidence in him. But I,
04:52I do think it's interesting, Star Trek Into Darkness, we've talked about this. Um, I think
04:57that's the reason why I have confidence is, in my opinion, the sequel didn't quite work out. And he's,
05:03he's given interviews where he's talked about some of those mistakes. So I think he, I think he gets
05:08some of the pitfalls you have when you, when you make a sequel. So I feel like, I still think
05:12he can
05:13knock this one out of the park. You know, it's interesting, one of the things that we were talking about,
05:16uh, not too long ago, was the director musical chairs, and how it either gave us confidence,
05:22or made us feel a little shaky about the product. I personally felt a little shaky about the product
05:27right around the time of the Han Solo switch up, because I felt that personally, it would appear
05:32that they're starting to slap these things together too quickly, which I told you was originally my
05:36fear when it came to Disney, that that would be just rush, rush, rush, go, go, go, and that some
05:40things would start falling through the cracks. Now, do you still have an opinion on that one way or the
05:45other? Or do you feel that they keep going, not back to the well, so to speak, but going with
05:51directors they know work, such as Ron Howard, such as JJ, to secure the timetable they want, but also
05:57get the directors they need? Yeah, I mean, that's the optics of this move, right? You get the person
06:02that you know, 100%, we're not going to fire this person, they're going to, they're going to be fine.
06:07Yeah. So it'll be, I think what will be really interesting is, you know, episode, you know,
06:12if we get in episode 10 or we hear more about various spin-offs, are they going to trust these,
06:19you know, kind of the Josh Trank, Colin Trevorrow types? Probably not, maybe. Maybe they'll go for
06:24the more tried and true. We'll see though. Well listen, Lucasfilm tried with the young directors.
06:29They tried with Josh Trank, they tried with Gareth Edwards, they tried with Lord Miller, and clearly
06:38the structure of the place, the structure of Star Wars is not necessarily, you know, people will tell
06:45you they have a very challenging development process with people on both sides who have very
06:51strong visions. And, and somebody clearly is in charge, and it's Kathy, and she tried the young
06:58thing, and it's not necessarily working at this stage, because maybe these guys want to go too
07:02far off field. And so this, that they're going for the more established and safe choices that will get,
07:08will deliver you a movie, you know, that, that seems to fit the corporate, or at least the, the,
07:15the banner of Star Wars. We'll be right back after this. Well, let me ask you this,
07:20take off your reporter hat for a second. Just as a fan, does this give you confidence knowing that
07:24they're really trying to protect the brand that we love, or is this strictly, it's just business,
07:31and it makes sense business-wise to do what they're doing? Well, protecting the brand is business,
07:36and, and what is Star Wars? And that's the thing, what is Star Wars to people? You know, when, when
07:41JJ
07:41came back and gave us Force Awakens, it's, it's a mashup of, of the first trilogy. Right. You know,
07:47it gave people what they, what they wanted. And now you have to reflect that you're going to be
07:50getting a Star Wars movie every year of some sort. And what does that mean? Because that, because that,
07:56that, when Force Awakens came out, that was like, you know, it was, it was water after, after spending,
08:02you know, 10 years in the Sahara Desert. Now, if you're, if you're, you know, living in, in, in,
08:09you know, an Eden, and you have water all the time, you know, water isn't that special. So how do
08:14you keep that,
08:15how do you keep that water special? Right. Well, I can't argue with that. What about you?
08:18What do you think? Do you, are you more confident that they're protecting the product or it's business?
08:23I understand that, but I'm feel like they're probably doing it for the fan's sake as well.
08:27Yeah. It reminds me of, um, Marvel Studios. I feel, you know, I feel like I'm in pretty good hands.
08:33Maybe it's, I'm in Eden. I get, now I get three of those a year. I know, uh, worst case
08:38scenario,
08:38I'll have a pretty good time. Best case scenario, I'll be like, that was amazing. So, so, um,
08:42and look, the fact that they are pushing back the release date, they know that this is not something
08:47that's going to be slapped together and that they, they're taking a lot of time and to craft
08:51a very satisfying and proper ending to, to the trilogy. Does that make you more excited for
08:57Last Jedi or do you still feel the same, about the same for it? Oh, I'm excited for Last Jedi
09:01completely because I, I mean, I'm really excited to see what Lian Johnson has, is, uh, is going to do.
09:06I am too. I wouldn't be surprised if it is a darker film with a lot of character development,
09:13a lot like Emperor was. Not necessarily good because it's dark, but just, I don't know. I just
09:20feel like it's going to be good. I hope that it's going to be good. As a nerd, I want
09:24it to be good.
09:24I still, when you say Last Jedi, I think of that poster and they've done such a great job with
09:28that,
09:29with, with that poster. It just stands out with just the, of the simplicity of the three characters
09:34and like the low dividing lightsaber. I think it's, I think I have a lot of, a lot of hope
09:39for that.
09:39So you truly are an Eden. So any, any final thoughts or? I feel good about it. I was a
09:47little
09:47mixed this morning just because like I said, I wanted the new director. I wanted that new flavor,
09:52but I like JJ. I like what he does. I have complete confidence and I'm, I'm excited. I'm,
09:58I'm excited. Fantastic. I'm always excited.
10:04All right. Well, thanks guys. And thank you. Thank you.
