00:0038,000 people died.
00:02They died 95% from mosquitoes, malaria.
00:0795%.
00:07You expected almost to die.
00:09They paid workers from the United States.
00:11Mostly, they came in, and mostly, I must say, men.
00:14It was a little different time.
00:16Today we would have men and women.
00:18But they had all men.
00:20And they paid them massive amounts of money,
00:23more than they were making as workers in the United States.
00:27It's such a fascinating thing, the Panama Canal.
00:30I've studied it long and hard.
00:31And when they gave it away, $1.
00:34$1.
00:35But they died from the mosquito, and they died from the snake.
00:38They have a viper, a snake, that if you get bit, you're in trouble.
00:42If you get bit, you are dead.
00:43You are dead.
00:44And that got about, that wiped out about 5%.
00:47We lost 38,000 people building the Panama Canal.
00:51Our people.
00:5238,000 people died building the Panama Canal.
00:56It opened, and from day one, it was very successful.
00:59And we gave it away.
01:01We gave it away.
01:02It was the most expensive thing we ever built.
01:05And it was also the most profitable thing we ever built.
01:08That's a nice combination.
01:09A little bit like Venezuela.
01:11We did a good job in Venezuela.
01:16But we're actually doing equally as well with the Islamic Republic of Iran.
01:23Maybe you've heard of it.
01:25But think of it.
01:27The Panama Canal.
01:29So we gave it away.
01:30The first thing they did, you know what they did?
01:32They raised the prices for the ships by four times.
01:36And they didn't lose one ship.
01:38And then they raised it again twice.
01:41And they didn't lose one ship.
01:43All they did is make tremendous amounts of money for years and years.
01:47How stupid was that?
01:49And now China is trying to take over the Panama Canal.
01:55And we're not going to let that happen.
01:57Okay?
01:57Okay?
