00:00For young Johorians, commuting to Singapore to work daily is anything but a pleasure drive.
00:06Many would choose their home state any day if only wages were a little higher.
00:12That is the constant refrain that Kartiyani Jayapalan hears from voters on her campaign trail
00:17in Skudai. The Johor Wanita DAP deputy chairmen and even professionals such as lawyers and doctors
00:24are voicing the same concerns. She herself is a lawyer. Jobs, wages and not having to depend on
00:31Singapore economically are the key issues for voters, especially the younger ones.
00:37With few jobs that pay decent wages to go around, young Johorians have no choice but to go to
00:42Singapore. At the last count, at least 1.18 million of them are already employed in the republic with
00:49at least 400,000 crossing the causeway daily for work. Of course there are other concerns.
00:55Kartiyani said among other pain points is the rising cost of living. For her, the battle lines are already
01:01drawn. Now, the fight begins. Amadeep Gill, FMT.
