00:00The Consumer Affairs Division says it continues to monitor poultry prices across the country
00:05as part of its mandate to promote fair pricing in the marketplace.
00:09Its latest assessment, based on prices collected between June 26 and 29,
00:15shows the average live weight price for chicken has risen to $9.25 per pound,
00:22up from $9.02 recorded in May.
00:26The average fee for plucking and gutting has also increased slightly,
00:30from $15.33 in May to $15.41 in June.
00:38The division says consumers should understand the difference between live weight pricing
00:43and dressed weight pricing before making a purchase.
00:46Under the current averages, a five-pound live chicken would cost approximately $61.66 after processing fees.
00:55But because a bird typically loses about 20% of its weight during plucking and gutting,
01:01the final dressed chicken weighs around four pounds, bringing the effective cost to about $15.42 per pound.
01:10Officials stress there is no universal rule that one pricing method offers better value than the other,
01:16saying consumers should compare prices and determine which option provides the best value at the point of purchase.
01:23Beyond pricing, the Consumer Affairs Division is also reminding shoppers to pay attention to food safety.
01:29Consumers are being encouraged to compare prices between poultry depots,
01:33ensure premises are clean and supplied with running water,
01:37confirm poultry is handled hygienically,
01:40and inspect processed chickens to ensure they are free of entrails and show no signs of discoloration.
01:46The division says consumers and businesses should also continue to follow established public health practices when handling food.
01:53The Consumer Affairs Division says regular price monitoring will continue to help consumers make informed purchasing decisions
02:00while encouraging fair pricing practices across the poultry industry.
