00:00The Prison Officers Association says the Port of Spain prison remains fully operational,
00:05despite government's announcement last year that the 268-year-old facility would eventually be decommissioned.
00:12General Secretary Lester Logie says that the prison has received more than 150 additional inmates since the state of emergency,
00:20increasing pressure on an already overcrowded institution.
00:23According to Logie, officers are now contending with deteriorating infrastructure,
00:28including persistent water shortages caused by faulty water pumps.
00:32He says in several areas of the prison, officers and inmates have been forced to carry water to flush toilets
00:39and bathe.
00:40The Association is calling on the Ministry of Homeland Security to immediately authorize the purchase of three replacement pumps,
00:48arguing that the prison's commissary generates sufficient revenue to cover the costs.
00:53Logie is also questioning how those funds are being used and is calling for greater accountability over commissary profits.
01:00The Association further claims overcrowding has created additional challenges, including food shortages and increasing security concerns.
01:09It says the aging infrastructure has made it difficult to combat contraband,
01:13while prison officers continue to face operational issues that remain unresolved.
01:18On Sunday, Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander said plans to relocate the Port of Spain prison remain under active consideration,
01:28but will be carried out in phases.
01:30He said the prison's location is no longer suitable for the capital city's long-term development,
01:36but stressed that any relocation must ensure adequate accommodation for inmates and avoid disruption to prison operations.
