00:00Today is a very exciting day for me because today is the day Berkeley will
00:04be announcing the Nancy Pelosi Institute for Representative Democracy. My
00:09excitement about this springs from the fact that this will be totally
00:15nonpartisan. That's its value. It is the right time and the right place to think
00:20about this Nancy Pelosi Institute for Representative Democracy and Berkeley's
00:25public and representative democracy is about the public, the people, all the
00:30people. Berkeley is a quintessential American University. When we think about
00:36its entrepreneurial spirit, there's a university that produces more startups
00:39than any other university. The freedom to teach, the freedom of expression, this
00:44public university is very representative of that. We're going to research democracy.
00:49Obviously research is an important part of this Institute but we need to do more
00:52than that. We're literally going to strengthen it and that's the goal.
00:55Nancy will be teaching here so it is a new manifestation and the Institute will
01:00benefit from it. When people ask me what gives you hope, my hope is with young
01:05people. The future belongs to them. It is what this is about. This is why I want to
01:11be here at Berkeley. One country, one destiny. That was what was embroidered in
01:16Abraham Lincoln's jacket. So we have a big responsibility to honor the vision of our
01:21founders. Democratic, just for the people.
