00:00Woody, I have a question, um, well actually not just one, I have all of them, I have all the
00:05questions.
00:06Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're looking at questions that got answered in Toy Story 5.
00:11There will naturally be some spoilers.
00:14Alright Buzz, you gotta stay here, I'm going with them.
00:17Why? Why just you?
00:18Look, I just have more feel experience than you, that is all.
00:22Number 10. Does Bonnie have any friends?
00:26So you're Bonnie?
00:27Bonnie? I'm Andy.
00:31Someone told me you're really good with toys.
00:34Since her introduction in the third film, Bonnie has been an introverted child, coming out of her shell to play
00:40with her toys.
00:41The only other child we've really seen her interact with is Mason in the TV special Toy Story That Time
00:47Forgot.
00:47Check the supplies! We have hamburgers, spaghetti, pancakes, chocolate milk, gummy worms.
00:53Oh, what planet is he from?
00:55Neptune! Or maybe Florida.
00:57Although it's implied that more playdates will be in their future, Mason never comes up again.
01:03Chances are that Mason isn't in the same class as Bonnie.
01:06Otherwise, she would have seen him on her first day of kindergarten.
01:09In Toy Story 5, we see how Bonnie struggles to make friends.
01:13Bonnie tries using Lilypad to connect with the other girls from Dance, but they're the worst.
01:19Yet Tech also helps Bonnie to meet Blaze, who becomes a true friend.
01:23But yeah, Bonnie learns to, you know, not harp on other people's opinions and really be herself during the time
01:32in her life.
01:33And I think that that's really important. It's really good to share that.
01:36Number 9. Will late voice actors be replaced?
01:39Many wondered how Toy Story 5 would address the passing of two voice actors.
01:44Don Rickles died before he could record any dialogue for Toy Story 4.
01:48The filmmakers found a workaround, using archived recordings.
01:52Even then, they could only stitch together a handful of lines.
01:55You gotta be kidding!
01:56How do we do that?
01:57Oh, we coulda!
01:58We're not sending Dad to jail.
02:00You're no fun.
02:01Estelle Harris, Mrs. Potato Head's voice, passed away between the fourth and fifth films.
02:06Since Pixar could only rely on old recordings for so long, they seemingly had two options.
02:11Retire these fan favorites, or recast.
02:14They chose the latter, with Jeff Bergman and Anna Vocino taking over as the Mr. and Mrs.
02:20It was exciting, but a huge responsibility because it's been around for 31 years.
02:26So I am honored to do it, and I've always been a big fan of Mr. Potato Head and Don
02:32Rickles.
02:32It's not the first time a death has required Pixar to enlist a new actor.
02:36Blake Clark has filled in for Jim Varney since the third film.
02:39Well, I might be old, but I still got a spring in my step.
02:46Dammit!
02:46Alright, Slinkykins!
02:48Number 8. Will Buzz and Jesse officially get together?
02:52Ma-ma'am, I, uh, um, well, I just wanted to say you're a bright young woman with a beautiful
02:57yarn full of hair. A hair full of yarn.
02:59It's, uh, oh, um, I must go.
03:02Well, aren't you the sweetest face toy I ever met?
03:06It's evident from the end of Toy Story 2 that there's a spark between Buzz and Jesse.
03:11Although their relationship status has always been somewhat ambiguous, their romance received
03:16a little more attention in Toy Story 3, with Jesse getting into Buzz's Spanish side.
03:31Toy Story 4, meanwhile, didn't do much to progress their relationship, with Woody and Bo's love
03:36story taking center stage.
03:38Toy Story 5 makes it clearer than ever that Buzz and Jesse are in a committed relationship.
03:43How committed?
03:44There isn't another toy in the galaxy that Buzz has eyes for, prompting him to propose
03:49marriage. It may be pretend for Bonnie as she stages a wedding. For the Bessie ship, though,
03:54it's the real deal.
03:56Besides, I know about Buzz's Spanish mode.
04:00My what?
04:01Number 7. Does Emily remember Jesse?
04:04Emily may seem heartless for leaving Jesse under her bed for years, only to dump her in
04:09a box and drive away.
04:10We all hate Emily!
04:14No!
04:15No, Ross, we do not hate Emily.
04:17Honestly, though, can anyone say they never neglected a favorite toy once they grew up?
04:22Sometimes, we move on from our childhood toys without looking back. Other times, we become
04:26nostalgic for what we carelessly gave away. We wondered if Emily might look back on her
04:31decision to donate Jesse with regret. It's safe to say that she does, based on a time capsule
04:36that Jesse finds. Emily buried several mementos belonging to her daughter, whom she named
04:42Jesse. Motherhood likely brought up only memories for Emily. She couldn't pass Jesse on to her
04:47daughter, but she could pass on her name.
04:50To do something like that where you're contributing to their world was, you know, fun to think about.
04:57Number 6. Does Buzz consider Zerg his dad?
05:01Surrender, Buzz Lightyear. I have won.
05:05I'll never give in. You killed my father.
05:08No, Buzz. I am your father.
05:12No!
05:14Like The Empire Strikes Back, Toy Story 2 forever changed the dynamic between our hero and villain,
05:20with the reveal that Zerg is Buzz Lightyear's father. At least, that's one canon. Buzz has
05:26appeared in a few different properties, his relationship with Zerg changing in each.
05:30Wherever you go in the universe, you will hear my voice mocking you. Evil rules!
05:37In Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, Zerg is just an evil emperor who weirdly sounds like
05:44Al from Al's Toy Barn. There's no biological relationship, unless this line was meant to
05:49be taken seriously.
05:51I am your father.
05:57Psych! Made you look, you dimwit!
06:02The 2022 Lightyear movie took things in a whole new direction, with Zerg being an older Buzz
06:08from another timeline. As far as Buzz in the mainline Toy Story movies is concerned, though,
06:13Zerg is his father, which he reiterates to his fellow Lightyears.
06:18Buzz, are you coming?
06:19No, I have a lot of catching up to do with my dad.
06:24Good throw, son. That's my boy. Go long, buddy.
06:28Number 5. Will Woody stay?
06:30Toy Story 4 concluded with Woody becoming a lost toy, bidding farewell to the gang.
06:36He's not lost. Not anymore.
06:41When Pixar greenlit another film, director Andrew Stanton wrote the initial draft without Woody,
06:47just to see if he missed him. The filmmakers ultimately couldn't bring themselves to shelve
06:51Woody, who is still helping the Carnival gang find other lost toys. With tech taking over,
06:56Woody is given a reason to reunite with his friends during their hour of need.
07:05Pretty cowboy.
07:07Why are you wearing a dress, Woody?
07:08It's called a poncho, Forky. Thought I'd change it up.
07:12Yeah?
07:13While it's nice to have Woody back, some fear that this would retcon Toy Story 4's emotional ending,
07:19especially if Woody decided to stay.
07:21Toy Story 5 doesn't backtrack, however. With Jessie stepping up as a leader and Buzz as her deputy,
07:27Woody resumes his life on the road.
07:30Girls!
07:31I think Tom and I should take off. This is good. It's literally... We just back her up.
07:37Number 4. What objects can become sentient?
07:41Toys have lives of their own, but at what point does an object become sentient?
07:45Toy Story 4 played around with this concept, showing that with a pair of googly eyes, you can give a
07:50spork a soul.
07:51I know this is new to everybody, but you should see how much this little guy means to Bonnie.
07:56When she started playing with him, she had the biggest smile on her face. I wish I could have seen
08:02it.
08:02Toy Story 5 expands upon the criteria for sentient playthings.
08:06In a shack, Jessie encounters a xylophone with a giraffe's face,
08:10a pool floaty shaped like a flamingo, a sticky hand, and a garden gnome.
08:15Toy Story 2 already kind of canonized the gnomes as alive.
08:19Has anyone found Woody's hat yet?
08:20Keep looking, man! Stick deeper!
08:23Negatory! Still searching!
08:25The long gnome next door says it's not in the yard, but he'll keep looking.
08:29Still, we didn't see Andy's Super Nintendo come to life in that film.
08:33Lilypad is self-aware, though, establishing tech as living toys.
08:37Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you. Sleep mode, you know? No? Eh, forget it.
08:43I was just gonna hop on the charger. Battery could use a little refresh.
08:46Of course, there's still some grey territory.
08:49Like, would the Roomba gain sentience if Bonnie played with it?
08:52Number 3. Will Jessie reunite with Emily?
08:55Before the film's release, it was reported that Toy Story 5 would be a Jessie-centric film,
09:00returning her to Emily's house.
09:02This sparked theories that Jessie might reunite with a grown-up Emily.
09:05Woody, I, I don't know, I...
09:08Wouldn't you give anything just to have one more day with Emily?
09:11Come on, Jessie.
09:13The film doesn't go in this direction, revealing that Emily moved from the ranch years ago.
09:17Now, Blaze and her family are making memories there.
09:20We've been down a long time, too.
09:22Oh, but look! I can show you how first and second grade went!
09:25Yeah, yeah, yeah, please do that, yeah.
09:26Look at her!
09:27She's so much older!
09:28I know, right?
09:29She's adorable!
09:30The filmmakers did consider bringing Emily back, though.
09:33According to co-writer Kenna Harris,
09:36they conceived a climax where an elderly Emily introduces Jessie to her grandbaby.
09:40The filmmakers went with another emotional climax,
09:43conveying how Jessie influenced Emily's life even in her absence.
09:46If Emily didn't come back in this film,
09:49chances are we won't see her again.
09:51Emily and Jessie will always have playtime, however.
09:54Through the summer and the fall
09:57We had each other, that was all
10:02Just she and I together
10:05Like it was meant to be
10:08Number 2.
10:11Why does Buzz freeze?
10:12Here's a question that goes all the way back to the original Toy Story.
10:16You actually think you're the Buzz Lightyear?
10:20Oh, all this time I thought it was an act.
10:23Hey guys, look!
10:25It's the real Buzz Lightyear!
10:27You're mocking me, aren't you?
10:29If Buzz thinks he's a space ranger,
10:31why would he freeze as Andy writes his name on his foot
10:33and Sid sticks a dart on his helmet?
10:35Wouldn't he use his laser like he did upon meeting Woody?
10:39Even as kids, we questioned this logic.
10:41The filmmakers did too,
10:43although they ultimately figured it didn't matter.
10:45Are you saying you want to lodge a complaint with Star Command?
10:47Oh, okay.
10:49Well, so you want to do it the hard way, huh?
10:52For those who just won't let this plot hole go,
10:54Toy Story 5 finally provides insight.
10:57When they encounter a human for the first time,
10:59a group of Buzzes suddenly freezes.
11:02They aren't sure why,
11:03but something tells them to steer clear of humans.
11:05What seems like survival instinct is actually the toy inside.
11:10You are a cool toy!
11:16As a matter of fact, you're too cool.
11:18Number 1.
11:20Is Emily Andy's mom?
11:21Excuse me, can I help you?
11:23Yes, you can help take his paws off my pal.
11:26I'll give you 50 cents for all this junk.
11:28Oh, now, how did this get down here?
11:30Just enter the sheriff, nice and easy.
11:32Very well.
11:33Five dollars.
11:34I'm sorry, it's an old family toy.
11:35For over a decade,
11:37one of the most popular Toy Story theories
11:39has been that Andy's mom is Emily.
11:41While there were some interesting parallels,
11:44Toy Story 5 disproves this theory.
11:46Not only does Emily now have red hair in flashbacks,
11:49but she also has a daughter,
11:51and her name isn't Molly.
11:52Molly, out of my room.
11:54Three more days and it's mine.
11:56Molly, you're not off the hook either.
11:58You have more toys than you know what to do with.
12:00So, that's the end of that theory.
12:02But we wanted to share an idea
12:04at MankeyBusiness2402
12:06left in the comments in another video.
12:08Some other folks might be a little bit smarter than I am.
12:12Bigger and stronger too.
12:15Maybe.
12:16Based on an aforementioned deleted scene,
12:19Emily is old enough to have a grandchild.
12:21So what if it turns out that Emily's actually Andy's grandmother?
12:25We still don't know Mrs. Davis' first name,
12:27meaning it could be Jessie.
12:29It's a question that Toy Story 6 can answer.
12:32Well, whatever happens,
12:34at least we'll all be together.
12:36For infinity and beyond.
12:38Do you have any questions you hope to see answered in future sequels?
12:42Let us know in the comments.
