00:00let me ask you something about coaching you is one of the big regrets for you not being able to
00:06coach not just grambling but to get an opportunity because you were denied that opportunity for
00:11whatever ever at kentucky people don't realize that you were in line to get that job at kentucky
00:17doug is that one of the things that you wish that you could have had the opportunity
00:21to coach at a program like that yeah that's that's the only opportunity that
00:27you know i i had during that time and i can never forget the interview uh that i had with
00:33uh
00:33bono bonhart who was the um ad at that particular time and uh he asked me he asked me a
00:41question
00:42you know about you know being the coach at kentucky i told him what i thought i could do i
00:47thought i
00:48get in some households that a lot of coaches wouldn't been able to get into but i also posed
00:53the question to him too dan and then the question i posed to him was he had um what's the
00:59smith was
01:00the basketball coach um and then he had a black women's basketball coach so he had two black coaches
01:06in basketball and i asked him i said the question here how would you have the press conference if
01:13i'm the coach with a black quarterback and two black basketball coaches and he couldn't answer it
01:19you know and kind of left and stunned but i also found out that the ad had worked with um
01:26rich brooks who
01:28got the job when he was at oregon he worked down then so it was one of those it was
01:34one of those
01:34back room deals that was already discussed before the interview me basically that's what it came down
01:39to so you was just window dressing then you really never were given the opportunity to really become
01:45a coach especially in the southeastern conference like that yeah and you know and i had a reporter
01:51that called me that the next morning because i mean everybody thought i was going to get the job
01:55but a reporter called me and told me it had went left and this way this is the way it's
01:59going you
01:59know what nothing i can do about that you know my dad always taught me that's water up on the
02:03bridge
02:04and there's waters on the bridge and nothing you can do i gotta ask you this last question about what
02:09we're watching with this caitlin clark how you think it's being handled you hear the word racism
02:14being thrown around on that side what do you make of that whole story inside of a minute how do
02:20you
02:20think you're seeing this story play out well you know dan you know growing up in the south where i
02:26grew up you know you got a superstar kid and caitlin clark you got a lot of superstars black kids
02:33that
02:33is in this league and when you do something to the white kid that superstar people start talking about
02:40racism that's not what it is if you watch the nba and the wmba it's it's a tough tough game
02:46and i heard
02:46you talk about michael jordan i just looked at some highlights the other day i'm trying to figure
02:50out how might michael jordan even survived the league they tried to kill michael jordan you know
02:55and he black so it ain't it ain't about black and white it's about the game
