00:48Aircraft opening, rate at 6-0
00:51Go on, sir
00:53Reconnaissance?
00:53Yes, and now we know where we are
00:56Now they know where we are
00:58Revert to defense stations
01:00Fall out from action stations, revert to NBCD State 2 Condition Zulu
01:28Revolutions 1-1-2
01:29Revolutions 1-1-2
01:331-1-2, revolution 7-0, Peter, sir
01:36Very good
01:36Well, it's getting warm, Palfrey
01:39I suppose so, sir
01:41No quickening of the blood, Peter?
01:43Not that I've noticed, sir
01:46Why, just to be young and a Royal Marine
01:49Scared me stiff
01:52Well, there's still plenty of action before this lot's over
01:55That is why I'm here, sir
02:09We want to sell the chairs, is that all right?
02:11Oh, sure, sure
02:12And we only lash them down during an action station, you know
02:15Save them for floating about and maybe jamming the pumps
02:18Oh, you guys coming for some grub?
02:20Yeah, we'll go later, sir
02:21Well, you better go while you can
02:22Oh?
02:24Ah, well, if they call action stations again, you'll be on action messing
02:27You know, mugs of soup and huggies
02:29Oh, we don't mind that
02:30Oh, well, I do
02:31I'm too old for picnics
02:33Yeah, what was that aircraft?
02:35Eh, reconnaissance, they reckon
02:36Oh, I wonder if we're on that soon, then
02:38I expect so
02:44Eh, what's that, sir?
02:45Where's the place I've been?
02:46What, fine?
02:48That's what the Royal Marines are for
02:50Cause we're in every action since the last war
02:52Are you boasting or complaining?
02:55It's a fact, that's all
02:56Makes me glad I joined the Navy
02:58Right again!
02:59Oh, God
03:03Yes, master
03:03If you had moved any slower at action stations
03:06That aircraft would have run out of fuel before you got there
03:09I've got a bad leg, master
03:10Eh?
03:11I fell down the ladder
03:12I don't care if it's cut off at the knee
03:14At action stations, you move
03:17And smartly
03:20All right?
03:22Very well?
03:23Yes, master
03:42Come on, come on, come on, tell us about all this action then
03:47Come on, Lowe's
03:48All your good boys driving this flaming thing
03:52Now look, hear me
04:08Well, you stood down the defense state, Tom
04:10I heard the pipe
04:11Action stations
04:13Tell you, some of these young lads move faster than nothing here
04:16Slow it closing up
04:17This time, yeah
04:19My God, next time they won't be
04:21Or some heads will roll
04:23So now they know we're on our way
04:24And how could they miss us?
04:26Siding so near the coast by day
04:28Aye, there is that
04:30Funny idea, going in without any air cover
04:33Well, I suppose they know what they're doing
04:34Well, I have to hope they do, even if they don't
04:36I'm in
04:37Saw your young Mr. Palfrey up top
04:39Oh, yes
04:40Hmm, seasick
04:42I heard he was prone to
04:43You've, uh, not soldiered with him before then?
04:46No, he's just out of training
04:47That place near Exeter
04:48It's been a nightmare
04:50You've been there?
04:51No, but, uh, I've heard about it
04:53That's enough
04:54At my age
04:57Did you know his father was boy, Palfrey?
05:00Ah
05:01Youngest brigadier in the British Army
05:04General at 42
05:05Got everything but the VC they took
05:06Yeah, I know all that, but
05:08Why did he join the Marines then
05:09When he's got so much going for him in the brown jobs?
05:12Get away from the old fella, maybe
05:13Hmm
05:14Tip off the old block, though, I bet
05:16It's a funny thing
05:18Hmm
05:20I don't know whether he is or not
05:23Excellent, gentlemen, please sit down
05:31Now you're all familiar with the general picture
05:32Well, the international situation has worsened
05:34We've received our orders
05:36Hero has now been given a more specific role
05:38But before I tell you about that
05:40The First Lieutenant will bring you up to date
05:41On the background
05:43Thank you, number one
05:43Sir
05:46Right, the invasion is now 24 hours old
05:49However, the invading forces are being contained
05:56My intelligence thinks it's a straightforward test of NATO solidarity
05:59Remember, there have been a lot of question marks recently
06:01Against the strength of purpose of the Atlantic Alliance
06:03The attack was a surprise
06:05Oh, the attack itself, yes, but not its location
06:08We've always known that NATO is least defensible on its northern flank
06:11And the invasion of Norway is no real test to a well-mobilized enemy
06:17Now, there was no declaration of war on Norway
06:20And it's to our advantage to keep things at a low profile
06:23So far, no strategic or tactical nuclear weaponry
06:26Has been used by either side
06:27And our brief is that we do nothing
06:29That would escalate the conflict beyond conventional warfare
06:34The immediate NATO objective is to retake the Norwegian coast
06:38Get control of the seaports
06:40And the airfields
06:44At present, the UK is exposed to the threat of heavy conventional bombing
06:48And the US airbases at Keflavik and Tule are also at immediate risk
06:53Now, are there any questions thus far?
06:57No? Thank you, sir
06:59Right
07:01As those of you who've seen the latest signals will know
07:03A large-scale amphibious assault has been ordered for 23.30 tomorrow night
07:08On a beach on the northern coast
07:13Norsen Beach, here
07:15Troops and Royal Marine Commanders will land up from the assault craft
07:18Under cover of naval gunfire support from the Phoebe, Juno, two USN destroyers
07:23And ourselves
07:24Any air support will be given by the Ark Royal and the USS Enterprise
07:29But they won't be joining the main task force until tomorrow midday
07:33Now, the success of this landing
07:37Depends very large on our getting the troops ashore
07:39Without the enemy knowing about it too far in advance
07:43As matters stand at the moment
07:45They would know
07:46This beach
07:49Is commanded by a radar station on top of the cliffs
07:52Approximately
07:53Here, right, pilot?
07:55As far as I can judge, sir, yes
07:57Now, we must assume this radar is capable of picking up the task force
08:00Within at least 50 miles
08:02Giving the enemy plenty of time to prepare for us
08:05So it has to be immobilized
08:08Now, it's well camouflaged
08:09And we can't take it out from the air without considerable risk
08:12To civilian communities in the area
08:15So it has to be a ground attack
08:19Now, unfortunately, the enemy know that too
08:22And they know we're around
08:23So they'll be expecting us to put ashore a small commando unit
08:26To attack that station under cover of darkness
08:30So we're going to try and bluff them
08:32We should put the waiting party ashore under cover of darkness
08:35But they won't attack until the morning
08:39Tomorrow morning
08:40Moreover, instead of using a beach
08:42And an encirclement around the hill
08:46They're going to make a frontal attack
08:49By climbing the cliffs
08:53Now, these cliffs are sheer
08:54And it's reasonable to suppose that the enemy will think of them as a natural defense
08:58But then, they don't know too much about the Royal Marine Commanders
09:04The raid will be led by Lieutenant Palfrey here
09:07Who has joined us with his little team for this express purpose
09:10Sir, we're going to have to close the coast to drop them
09:13That radar station will pick us up on the way
09:15Pilot, thank you, sir
09:19Yes, the radar station will pick us up
09:23That's unavoidable, but we can do quite a lot to confuse them
09:26We'll drop the Marines at ten miles from the coast
09:28At half an hour before first light
09:31With the Gemini, this means they'll hit the beach at first light
09:33And be able to see what they're doing when they tackle those cliffs
09:35But for an hour before and for some time afterwards
09:37We will be navigating a box
09:40Here, conducting a square search
09:42What for?
09:43A good question
09:44I hope those radar operators will be asking the same thing
09:46I don't know what they'll take from it
09:48Whether we've lost a man overboard
09:50Whether we're laying mines
09:51Whether we're sending a series of complicated signals to a submerged submarine
09:54I don't care if they think we've gone mad
09:57We will stop at various points for varying lengths of time
09:59On one of these occasions, we'll drop the Marines and the Gemini into the water
10:02We'll be at action stations throughout
10:04And, John, we must have the A.S. plot on top line at all times
10:07We're inviting a submarine to take a free shot
10:10Sir
10:10Now, there are several possible snags
10:13If for any reason you lose your outboard motor on the way in
10:16Well, it's a long paddle and you won't hit the beach till way after first light
10:19Well, the motor's been checked
10:20Tell me, is there any chance that the radar station will pick up the Gemini?
10:24No real chance, but by the same score
10:26We won't know if you've stopped or got into any trouble
10:27You won't have a radio
10:29The enemy would pick that up
10:30No, we shan't stop
10:31Just put us down in the Gemini, we shall do the rest
10:34Also, from the chart, it seems as if he'd come to be landing amongst rocks
10:37That's all right
10:38Now, have you any aerial photographs?
10:40No, they've been taken, we haven't received them yet
10:43In that case, how far do you estimate the radar station to be from the cliff top?
10:46Oh, that's the other snag
10:47I think it's about 400 yards
10:50Here's a tracing of it
10:51It's not exactly ordnance survey
10:52Thank you
10:54I think that's all at this stage, sir
11:05You can verify that all your men are capable of getting up that cliff
11:08No problem, sir
11:10You'll discuss the plan with your senior NCO
11:12I shall brief him when we've finished here, yes, sir
11:16And on getting to the top of the cliff
11:47We shall find the radar station and blow it up
11:48We have no submarines in the immediate vicinity
11:50And we have no SBS personnel to call for
11:53Lieutenant Palfrey and his men will be undertaking a dangerous mission
11:57We ourselves will be exposed to air and submarine attack
12:01And any other nasties that the enemy may care to dream up
12:05But that's what it's all about
12:08And we are here to spearhead the main assault
12:10There's a lot of people counting on us
12:12So let's keep our fingers out
12:14Has anything else, Palfrey?
12:17No, sir, I'm happy
12:19After the bang
12:21We won't be going to pick you up
12:23We'll be pushing our luck too far
12:25You'll lie low when you've completed the operation
12:27And join up with the main task force
12:28When they attack tomorrow night
12:30Yes, sir
12:32Right
12:33Palfrey, no doubt you'll want to complete your final office pilot
12:35You'll make a final check on our approach to the coast
12:37And if you'll both report to me
12:38In half an hour, I'll make a last check on everything
12:40There you go
12:41Perhaps you'll join us, number one
12:42Aye, aye, sir
12:43Right, thank you, gentlemen
12:44Yes, sir
12:58Chief Jones
12:59Yes, sir
13:00Take away the stop now, please
13:03Palfrey's a life-size action, man
13:05Oh, they all are
13:05I'm just gathered on our side
13:06Just put us down anyway
13:08He's a wrong Marine, sir
13:10I gladly agreed to use the Germany
13:11I thought he was going to say he could walk on water
13:13Oh, don't
13:20Yes
13:21High-intention signal for C&C
13:23Oh, yes
13:24Weather report's in
13:25Oh
13:26Apart from an early morning mist
13:27It's going to be a good day, you'll be glad to learn
13:30Well, let's hope it's a good day for Palfrey
13:34Everybody's suitably impressed with our Mr. Palfrey
13:36Our general consensus of Wardrum opinion is that he's a cross between Superman and Genghis Khan
13:42When he gets to shore, he may have to be, and it looks to be pretty rough terrain
13:47He'll have a fair chance
13:50He'll have a fighting chance
13:52And no one can ask for more in this situation
13:55We're very exposed in that cliff face
13:58You're going to feel even more exposed when he gets to the top
14:01If he does
14:03Still, Palfrey seems pretty confident, and after all, he is the Marine commanding officer
14:08Yes
14:10He's all at 23, isn't he?
14:18Well, Sergeant, what do you think?
14:19Can we get up those cliffs?
14:20We've got a cliff climber with us, sir
14:22There's no reason why not
14:23Sit down, Sergeant
14:27You don't seem very enamoured of the plan
14:29Well, it's daylight, that's all
14:30That's a whole idea, a surprise
14:32Yes, well, I've been on daylights before, sir
14:33And there's always been more daylight than surprise
14:35Well, that's not our problem
14:38Do you see any real snags on the plan?
14:40Well, I reckon we're bound to be sussed once we're on top, sir
14:42There might not spot us before them from the blockhouse
14:45But once we're on top, we're in full view of them, sir
14:47Look, Sergeant
14:49This is the only plan I've been given
14:51As far as the terrain is concerned, I don't know my head from a hole in the ground, nor do
14:54you
14:55There may be cover up there on top of the cliffs
14:56On the other hand, there may not be
14:58I am told, however, that there should be 400 yards between the clifftop
15:01And the radar station
15:03So there should be some cover
15:05We'll just have to go and see and take it from there
15:07Yes, sir
15:08What do you mean, yes, sir?
15:09I mean, I agree with you, sir
15:12Fine
15:13I want you to recheck the engine in the chimney
15:15And make absolutely certain about the climbing gear, all right?
15:17Yes, sir
15:19Sir, the explosive
15:21I shall be carrying them
15:22You'll carry it, sir
15:24And cheer up, man, sir
15:25Chance to show them what we can do
15:27Show who, sir?
15:28Sir
15:28I'll see you in theiguå°†
15:34I'll see you in the middle
15:34I really like
15:34There has to go
15:47There's a high-veld
15:47I can take it
15:47I can take it
15:47I can take it
15:48I can do it
15:49You're gonna have to go
15:49But you're gonna have to close it
15:56I can take it
16:13how goes it okay that's the plan
16:19you happy yes it'll work
16:23I thought you said it was okay double checking
16:29treble checking if I know you all right but if there's a strong tide against them
16:34and the Germany isn't making 20 knots porphyry be caught in the open sea in daylight
16:40that's a thought if anything goes wrong I don't want it to be my fault not on this job
16:45that's the topic with the booties what give you a conscience that's so damn deficient
16:51well if porphyry's anything to go by he'll run through brick walls for the sheer hell of it
16:54maybe he likes doing things the hard way
16:57why when it's not necessary
17:01still I'm glad it's him going ashore not me
17:04yes
17:09time's getting on I'll go and dig him out
17:15by the way you hear who his father was
17:19no
17:21boy porphyry
17:22general boy porphyry
17:36no
17:37there you are
17:37yeah
17:40what time you see the captain
17:43yes
17:47reading
17:50my father
17:51diaries
17:52he gave them to me when I joined just before he died
17:55he always kept them you know
17:57even on the night before inaction
18:01Alamain's here
18:02so is D-Day
18:04all beautifully written not even a tremor
18:08just look at them
18:10reading Seaman Patterson
18:12SCR
18:18you're lucky
18:20all my old man kept was a duffel coat for the garden
18:23what was he
18:25a flag officer I'm afraid
18:26oh
18:28then you know how it is
18:31sorry
18:33famous father
18:34all that
18:36it's boring
18:38very very boring
18:42I had a lot of trouble at school with it
18:45my trouble was at home
18:47oh
18:50yes well I can believe that
18:54still
18:55it's interesting though
18:56what action were you reading about
18:58his thoughts
18:59on the first time he ever went into action
19:01Belgian border 1940
19:04it's a bit of a shambles isn't it
19:06yeah
19:08yes it was
19:10even he was in a shambles
19:12once
19:14odd to think of that
19:21well
19:22I better get going
19:25Captain will be waiting
19:28you ready
19:29yes of course
19:51yes
19:52ah come in
19:57well Paul
19:58we thought about the plan
19:59discussed it with your sergeant
20:00yes sir I have
20:01and
20:01no problems
20:04there's nothing you'd like to ask
20:05yes sir seems quite straightforward
20:08well I'm glad you think so
20:09pilot
20:10well this might help
20:11I've had another look at the contours
20:12and
20:13I think there may be some dead ground
20:14between the
20:15radar station and top of the cliffs
20:17well we'll just have to wait and see it won't we
20:20I think we have to go straight for the radar station and blow it simple as that
20:22I mean it isn't as if it's miles away is it
20:25no
20:30so no problems
20:31no sir
20:33nothing rocks
20:35the cliffs
20:36perfectly satisfied in every way
20:38so I think we can assume that our approach won't be mined
20:41it's just a matter of getting to the radar station
20:43the job is to knock the thing out we shall knock it out
20:49this is your first raid of this kind
20:53is that
20:54relevance
20:57no perhaps not
20:59all right good luck Peter
21:00sir
21:07a lot of trouble to wear that damn thing out for him
21:09we can't help him now well
21:11well he needn't have been quite so offhand
21:13I have a lot of sympathy for Paul for him
21:15actually
21:17excuse me sir
21:24what do you think
21:27he'll be all right
21:33what a stupid game
21:37oh what are you doing Sergeant
21:39we go tonight land by Jimmy
21:40oh good I don't like hanging about
21:41we've got a cliff needs climbing
21:43in darkness
21:43no it'll be first light as we hit the shore
21:45we climb and attack in daylight
21:46right
21:47so I want you up first and ropes down for the lads
21:49all right who gets the explosion
21:50Mr. Palfrey
21:51that's not usual is it
21:52it's Mr. Palfrey's decision
21:54well don't he trust no one else with it
21:57oh yeah I think everything's ready now Sergeant
21:59right now then Mr. Palfrey will be down to brief you all before we go
22:02and don't forget he doesn't like stupid questions
22:06here Sergeant
22:08how is Mr. Palfrey
22:09he's all right why
22:10not seasick
22:12look I don't know how this rumor got around about Mr. Palfrey being seasick
22:15but let me tell you this
22:16all of you
22:17we have a fine young officer in Mr. Palfrey
22:19he passed out very high in training
22:21and he comes from the right background
22:24all right I know it's his first job but he's the man who can do it
22:27so if I hear any more comments about seasickness or anything of that sort
22:31the person responsible will be answerable to me
22:34understood
22:37now lads I know you and you know me
22:38let's do this job the marines way
22:42oh I really walked into that one didn't I
22:44right
22:44oh you often you're on a show then
22:47what time are you going
22:49you'll be told if you need to know
22:50hey you're joking
22:51nobody ever tells me anything
22:52probably isn't worth the effort
22:56oh why
22:57well if you guys are so clever
22:59how come you get all the dirty jobs
23:01responsible jobs

28:34Good.
28:36Well done, Bob.

29:18Yes, sir.
29:45Another half mile, Sergeant.
30:07Well, there it is.

30:12Corporal.
30:13Let's get up this thing.
30:15Well, Corporal, what do you think?
30:17Blimey.
30:17Well, come on, man.
30:18Can you or can't you?
30:19Yeah, I think we can manage that all right, sir.
30:21All right, let's get on with it.
30:46There.
31:01Come on, come on, don't take old Dave.
31:41All right, Nichols.
32:10All right, Nichols.
32:17All right.
33:08There it is, sir.
33:09And a sentry.
33:15I'll never have a chance of rushing that, sir.
33:17No, it's much too close.
33:19Lars got it all wrong.
33:22Right, here's what we'll do.
33:23Sergeant, take Neatle along the cliff to your right.
33:25The Corporal and I will get in closer to the other side.
33:28Then what, sir?
33:29Well, wait ten minutes until we're in the position of cut wires, that sort of thing.
33:33Then I want you to create a diversion.
33:35What sort of diversion, sir?
33:36Well, just reveal yourselves, draw their fire, distract them.
33:38You ought to be the decoy.
33:40Are we, sir?
33:41Yes.
33:41But be careful.
33:43With any luck, it'll give me the chance I need.
33:47Right.
33:49In ten minutes...
33:53from...
33:55Now, get going.
33:57Come on.
33:59Come on.
35:31There's the sentry.
35:36We'll time him.
35:38And you cover me while I make the running.
35:40What?
35:41Hell is another one.
35:43Let's hope that diversion works.
35:55Let's get this bloody wire cut.
35:58Stand back.
36:09Let's go.
36:12Let's go.
36:25Let's go.
36:45Stand by to move.

40:58I don't know.
41:03I don't know.
41:04I don't know.
41:05You should know about rank.
41:07Rank has to be earned, Mr. Balfrey.
41:09You should know that.
41:13Sir, Major.
41:17so i'll ask you once again is this to be a full-scale landing or just a small commander force
41:25come now lieutenant answer me what is to be gained by keeping all this to yourself
41:36oh that frigate it kept us guessing all night very clever very imaginative
41:41that part of the mission went absolutely to plan but only when your force came ashore when you were
41:47in absolute command that things began to go wrong is that not so so what time will the main force
41:55make
41:55its landing and in what strength after all lieutenant what does it matter now my dear fellow
42:07you know you behave very foolishly i speak not personally purely in a military sense sure your
42:13sergeant must have suggested that you go around the edge of the cliff and that way we may never
42:17seen you at all so he told you nobody told me anything but directly both your parties move
42:25forward we could see you why didn't you go around the back of us the blind side it was so
42:32obvious
42:32any experienced soldier must have seen it
42:40get the lieutenant some coffee will you
42:50did your sergeant suggest that
43:03if you're taking the advice of an older man an experienced soldier
43:07your mission might have been extremely successful instead you went for glory or would that be too
43:16strong a way of putting it that in your particular case is perfectly understandable is it not
43:24your name lieutenant palfrey very distinguished one
43:31never mind we can never live up to the image of our fathers
43:36as if freud said something about that we constantly fail them at least in our own eyes
43:46the
43:48the
43:48the
43:51the
43:52the
43:56the
43:57the
44:27Roger, report all contacts to me as you get them.
44:29Roger, sir.
44:31Yes.
44:34Yes, Derek.
44:37As a safeguard signal, sir, our part in the exercise has been cancelled.
44:42Cancelled?
44:43Why?
44:45According to this, Lieutenant Palfrey has killed a Norwegian officer during interrogation
44:49and went away.
44:50What?
44:52Well, we're ordered into Lowick, sir, but they want you ashore as soon as possible.
44:58Right.
44:59Well, you'll have to take her in, Derek.
45:02Pipe flying stations.
45:03Aye, sir.
45:04Let's go.
45:04Stop.
45:17Keep running.
45:48I've never been to Lowick.
45:50I've never been to Norway before.
45:52It's a good alongside.
45:55Our captain would have been twice as fast.
45:58He'll be doing some fast talking ashore.
46:01If the Norwegians are prepared to listen,
46:04they're gonna want blood for this.
46:07Poor Palfrey.
46:09It's too late to be sorry for him, Bob.
46:12He's had it now.
46:17The weather is holding.
46:19Not sure if that's good or bad.
46:24General Turing, you were talking about the police.
46:27Yes.
46:28The police have asked for army assistance in the manhunt.
46:31We have armed patrols.
46:33Armed patrols?
46:34He has already killed a man.
46:36Oh, yes, sir, but...
46:36Revolvers only.
46:38The request was for riflemen, but I overruled it.
46:41They are upset, you see.
46:46Thank you, sir.
46:47For enough cigar.
46:52You a smoke?
46:54No, thank you, sir.
46:56You know Palfrey, obviously.
46:59He came from your ship.
47:01He was on temporary attachment to HMS Heroes, sir,
47:03for the duration of the exercise.
47:05Hmm.
47:07There was something said, uh...
47:10Ah, yes.
47:11He is the son of a war hero, no?
47:14Uh, yes, sir.
47:15The late General Palfrey.
47:17Boy Palfrey of Saint Nazaire fame.
47:19Of course.
47:20A fine officer.
47:22A pity the son should blight the name.
47:26General Turing, we don't yet know all the facts.
47:29The facts are perfectly clear.
47:32Palfrey struck down an innocent man.
47:35He is now a criminal, Commander.
47:37A criminal on the run.
