00:00America's Largest Wolves, Size, Survival, and the Wild Spaces They Roam
00:05When people talk about the largest wolves in America, the wording can get messy fast.
00:11There are wolf species, there are subspecies, there are regional populations, and there
00:19are local packs that simply grow larger because the habitat, prey, and climate allow it.
00:24The gray wolf is the giant of them all.
00:27It is the largest wild member of the dog family, and can reach impressive size, especially
00:34in northern regions.
00:35The northwestern wolf, also called the Mackenzie Valley wolf, is often considered one of the
00:41biggest gray wolf subspecies in North America.
00:44In Alaska and the far northwest, these wolves can be massive, built for cold, distance,
00:50and big prey.
00:52Alaskan interior wolves also rank among America's largest, shaped by huge landscapes, moose,
00:58caribou, and brutal winters.
00:59Northern Rocky Mountain wolves are another powerful group, roaming places like Montana,
01:05Idaho, and Wyoming, where elk and deer shape their lives.
01:09The Great Plains wolf, historically tied to the central United States and parts of the
01:14Midwest, helped define the classic American timber wolf image.
01:19The Mexican gray wolf is smaller, but it is still one of the most important wolves in the
01:24country.
01:25Found in the southwest, it is rare, endangered, and slowly recovering after nearly vanishing.
01:30The red wolf is not as large as the biggest gray wolves, but it deserves a place, because
01:36it is one of America's rarest wild canids, surviving through one of the most difficult recovery stories
01:41in conservation.
01:43Then, there are Great Lakes wolves, powerful animals moving through forests of Minnesota,
01:48Wisconsin, and Michigan.
01:50And finally, dispersing California and Pacific Northwest wolves are rewriting the map, proving
01:56that wolves can still return to places where they were erased.
02:00The largest wolves are not just measured in pounds.
02:03They are measured in territory, sake, in survival, in controversy, and in the wild spaces America
02:12still has left for them.
