00:01If you receive a text that has three simple, seemingly harmless words,
00:06would you kindly?
00:09Remember, it's a huge red flag.
00:12In fact, if even just one of the words, kindly,
00:15pops up in a text from an unknown number,
00:18there's a huge chance scammers are after you.
00:22Tim Bajarin, a technology expert with 40 years of experience,
00:26explains that it's all because people in the U.S. don't often use the word kindly in everyday language.
00:32You're more likely to hear or read kindly in countries that were once under British influence,
00:37like Nigeria or India.
00:40There, English isn't the main language.
00:43There's a huge chance that someone living in one of those countries
00:46and probably sitting in a boiler room full of tricksters sent you the message.
00:51Same goes for help messages.
00:53Scammers often pretend to be tech support,
00:56saying there's an issue on your device and they'll help you fix it.
01:00But it's really a trick.
01:02Anti-fraud experts warn that if you get any message that you didn't ask for,
01:07whether it's a text, robocall, social media message, or email,
01:11it's smart to be extra careful.
01:13If you didn't start the conversation, it might be someone trying to trick you.
01:18Scammers know people are getting better at spotting tricks,
01:20so they've changed their approach.
01:22They use AI to have perfect grammar and spelling.
01:26They might start with a friendly message like,
01:28Did I miss you today?
01:29Or, Hi, how are you?
01:31Or, I'll be late for the meeting.
01:33If you reply to these messages to say they've got the wrong person,
01:37or ask who they are, they'll try to fool you somehow.
01:40Scammers use these friendly openers to build trust and pretend to be nice.
01:45Once they win over your attention, they might ask you to invest in something like cryptocurrency.
01:51Or, say, they're in trouble and ask for gift cards.
01:54But it's all a trick.
01:56The best you can do with any random message you didn't expect,
01:59whether it's a text or email, is to just delete it.
02:03If the message says it's from someone important, like your bank or the IRS,
02:08don't click on any links or open attachments.
02:11If you're unsure whether the message is real,
02:14you should log in directly to your account at the official website,
02:18not through any links in the message.
02:20Another safe thing you can do is call the bank or company using their official phone number
02:25to check if they really were trying to contact you.
02:28It's important to report scam messages because law enforcement can use the information
02:33to see how big the problem is and put more effort into solving it.
02:39Another big scam that's happening more and more lately is the pig butchering scheme.
02:44But don't worry, no pigs are involved.
02:47It's called that because scammers spend some time fattening up their target first.
02:52They start talking to you on social media or a dating app
02:56and become friends or even act like they're interested in a relationship with you.
03:01They chat and get close over weeks or months.
03:04And then, once you trust them,
03:06the scammer suggests investing in something that sounds promising.
03:10It could be a new cryptocurrency or a special stock trading site.
03:14When you invest a lot of money, hoping to make even more,
03:18the scammer then butchers the relationship and disappears with all the money.
03:22So, you gotta double-check any online investment opportunity
03:26and try not to share too much personal information with new online friends.
03:31Now, in a job offer scam, you might get an email about a job that sounds interesting,
03:37even though you didn't apply for it.
03:39Here, you need to remember the golden rule of safe online surfing.
03:43If the offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
03:47The job is often something unusual, like being a mystery shopper
03:51or a position that doesn't require any special skills.
03:54If you say yes, your new employer will send you a check or money order to pay you.
04:00But the amount will be way more than they promised.
04:03They then tell you to keep part of the money and send the extra back to them.
04:07And here comes the trick.
04:09That check or money order they sent you was fake.
04:11So, when you send them the extra money, you're actually sending them your own money.
04:16And once you realize the check was fake, it's too late.
04:20Scammers use this trick a lot, especially on popular job sites.
04:24So, it's important to be careful and double-check any job offer that seems suspicious.
04:32If you receive a phone call from someone who works for Microsoft or another big tech company
04:38and offers to make your computer faster, don't get too excited.
04:42If you accept the offer, they will send you an email
04:45and you'll click on a link to download a program that lets you control your computer from far away.
04:51Once they're in, they can put malware on your computer,
04:54which lets them see your files and steal important personal information.
04:58To stay safe from these kinds of scams, ignore unasked-for advice from strangers.
05:04Real companies won't call you to fix your computer out of nowhere.
05:07And please, never allow remote access to your computer unless you know and trust the person.
05:13If someone calls you, ask questions to make sure they're who they say they are.
05:18Scammers often give up if they see you're being cautious.
05:23Now, sometimes scammers will make fake quizzes or surveys to trick people into giving away their personal information.
05:30These quizzes might start with fun, harmless questions.
05:33And once you get hooked, they'll ask you for personal details, like your address, birthday, or even bank information.
05:40They often promise rewards or prizes to make people feel comfortable sharing more.
05:45But the real goal is to gather information that could be used for identity theft or fraud.
05:50To stay safe, only trust surveys from websites or companies you know.
05:55Look them up if you're unsure.
05:57If the quiz suddenly redirects or opens more windows, that's usually a sign of something suspicious.
06:03Some quizzes ask for access to unnecessary personal info.
06:07Be cautious and say no if it feels strange.
06:11Now, another form of scam is voice phishing.
06:14When someone pretends to be an official over the phone and asks you to provide your data.
06:19Always check with your bank, hospital, or whoever the scammers pretend to be if they really need your data.
06:26It can also be a robocall that asks you to contact some phone number to claim your prize.
06:31The robot can offer you to press a certain button to stop communication with it for good.
06:36Ignore it.
06:37You'll just sign yourself up for more robocalls because they know you're a real person.
06:42Now, some bad guys that practice phishing are after your voice.
06:46It's as unique as your fingerprint, iris, and DNA.
06:50A simple yes or I'm listening can help frosters generate a sample of your voice.
06:55If they get that and some other data from you, they can access even more personal data and do some
07:01operations pretending to be you.
07:03AI tools can change recording of your voice seamlessly into something you never really said.
07:09So, the best you can do is hang up without saying a word.
07:15To keep your personal data safe, you gotta get creative when you answer security questions that can give you access
07:22to your account when you forget your password.
07:25Don't select the same security questions across multiple sites.
07:29If one answer is leaked, then they'll have access to all your accounts.
07:34If someone's after your data, they can easily find out the name of your elementary school, favorite food, or pet.
07:40So, don't give away these clues online or use fictitious information as answers to your security questions to keep them
07:47unhackable.
07:49In case you have your pet's name as a password, don't share pictures of it signed with that name.
07:55Invent a passphrase of random words instead of a password.
08:00But the best you can do is not use the pet's name as a password and get a special app
08:05to create a stronger password for you instead.
08:08Finally, be careful when you're shopping online or typing in some other sensitive data in public places, because shoulder surfing
08:16is a real thing.
08:18If they glance at your screen long enough at a coffee shop, in a shared workspace, or on a bus,
08:24they can easily steal credit card information, passwords, or shipping addresses.
08:29Try to position your screen in such a way that no one but you can see it.
08:33You can get a privacy screen protector or filter to be on the safe side.
08:39If you ever find yourself stuck in the trunk of your car, stay calm.
08:44All cars are supposed to be equipped with an emergency latch to help open the trunk from the inside in
08:50the unlikely case it happens.
08:52These latches are so well thought out that they can be opened by people of all ages.
08:56More so, handles are designed to glow in the dark, too.
09:00You can even pull them with a mouth if there's not enough wiggle room to use your hands.
09:05Never mind how you ended up in the trunk in the first place.
09:08Moving on!
09:09If you're ever working with needle and thread, remember you don't need to stick the needle directly into the spool.
09:15You may end up losing the needle altogether.
09:18Not to mention you can easily hurt your fingers!
09:20A lot of modern sewing kits these days come with a designated place for safeguarding the needles.
09:27It's located at the bottom part of the thread spool.
09:29You'll just need to pull it out.
09:31It's even made to hold multiple sewing needles at a time.
09:35Disposable ballpoint pens come with a little secret of their own.
09:39Did you ever notice that in some of them, there's a small hole in the plastic part?
09:44It's actually a rudimentary ventilation system.
09:47It's supposed to let the ink easily make it to the tip of the pen.
09:52Okay, I know it's in the name, but you really don't need to shake the seasoning shaker to get any
09:57product out.
09:58Don't believe me?
09:59Hey, you're not the only one.
10:01Go grab your favorite seasoning bottle out of your pantry.
10:04If it has one of those removable plastic caps, it's perfect for the experiment.
10:09Instead of shaking the bottle, try holding it from the plastic cap while it's upside down.
10:15Now, gently twist the bottle from side to side and, before you know it, you get some gorgeously flowing seasoning
10:22without having to wiggle the shaker and make a mess all over the stove.
10:27On the same note, most salt and pepper shakers should have ridges on the bottom of the glass portion.
10:33In case you get any seasoning stuck in there, place the bottom of the salt shaker against the bottom of
10:39the pepper shaker and wiggle it around so the ridges click with each other.
10:43The seasoning should easily pour out now without you having to open the bottle.
10:48In colder weather, you often have so many clothing layers on you that you can hardly feel the purse or
10:54back straps on your shoulder anymore.
10:56Not to mention how fast they can slide off.
10:59Some jackets come with a built-in solution for that, in the form of a small tab on the shoulder
11:04with either a hook or a button.
11:06It's meant to be opened and closed comfortably, so you can keep your purse in place at any time.
11:13You're most likely using it merely to peel the skin of potatoes, carrots, or cucumbers.
11:18But you can use your vegetable peeler for chopping fine strips of onion as well.
11:24Just cut the onion into quarters vertically and then start slicing.
11:28This might also help out with those embarrassing onion tears.
11:33Most people miss this one, but should you ever have a closer look at your toothpaste tube,
11:38you will surely see some sort of coloring there, either a dot or a block.
11:43Colors can vary.
11:44They can be black, green, red, or even blue.
11:47These color spots are actually meant to help the assembly machines back at the toothpaste factory.
11:53They recognize when and where these machines need to cut the toothpaste tubes and proceed to fold them for packaging.
11:59For most types of footwear, if there's anything that seems a bit out of place, always know that it's there
12:05for a reason.
12:06Most manufacturers don't put extra items on shoes just for fun.
12:11It would definitely be a waste of time and resources.
12:14For footwear, like boots, for example, there's often a small loop at the top back of the shoe.
12:19It's there to help you when you need to put the shoe on since you can quickly pull on it.
12:24Plus, you can also hang the shoes somewhere, most likely to dry, since most boots are meant to be worn
12:30in the colder weather.
12:31Now, I've been guilty at least once of overdressing with a bunch of layers, just so I won't need to
12:38jam everything in my check-in bag.
12:40But does it become a problem when you actually have to get seated?
12:44What do you do with your coat or your jacket?
12:46Well, have a closer look next time you board a plane on the seat in front of you.
12:51The hook that keeps the tray table upright can double as a jacket hook.
12:56As long as you don't need to have any meals while in the air, you're good to go.
13:01Now, most mascaras expire within 3 to 6 months, I'm told, depending on the manufacturer.
13:07But you can help speed up that process if you're not careful enough.
13:11Continuously pumping the mascara wand, trying to mix in the product, actually pushes more air into the tube.
13:18This can make it dry much faster, and you evidently won't get the desired results with it anymore.
13:24There's an easy way to check if your mascara is still good enough to use.
13:28If you don't hear a popping noise when you take the brush out, you may very well need to go
13:33get yourself a new mascara tube.
13:36Now, I know we're living in the era of Bluetooth-connected devices.
13:40But for better quality sound, they still recommend using headphones that connect via audio jacks.
13:47Remember seeing black ridges on those jacks?
13:49They aren't there just to make them fit when you plug them into your phone or laptop.
13:54Made out of a special insulating material, these bands are meant to guard the wires when sound is being transmitted.
14:01Based on the number of bands, you can figure out which end goes where.
14:05Some empty space under noodles in a cup doesn't mean the company producing them wants to cheat you out of
14:11a full portion.
14:12No, no.
14:13It's a manner of keeping the noodles intact during their transportation.
14:16It also helps with the circulation of hot water that is poured over the products before you can enjoy them.
14:23The V-shaped neckline was initially designed to serve a bunch of objectives.
14:28First, as a way of prolonging the life of the garment that would maintain its shape over the years.
14:33It's also there to fit your head through the shirt in case it needs some stretching.
14:38This way, it ensures a snugger grip around the neck.
14:40Lastly, it helps absorb sweat in case you're wearing the shirt while exercising.
14:46Now, it's not necessarily a custom anymore, but you may have stumbled upon a dinner jacket with an additional mysterious
14:53pocket on the right side.
14:55Turns out, this pocket was used by men to easily reach their train tickets, since most of them had to
15:01travel to work every day.
15:03It helped them keep their jacket buttoned up, but also benefited from the use of a pocket.
15:08Now, it's only added as a decoration, and it doesn't serve an actual purpose anymore.
15:14Speaking of things we don't use these days, or at least for their initial purpose,
15:19did you know Play-Doh was originally a cleaning product?
15:22In the 1920s, the market was in need of a product that could help them wipe the wallpapered areas around
15:29coal-burning furnaces.
15:30The recipe for what we now know as Play-Doh was thus invented.
15:35It was manufactured in white only, and was supposed to clean wallpaper by being rolled back and forth over the
15:41dirt.
15:42It was only later, in the 1940s, that new products for cleaning wallpaper were brought up,
15:48and Play-Doh was redirected toward another area of the market.
15:52Now, while I enjoy a nice piece of toast for breakfast, isn't it pesky to have to clean out the
15:58toaster?
15:58Well, not anymore, since I recently found out that toasters have a slide or a panel at the bottom
16:05that helps get rid of all those annoying breadcrumbs easily.
16:11Now, there used to be a time when you could only have access to video games
16:15by inserting cartridges in your console of choice.
16:19These tiny objects gave many doctors a lot of headaches.
16:22People soon started popping up in hospitals after swallowing small game cartridges,
16:28especially the younger generation.
16:31Nintendo, the company that manufactures the majority of these devices,
16:35had to come up with a creative solution to prevent these accidents.
16:39So, these days, Nintendo Switch cartridges are purposely coated with specific chemicals
16:44that can leave a really bad bitter taste in the mouth.
16:47Not that I'd, you know, recommend you ever try and taste for yourself.
16:52Hmm.
16:53Now, a basic sponge and baking soda can make a great eraser for little grease spots,
16:58fingerprints, and stains on your walls.
17:00Or many other painted areas, such as furniture or wood fences.
17:04Just sprinkle a bit of baking soda on your dry sponge and scrub the stain area in a circular motion.
17:10And then, use a clean dry cloth to wipe the baking soda off to get rid of any remaining dirt.
17:16If you're worried that this technique might ruin the paint,
17:19try just a bit of soda first and see how the surface reacts.
17:24If you want to extract the maximum amount of juice from your lemon or lime,
17:28put them first in a microwave for 15 seconds.
17:32After that, give them a little roll on a hard surface.
17:35And now, feel free to use your manual juicer.
17:39When you smash some glass or pottery on the floor,
17:42it can be pretty hard to notice and pick up all the tiny fragments.
17:45Especially if the glass is transparent.
17:48Guess what can help you?
17:50A slice of bread.
17:52After you remove all the big pieces,
17:54carefully wipe a thick slice of bread across the floor to pick up any tiny fragments.
17:59They should just get stuck in the bread.
18:01But make sure to do this very carefully or just put on protective gloves.
18:05And don't absentmindedly make yourself a sandwich right afterwards.
18:09Hey, just saying.
18:11If you're a huge fan of garlic, here's a tip for you.
18:14Cut one garlic bulb in half and rub an empty bowl for a nice flavor.
18:19Now, you can put your pasta, risotto, or salad in the bowl and enjoy your meal.
18:25Pringles tubes are made from a mixture of paper, plastic, and metal,
18:29which makes them a good option to organize groceries.
18:32You can paint the tubes in a plain color to make them match your stylish, minimalistic kitchen
18:37and then attach removable labels on the side.
18:41Have you ever struggled with threading a needle?
18:44Here's an easy way out.
18:45Place your toothbrush on the table and put the thread across the bristles of the brush.
18:50Now, gently push the needle down over the top.
18:53The bristles will help you poke the thread up through the eye effortlessly.
18:58Once you've got the loop, just use your fingers to pull it through.
19:02If you've got these annoying tea stains on your favorite mug that won't wash off,
19:06try to apply some toothpaste to your sponge.
19:09This is also applicable when you need to make your dirty cutlery shot.
19:13It's best to use a mildly abrasive sponge.
19:16It's pretty helpful when it comes to removing dark spots on dishes.
19:20Now, let's say you've recently received a really gorgeous bouquet.
19:24But the flowers got this sad look in a blink of an eye.
19:28You can extend their living very easily and almost free of charge.
19:32First, fill the vase or vase with fresh water and put a couple of teaspoons of sugar.
19:39This will help to nourish the flowers.
19:41Before you put the flowers back into the vase, cut about an inch off the stem.
19:45But make sure to slice it at an angle like this.
19:49This trick will increase the surface of water absorption.
19:52Repeat this with all the stems, especially with hard ones.
19:56Now put the bouquet back into the vase or vase.
19:59The flowers should cheer up within 12 hours.
20:03If you suffer from cold feet, put them into a vase or vase.
20:07Now wait!
20:08Use a hairdryer to warm up your slippers before using them.
20:11This tip is also applicable to your outdoor winter shoes.
20:16Speaking of feet, pew!
20:18There's a great way to get rid of unpleasant smells.
20:21Apply about 10 drops of your favorite essential oil on two cotton balls.
20:26Now place the balls into the shoes and leave them overnight.
20:29Remove them in the morning and enjoy the fancy smell.
20:33You can also mix a couple of your favorite fragrances to customize your shoe fragrance even more.
20:39If your drain is a bit dirty and smelly, there's an epic tip to solve this issue.
20:44Put down a couple of spoonfuls of baking soda and pour down a little vinegar.
20:49And now step back and enjoy the show.
20:51It will foam up and help loosen any dirt.
20:54We've all tried to light a match outdoors in windy weather and failed.
20:59Well, we've been doing it all wrong.
21:01There's an easy way to prepare a matchstick in advance using a sharp knife.
21:05Carefully carve back the four corners just behind the head of the matchstick.
21:10Then repeat the same technique one more time so it looks like this.
21:15These eight little splinters will help create a stronger wind-resistant flame.
21:20If you have a small wardrobe with limited space for hanging new clothes,
21:24remove some metal pull tabs from the tops of old drinking cans.
21:28They can make the perfect holding loops for fixing the second hanger.
21:32Just put the ring over the hook.
21:34This is how you can double and even triple the storage space on one hanging rail.
21:40If you need to make an emergency candle, you can use one very common item from your fridge.
21:46Have you guessed what it is?
21:47Butter.
21:48Cut off a piece of chilled butter and place it on a heat-proof dish.
21:52Poke a hole straight down through the center using a toothpick or a wooden stick.
21:57Now we need a wick.
21:58You can use a common cotton string or twine.
22:01Cut the corresponding length and poke it through the hole so it goes all the way to the bottom of
22:06your candle.
22:07Gently coat the end of the wick with butter and light up your brand new DIY candle.
22:13Use hair-straightening tongs to smooth out those annoying creases on your tie.
22:17Or let's say you're working in a shop and you have to deal with fluffy piles of cash.
22:22The tongs will help you iron your money to put them in smaller stacks, which then fit neatly into your
22:28backpack.
22:29Hey, let's not go there.
22:32Wow, this zipper is tough.
22:34Why can't it slide smoothly like all other zippers?
22:37But don't rush to throw away your coat.
22:40Grab a bar of soap and gently rub it up and down against the zipper.
22:44Repeat it on both sides.
22:48Cut one leg off your old tights and put two long cardboard tubes inside it.
22:53Go ahead and thread it under your internal door with one tube on each side.
22:58This will protect you from any draft because the tights will seal up any gap under the floor.
23:04You can also use this trick when you need to make a full blackout in the room.
23:08Just make sure to use thick black tights.
23:11Let's say you're visiting a conference in another city and your schedule will be very busy.
23:16You can prepare your outfits for each day in advance
23:20and put them into different compartments of your hanging clothes storage organizer this way.
23:25Now, put it right down into your suitcase, zip it, and you're ready to go.
23:30When you arrive at the hotel, you can just carefully pull out this organizer
23:34and hang it in the closet in just two seconds.
23:36But don't forget to take the shoes, too.
23:40Is there a way to drive a nail into a wall without hurting your fingers?
23:44The answer is yes.
23:46Grab your comb and push the nail in between the prongs.
23:50This way, you'll keep your fleshy fingers far away and safe.
23:54And once you've got it started, you can easily slide out the comb and finish driving the nail.
24:00If you need an emergency metal scrubby sponge to wash your pot or pan, use a piece of tin foil.
24:06Crumple it up into a ball, apply a little bit of dish soap, and your brand-new sponge is ready.
24:12Now, start scrubbing and get ready to be amazed.
24:15It works really well, huh?
24:17By the way, the tin foil doesn't have to be new.
24:20You can recycle the piece you've already used for cooking.
24:23And the final tip is for perfectionists.
24:26If your showerhead has a hard water buildup, the water won't come out straight.
24:31To fix this, fill a plastic bag with plain white vinegar.
24:35Then, put the showerhead inside the bag, attach it with a band, and leave it overnight.
24:41In the morning, you can give your showerhead a little scrub with an old toothbrush or clothesbrush.
24:46This should help remove the remaining hard water dirt.
24:49This trick is also applicable for faucet heads.
24:53After a bad day at work, you decide to hide yourself from the rest of the world.
24:57You turn off your phone and your laptop and lock yourself inside the bathroom.
25:02You jump out of your meditation when you hear a beeping sound.
25:05It's your toothbrush saying,
25:07Data transfer completed!
25:09Your robot vacuum knocks at the door.
25:11Looks like it must be after you.
25:13Robot vacuums make a map of your home to get around and plan cleaning better.
25:18They can share this map with other gadgets via Wi-Fi and store them in the cloud.
25:23When advertisers get access to those maps, they can get an idea of your home size,
25:28your income level, and lifestyle to send the right ads your way.
25:33Vacuums don't have microphones, but their navigation systems can be repurposed to listen to your conversations.
25:39They map the room with a laser beam directed at objects.
25:43Sound waves affect that light.
25:44If you collect that data, you can convert it back into sound waves and identify what someone said.
25:52Headphones and microphones are based on the same idea.
25:55Headphones turn electrical signals into sound, and microphones turn sound into electrical signals.
26:01If you plug your headphones into the microphone jack, they'll work as a microphone.
26:06Bad guys learn to do it remotely without your consent.
26:09There's malware that retask your computer output channel into input channel.
26:14It can record sounds from across the room even when the headphones are in their jack
26:18and the microphone is turned off and disconnected from the computer.
26:22Then it compresses the audio and sends it over the internet.
26:26There are computer mice that look like regular ones but have microphones and a built-in SIM card in them.
26:32The mics are so powerful, they can even record whisper and broadcast that audio in real time.
26:38To activate it, you have to call the SIM card number, and it goes on silently.
26:42To deactivate it, you can send an SMS to the same number.
26:46Some employers confirmed eavesdropping on their staff using that technology.
26:52A smart toothbrush remembers every move you made with it and shares it with you when you're done brushing.
26:58It also connects to your iPhone or Android using an app and sends data on your brushing habits to your
27:05dentist.
27:06They can watch over your brushing process and give you tips on how to take better care of your teeth.
27:11Smartwatches, fitness trackers, and other smart wearables monitor your health
27:16and can determine if you're walking, running, or driving with their built-in sensors.
27:20If third parties get control over that data, they can also monitor your hand movements
27:25as you unlock your phone, enter your PIN code at the ATM, or your password at the computer.
27:31The gadgets are smart enough to accurately guess all that secret data most of the time.
27:36They can also find out the email address you use when you register with the app to identify who you
27:42are.
27:44Pacemakers and other health devices send patient data over the internet.
27:47In theory, criminals could obtain it during transfer and change it to look like the patient needs hospital treatment.
27:55That would make them leave their home and bad guys could take advantage of the situation.
28:00Smart toys that have cameras and microphones in them can record videos and sounds and send them to the toy
28:06maker.
28:06To keep prices on smart toys lower, they don't add expensive security mechanisms to protect that data.
28:13If cybercriminals get a hold of it, they can steal pictures, videos, or audio, and even identify GPS coordinates of
28:20the house.
28:21LED lights equipped with sensors and connected to video cameras can watch over and listen to conversations over a large
28:28distance.
28:29This technology was used at one large airport for security and comfort reasons.
28:36Cybercriminals went further and learned to use ordinary light bulbs for eavesdropping on conversations.
28:41To do it, they need a clean line of sight between a powerful telescope and the bulb of the right
28:47thickness.
28:48It won't work if you have drapes on your window.
28:50When you're talking or listening to music, there are changes in air pressure on the surface of the bulb and
28:56it's shaking a bit.
28:57A special converter can turn data on the sounds from electrical to digital.
29:02Internet-connected thermostats can be operated remotely, and that made them desirable for cybercriminals.
29:09They once got access to millions of debit and credit cards data through a large retailer's heating and cooling system.
29:16Other bad guys found a way to remotely lock smart thermostats controls and demanded ransom to unlock them.
29:23Smart fridges can tell you when it's time to buy milk as they track your food preferences and have great
29:29connectivity.
29:30Smart dishwashers, coffee machines, washers, and dryers are also collecting and transmitting your data, even at moments you don't think
29:37they're doing it.
29:38Criminals can make use of that data to find out a lot about your schedule and guess when you aren't
29:44at home.
29:46Your voice assistant makes your life easier, but it must listen to you 24-7 to make that possible.
29:52They never record anything you say before you activate them with your voice.
29:56Everything that follows is stored in the cloud and can be of use for different companies.
30:01They can learn what music you like to listen to, what news stories interest you the most, and where you
30:07make your reservations.
30:08Some companies hire human reviewers to listen to commands to see if voice recognition works well and improve its accuracy.
30:16Xbox admitted they also hired people to listen to users' audio to improve voice command features.
30:22The problem is that it made some recordings by mistake and strangers were listening to personal chats.
30:28Home security cameras can take videos, pictures, and audio recording and upload them to the cloud without you even knowing.
30:36Manufacturers say it's done to improve object recognition.
30:40You can get access to that camera footage remotely using an app.
30:44There are programs that can guess a CCTV password and forward the video stream to a third-party computer.
30:50They can also get control over the camera and disable any signs of monitoring, like red light, so it seems
30:57inactive.
30:59Almost every car has an event data recorder that tracks information on its location, average speed, road condition, and even
31:07your preferred route.
31:09Your computer on wheels constantly streams that data to its manufacturer.
31:13They use it to try to prevent accidents and make other improvements.
31:16It's not clear who owns all that car-related information, so in theory, it could end up at a third
31:23party.
31:24Smart TVs run an operating system just like computers and also have a file system, cameras for video face recognition,
31:31and a microphone.
31:33They are always connected to the Internet, and if cyber criminals get access to a TV,
31:39that can change certain settings and record audio even when the TV is off.
31:43They could also watch you through the camera and use the smart gadget to move to other devices on the
31:49same network, like your laptop.
31:52Well, I'm totally creeped out, so what can we do about it?
31:56You can disable automatic content recognition to stop your TV from giving you viewing recommendations
32:01and limit voice activation function for a safer experience.
32:05You'll find that option in general or advanced settings under Viewing Information or Viewing Data.
32:12You can also disconnect it from the cloud altogether.
32:15Always change default passwords and usernames on new devices to secure your network.
32:21Make up a new password for every gadget every now and then.
32:25You can also split your modem and use one Wi-Fi signal for laptops, iPads, and the like, and the
32:31other for security cameras.
32:33Don't forget to turn off the Wi-Fi router when you leave the house to minimize the risk of a
32:38digital intrusion.
32:40Whenever possible, enable two-step authentication that demands physical access to the device to log in.
32:47Always install software updates as soon as the gadget manufacturer offers you to do it.
32:53Updates have patches for detected vulnerability issues.
32:57Cover your laptop camera with a dark-colored tape when you aren't using it.
33:01Delete your conversations with a voice assistant.
33:04You can do it at the manufacturer's website or app.
33:07Another option is to activate the Delete by Voice function in Settings.
33:11Then, you'll be able to tell the assistant to delete what you just said or your last conversations.
33:18You can also mute the device when you aren't using it and choose not to send data to manufacturer to
33:23help them improve services.
33:25If you have a thermostat that connects to your voice assistant, tap the microphone icon on its screen and set
33:32voice control to off.
33:33You won't be able to activate it remotely and it won't be able to listen to wake words and send
33:39your audio anywhere.
33:40Okay, have a nice day.
33:43Hey buddy, looks like you had some fun in the great outdoors.
33:48As adorable as those paw prints look, your mama still needs to clean them.
33:54Spreading soda over the carpet and then vacuuming it works like magic for such cases.
34:01Artistic people can be messy sometimes.
34:04No judgment here, I know it's all part of the creative process.
34:09But this hack will actually help save time from cleaning only to paint more.
34:15I think that's more than enough laundry detergent.
34:19Yep, she agrees with me.
34:21There's a way to make sure he uses the right amount next time.
34:26Just put the ice tray in the freezer and you'll have yourself jelly detergent cubes.
34:33Hey, this will save you money too, you know.
34:36Cleaning your brushes is such a bore.
34:39It's definitely something that tests one's patience.
34:43This shaving foam hack will save you a lot of time.
34:47I feel like that amount of hair will clog the sink though.
34:51Remember what parents always say, wash your hands before eating something.
34:58But looks like that's not an easy task with those melted soap bars.
35:03A couple of rubber bands will help you save your soap.
35:09It won't be touching water all the time and therefore, it'll last longer.
35:15Oh man, I hate it when bottles get all dirty inside.
35:20If you're not Mr. Fantastic with the ability to stretch your body into any shape,
35:24then this looks like an impossible task.
35:29Hey, wait.
35:30Maybe I was looking at it the wrong way.
35:33Magneto's powers will work perfectly fine here.
35:37I feel like you'll need a stronger magnet, however.
35:40Wow, this bottle looks brand new now.
35:43Don't you just hate that cooking and cleaning takes forever,
35:46but eating the dish you made takes like 15 minutes?
35:52Guess that guy leaves all the hard work to the lady.
35:56Don't worry, miss.
35:57There's a way you can avoid this disaster.
36:01Just cover the surfaces with stretch film and that's it.
36:05Now you don't need to get anxious about all the cleaning you'll have to do later.
36:11Hope this won't cause you to be late for your work.
36:15Because how are you going to explain this to your boss?
36:20You can't just say,
36:21I had to wait for the stinky odor to go away.
36:26It's always a real struggle to get the corners, am I right?
36:31But it's nothing a couple of straws can't fix.
36:35No dust left behind is the motto.
36:38You can firmly clean all the nooks and crannies that the regular vacuum head can't get to.
36:46If you're a jar collector like I am,
36:48then you already got everything you'll need for this hack.
36:54This is what being smart looks like, everyone.
36:57By the way,
36:58looks like you've been postponing doing the dishes for a while now, huh?
37:04Don't worry, no judgments.
37:06We've all been there.
37:08Those toothbrushes were basically swimming in there.
37:12But the glass filling up with water is inevitable, really.
37:16However, Orbeez balls can make the process a lot slower.
37:21Somebody needs to replace the paper towel.
37:25But don't head to the store just yet.
37:28I suggest you ditch paper towels altogether and go for this reusable option.
37:34You'll be saving a lot of bucks.
37:36Thank me later.
37:38Whoa, have you been collecting dirty makeup sponges or what?
37:43Don't use them until they're all clean.
37:46Otherwise, I'm pretty sure they'll give you pimples.
37:50Looks like this is gonna take a while.
37:53But the satisfaction you'll get once you see them all clean will be worth it.
37:59These kind of look like Easter eggs to me.
38:02By the way,
38:03do you really need that many sponges to do your makeup?
38:08It's all fun and games until someone spills all the glitter on the floor.
38:13Worry not, we got you.
38:16Hey, good to see you recycling.
38:18No, you don't need a bigger bin, trust me.
38:21All you need is to know this one hack.
38:24And let's get this one thing straight.
38:26I know this is science, but it sure feels like magic.
38:31Honey, I shrunk the trash.
38:34Look at the difference here.
38:36It's a relief to see you don't have a pile of dirty dishes like the lady before.
38:41But how are you going to explain that sink?
38:44Seems like you've been ignoring it for quite some time now.
38:49That's why you need something strong to scrub there.
38:54But I have a better solution.
38:56One that won't tire you.
38:59Just apply a coat of dish soap and soda mixture all around the sink.
39:03And wait.
39:04I wouldn't believe how it works wonders if I didn't see it with my own eyes.
39:11You're going to hurt your back and knees cleaning like this.
39:16You know, robot vacuum cleaners don't need coffee breaks, right?
39:21So put that thing to work.
39:23In the meantime, you can just relax and maybe even start reading the book you bought six months ago.
39:31No matter how many times you clean the stove, it always gets dirty at the end of the day, right?
39:38Well, not anymore.
39:40Hey, I think I'm going to give this a try using glitter glue.
39:43It'll help make things more fun.
39:47You should have bought a trash bin with a lid.
39:50To avoid the awful stench, you know.
39:53Although this hack won't make the trash smell good or anything, it will at least help keep your bin fresh
39:58and nice.
40:02I know this is not a food hacks video, but that doesn't stop me from wanting some snacks now.
40:09Even if you're too old to play with slimes, it might be a good idea to keep one at home
40:13for stuff like this.
40:22If I were you, I would still disinfect that with antibacterial wipes or something, just in case.
40:29Hey, it's her turn to pick the movie now.
40:32Uh-oh, someone's forgotten to add laundry powder to the shopping list.
40:37That's okay.
40:38You can still make your own with everyday things, such as baking soda and a soap bar.
40:44This lady is one of the lucky ones because she has a dishwasher.
40:49Placing a piece of lemon, even one that's been juiced, will help freshen the load and leave your dishes looking
40:54shinier.
40:58This is why I never wear white socks if I'm going to visit someone else's house.
41:04Because I don't really want to see how dirty their floors might be, you know.
41:10Using bleach for situations like this may help, but it might also ruin your garments.
41:17That's why this hack is the better option to make white clothes look great again.
41:23You might want to clean the microwave after you're done, though.
41:28This phone case looks like it's been through some tough stuff.
41:33Let's give it the second chance it deserves.
41:36All you need to do is apply WD-40 spray, pour some soda, and rinse it out.
41:42By the way, if you have sensitive skin, you might want to wear protective gloves to avoid irritation.
41:49Better safe than sorry.
41:51Cleaning stubborn stains on a glass stovetop can be tricky.
41:56There's always the risk of causing scratches on the surface.
42:01That's why any type of scrubbing or scraping action is not advised.
42:06Did you know that according to one poll, an average person spends more than six days a year washing dishes?
42:14Then there's all the other cleaning stuff that needs to be done.
42:19But knowing the right hacks will save you a lot of time and make your life so much easier.
42:26Wow, your shoes are definitely cleaner than this house.
42:30Who knew shoelaces would work like a charm when it comes to getting rid of all the dust and rust?
42:37Is it time to go to bed yet, or are you tired of all the work you've done around the
42:41house?
42:44I was being sarcastic.
42:46Your partner did all the work.
42:48So saving her toothbrush is the least you can do.
42:52There's nothing better than a nice piece of buttered toast for breakfast, if we're not counting hot fudge sundaes.
42:58But if you find it harder to spread out cold butter over your toast, here's an idea.
43:04Use a cheese grater.
43:05Figure out the amount you need and grate the product.
43:08The process will also soften the butter, making it easier to spread.
43:12And you won't have to melt a too large amount of it in the process.
43:16But still, that hot fudge!
43:18Dried pasta comes in all sorts of different shapes and sizes for a reason.
43:23That's because each type of pasta goes best with a particular sauce.
43:28Pasta shells, for example, are perfect with denser and chunkier sauces.
43:32Why?
43:33Because the sauce gets inside the shells, making it easier to serve and eat the dish.
43:38The ribbed outer surface also helps with covering the shells in the sauce.
43:44If you ever end up burning your cookies, you can save them with your trusty grater, too.
43:50Just grate off the blackened parts after carefully taking the cookies from the baking tray.
43:54But be careful and wait until the cookies have cooled down.
43:58Also, if you ruin their shape a bit, you can always dip them in some melted chocolate.
44:04After the chocolate cools down, you'll have perfectly shaped cookies.
44:08Although, after it gets past your lips and beyond, does the shape of the cookie actually matter?
44:14Just saying.
44:16If you like adding a lot of ingredients to your sandwiches, but don't really appreciate it when the bread gets
44:22soggy,
44:23there is a way to reduce the amount of moisture.
44:25Pick your sliced tomatoes or cucumbers and place them between two paper towels for up to five minutes.
44:31After that, you can use them.
44:34Also, make sure to spread butter, cheese, or sauces, like mayo or ketchup, onto the bread first.
44:40This will help you seal the bread and keep moisture at bay.
44:45Some people think that the little white string that you find near an egg yolk needs to be removed before
44:51you cook the egg.
44:52Well, I'm here to tell you that these strands are called calaza, and you don't actually need to get rid
44:57of them.
44:58They help keep the yolk in place at the egg's center.
45:00A calaza is not going to mess up the consistency or the taste of your food, so removing it is
45:07completely up to you.
45:08Ever notice that most juice boxes come with two flaps, one on each side?
45:13Those are actually handles.
45:16Manufacturers design the boxes this way to make it easier for us to hold them.
45:20This way, we don't end up squeezing the box, making the juice spill out.
45:26Now, you don't need to be a baking pro to know that you can use both white and brown sugar
45:31in your recipes.
45:32But have you ever wondered what the difference between these two is?
45:36It turns out that the only thing that sets them apart is that, during production, a small amount of molasses
45:43is added to the brown sugar.
45:45Molasses is basically a sort of syrup you get when processing sugarcane.
45:50It's usually removed during the refining process.
45:53That's how white sugar is produced.
45:55But if some amount of molasses remains in the final product, we end up with brown sugar, with its specific
46:01taste and darker hue.
46:03It's a good thing.
46:06There are a lot of things you can put in your dishwasher, apart from your dishes.
46:10For example, you can clean such things as your silicone oven mitts or the knobs of some kitchen appliances, like
46:17your oven or stove.
46:19Some kitchen sponges and reusable towels may be safe to clean in the dishwasher as well.
46:24Speaking of kitchen cleaning products, there are a lot of things you can do with dish soap, like de-griming
46:31your patio furniture.
46:32Just add a bit of dish detergent to some warm water and use the solution to wipe down your outdoor
46:37furniture with a piece of cloth.
46:40Finally, rinse it clean using your garden hose.
46:43You can also use dish soap to get rid of greasy stains on your clothes.
46:47Be it pasta sauce or salad dressings.
46:50Hey, sometimes we miss our mouths!
46:53So, just apply a little dish detergent to the stain and then rinse with water.
46:57Use non-colored soap for lighter clothes.
47:00For more difficult stains, let the dish soap sink in for a bit, then throw the piece of clothing in
47:05the washer as usual.
47:06And think about maybe getting a bib.
47:09If none of the methods have helped you organize your closet, and you're still overwhelmed with large piles of clothes,
47:16there's a simple way that might be effective.
47:18It's called the one-in-one-out rule.
47:22That means, for every new piece of clothing you buy, you need to get rid of one you already have.
47:28That means you'll always be decluttering your space.
47:31To make it easier to find something in your closet, good luck!
47:35Keep your most used items at eye level.
47:38This way, they'll be easier to find and pull out when you're in a hurry.
47:41Those items that you tend to use less often, like your evening clothes, for example, can stay on the shelves
47:47above or below your eye level.
47:50You can make good use of old spice tins.
47:53If you glue some powerful magnets to the inside of the tins, they can double as magnetic shelves.
47:59You can use them for all sorts of everyday items, like kitchen pliers, ice cream scoops, or even cutlery.
48:06You can also place them on any metallic surface, like your refrigerator door.
48:11They'll blend in nicely with your kitchen magnets.
48:14Hidden in your laundry room, there's a great tool for picking up pet hair.
48:18It sometimes works better than lint rollers.
48:21Take a dryer sheet and, using some elbow grease, you'll get rid of that dog or cat hair in no
48:27time.
48:28It works on all sorts of surfaces, but it's especially effective for upholstered furniture.
48:34Now, if you don't like it when a door starts squeaking whenever you enter a room,
48:38get a bar of soap and rub it straight on the hinges.
48:41This will only help for a while, though, but it'll do the trick until you manage to get to a
48:46hardware store.
48:48And, you know, buy some oil.
48:50Have you ever noticed that in some elevators, there's a star next to the number of a specific floor?
48:56No, it's not to indicate where my office is.
49:00It's there to point out where the nearest exit is.
49:03And it's not always on the first floor.
49:05It's most likely located on the floor closest to the street.
49:09Have you ever wondered why stop signs are red?
49:13Well, back in the day, they didn't actually have any particular color at all.
49:17Before the 1920s, they didn't even have a standardized shade.
49:22In 1922, though, someone came up with the octagon.
49:25But initially, it was painted yellow.
49:28All because the red coloring tended to fade out too quickly because of sun exposure.
49:33So, yellow turned out to be the best option.
49:36It took another 30 years for fade-resistant enamel paint to be invented.
49:40We ended up changing the color of the stop sign back to red.
49:44After all, it's still the best color if you want something to be easily noticeable.
49:49Do you know there's a type of rose that can grow taller than people?
49:54According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the tallest rosebush ever found grew in Vienna, Austria.
50:01It was a staggering 28 and a half feet tall.
50:04Yes, it arose to a great height.
50:07In the same way we all have unique patterns on our fingerprints, no two tigers have the same set of
50:13stripes.
50:14It makes it easier for people working with this feline species to distinguish one tiger from another.
50:20I'll bet you didn't know, the White House has its own flower shop hidden in the basement of the building.
50:26It's supposed to provide flower arrangements for all sorts of events that take place there.
50:31It's probably no surprise that pizza has become an American staple dish despite its Italian origin.
50:38People in the U.S. love it so much that they buy 350 slices of pizza every second in the
