CDC Alerts: Early Surge of West Nile Virus Observed in Texas, Louisiana, and Six California Counties

The CDC is monitoring an atypically premature onset of the 2026 West Nile virus season, with confirmed positive mosquito samples arriving ahead of the usual timeline in San Antonio, the Dallas-Fort Worth area of Texas, New Orleans in Louisiana, and six counties across California. This early detection raises concerns for potential above-average virus transmission during the high summer months of July through September. Annually, West Nile virus claims the lives of over 130 Americans and results in severe neurological disorders affecting more than 1,300 individuals. There is currently no vaccine or approved treatment for this virus. Officials from the CDC indicate that the early onset may correlate with warmer winter weather, which failed to reduce mosquito populations to typical seasonal numbers. Those at greatest risk for severe illness include elderly individuals, those with compromised immune systems, and patients suffering from diabetes, cancer, or kidney disease.
