00:00How is the president's push to pass this Save America legislation going?
00:06Well, Matt, at this point, we've heard from Republican Senate leaders for months trying to stress to President Trump that
00:12the votes are not there for this legislation.
00:15The math does not work out because at the moment it's not tied to a reconciliation package, which would require
00:20a simple majority.
00:22Instead, the Senate would need 60 votes to get it over the finish line, which means Democrats would have to
00:27get on board.
00:27That doesn't seem likely. And some Republicans have even voiced concerns with this bill, which would look to impose new
00:33rules for registering to vote and casting ballots.
00:36The House speaker did seem to suggest that maybe they would try to fold it into another reconciliation package to
00:43kind of smooth the glide path here.
00:45But it's not totally clear that at least as the bill stands now, it would pass those parliamentarian rules that
00:52are required in order for it to be done in that way.
00:55It is definitely setting up a contentious meeting for President Trump, as he is still expected to head to the
01:00Hill at some point today to meet behind closed doors with Senate Republicans.
01:04Considering Matt and Danny, just yesterday we saw the Congress vote to rebuke President Trump when it comes to the
01:11conflict in Iran.
01:12No doubt there's going to be some tough words exchanged between the two sides.
01:15I was going to say, how much of this is just the president being very frustrated with Republicans in the
01:19Senate?
01:21So, in some regards, we know that this White House is trying to use the Save America Act to campaign
01:26on as some tangible solution as we head into the midterms,
01:31despite what has been some pretty staunch pushback to the legislation.
01:36At this point, it's kind of hard to say what the political strategy is here, because, Danny, President Trump has
01:42also linked some other critical priorities to passing the Save America Act,
01:46including the extension of FISA, for example, which really made some Republicans, including some of those more hawkish members on
01:52the Hill, pretty upset.
01:54We'll have to see where it ultimately goes from here, if it can get over the finish line.
01:58But I think it's safe to say in its current version, it appears unlikely that it would have enough votes
02:03to actually get signed into law.
