00:04movies are not easy to get made they sit in development for a long time you have to fight
00:09every step of the way tell me how you know a movie is worth fighting for that you're
00:15going to put in the commitment and fight for this film for me I asked two questions why
00:19tell this story and why tell it now the values and themes of a movie if they align with my
00:24personal values I think I'm much more motivated in telling that story but also I look at why
00:28tell a story now with the Pope we're in a moment in time when you have to post two living
00:32popes here at the same time we have Pope Francis was like a rock star Pope there's a story to
00:36be
00:36told the world is in dissension right now all these different sides fighting each of these
00:40popes represents a different side a different point of view so we felt like now is the time
00:44to tell a story because it's gonna resonate with audiences and there's a important message to get
00:47out there so I think timing is important too all of our movies here were tough movies to get made
00:52you're fighting against the marketplace the market doesn't want to make these movies so you're already
00:55going in with people wanting to say no and I find it's a fight for talent too so on the
01:00two
01:00popes how do I keep my director locked in you know it takes a long time from development all the
01:04way
01:04through to get a movie made in this case he sold Fernando Maria sold the pitch with us and we
01:09were
01:09developing and he wanted to make the movie and then his country Brazil asked him to direct the
01:14Olympics so how am I going to say no to that completely takes you the director out of the picture
01:20so we lost him for several years and like how do you keep him engaged how do you make him
01:23feel like
01:23he's still part of the process very much shaping the movie because he's ultimately our leader and
01:26luckily the Olympics finished and then we brought him back so I think also it's not only a fight
01:30against kind of the market but also like how do you keep your talent locked in when everyone is chasing
01:34the top talent I think all of us here work with great directors and every studio every producer is
01:38chasing that that same director
01:47do any of you have a project that is the one that got away a movie you're still hoping to
01:51make that's
01:52been stuck I think we all do tell me about them so Rebecca I'm going to knock on wood so
01:58I don't
01:58jinx myself I'm going to try to make the last lethal weapon movie and Dick Donner is coming back the
02:03original cast is coming wow amazing yeah and it's just amazing the story itself is very personal to
02:08him wow and to the cast so I really want to make that one but it's a knock on wood
02:12it's a lot of how long
02:13how long have you been trying several years yeah Jez Butterworth I don't know if you guys know
02:17yeah so Jez is doing the rewrite right now and Mel and Danny are ready to go so it's about
02:23that's amazing oh my god amazing but for me it's like that's I wasn't part of the other four but
02:28it's like a huge fan I almost feel like as a fan I want to help to make it happen
02:39I'm curious you know there's been some discussion about the star the value of a star is it like it
02:45was you know a few years ago how important is it to have that name leading your movie what do
02:51you
02:51think does it still need a big movie star like Tom Cruise or someone to get a movie made these
02:56days
02:56the two popes was critical I mean Stuber I love him and he was very clear with us saying this
03:01is the cast
03:01you need to get and you'll get the green light it was Jonathan Price and Anthony Hopkins there was
03:06literally no backup this if you want the green light this is the assignment so I appreciated the
03:10honesty but it's okay it's very clear as a producer this is the assignment you lay these actually have
03:14a green light you don't you have no movie but it's very very specific in that case when Cheryl Lee
03:19talks about give in and surrender I think that's like a huge thing for us I think all of us
03:24here are
03:24probably control freaks you want to control everything and part of being a producer sometimes you do have
03:28to give up and surrender I'm not at all major I'm a major one and so in our case it
03:33was a difference
03:33between bombshell and our movie our issue was not a green light issue but in the middle of shooting
03:37we took a huge hiatus it was much longer than we expected so we shot in Rome and there was
03:42expected
03:43hiatus and that'd be much longer for weather issues yeah weather issues some scheduling issues
03:49and then so we're like are we even gonna be able to finish the movie we have actually two halves
03:52of the
03:52movie right so that's when you have to just kind of give up and surrender okay it's all just
03:55going to come together at the right time in the right place but they're just there's nothing
03:58you can really do at a certain point how long did it end up being end up being four months
04:02wow oh my goodness that's really yeah so luckily everyone came back and everybody came back yeah
04:07but it was tough to make sure everyone's who ended up gaining weight
04:11but what about you like the key for you though all came back that's incredible
04:16they took jobs in between and came back they all came back it's amazing wow that's it yeah
04:20you
