00:00For Square, after getting married last year, we can reveal that Eve and Suki finally approved for adoption tonight.
00:08Where have you been? Did you get my messages?
00:11Um, oh Eve, look, I know you're angry with me, you know, you've every right to be.
00:21I messed up. I'm sorry, but listen, everything's going to be okay.
00:27It's not, Suki. No, it's been approved.
00:30What? Yeah, I know.
00:33Yeah, they recommended some grief cancelling for me, but it's not going to hold us back.
00:39We did it, Eve. We're going to be parents.
00:47Well, Heather, peace to play as Eve joins me now. Hurrah! Hurrah!
00:51Heather, there's good news for this couple because they've been through so much.
00:54It's great. It's really good.
00:56I've had four years of trauma, so...
00:58Exactly, but this, I mean, this whole storyline has been really good because it's been a slow burner
01:03and it's showed people how hard it is, actually, the whole process that you've got to go through if you
01:08want to adopt.
01:09Well, it takes that long, so I think we've been playing it out for about a year, a year now.
01:13It can take much longer than that.
01:16Of course it can.
01:16And you've sort of got to look at yourself and revisit trauma.
01:22I think that these two probably need a little bit of counselling.
01:26Just a tad.
01:27Maybe, yeah, maybe, I think you're quite right there.
01:30It's been, I mean, they're an incredible couple and I know you two got on incredibly well as well,
01:34which is great because you've got to have that trust and that shorthand.
01:38And it was, was it two years ago that the marriage happened?
01:42Yeah, 23, was it the...
01:44And you know, I was surprised that that was the first one because you would have thought,
01:50you know, the first lesbian wedding, you'd have thought that would have been...
01:52I know, 40 years in.
01:52For goodness sake, what's been going on?
01:54I know, we finally got there.
01:55It seems crazy.
01:56Now, look, the wedding scenes were lovely.
01:58It was all done beautifully.
01:59But before you shot those scenes or just as you were preparing for them,
02:04you got news of your own that you had breast cancer.
02:08And you still, I tell you what, I salute you.
02:11You still went into work and you still did all of that.
02:14It was the night before we started the block that I found out.
02:18But I think at that point I just thought, I want to finish the story.
02:23Right.
02:24So if things had gone badly wrong, at least we would have kind of put a full stop.
02:29And those two weeks of filming wasn't going to change anything.
02:32Right.
02:32OK, so you carried on.
02:33It was my choice.
02:35Yeah, EastEnders were amazing.
02:36They have been brilliant, haven't they?
02:38The cast, the crew, everybody involved have been so supportive of you.
02:41They have.
02:42I worked right the way through, but that was my choice.
02:44They kept me a lot quieter.
02:46But the days that I was there were the days that were the easiest.
02:51Right.
02:51Because everybody makes me laugh and everybody...
02:54It's just a real sort of family feel.
02:56Which is good.
02:56And I didn't want to be at home, just sort of sitting in it.
02:59No.
02:59No, and it's quite good to have that distraction in a way, you know, that you're having to do.
03:03And also that normality.
03:05Yeah.
03:05Because your whole world blows up, doesn't it?
03:07Yeah, it's like having the rug ripped out from under you.
03:10Of course it is.
03:11I think I went in at three o'clock to the breast cancer centre in Worthing and they told me
03:15at 6pm.
03:17So three hours later, you know, and you're like trying to sort of process it on the way home and
03:21yeah.
03:22So your whole world just changes, doesn't it?
03:24Completely changes.
03:24It does, but it's been very positive as well.
03:26You've been incredible, both of you.
03:28It really has.
03:28Because your wife had breast cancer as well.
03:30The year before, yeah.
03:31But you know what?
03:32We've showed up for each other and I think being able to prove that kind of in sickness and in
03:38health, we did it.
03:39Yeah.
03:39You know, she showed up for me and I showed up for her.
03:42It's made us stronger.
03:43It's been really tough on the kids.
03:45Of course.
03:45But they've come through that as well.
03:46They're really resilient.
03:48You've got incredible girls.
03:49Yeah, they're amazing.
03:50You really have.
03:51I mean, your oldest one, she's what, 11 now?
03:5211, yeah.
03:53She's just about to go to big school.
03:55Yeah, she's amazing.
03:56And the twins, Jessie and Lola, are nine.
03:57Yeah, they're nine and they're aware.
04:00That's the thing.
04:00You can't hide it from them.
04:01I mean, in a way, I think sometimes with children, do you not think you've got to be honest without...
04:06We were honest without scaring them.
04:07Exactly.
04:08Without scaring them, you know, and we were super honest with them the whole time.
04:12I think the only thing was to try not to...
04:15I couldn't allow myself to break down in front of them.
04:18You know, you see your mum break down in front of you.
04:20So I used to kind of use the shower for that.
04:22Right.
04:23I've lost the dog.
04:24I hear you.
04:25I understand that completely.
04:26Yeah, because it's tricky because their world is falling apart as well.
04:29Of course.
04:30But as you said, sometimes something like this, you know, there is a silver lining in that you are very...
04:35You're so much closer than you are.
04:37We are.
04:37I've just realised what's important.
04:39This unit.
04:39This amazing unit.
04:39You realise what's important.
04:40You think, what am I chasing?
04:42You know, I've got this beautiful job at EastEnders with gorgeous people.
04:45I've got a beautiful family at home.
04:47And that's enough.
04:49It is.
04:50It's enough.
04:51It is.
04:51Because your type of cancer was aggressive.
04:54It must have been very scary.
04:56It was.
04:56At times.
04:57I mean, that goes without saying.
04:58It must have been really frightening.
05:00But my goodness me, you are so strong.
05:03You're incredible.
05:04No, you are.
05:05To be able to just deal with that.
05:07People say that though, but you just get on.
05:11Don't you?
05:12I don't see myself as strong at all.
05:15I think it's just about finding the positives in whatever situation you're in.
05:19And I got to spend amazing time with my mum, who came down after my mastectomy.
05:24I hadn't had time with my mum like that since I was a kid.
05:27You know, all of those relationships in your life suddenly mean so much more.
05:32Oh, they do.
05:33And, you know, you just work out what you need to invest time in.
05:36Yeah, absolutely.
05:37You're still doing your music though, because I know music is really important to you.
05:41I was gigging a couple of weeks ago actually, but I keep it really small.
05:44I just pop it out on the mailing list.
05:46So they were like literally 100 seater venues.
05:49Oh, but how lovely.
05:50Oh, that was a song we wrote last year.
05:52So I went on a songwriting retreat for my 50th birthday instead of having a party, because
05:57I had no eyelashes or eyebrows and I thought, I don't want any pictures.
06:01And so I wrote with, that's Ruth Trimble.
06:03She's an amazing solo artist herself.
06:06And I've just got back from another one over in Malaga.
06:09So we just go for a week and write in the mountains.
06:12I think so.
06:13Doing that, that's a wonderful thing to do.
06:15Oh, it's beautiful.
06:16And then not only are you performing, but your daughter, she can sing.
06:21She got up with me.
06:22Look at this girl.
06:24Oh, she's beautiful.
06:25I thought I'm going to cry.
06:27Look at her in her little Brighton top.
06:29It's brilliant.
06:30She just got back from Wembley to watch Brighton Women in the FA Cup final.
06:35So that was even better.
06:37Do you know what?
06:37It's great when you do something and the audience responds and it's wonderful and it's a high.
06:42But for your girl to be there by your side, that is so special, isn't it?
06:46Well, if you watch that video, it's on my Insta.
06:49You can hear the shake in my voice because you were losing it.
06:52Because she could sing at home.
06:53But I thought, OK, put her on the stage with monitors and a band.
06:57And she just lifted the level.
06:59And so I'm nearly crying in the video.
07:01I couldn't believe it.
07:02I couldn't hold it back.
07:03It's wonderful.
07:04Yeah, we're so lucky with our girls.
07:06No, you are.
07:07You've got a great, great family.
07:08And of course, you know, we've been following the fact that you've gone through all of this.
07:13Both of you, you know, you nearly have gone through this.
07:16And it is so important just to know you're normal, isn't it?
07:19Just know you're normal and check.
07:21You know, I found out because I was doing like a no sugar diet.
07:23I was taking pictures of myself to watch my progress.
07:27And, you know, it was because my nipple looked different.
07:31Right, OK.
07:31That's how I worked it out.
07:33I was like, that doesn't look like me.
07:35And then I felt, you know, and it was there.
07:38Jeez.
07:39So, yeah, it's really, really important.
07:41Just in the shower.
07:42Yeah.
07:43Just, you know, while you're washing yourself.
07:45Absolutely.
07:46No, of course, just check.
07:47And thank goodness you got it early.
07:49Enough.
07:50Yes.
07:50And obviously you still be having treatment for a little while.
07:54Yeah, a couple of years of drugs.
07:55They're all these, everything's bespoke now with cancer care,
07:59depending on your age and fitness and whatever.
08:00So I'm on a couple of years of drugs just to keep flushing the system.
08:04Right.
08:04Because it was in my lymph.
08:06But the NHS, they know what they're doing.
08:07The cancer care in Sussex particularly is awesome.
08:11I'm glad to hear that.
08:12It's so good to see you, Heather.
08:13It's really nice to see you after all these years.
08:15I know, it's been too long.
08:16And EastEnders continues tonight, half past seven on BBC One.
08:20And remember, you can find all the important signs and symptoms
08:22we've been talking about on our website.
08:25And there is that sticker you can get a hold of there.
08:28Thanks, Heather.
08:28Great to see you.
08:29Thank you so much.
08:30Right.
