Durham County Council has launched the first of three consultations ahead of a revised Local Plan. Residents and businesses are being invited to share views on development, services and the future of the county.

00:16The consultation covers housing, employment, transport, environmental issues, community facilities, local services, health and quality of life.
00:25Council leaders say local knowledge can highlight what may work well in different places and where concerns or opportunities might
00:33emerge over the coming years.
00:35A local plan sets out planning policies and identifies suitable locations for development.
00:41The current County Durham plan was adopted in 2020 and could shape decisions until 2035,
00:47but national guidance calls for reviews at regular intervals over time periods.
00:52The existing plan runs to almost 300 pages.
00:56It includes proposed housing locations intended to meet government targets
01:00and contains protections for more than 250,000 hectares of natural landscape across the county as well as other local
01:10policies.
01:11This consultation is the first of three plan stages before a revised plan is considered for adoption in March 2029.
01:19Residents, businesses and community groups can submit views before the consultation closes on the 17th of August this year, if
01:27approved.
