00:00Well, things are afoot in sports.
00:05As you heard there in the update, the Giannis trade might not involve a third team now,
00:10which has an emotion bubbling up for me that I did not expect.
00:14But we'll get to that.
00:15I didn't.
00:15I was like, wait, what?
00:18We'll get to that coming up.
00:19Now there's a tear coming to the eye.
00:20It's a different kind of a moment.
00:23Well, you know, we'll get to it coming up.
00:26How are you?
00:27I'm all right.
00:27Yeah?
00:28Yeah.
00:28Good weekend?
00:28You were going to play some golf.
00:30I know that.
00:30Did you play some golf?
00:31I played golf on Friday.
00:34Bunny asked me to help him out with a foursome.
00:36I'm going to play for it.
00:38It was at his club where there was a fundraiser for the Evans Scholarship.
00:45So I got to play in that.
00:47That was great.
00:49Always good times playing with my buddy, Brad Grava.
00:52Grava?
00:53Grava.
00:55Yeah, and I played reasonably well.
00:56Although, I'm surprised.
00:59I scored well.
01:00I didn't think I played all that well.
01:01And I look at the scores.
01:02I'm like, oh, that's not bad.
01:03So that was good.
01:04And then just a lot of baseball to watch over the weekend.
01:09My mom came over on Friday to watch the dog while I was out golfing.
01:12So I hung out with her for a couple hours after that.
01:14And then it was her birthday on Saturday.
01:18So I went and saw her actually last night until we took her up to dinner because father's
01:23doing it with my brother.
01:25So yeah, we just had a good time.
01:26Good weekend.
01:27Yours?
01:28It was good.
01:29Got up north and had a good weekend with some friends.
01:35And I scrambled back yesterday to watch a little baseball.
01:38And I had an overall very good weekend.
01:42So thank you for asking.
01:43Did you golf?
01:44I did.
01:45And I think I was the opposite of you.
01:47I felt like I hit the ball well and I didn't score well.
01:51Where'd you play?
01:52Hidden River.
01:53I know.
01:54Hidden River's great.
01:55If you've never been there.
01:56Hidden River is like a middle class in terms of price for up there.
02:00But the payoff, it's in great shape.
02:03Nice course.
02:03It's beautiful.
02:04It's in great shape, too.
02:05Yeah, you and I are big Hidden River fans.
02:08So Brutus, Michigan.
02:09It's a little bit of a, not much of a drive from the Petoskey Harbor Springs area.
02:13No, it's about a half hour.
02:14Yep.
02:15The best.
02:16Depending on where you're coming from.
02:17That's true.
02:18End of the day, it was just, had a good time.
02:20Had a very, very good time.
02:22Finished strong-ish.
02:25Ish?
02:26Ish.
02:26Okay.
02:26Finished strong-ish.
02:27Yeah.
02:28Yeah.
02:29I shot a 50 on the front and put it together on the back.
02:32I went through a stretch where I lost five golf balls and two holes.
02:35Ooh.
02:36Yeah.
02:36And that'll ruin a round.
02:37That'll turn a decent round into a 50.
02:40I was like, bogey, bogey, bogey, bogey.
02:42Then I lost five golf balls and two holes.
02:44I'm on a little bit of a stretch here.
02:46Yeah, you are.
02:47He's white hot, people.
02:48Where I've only lost, I don't know if I've lost, I don't think I've lost a golf ball in
02:53the last two rounds I've played.
02:54Yeah.
02:54Which, for me, isn't incredible.
02:56But then again, I mean, the courses I've played are kind of wide open like that.
03:00There's not a ton of trouble where you'd be, you know, searching for your lost golf ball.
03:05But nonetheless, it makes me feel good.
03:07I avoided the water and the few water holes I worked.
03:10Okay.
03:12Me?
03:13Me?
03:14You?
03:14Me?
03:15I'm surprised he's even still here.
03:18Jemai Jones.
03:21I'm surprised he's even still here.
03:23Yeah?
03:24And, you know, I thought AJ kind of laid out a bit of a road map and said without saying
03:35what he might be thinking.
03:37If I'm guilty of reading too much into what he said, so be it.
03:42You know, sometimes you have to read between the lines.
03:44And he goes out and he goes two for four this weekend, including a game-saving leg-out single
03:51with two outs and nobody on in the ninth.
03:54Down a run.
03:55And good for him.
03:57He got roundly booed all weekend.
03:59And I was thinking about it.
04:00Like, I think what really bothers people, amongst the lack of production, like that's the number
04:08one thing.
04:08Yeah.
04:08The fact that he keeps getting used and got his first two hits of the month.
04:12First two hits basically in a month, damn near, this past weekend.
04:17Again, is he pinch hits a lot for Cary Carpenter.
04:21And Cary Carpenter is a guy who is not like an established superstar, but he's a little
04:29bit of a hero here in Detroit for postseason home runs, right?
04:33I mean, for that one, he hit in Cleveland.
04:36And, you know, his name is associated with one of the great Tiger moments of the last
04:40few years.
04:42And it feels as though Jemai Jones is frequently pinch hitting for Cary Carpenter.
04:47Now, yesterday it was McKinstry, right?
04:49I believe so.
04:51Because Carpenter was in the game.
04:52Yeah, he pinched for McKinstry.
04:53Yeah.
04:53And that, I mean, I don't think that people fully expect McKinstry, with all respect,
04:58do.
04:58He was an all-star last year.
05:00But McKinstry's not a guy that I think people have huge offensive expectations for.
05:06No, but, I mean, certainly expect Zach McKinstry to be better this year than what he has
05:10been.
05:10He's been horrible this year, as has Jemai Jones.
05:13Jemai Jones has actually been worse, but these are the last guys, these are guys at
05:18the end of your roster.
05:19McKinstry's maybe thought of way more than that.
05:22You know, he seems like to be their super sub, he plays everywhere, and yet he's not hitting
05:25this year.
05:26But he had two hits last night.
05:28So, you know, it's a lot of what have you done for me lately?
05:32What do your eyes tell you last?
05:34But, I mean, the longer view is that neither of these players has really contributed for
05:38the Tigers this year, and particularly it's Jemai Jones.
05:41But when he legged out that base hit yesterday, and look, that's what you're supposed to do.
05:46You're supposed to beat it down the line when there's two outs in the bottom of the ninth
05:49inning and you're in trouble here.
05:52Good for him.
05:53He did.
05:54And, you know, if you want to look at Montgomery, the shortstop at the time, who probably lollygagged
06:00it a little bit, okay, whatever.
06:02That's his fault.
06:03I don't care.
06:04Do the little things you have to do.
06:05Little things matter in baseball.
06:07Little things matter in life.
06:09Everything.
06:11And it's a little thing like that that has the White Sox going, we just blew that game.
06:17Jemai Jones beats it out and then goes first to third and then comes home and ties the
06:23game in the bottom of the ninth inning.
06:25All this happened with two outs.
06:26So, give him credit.
06:28Nice job.
06:28Give him credit.
06:29Yeah.
06:29But, I mean, I still think you should be DFA.
06:32Yeah.
06:32Yeah.
06:32I'm with you.
06:32And, you know, he won't get, probably won't get DFA today, but he, I'm shocked he's here
06:41and I don't understand it other than they must still think.
06:46Like, like we've seen corrections.
06:48Yeah.
06:49And, you know, guys starting to hit the ball better.
06:53And are they expecting the same thing to happen with Jemai Jones?
06:57Well, I, I, yeah, I don't know.
07:00I mean, I'm trying to figure something out.
07:02Like, is he hitting the ball hard and it's just hitting it right at people?
07:05I've seen a couple of those, but I haven't seen an overabundance of it.
07:09But he struck out seven times in his last 18 at bats.
07:13So, that's not a good strikeout rate.
07:15So, I mean, there's that to it.
07:17He's only drawn two walks during that time, but it's, it's 18 at bats.
07:23It's not a terrible walk rate, I guess.
07:26But you're, you're waiting for him.
07:28But what they're waiting for is to see what they saw last year.
07:31Cause he was so damn good last year with an OPS well over 900 against lefties.
07:35That's what they're waiting to see.
07:37They think he's the same player.
07:39But as we're going on this season, you know, it's, it's, it's been a minute.
07:43You know, it's 89 at bats for him.
07:45Most of those are leveraged against lefties.
07:47I think he's only got like 15 at bats against right-handed pitching where he, I don't think
07:50he might have one hit, I think.
07:52Um, but it's, so it's only 89 at bats, but it's 89 at bats.
07:56All right.
07:57We're getting into it.
07:57This, he's a pinch hitter only and he's hitting 146 overall.
08:02It's slightly better against left-handed pitching, but it's still well below 200 and his OPS
08:07is pathetic.
08:08I want him to be successful.
08:10I would love for him to go out and, you know, every time he comes up, you got a chance
08:14to,
08:15uh, see him put it in the gap or, or draw a walk or whatever the case or have a
08:19productive
08:20out at least, but it hasn't been the case.
08:23And I'm not sure why they're so reluctant to promote somebody from Toledo, um, for the
08:30same role.
08:31I'm just looking for a guy who's going to hit left-handed pitching, man.
08:34That's it.
08:35I don't need somebody to come up and be a superstar player.
08:38I'm not looking to, I don't need to promote one of the top prospects just for this role.
08:43And I can see down the road where there's a path for Max Clark.
08:47Who's heating up the Max Clark might get a chance to play with a big club at some point.
08:51Um, we'll see, but it's these other guys that have, they've got a bunch of these outfielders
08:56that have great OPS against left-handed pitching.
09:00And I don't think any of them are necessarily thought of as being the future of the Detroit
09:04Tigers.
09:06So I'm not sure why they're doing what they're doing other than I think they're being maybe
09:10stubborn at this point.
09:11Like, and they're telling themselves this, we've seen it before.
09:14We've seen it, but we know what's going to happen or we think it's going to be not.
09:17No, we think it's going to happen.
09:19It's going to click for him.
09:20He just needs a little bit more time.
09:22But I mean, this is, I, this runway with, with Jemai Jones staying with the Tigers, this runway
09:28is as long as that runway in fast and furious movie where they were fighting on the plane
09:35on the runway as it's ready to take off.
09:38And that was like a 15 minute scene.
09:40No runway is that long except for maybe Jemai Jones is run.
09:43Yeah.
09:44It's a, it's a great analogy, even though I didn't see the movie, but to describe that
09:48runway, it's a plane running, going down a runway for 15 minutes.
09:53It's like forever.
09:55It's like at least a 10 minute scene.
09:58Jemai Jones plays itself out.
09:59That's fantastic.
10:00Well, that's, yeah, it's a great analogy for what the runway Jemai Jones has had.
10:04But he got roundly booed.
10:06The fans, the fans voiced their displeasure and Jemai talked about it afterwards.
10:12And it was interesting to hear what he had to say.
10:14We'll play it for you.
10:15And also, I mean, one of the questions is, are you even booing Jemai?
10:19Are you booing AJ Hinch?
10:21Are you booing Scott Harris?
10:24248-539-9797.
10:27We'll have an update from the Dillon Larkin Trade Center News Aggregate Blitz Thingy News
10:30Desk.
10:31That's coming up a little bit later on.
10:33Additionally, the Giannis, the Giannis trade might not involve Detroit as a third team at
10:38all.
10:38That's the latest reporting from Shams.
10:39And we'll get into that as our show continues on a Monday.
10:42Oh, yeah.
10:43Champion Chump.
10:43We do it every Monday.
10:44Who should be considered the champion?
10:46Chump at a weekend.
10:46We'll have our nominations today at 1035.
