00:07three of these boxes will break the seven thousand five hundred dollar bank is this one of them or
00:14is it this one or this one we'll find out in a moment in this game of hide and seek
00:20as these nine celebrities Rosie Greer, Beverly Garland, Liz Torres, Bill Dana, Joey Bishop, Fanny Flagg, Mary Ann Mowgli, Lawrence
00:39Hilton Jacobs, and Artie Johnson all join us in playing Break the Bank.
00:50Now, meet our host, Tom Kennedy.
00:57Thank you very much. Hi, okay. They're all here. Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to all of
01:05you. Welcome to the festivities. I think you'll find our game fun. It's easy to play. You've met our celebrities
01:10and now what do you say we meet our two players? Johnny Jacobs, would you do the honors, please?
01:14I'd be happy to, Tom. We have two very capable players. Our current champion, whose winnings total $5,170, a
01:22public relations counselor, Jill Sefton.
01:29And her challenger, from Flushing, New York, a clinical psychology student, Kent Candelora.
01:37Welcome back to you both, Jill and Kent. They both know how to play our game. Here is a quick
01:42explanation of Break the Bank.
01:44As a matter of fact, here is what a typical board might look like. All of these same denominations of
01:49money are clustered together.
01:51The three $100 boxes touch each other along one of the sides, and so do the three $200 boxes.
01:57And, as a matter of fact, so do the three $300 boxes.
02:00And the five money bags are scattered all over.
02:02Now, the wild box is anywhere and can be used for any value.
02:05Get three of the same and you win. Get three money bags and you break the bank.
02:10We'll start our game. Incidentally, our bank is at $7,500.
02:14We'll play for that right after these words.
02:25All right, when we ended our show Friday, our game was interrupted.
02:28And here is what the exposed portions of the board look like.
02:31Jill has earned so far a $100 box, and there is one empty box that has been revealed.
02:37Now, when we resume the interrupted game, parts of the undisclosed portion of the board are rearranged,
02:42and our contestants are so notified.
02:45Now, for every question you use, contestants, remember, one of the celebrities will give you a right answer,
02:49and one will give you a bluff, and it's up to you to find the right one.
02:52And the first player to get three of the same money boxes wins.
02:55And we're going to start with you, Mr. Kent Candelora.
02:58Pick a box, and away we go.
02:59I'll take number eight, please.
03:00Number eight.
03:01Could we see box number eight, please?
03:03That is, it's a $100 box, and it is connected to, this is Joy,
03:08and Mr. Bill Dana.
03:09And if you earn this, you could, of course, block Jill in the $100 category.
03:13Hey, Joy, here's your question.
03:15Hi, Tom.
03:16How you doing, pal?
03:17Okay.
03:18Listen, what is the major form of gambling in the United States, Joy?
03:21The major form of gambling in the United States is marriage.
03:28No, as a matter of fact, if you've ever worked Las Vegas, you will find out immediately the major form
03:35of gambling in the United States, strangely enough, is dice.
03:40Bill Dana, a major form of gambling.
03:42Well, we all know it's going on right now.
03:45It's called politics.
03:48And it's poker.
03:50Poker?
03:51Yeah.
03:51All right, so is it dice or is it poker for that $100 box?
03:56Poker.
03:57Wrong.
03:58It's dice.
03:59Joy was right.
04:00It is dice.
04:01So that box returns to its neutral position.
04:03We're back to Jill Sefton.
04:06I will take number eight.
04:07Oh, yes.
04:08She wants that.
04:09Can we see box number eight?
04:10Once again, it's connected to Joy and to Bill.
04:12Joy, where do we get mohair from?
04:15Well, it happens to be a category I'm very familiar with.
04:20It happens to be.
04:23You are bald-headed, like we spoke about earlier.
04:29And you go to a wig maker.
04:31That's where you get mohair from.
04:35Well, I'm trying to help out.
04:36I'm not stupid here, you know.
04:39That's where.
04:43The answer, and if you ever worn a mohair suit,
04:46and I've worn many of them, strangely enough,
04:48and I didn't come here, you know, to be stupid.
04:51I came here to be intelligent.
04:52It comes from the goat.
04:55Bill Dana.
04:56We all know we get mohair from mo.
05:01I happen to have read it in National Geographic.
05:04It comes from the camel.
05:06From the camel.
05:06Jill, from the goat or the camel?
05:08Mohair.
05:09From the camel.
05:10No, it's from the goat.
05:12And the box goes back.
05:14Yes, Joey.
05:15What?
05:15I've been here now my first time.
05:16Yeah.
05:16I gave two correct answers.
05:18That's right.
05:18You got me two dummies down there.
05:20And I'm sitting up here.
05:22So if they're going to be dumb,
05:23from now on, I will give dumb answers.
05:24I have a hunch we're going to get another crack at it.
05:26Kent, what do you want?
05:28Number eight.
05:28Box number eight.
05:29All right, so we're going to stay right at it.
05:31Okay.
05:31Here we go, Joey.
05:33Yeah.
05:33Now, listen to me.
05:34Okay?
05:35Yes.
05:35The letters SOS represent a distress signal.
05:40Now, what do the letters stand for?
05:42The letters SOS were sent out for distress signals from ship to shore and vice versa,
05:48and it was based upon a biblical expression, save our souls.
05:52Bill Dana, SOS, what do the letters stand for?
05:58Uh, same old, uh, well, those of us in the Army knows that it stands for standards of supply.
06:11Standards of supply.
06:14I'm afraid we don't have an answer on this one, so we're going to throw this one out.
06:19We did not, see, we must have a correct answer.
06:21Incidentally, folks, here's what it says.
06:24SOS, represent a distress signal.
06:27What do the letters stand for?
06:28No meaning at all.
06:30Yes.
06:30So, we're going to have another question.
06:32Wait, no.
06:32Yes.
06:33Oh, well, I'll never do this show again.
06:35It really stood for save our, I was bluffing, but the real answer was save our ships.
06:43Save our ships.
06:44Suckers.
06:49Here's another question, though, from the same box.
06:51Are you ready?
06:51Joey and Bill.
06:52Yes.
06:52Joey, here's your question.
06:53Okay.
06:54Which country is the largest producer of petroleum in the world?
06:58Which country is the largest producer of petroleum in the world?
07:02I ask you first.
07:03Okay, but I wanted to see if you knew what you were asking.
07:07I would say, okay, and I know this, the United States of America, even though there's a shortage
07:13in everything, the United States of America.
07:14Bill Dana.
07:15Got to apologize before and come up with the right answer.
07:18Saudi Arabia.
07:19All right.
07:20Kent, the United States or Saudi Arabia?
07:22Saudi Arabia.
07:23Wrong.
07:23It's the United States.
07:25Nobody wants box number eight.
07:32Wait a minute, Joey.
07:33They get easier as we go along.
07:35We're back to Jill.
07:41What do you want to do, Jill?
07:42Oh, well, I want to go for the $100 number eight.
07:45She wants to stick with frickin' crack here.
07:47Is this the Joey and Bill show?
07:48Yeah.
07:48What is this?
07:49It's the Joey and Bill show.
07:51Here's our next question, Joey and Bill.
07:53What is the length of time it takes the Earth to rotate around the sun?
07:58Okay.
07:59If you know anything about navigation and you know anything at all about the solar system,
08:03you will find out it takes exactly one day.
08:07One day.
08:07Bill Dana.
08:08I have to add $364 to that.
08:11It takes one year.
08:12Well, you have a wide choice there, Jill.
08:14Is it one day or one year for that box number eight, the $100 box?
08:18One year.
08:19That's it.
08:20She finally got it.
08:21All right.
08:22You now have two $100 boxes, and if you get the third one, you can win the game in $300.
08:27Pick a box.
08:28Nine.
08:28Number nine, please.
08:29Number nine.
08:30Can we see box number nine?
08:31Did she find the third $100 box?
08:33She did not.
08:33Over to you, Kent.
08:34Kent, Delora.
08:35Number seven, please.
08:36Number seven.
08:36Box number seven, please.
08:37He's looking for a block here.
08:38Did he find the $100 box?
08:41Could we see it?
08:41Seven, please.
08:42It is a wild card.
08:44And you can use that for any denomination you wish, but of course, you must earn it.
08:47And that card is connected to Liz Torres and Bill Dana.
08:51Liz, what do you have if you grab a Spaniard's gazpacho?
09:00A rare disease.
09:03Well, I happen to be a, you know, I know all about ethnic.
09:07Cultures, it's really soup.
09:09Bill Dana.
09:11Spaniard's gazpacho.
09:11You grab a Spaniard's gazpacho, you have his undivided attention.
09:17You have, what you have, of course, is his cape.
09:23All right.
09:23Kent, soup or cape?
09:25Soup.
09:26Soup is it.
09:27You got it.
09:27Gazpacho, you now have a wild card.
09:29Any denomination you want.
09:30Pick a little box.
09:33All right.
09:33Number four, please.
09:34Number four, can we see?
09:35He's still looking for that hundred dollar box for a block.
09:37Could we see box number four?
09:39And he found it.
09:40All right.
09:42Yet there in the boat belongs to Marianne Mowgli and to Beverly Garland.
09:45Hey, Marianne.
09:46Hey.
09:46What is the name for the imaginary geographic lines that pass through the North and South
09:51Poles?
09:52Uh, North and South Poles.
09:54I think it's, uh, uh, longitude lines.
09:59Uh-huh.
09:59Beverly Garland?
10:00Listen, my daughter just did this in school and it's latitude lines.
10:04I see.
10:05All right.
10:06Kent, is it longitude or latitude?
10:09Latitude.
10:09Wrong.
10:10Longitude lines.
10:11Just me.
10:12Marianne had the right answer.
10:13The box returns to its neutral position and the control goes back to Jill Sefton and
10:17we'll find out which box she wants to go to right before.
10:20Don't go away.
10:22I wonder.
10:26Well, when we left you last, Jill Sefton was ready to say she wants box number what, Jill?
10:31Four.
10:31Box number four she wants.
10:33She knows.
10:33Could we see box four, please?
10:35It's a one hundred dollar box.
10:36And now, Jill, if you get this box, you will win the game three hundred dollars and a special
10:42surprise prize.
10:44Are you all set?
10:45Yes, sir.
10:46All right.
10:46Marianne Mobley, Beverly Garland.
10:49Marianne, what does the prefix tele, T-E-L-E, mean?
10:56Tele means distant.
11:01Beverly Garland, tele, T-E-L-E, what does that mean?
11:04Tele, telephony, means to send.
11:07To send.
11:08All right.
11:09Does it mean distant or to send for the game and three hundred dollars?
11:14Your answer is?
11:16Distant.
11:17That is it.
11:17You've won the game.
11:19Three hundred dollars and a special surprise prize.
11:24I thought you were going to go for Tusan there for a moment.
11:28Very well done.
11:29Jill Sefton, she's won a game.
11:31And we now have to say goodbye to Kent Candelora.
11:33Kent takes with him, of course.
11:35What does he have there in previous earnings?
11:37He has none.
11:38But we have some very nice gifts for you backstage.
11:40Did you enjoy playing the game?
11:41Yes, I did.
11:41That's terrific, Kent.
11:42Thank you very much.
11:44All right.
11:46Found out where that wild card was.
11:48And I told you, Jill, that you'd not only win the game in three hundred dollars, but I
11:51said a special surprise prize.
11:53Johnny Jacobs, what is it?
11:54Tom, it's luggage.
11:56Jill, get ready for your vacation with a full set of sturdy and durable Gran Largo luggage
12:01by Leeds, blending sophisticated styling and utility in an exciting fashion ensemble.
12:05Gran Largo luggage by Leeds.
12:09There you go, Jill.
12:11Congratulations to you once again.
12:12You now have a total in cash of twenty seven hundred dollars and in gifts of sixty three
12:18seventy and a grand total of in excess of eight thousand dollars.
12:22Very well done.
12:22Thanks once again, Kent.
12:24Our jackpot, our bank, will be at eight thousand dollars in the next game, which we'll play
12:27after this.
12:28Don't go away.
12:35Well, this is our current champ, Jill Sefton, a public relations counselor and the youngest
12:40and prettiest grandmother I've ever seen.
12:42And so far, yes.
12:44Grandmother?
12:45Grandmother.
12:45Twice.
12:46One boy, one girl.
12:47It doesn't matter to me.
12:48Give me your secrets.
12:49I have one correction to make, however, Jill.
12:51Bill, you have in cash and prices a total of five thousand nine hundred dollars.
12:56And you have also earned the right now to challenge a brand new challenger.
13:01Johnny Jenkins, would you want to do some pleasure?
13:03Yes, I will, Tom.
13:04He's an insurance administrator whose hobbies are skiing, kayaking and cooking.
13:08Bill Ellingson.
13:09Welcome aboard, Bill.
13:10Bill, are you married or something?
13:12I'm married.
13:13How long have you been married?
13:14Nineteen months.
13:15Nineteen months.
13:16Well, they should have that in there.
13:17Skiing, kayaking, cooking and honeymooning.
13:20Okay.
13:20Welcome, Bill.
13:21And since you're our new challenger, we're going to start the game with you.
13:24You know how we play the game, don't you?
13:25And we're going to add that we add five hundred dollars at the end of every game to our bank.
13:29So in this game, the bank is worth eight thousand dollars.
13:33That's what we're after.
13:34Pick a box there, Bill.
13:35Let's go.
13:36Number thirteen.
13:37Number thirteen.
13:37Lucky number thirteen.
13:38Could we see box number thirteen, please?
13:40What did he find?
13:41A one hundred dollar box.
13:42And that is connected to Mr. Joey Bishop and to Fanny Flagg.
13:45Joey, according to sexologists, when is the worst time to have sex?
13:52Depends upon your age.
13:53If you're over sixty, the worst time to have sex is right after you've had sex.
14:00If you're over sixty.
14:04I would say, because sex is really the art of lovemaking, it should be beautiful, I would
14:11say the worst time to have sex is when you're drunk.
14:13Uh-huh.
14:14Fanny Flagg.
14:15Oh, I don't know.
14:16Oh.
14:19A lot of you don't know, Fanny.
14:21Have a few drinks and join me.
14:24No, uh, actually, uh, Bill, the worst time is right after you've had a big meal, because
14:29it causes indigestion.
14:31Oh.
14:33Well, Bill, you've heard our two experts.
14:36So is it when you're drunk or is it immediately after eating?
14:40I would say when you're drunk.
14:41No, it's immediately after eating because it may cause indigestion.
14:45That box returns to its neutral position.
14:47Back to you, Jill.
14:48I will go for number thirteen, please.
14:50Number thirteen, all right, once again, it's connected to Joey Bishop and to Fanny Flagg.
14:55Joey, here's your question, sir.
14:57Right.
14:58Martin Luther's teachings are the basis of the Lutheran religion.
15:01To pinpoint approximately when he lived, name another famous person who lived sometime during
15:07the lifetime of Martin Luther.
15:09Okay, I happen to be a Bible student, although I'm not that well versed in the Lutheran religion.
15:15But the gentleman, the well-known gentleman who lived in those particular days was Napoleon
15:20Bonaparte.
15:21Uh-huh.
15:22Fanny Flagg, can you name another famous person who lived sometime during the life of Martin
15:27Luther?
15:28No, I am sure about this.
15:30I believe it was a gentleman that was a friend of the Queen, Christopher Columbus.
15:34Uh-huh.
15:35All right, Jill, was it Napoleon Bonaparte or Christopher Columbus?
15:41Uh, Christopher Columbus.
15:44That's right.
15:45You got it.
15:45And you have a one hundred dollar box.
15:47Pick another box there, Jill.
15:48Oh.
15:50We put lips on that box and we need to blow it to you.
15:52Go ahead.
15:52Uh, number fourteen, please, for another hundred.
15:54All right.
15:55Could we see you at box number fourteen looking for another one hundred dollar box?
15:58Hey, you found the money bag.
15:59Now, so as you know, three money bags will break the bank.
16:02It's exactly eight thousand dollars.
16:04Now, you can keep that bag and forfeit your turn or you can refuse it and keep on playing.
16:08What do you want to do?
16:08I will refuse it and keep on playing.
16:09She wants to keep playing.
16:11Return it to its neutral position.
16:12Pick another box.
16:13Number eight, please.
16:14Box number eight.
16:15She's still looking for a hundred dollar box.
16:16So we see box number eight.
16:18And she found a wild card, but you have to earn that wild card.
16:22It was connected to Joey Bishop and to Mr. Bill Gaynor.
16:26And, Joey, here is your question, sir.
16:27What is the minimum age for a candidate running for election to the United States Senate?
16:34Minimum age.
16:37Thirty years.
16:39Bill Dana, minimum age for a candidate running for United States Senate.
16:44I happen to know that is thirty-five years old.
16:47Jill, for that wild card, is it thirty years or thirty-five years old?
16:52Thirty years.
16:53You've got it.
16:54Thirty years is it.
16:55You now have, in effect, the $100 box.
16:58If you get the third $100 box to win the game in $300, pick a box, Jill.
17:02Number 12, please.
17:03She's looking for another $100 box.
17:06And if she does, she could win.
17:07Could we see that box, please?
17:09It is a $200 box.
17:10That is connected to Liz Torres and to Fanny Flagg.
17:13Liz, when you store eggs in the refrigerator, what should you do with their large end?
17:22Ease it out of the hand.
17:27Uh, you put it down.
17:30Put it, put it down.
17:32Tom, put it down.
17:33Put it down.
17:34Yes.
17:34Got it.
17:35Put it down.
17:36All right, Fanny Flagg?
17:37Hi.
17:37Hi.
17:38They don't call me Fanny for nothing.
17:40Now, let me tell you something.
17:42You know what you do with it?
17:43What?
17:43You have to put it up.
17:45Oh.
17:45So the little yoke will get in the middle.
17:46You have a simple choice to make, Jill.
17:48Do you put it up or do you put it down, the large end of the egg?
17:51I will go with Fanny and say, you put it up.
17:54You're right.
17:55You put it up is what you do.
17:58And now, you have either two $200 boxes or two $100 boxes as you now stand.
18:05Pick another box.
18:06Oh.
18:08Oh.
18:09I'll pick number seven, please.
18:10Number seven.
18:10For another $200.
18:11This could mean the game for you.
18:13And $600, if this is a $200 box.
18:17Could we see that this is a $200 box?
18:20Now, just to win for you the game and $600 and a very special surprise prize.
18:26That box is connected to Liz Torres and to Mr. Bill Dana.
18:30And here is your question, Liz.
18:32Mira, papi.
18:33Excuse me.
18:34Okay.
18:34How does the Bible describe the fruit that Eve gave Adam to eat?
18:40How does the Bible describe the fruit that Eve gave Adam to eat?
18:45A very tasty apple.
18:48Taste the apple.
18:49Bill Dana.
18:50It is described as the forbidden fruit.
18:53All right.
18:54Is it for the game, $600, another special surprise prize.
18:59Is it the apple or forbidden fruit?
19:02The apple.
19:03It was described as the forbidden fruit.
19:06The game is still alive, folks.
19:08The box returns.
19:09Number seven returns to the neutral position.
19:11Bill, you're alive, my friend.
19:13Pick a box up there.
19:14What do you want?
19:14Number five, please, for $300.
