00:02Then you must be better than me. Understand?
00:08Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we're honoring not only the dads who raised their children from birth,
00:14but also the video game dads that stepped up and fully gave themselves over to the primal urge to protect
00:20the young.
00:21You, Diana!
00:22Yes.
00:24Oh.
00:26Diana?
00:28Diana!
00:29Diana!
00:31Before we continue, be sure to subscribe to our channel and ring the bell to get notified about our latest
00:36videos.
00:39Bowser, Super Mario Series.
00:44Junior, I've got something difficult to tell you about Princess Peach.
00:49I know, she's not really my mama.
00:53Bowser might not immediately be the first dad you think of when it comes to video game dads,
00:57but he is actually a very devoted father to his fiercely loyal son, Bowser Jr.
01:03Bowser isn't the best role model, spending his time kidnapping princesses and battling his plumber nemesis in every sport under
01:09the sun,
01:10but Bowser Jr. is always right by his side learning from his father, bad habits and all.
01:15Sure, Bowser can seem a bit aggressive or stern, but Bowser Jr. knows his father loves him and seems to
01:21enjoy pushing his buttons.
01:22Even with all his bad behavior, Bowser is a faithfully devoted and loving father,
01:27giving his son everything he could hope for and every advantage to be able to take over the Mushroom Kingdom
01:32on his own one day.
01:34I wanna fight that Mario again.
01:37That's right, boy.
01:39Well put, son.
01:40The Royal Cooper Life is as strong as ever.
01:43John Marston, Red Dead Redemption.
01:45How's the boy?
01:47Oh, like you.
01:50And like me.
01:52Well, he's like a kid growing up without a father.
01:55That ain't fair.
01:56We don't get to see much of John being a father until near the end of the game,
01:59but everything he did up to the moment he reunites with his family was done to ensure their safety.
02:05The little time we get to see John with Jack, he tries his best to connect with his son,
02:10something most fathers can relate to as their children outgrow the constant need for them.
02:14Having given up his life as an outlaw to live a normal life,
02:17John struggles to leave the past behind him and hopes to build a better future for Jack.
02:22Ultimately, the only real connection John can have with Jack is through his heroic sacrifice
02:27that allows Jack to escape with his mother, Abigail.
02:30Sadly, it's through this sacrifice that John unfortunately sends Jack down a similar path to his own,
02:35turning him into the very outlaw John never wanted him to be.
02:47Geralt, The Witcher 3, Wild Hunt
02:49Ciri's most important in all of this.
02:52The hunt's after her, and we have to defend her at all costs.
02:56Honestly, the most surprising thing to come out of Geralt's adoption of Ciri through the Law of Surprise
03:00was just what a caring and doting father he turned out to be.
03:04Since Witchers are unable to have children,
03:07Geralt never dreamed of having any kids of his own until Ciri was thrust into his life.
03:11Geralt immediately took Ciri under his wing and began training her to be a warrior,
03:16and Geralt himself proves to be a better father than Ciri's biological one.
03:20Despite his reputation and gruff exterior,
03:23when it comes to Ciri, Geralt is a big old softie,
03:26and it's his devotion to Ciri that allows the others around him to bond and grow together into an unconventional
03:31family.
03:32Whenever Ciri is involved, you'd better pray you don't stand between Geralt and his daughter.
03:37Don't treat me like a child.
03:40You didn't even do that when you were one.
03:45I like it when you smile.
03:49Come here.
03:54Kazuma Kiryu, Yakuza Series
04:10Players might be more familiar with Kazuma solving problems with his fists than being a stable father figure,
04:15but throughout the entirety of the Yakuza series, Kazuma not only becomes a father figure for many,
04:21but even becomes the owner of the Sunflower Orphanage and a stand-in father to all the children.
04:26Kazuma balances his work life and his brutality with preparing meals for the many children,
04:31and even comes out of retirement in order to keep his kids safe.
04:34Frankly, much of what drives Kazuma's actions throughout the Yakuza series is to keep his orphanage and the children safe
04:40and give them a better life.
04:42Kazuma might rarely crack a smile, but beneath that cold and brutal exterior beats the heart of a man who
04:48always wanted to be a dad,
04:49but never made the time, so he instead created his own family.
05:04Lee Everett, The Walking Dead
05:06As a former teacher, Lee Everett naturally knows how to nurture and protect children,
05:17but his unexpected relationship with Clementine hits a bit closer to home.
05:21From the moment the two meet at the start of the end of the world, Lee takes Clementine in,
05:26attempting to shield her from the many new horrors of the world and guide her how to survive and protect
05:31herself.
05:32Despite the circumstances, Lee still hopes for Clem to have a normal life and allows her to be a kid
05:37whenever possible.
05:38It's only thanks to Lee's guidance and fatherly love that Clementine can't survive in a world without him.
05:44Right up until the end, Lee continues to teach Clem how to live a good life and survive against overwhelming
05:50odds,
05:50and, in the end, makes the ultimate sacrifice to ensure her safety,
05:54only hoping she took his teachings to heart and was able to go on without him.
05:59I'll miss you.
06:02Me too.
06:05Barrett Wallace
06:05Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth
06:08Daddy says never talk to strangers.
06:20Don't let Barrett's rough and rugged exterior fool you.
06:23Beneath all those muscles and firepower, he's nothing but a big old teddy bear to his adopted daughter Marlene.
06:29The recent remakes of Final Fantasy VII gave further depth to Barrett and Marlene's relationship,
06:33and the tragic story of how the two became a family.
06:36Although it breaks his heart, Barrett knows in order to secure a better future for Marlene,
06:41he needs to leave her behind no matter how dangerous the mission becomes.
06:45Barrett's ultimate goal is to leave the world for his daughter better than the one he lived in,
06:49which is something every parent can sympathize with.
06:52Watching the tonal shift between when Barrett is addressing Avalanche,
06:55particularly when he's annoyed with Cloud,
06:57versus his interactions with Marlene are adorable,
07:00and shows just how much he loves that little girl with all of his big old heart.
07:05You'll come back, right?
07:09Of course, I promise.
07:11Ethan Winters, Resident Evil Village
07:14There you go, sweetheart.
07:16Don't you worry.
07:18I'll be right downstairs.
07:20Daddy won't let those weird fairy tale monsters get you.
07:22Few dads have sacrificed like Ethan Winters.
07:26After narrowly surviving the Bakers,
07:28Ethan is once again thrust into hell,
07:30this time against vampires, werewolves,
07:33and things that don't even have categories to save his infant daughter Rose.
07:37Torn literally apart,
07:39Ethan battles through the many supernatural horrors,
07:41uncertain if Rose is even alive or can be saved.
07:45But he is going to kill everything in his path until he finds her.
07:49Ethan embodies everything a father strives to be,
07:52sacrificing literal life and limb to protect his child from the horrors of the world.
07:56And in the end, it's his undying love for Rose that saves her,
08:00and not even death can stop him from watching over his baby girl as she grows.
08:05Bonus shout-out to Chris Redfield for stepping into the fatherly role
08:08after Ethan's heroic sacrifice as well,
08:10and teaching Rose to protect herself from all the dangers Chris knows are out there.
08:15Whoa, it's just a joke, Rose.
08:18I can show you things even Chris doesn't know I can do.
08:25Hugh, Pragmata.
08:26You're just gonna stay here when this is all done?
08:30What do you want?
08:34I want...
08:36to go to Earth.
08:39With you.
08:40Can I really go?
08:41The newest entry in the dad game genre,
08:44Hugh's relationship with Diana is the most dad-like we've ever gotten to be in a video game.
08:49While yes, the primary goal of Pragmata is surviving the cradle and escaping back to Earth,
08:53it's the little moments in between that are the most meaningful.
08:57Diana is free to play back at the shelter,
08:59and players can even gift Diana remnants of Earth for her to mess around with.
09:03Hugh and Diana even bond outside of conflict with Diana's curiosity about Earth,
09:08bringing up Hugh's memories of his childhood and life back on Earth.
09:11Through these interactions, both Hugh and the player fall in love with Diana,
09:16almost immediately wanting to protect her from all the dangers of the cradle
09:19and let her live a normal life as a child.
09:22Hugh becomes Diana's fierce protector,
09:24and despite he claims he never wanted kids,
09:27clearly makes an exception for Diana.
09:38Kratos, God of War 2018, and God of War Ragnarok.
09:51We don't really get to see much of Kratos as a father during the Greek era,
09:55but the few snippets we do see,
09:57he was a devoted father to young Calliope who loved him dearly.
10:01God of War 2018 gave us a much closer look at Kratos' parenting style,
10:05and to call it distant would be an understatement.
10:08Kratos clearly cares for Atreus,
10:10but is too guarded to allow himself to embrace fatherhood again,
10:13until he nearly loses Atreus.
10:16This marked a turning point in their relationship,
10:18and the aftermath of this new relationship only grew in the sequel Ragnarok,
10:22as Kratos fights with Atreus' growing curiosity and desire to forge his own path,
10:27and Kratos' inherent need to protect the only family he has left.
10:31Kratos is the strong, firm, but always supportive father we all wanted growing up,
10:36allowing Atreus to find his own path,
10:38but holding tight to the bond they share.
10:41Loki will go.
10:45Atreus.
10:49Atreus remains.
10:55Joel, The Last of Us, Part 1.
10:58Oh, ha ha.
11:00Where did you get the money for this?
11:02Drugs.
11:03I sell hardcore drugs.
11:05Oh, good.
11:06We started helping out with the mortgage then.
11:08Yeah, you wish.
11:09When you think of a video game dad,
11:11chances are Joel is one of the first to come to mind,
11:14and for good reason.
11:15After the tragic loss of his daughter on outbreak day,
11:18Joel became a shell of himself,
11:20closed off from nearly everything and everyone,
11:23until he met Ellie.
11:25During their trek across the U.S.,
11:27Joel's demeanor softens,
11:28and his protective instincts take over from simply protecting Ellie as part of his job,
11:32to protecting her as his connection to his old self and the dad he used to be.
11:37Ellie could never replace Sarah,
11:38but she healed a part of Joel that had been closed off,
11:41and brought out the fatherly instincts that were always there,
11:44waiting for the right child to break down the walls,
11:46and allow him to be the father he always wanted to be once again.
11:50I struggled for a long time with surviving.
11:55And you...
11:56no matter what...
12:00you keep finding something to fight for.
12:03Who was your favorite video game dad,
12:05and who reminds you the most of your dad,
12:06or the dad you want to be?
