00:00:00Now, don't blame that little lump on your computer cable for getting stuck somewhere for the umpteenth time.
00:00:07The cylinder, shapes and colors may vary, actually prevents interference from other signals, like those your phone emits.
00:00:15A lack of privacy in public bathrooms, I mean those large gaps beneath where normal doors tend to be, is
00:00:22there for a reason.
00:00:23This way, people do their business faster and there are fewer lines.
00:00:28Also, if something goes wrong, it's easy to find a person who needs help.
00:00:33In London, there are some poles that kind of look like street lamps, but there are no bulbs.
00:00:39Well, their official name is stink pipes, and they're a thing of the past now, but they used to come
00:00:45in handy back in the nineteenth century.
00:00:47These hollow poles would vent away the air and explosive gases with bad smells to prevent, shall we say, unwanted
00:00:55consequences.
00:00:57Blank pages in the books aren't actually for the author's signature.
00:01:01It's all about the manufacturing process.
00:01:04Books are printed on large sheets, so one sheet can fit in four pages.
00:01:09If a book has an odd quantity of printed pages, chances are you'll get a blank one for notes.
00:01:15Now, originally, golf balls were smooth, but some time ago, players noticed that overused balls with damages flew better than
00:01:24brand new ones.
00:01:25At some point, they started producing balls with dimples.
00:01:30Windshield black dots help disperse the sun glaring right into your eyes.
00:01:34This sort of frame keeps the UV rays away, so it serves as sunglasses for your car.
00:01:41The tab on the rearview mirror has obvious functions.
00:01:44It holds your air freshener, that cute toy.
00:01:47But in reality, it was meant to be a tumbler between day and night mode.
00:01:52It reduces the glare from the car behind you, so you can't be blinded.
00:01:58Colored dots on chip bags aren't as useful as those on the windshield, but they have a purpose too.
00:02:04Manufacturers need them to control the package color and show what ink color was used on the package.
00:02:09No big deal.
00:02:11Your microwave has a silent mode.
00:02:14Seriously.
00:02:15If those beeps drive you nuts, press 1 or 0 and hold.
00:02:19It might work.
00:02:21Also, there is sometimes a silent button you kept ignoring all this time.
00:02:25Anyway, there are no two identical microwaves, so a manual should come in handy.
00:02:32Grocery cart loops have more functions than you think.
00:02:35You don't want to put your fancy white jacket in a cart next to carrots and coke.
00:02:40This little hook-like thingy helps organize all the stuff in your cart better, so you can enjoy your shopping
00:02:47trip.
00:02:48Another thingy we often neglect is a point on an ointment cap.
00:02:53Most tubes are usually sealed with plastic film or foil, and opening it with your fingernails isn't the best idea.
00:03:00A point easily opens even the most safely sealed tube.
00:03:06Automatic lip liners and eye pencils have a sharpener installed in the package.
00:03:11The lid on the back part of the pencil doesn't only reveal the color.
00:03:15You can pull it out and sharpen up the product.
00:03:18Toothpicks come in different varieties, and one of them is a bit puzzling.
00:03:23Sometimes they have several grooves.
00:03:25The first one is weak, so it's easy to break the toothpick in two.
00:03:29The smaller section with one more groove can be used as a stand to avoid the contact with the table.
00:03:37You can make a makeshift stand for disposable chopsticks.
00:03:40They have a sort of lump at one side before you split the pair.
00:03:44So, next time you have a sushi dinner, try breaking off that lump instead of regular splitting.
00:03:50When you want to take a sushi break, just place the stick on this stand.
00:03:56Yeah, you've heard before that a drawer beneath your oven is there for keeping the food warm if the guests
00:04:02are running late.
00:04:03Here's one more hidden function.
00:04:05You can slow cook on lower temperatures in that drawer, too.
00:04:09All the bottles used to be of the same green color once.
00:04:13But later it was discovered that brown ones are way better at blocking UV light.
00:04:19Say no more.
00:04:21Stickers on fruit seem to provide zero information about the product.
00:04:25But if you look closer, you'll find some numbers that can tell you more.
00:04:30A five-digit number where the first number is 9 is a good sign.
00:04:34You're about to buy an organic product.
00:04:37A four-digit number starting with a 3 or 4 means it was conventionally farmed.
00:04:43And if the number starts with an 8 and there are five digits, well, it's best to leave it on
00:04:48the shelf.
00:04:50A dollar has its secrets, too.
00:04:53A large letter with a rim shows which bank is responsible for issuing this bill.
00:04:59There are 12 banks distributing currency.
00:05:01For example, the L says it was printed in San Francisco.
00:05:06Now, some cups look like they're chipped on the bottom, but they're produced this way.
00:05:11In fact, these dimples are supposed to keep the cup in place on wet surfaces, and it doesn't let excess
00:05:17water accumulate while it's in a dishwasher.
00:05:20Small hollows in a chocolate box are designed for chocolate lovers.
00:05:24Press the closest deepening to the chocolate that you want to grab, and it'll jump out of the box right
00:05:30into your hand.
00:05:31Bath foam can be more than just a pleasant smell.
00:05:35It also has a sort of thermoregulatory function.
00:05:39The bubbles save water heat, so you can enjoy your bath a little longer.
00:05:44Disclaimer, it works for acrylic bathtubs only.
00:05:47Those made of metal lose heat fast, no matter how much foam you make.
00:05:53A good doorknob is one that's made of brass, bronze, or some copper alloys.
00:05:58These metals have an anti-germ effect.
00:06:01Bacteria spread way slower on them.
00:06:04They also get rid of germs pretty fast, within a couple of hours.
00:06:08No, it doesn't mean you don't have to wash your hands.
00:06:12If you pour milk or juice right onto your t-shirt every single time, you're probably not doing it right.
00:06:19Try pouring it from the other side of the carton.
00:06:22It sloshes less and is easier to control.
00:06:26There's only one way you can store your peanut butter right.
00:06:30If you place it the regular way, it may get a bit solid before long.
00:06:34The trick is to store it upside down, so the oils don't stay on the bottom all the time and
00:06:40distribute evenly.
00:06:42A dinner jacket has small pockets above regular ones, and they're not useless.
00:06:48They're called ticket pockets, and were designed so that gentlemen wearing such jackets
00:06:53could easily access the tickets and show them on a train.
00:06:57They could also store cash and other small loose items in a super convenient way.
00:07:02Now, whatever coffee shop you go to, all the disposable cups look exactly the same, only the logo changes.
00:07:10The secret here is the special shape that allows you to enjoy your drink easily.
00:07:16The top is always wider, which allows it to accommodate your nose while you're drinking.
00:07:21And the bottom is always narrower, so that anyone can hold it easier, even if the hand is quite small.
00:07:28This width difference also allows the cups to stack.
00:07:33Triangular flaps on small juice cartons can help control unwanted spillage.
00:07:38If you flip them and use them as handles for the carton,
00:07:41you won't press the package so the juice won't be squeezed uncontrollably.
00:07:46Now, if you have a mason jar and a blender with a screw on top, this secret is life-changing.
00:07:52You can actually put a mason jar directly onto the blender and make any shake you want without having to
00:07:59wash the blender jar.
00:08:00Just don't put your device on max.
00:08:04There's one trick you can use to make salt and pepper come out smoothly.
00:08:08Grab a container with pepper or salt.
00:08:11Turn it upside down.
00:08:12There are ridges on the bottom of the shaker.
00:08:14Now, grab the second container and rub those ridges together.
00:08:19The vibrations will make the product literally flow out.
00:08:23Most headphones, both wired and wireless, have little holes.
00:08:27They're needed to ensure good sound.
00:08:30The air circulates through those holes, which is important for the sound quality.
00:08:35Stick sachets were designed smartly.
00:08:38No need to tear one of its edges.
00:08:41The right way is to tear them down the middle.
00:08:43Now, you may say it's not a big difference, but at least there's less mess with those torn paper bits.
00:08:50If two zips for one section seem a bit too much for you, it's probably time you started using them
00:08:57wisely.
00:08:57It's a great pickpocket proof.
00:08:59You can put on a small lock on those zippers and make sure no one but you can open your
00:09:04backpack.
00:09:05Hide the key in the fifth pocket on your jeans that was originally designed to keep watches safe.
00:09:11So, now you know.
00:09:14You know what?
00:09:15Onions can help fight off the flu.
00:09:17Hmm.
00:09:18And apparently they can do it in various ways.
00:09:20Like, you can put them in your socks, which somehow transfer their disease-fighting abilities through your feet.
00:09:26Or you can drink onion-infused water to treat or prevent illnesses like colds or the flu.
00:09:31Well, unfortunately, these are all false beliefs.
00:09:35When it comes to directly combating cold or flu viruses, onions are unlikely to have a superimpact.
00:09:41But overall, they're good for you.
00:09:43At the same time, onions do have a high concentration of quercetin.
00:09:48It's a pigment known for its potential anti-inflammatory properties.
00:09:53The correct way to open a new deodorant is by manually prying the top off.
00:09:58Nope.
00:09:59Removing the cap from a new deodorant stick involves twisting it.
00:10:02This move triggers the mechanism to push the safety cap off.
00:10:06This method helps avoid the hassle of manually prying the lid off, leaving deodorant residue under your nails.
00:10:14Now, what about the ideal time for using deodorant?
00:10:17You might think it's in the morning before you leave the house.
00:10:20But the optimal time to use deodorant is in the evening.
00:10:23At this time, your body temperature is cooler and your underarms are less moist,
00:10:28providing a greater opportunity for the deodorant to work effectively on your skin.
00:10:33Applying deodorant in the morning is still okay for those people who don't suffer from excessive sweating.
00:10:38So, if you sweat a moderate amount, there's no reason to change your daily routine.
00:10:44Now, keeping your shower curtain inside or outside the tub is a choice.
00:10:48But, apparently, putting the shower curtain inside the tub reduces splashing and prevents water from escaping.
00:10:55The decorative cloth curtain belongs on the outside, whereas the plastic one should be on the inside.
00:11:00I mean, the whole idea is to prevent splashing water.
00:11:04Now, watering your plants on scorching hot days harms them.
00:11:08Mmm.
00:11:09Rain showers occur during the summer season all over the world, and plants easily survive in these conditions.
00:11:15At the same time, when you water your plants on hot days,
00:11:18a substantial amount of liquid might evaporate before it can effectively benefit the plants.
00:11:23It's worth noting that this might be different for some sensitive indoor plants, such as African violets.
00:11:30It can result in leaf damage if you pour very cold water directly onto their leaves.
00:11:35Now, let's continue with another garden-related thing.
00:11:39Tree roots only reach as far as the outer edge of tree branches.
00:11:43Myth or fact?
00:11:44Well, it's a misconception.
00:11:46The root systems of many trees can extend well beyond the diameter of their crowns.
00:11:51For instance, magnolia trees can have roots that reach nearly four times their crown diameter,
00:11:57while the roots of red maple trees can exceed their crowns by up to three times.
00:12:02It's easier to shuck corn before it's boiled.
00:12:05Well, in the past, before the invention of modern cooking methods, many recipes involved pre-shucked corn.
00:12:11However, you can still grill it with or without the husk when it comes to recipes like grilled corn.
00:12:17A recommended technique is to partially shuck the corn,
00:12:20leaving only a few layers closer to the cob still attached.
00:12:23This method retains moisture while also providing appealing char marks on certain kernels.
00:12:30Alternatively, you can cook whole, unshucked ears of corn in the microwave or by boiling it, if you prefer.
00:12:38Moving on with everyday items you've been storing wrong.
00:12:42Take eggs, for example.
00:12:44Leaving them in the fridge door is good for them, right?
00:12:46No, this can lead to a rollercoaster of temperatures every time you grab a snack.
00:12:52As for nuts, they're happier in the fridge.
00:12:54He can make them go all wonky, especially if they're the kind with lots of good fats.
00:12:59So, keeping them chilled helps them stay fresher and tastier.
00:13:04There's another common myth about nuts.
00:13:06It's said that roasting them decreases calories, proteins, carbs, and fibers they contain.
00:13:12But no, both cooked and uncooked nuts have similar amounts of those.
00:13:16The main goal of roasting nuts is to enhance their flavor and crunchiness.
00:13:20Keep this in mind, though.
00:13:22When nuts are roasted, the healthy fats they contain may get damaged.
00:13:26And in the end, this can result in a reduced nutrient content.
00:13:30Now, let's talk about avocados.
00:13:33Don't toss them in the fridge if you want them to ripen on schedule.
00:13:37They like hanging out at room temperature.
00:13:39We can also put an end to another avocado-related myth.
00:13:43Avocados are fattening.
00:13:45Yeah, they do have a high-fat content, compared with most other fruits.
00:13:49But this doesn't necessarily make them bad for your health.
00:13:52In fact, avocados contain what's often called healthy fats,
00:13:56which can help reduce harmful cholesterol levels in your body.
00:14:00Now, let's carry on with diet and food.
00:14:02Swapping white table sugar for unrefined options like honey, maple syrup, and coconut sugar
00:14:08is supposed to make your diet healthier.
00:14:10Well, don't fall for this myth.
00:14:13Sugar is sugar, no matter whether it's refined or unrefined.
00:14:17While unrefined sugars may contain a few extra vitamins and minerals,
00:14:21the advantage is minimal because they're still considered added sugars.
00:14:25These added sugars can add up and contribute to your diet's recommended limit on daily sugar intake.
00:14:32Full-fat products aren't a one-way ticket to weight gain.
00:14:36That's a myth from the 80s and 90s.
00:14:38Some people are still scared of fat, but it shouldn't be the case.
00:14:41Fat plays a few essential roles, such as protecting our organs, maintaining cell membranes,
00:14:47supporting health and development, and helping absorb vital vitamins.
00:14:51The key is to choose heart-healthy unsaturated fats like olive oil, canola oil, nuts, nut butter, and avocados
00:15:00oversaturated in trans fats found in fatty meats and high-fat dairy products.
00:15:06There's a common belief that avoiding carbs entirely will make you lose weight.
00:15:10Well, that's a myth too.
00:15:12Low-carb diets have made their rounds, vilifying carbs, including fruits and whole grains.
00:15:17While some people have had success with these diets,
00:15:20it's usually because they've cut out highly processed, carb-laden foods,
00:15:24like chips, cookies, and white bread.
00:15:26You know, all the stuff we like.
00:15:28Eliminating an entire food group isn't the best approach,
00:15:31as you might miss out on essential nutrients.
00:15:35Another belief is that you can get rid of body toxins with a detox diet.
00:15:39Well, sorry, most detox diets don't live up to their promises.
00:15:44Your body is already good at detoxing itself with the help of your liver, kidneys, and gastrointestinal tract.
00:15:50You don't need to buy any special products.
00:15:53If you want to rejuvenate your body, focus on eating more whole foods,
00:15:57staying hydrated, and cutting out highly processed junk food.
00:16:03Okay, I have three life hacks for you.
00:16:05These aren't myths.
00:16:07Firstly, you can stop a pot from boiling over by putting a wooden spoon over its top.
00:16:12Secondly, if you position a cheese grater vertically, there's a better way to use it.
00:16:17Lay it down horizontally.
00:16:19This way, the process will be less taxing for your arms.
00:16:22My next tip is about your yoga mat.
00:16:25Leaving it in a hot, humid spot like your car can ruin it.
00:16:29Keep it cool and dry for maximum yoga zen.
00:16:33Now, many people know they should keep their fancy fragrance bottles away from direct sunlight.
00:16:38So, some people store them in the refrigerator.
00:16:41This isn't the right move, unless you want your perfume to lose its overall depth.
00:16:46I mean, yes, fragrances don't like heat or humidity, but the interior of a refrigerator is too dry and cold
00:16:53for them.
00:16:54So, it has the opposite effect and breaks down the scent molecules.
00:16:58And please, resist the urge to rub a bit of perfume on your wrist.
00:17:02It may be tempting, but rubbing your fragrances is a big no-no.
00:17:06This practice not only muddles and weakens the scent, it also causes the top notes to evaporate quickly.
00:17:15They say that if you have old photos in your house, the right way to stash them is by putting
00:17:21them in cardboard boxes.
00:17:23Well, this is a misconception.
00:17:25These types of boxes can damage your memories.
00:17:28Go for acid-free archival boxes if you want your pictures to look as good as new.
00:17:33The next one is more of a hack than a myth.
00:17:36It turns out dishwashers are more user-friendly than we give them credit for.
00:17:40When you're loading or unloading the dishwasher, you can save your poor back from unnecessary strain by pulling out the
00:17:47basket.
00:17:49You might think that foundations are safe at room temperature.
00:17:52But if you store your foundation in a makeup bag, heat can mess with the oils in your makeup.
00:17:57So, pop this product in a cool drawer.
00:18:00Eye creams and serums can benefit from the chill too.
00:18:03Organic or homemade cosmetics without preservatives should also be refrigerated.
00:18:09But always check expiration dates.
00:18:11I know I do.
00:18:15You see these blades?
00:18:16They have notched corners to make your cutting experience smoother.
00:18:20Ooh.
00:18:20The front edge notch helps with separating blades during manufacturing, while the trailing edge notch helps the blade glide easily.
00:18:29And a fun fact.
00:18:31That notch on the front also helps you spot unused sections of the blade.
00:18:35Just a little visual indicator to make your life easier.
00:18:38When it comes to silver versus black blades, they're both made from the same stuff.
00:18:43But black blades are sharper and are better suited for cutting through tough materials.
00:18:48While silver blades strike a balance between cutting power and durability.
00:18:53If you want that extra cutting oomph, go for black.
00:18:56Oh, almost forgot.
00:18:58The only thing those blades aren't meant to cut is food.
00:19:01It has a rust-proofing oil coating, which is not safe for humans.
00:19:07Check this one out.
00:19:08It's totally giving me childhood vibes.
00:19:10Now, I remember my grandma having tomato-shaped pin cushions just like this.
00:19:15And sometimes they would look more like a salad, with a little pepper thrown in there.
00:19:20Well, believe it or not, this salad actually has a purpose.
00:19:24The tomato keeps your pins in place, while the pepper keeps them sharp.
00:19:29Those peppers are filled with sand, which helps keep your pins nice and sharp.
00:19:33And it's not just sand.
00:19:35Crushed walnuts can also be used to keep your pins in tip-top shape.
00:19:40Now, look at this multiple-pocket tool and this little hook on it.
00:19:45It's a bit of a mystery, but it's actually pretty handy.
00:19:48I counted at least four different applications.
00:19:51One, you can use it to carry all sorts of awkward stuff, like camping gear or heavy parcels.
00:19:57Two, need to twist some wire or play around with knots?
00:20:00The parcel hook has got you covered.
00:20:03Three, this hook can save the day with those stubborn zippers, like the ones on your luggage.
00:20:08Four, it's great for pretending to be a budget version of Captain Hook.
00:20:13If you know more applications, let me know in the comments.
00:20:18Apple users, with this feature, you'll never get laundry surprises again.
00:20:23Now, I bet you've had this situation at least once in your life.
00:20:26You wash your stuff, and when you take it out of the washing machine, the size seems to only fit
00:20:32your cat.
00:20:32Your iPhone camera can actually translate those funky laundry symbols for you.
00:20:37There are two requirements, though.
00:20:39You must have iOS 17, and your phone must be in English.
00:20:43Take a photo of the care label, go to the Photos app, and see the details of the image.
00:20:49Everything will be automatically decoded and explained to you.
00:20:54Now, many toasters come with nifty, removable crumb trays at the bottom.
00:20:58It's super important to give these trays a good clean every now and then to keep your toaster running smoothly
00:21:04and avoid any potential fire hazards.
00:21:07Just pop them out, shake out the crumbs, and you're good to go.
00:21:10Where you shake them out is up to you.
00:21:13Those little compartments on your gas pump aren't just for show.
00:21:16They're actually there to hold your cap while you're filling up.
00:21:19This nifty feature keeps things tidy and prevents any spills or drips on the handle.
00:21:25So, say goodbye to messy refueling experiences and hello to a cleaner pump.
00:21:30Plus, it makes the whole process way more convenient and efficient.
00:21:36Now, I'll bet your oven gets so greasy and dirty sometimes that you can even hear it oink.
00:21:42Just kidding.
00:21:43I know you're a tidy person.
00:21:44Anyway, if you're looking for a way to bring your kitchen cleaning to a whole new level, here's a tip
00:21:50for you.
00:21:51Most oven doors have handy latches that let you pop the door off for easy cleaning, saving your pore back
00:21:58from the strain.
00:22:00When you're draining noodles or potatoes, there's no need to bother transferring everything to a colander in the sink.
00:22:06Just throw the colander right into the pot, hold it down, and pour the liquid out.
00:22:12It makes life so much easier, especially when you want to save that starchy water for recipes.
00:22:17It's a must for authentic pasta, by the way.
00:22:22So, let's say you've snagged this gem at a thrift store a while back for just under a dollar.
00:22:27It's seen better days, serving as an ashtray, but you decide it's time to give it a new lease on
00:22:33life.
00:22:34Here's the lowdown on how to make it shine again.
00:22:37Mix up a solution of boiling water, baking soda, and table salt in a bowl lined with aluminum foil.
00:22:44Let the piece soak for about 15 minutes and repeat this process three times.
00:22:50In between soaks, gently scrub any rough spots with a microfiber cloth.
00:22:55After the final soak, dry the piece off and rub on some toothpaste, baking soda, and peroxide.
00:23:01Buff out any remaining tarnish with a clean, dry microfiber cloth.
00:23:06Rinse it off, and now your piece is practically gleaming like a mirror.
00:23:12These aluminum foil boxes have nifty little tabs on the sides that make it super easy to grab a sheet
00:23:18without any hassle.
00:23:20It's like a fancy little bonus that makes the product a breeze and ensures you'll have a smooth sailing experience
00:23:26every time.
00:23:29Manual can openers often come with a handy built-in feature, also known as a bottle opener.
00:23:35It's like getting two tools in one.
00:23:37But did you know that this bottle opener actually has another useful function?
00:23:42It can help you loosen those stubborn, hard-to-open jars.
00:23:45Simply lift the lid slightly at a couple of points with the bottle opener,
00:23:50and then watch it as it effortlessly twists right off.
00:23:56Okay, I just found that, apparently, you're supposed to save the first and last slices of a loaf of sliced
00:24:02bread for last.
00:24:03It's like a bread hack or something.
00:24:06Apparently, those end pieces help keep the rest of the bread fresher for longer,
00:24:10and you shouldn't eat them until you've devoured the rest of the loaf.
00:24:13So, next time you're making a sandwich, save those heel slices for the very end.
00:24:18Even bread-eating needs a good strategy.
00:24:21Now, look at those blue levers on the top rack of your dishwasher.
00:24:25I was curious about them, too.
00:24:27And it turns out they are actually water bottle sprayers.
00:24:30They help to ensure that your bottles get a thorough cleaning and rinse during the wash cycle.
00:24:37Many vegetable peelers have those little scoops on top for taking out the eyes from potatoes.
00:24:42And here's a cool tip.
00:24:44You can actually use vegetable peelers in both directions to peel faster.
00:24:48But most people just stick to one direction.
00:24:53When using yellow mustard, make sure to push the lid of the bottle all the way open until you hear
00:24:58a satisfying click.
00:25:00This way, the lid will stay securely in place and won't get in the way when you're dispensing the mustard
00:25:05onto your food.
00:25:06It's a simple step that can make your condiment experience hassle-free and enjoyable.
00:25:12So there.
00:25:14You know that little hole at the end of your pot or pan?
00:25:17Well, it's not just for show.
00:25:19You can actually use it as a handy holder for your forks and spoons.
00:25:23Next time you're cooking up a storm in the kitchen, just pop your utensils in that convenient little hole and
00:25:29keep them close at hand.
00:25:32Okay, just a heads-up to remember to switch the direction of your ceiling fan for the changing weather and
00:25:39to give it a good clean, too.
00:25:41I've seen that a lot of folks found it helpful before to reverse the fan's direction by flipping a switch
00:25:47for different seasons.
00:25:48So this is just a friendly reminder to go ahead and do it again, pushing hot air down and pulling
00:25:54cold air up.
00:25:57When you're chowing down for some pizza, just tear off the top of the box and use it as a
00:26:03big old plate.
00:26:04You can even rip the box in half and fold it to save some leftovers for later.
00:26:09Well, that's it for today.
00:26:10What, you want to know more cool facts?
00:26:13Sure, but you'll have to subscribe and hit the bell to get more videos.
00:26:17I'm waiting.
00:26:18Go ahead.
00:26:22You know how they say, when in Rome, do as the Romans do?
00:26:26Meaning, in Rome, you need to make sure your goldfish has a deluxe bowl to live in.
00:26:32In Nigeria, don't you dare to bring your own wheelbarrow.
00:26:36And perish the thought of adding as much mayo as you want to your dish when you're in France.
00:26:41Yep, bands around the world may be surprising, to say the least.
00:26:46Number 1.
00:26:47You will never see a good old doorknob in Vancouver, Canada.
00:26:51Some time ago, the city changed its building code to require the use of cool and sleek door levers instead.
00:26:57This change is all about making buildings more accessible and easier to use.
00:27:01Not only new buildings are getting a new makeover.
00:27:04Even Vancouver's historic city hall had its fancy Art Deco doorknobs replaced with shiny gold levers.
00:27:11But it's not that you can't legally have it in your house.
00:27:14There isn't a team of doorknob police coming to your house to confiscate your knobs.
00:27:19You can keep them as long as you like.
00:27:23Number 2 comes with a geoguessertip for y'all.
00:27:26If you see this chair in the picture, it means it's 100% not in Basel, Switzerland.
00:27:32It's called a monoblock chair, and it's special.
00:27:35You see, most objects give away clues about when and where they're from,
00:27:38like the shape of electrical outlets or the labels on your shampoo bottle.
00:27:43But the monoblock is context-free.
00:27:45Some people call them one of the world's most perfectly designed objects,
00:27:49while others say the homogenous nature of the chair is disturbing and the real evil of globalization.
00:27:55But why is it banned in Basel?
00:27:57Turns out the authorities just want the city to be pretty, and the chair design isn't to their liking.
00:28:03Right, if you want to keep one in your backyard, feel free.
00:28:06But they've been a big no in public spaces since 2008.
00:28:133. If you were ever thinking of bringing a wheelbarrow to Nigeria, I've got some news for you.
00:28:19Don't even try.
00:28:20Should you need it for some reason during your stay in Nigeria, just buy one there when you arrive.
00:28:26The authorities won't let you bring your imported wheelbarrow across the border.
00:28:30Why? Well, they're all about supporting their own manufacturing industry.
00:28:34So they want to give their local wheelbarrow makers a chance to shine.
00:28:40At number 4, we've got China, where the authorities decided to put a stop to time travel.
00:28:46Wait a minute, it's not what you think.
00:28:48No time travel machine has been invented.
00:28:50The ban is on TV shows and movies.
00:28:53By the way, it's not something new.
00:28:54The law was introduced in the early 2010s.
00:28:58Apparently, the big shots in charge want to keep things real and are not too keen on distorting historical events.
00:29:05They say some scripts are getting a bit too wild, making up myths, promoting superstition, and disrespecting the country's past.
00:29:145. Coffee pods
00:29:15They've become super popular because they make brewing coffee so easy.
00:29:19But Hamburg, Germany doesn't seem to be a fan of those pods.
00:29:23Around 8 years ago, they took a stand by banning plastic coffee pods from authorities' offices.
00:29:29These little pods are made of various materials, making recycling a real challenge.
00:29:33While it's true that these coffee capsules can create a lot of problems, they're still loved by many.
00:29:39In fact, they've become a big hit in the US and Europe, making up a chunk of the coffee market.
00:29:45Hamburg is hoping to lead the way in showing people just how wasteful these pods really are.
00:29:51Number 6. Chewing gum
00:29:53It has been banned in Singapore since 1992.
00:29:57The ban was put in place to stop people from sticking gum in all sorts of weird places, like subway
00:30:03doors, lock cylinders, and elevator buttons.
00:30:06Yuck!
00:30:07But costly train shenanigans were the last straw for the authorities.
00:30:10The ban was put in place after some serious gum incidents on the Mass Rapid Transit, or MRT, trains in
00:30:17the late 80s.
00:30:18Some mischievous or mischievous pranksters have been gumming up the works on MRT trains by sticking chewing gum on the
00:30:25door sensors.
00:30:26That caused a sticky situation and messed up train services.
00:30:30And there you have it. Chewing gum got completely banned.
00:30:33Now, just a note here. Yep, these are gums prescribed for therapeutic or dental reasons.
00:30:39And yep, they're still allowed.
00:30:41Also, don't get this whole ban wrong. It's not illegal to chew gum in Singapore.
00:30:45So if you come there as a tourist, you can bring in a little gum for personal use if you're
00:30:50traveling.
00:30:51Just do not stick it under this nice park bench, okay?
00:30:54What will create you a ton of troubles, though, is importing and selling chewing gum.
00:31:02Iceland is number 7 in our ban hit parade.
00:31:05Back in 1994, Reykjavik was like, no dogs allowed.
00:31:09It wasn't because they were all about cats.
00:31:11It was to stop this nasty tapeworm from spreading.
00:31:14The disease was serious business, causing all sorts of health problems.
00:31:19But don't worry, dogs are cool now as long as they follow the rules.
00:31:23Nowadays, in Reykjavik, it's all about the cats.
00:31:26They're everywhere, roaming the streets like they, you know, own the place.
00:31:30You can't walk two steps without seeing a furry little friend begging for attention.
00:31:35These Reykjavik kitties are so popular that they even have their own Facebook page.
00:31:39People love them, and some even carry around treats just in case they come across a friendly feline.
00:31:46And since there aren't many threats to cats in Iceland, they're thriving.
00:31:518. The Philippines
00:31:52Now, this one is really weird.
00:31:54Singing my way in karaoke bars is sort of banned in this country.
00:31:59This seemingly harmless song has been linked to some pretty serious consequences,
00:32:03like fistfights and even people's early demise.
00:32:07No one knows the exact number of lethal cases caused by this song,
00:32:11but there have been at least a handful of incidents in the last 10 years.
00:32:14The song's lyrics, which can come off as a bit arrogant and prideful,
00:32:19seem to rile people up when sung in a not-so-great way.
00:32:22This has led some karaoke bars to unofficially ban the song to prevent any craziness from breaking out.
00:32:309. Hey, have you heard about Japan's Metabo Law?
00:32:34It's all about measuring waist sizes to tackle obesity.
00:32:37It was introduced in 2008, and the idea was that if companies and local authorities didn't meet the goals,
00:32:44they would face financial penalties.
00:32:46The Ministry of Health believed this campaign would help prevent various health conditions.
00:32:51So, every year, people aged 40 to 75 had to get their waist measured.
00:32:57Employers and local authorities needed to make sure at least 65% of people participated.
00:33:03The goal was to reduce Japan's obesity rates by 25% by 2015.
00:33:08And if they hadn't made it, they would have gotten slapped with a fine.
00:33:12Did it work?
00:33:12Well, in 2024, there were only 4.5% of people who reportedly have weight issues in Japan.
00:33:21Number 10. And we're back to Canada.
00:33:24So, if you catch someone in there counting out pennies in line, you can totally have some fun with them.
00:33:29Legally speaking, of course.
00:33:31According to the Canadian Currency Act, there's a limit to the number of pennies you can use in a transaction.
00:33:3625, to be exact.
00:33:38So, if someone tries using 26 coins, you can play sheriff and send them to coin jail.
00:33:44Snatch up their pennies as evidence.
00:33:46Yeah.
00:33:4811. And a condiment-regulated country here.
00:33:51Apparently, in France, they're cracking down on condiments in public schools.
00:33:56They're trying to make meals healthier for students.
00:33:58The rule is that you can't just go crazy with mayo, ketchup, and vinaigrette anymore.
00:34:03They have to be served according to the dish.
00:34:07Finally, Italy.
00:34:09In Rome, you can't keep your goldfish in a boring old glass bowl.
00:34:13Nope, that's considered cruel, because those little guys need their oxygen flow.
00:34:18Plus, if you keep them in a bowl for too long, they might go blind.
00:34:22Also, you can't give away goldfish's prizes.
00:34:25The law has a whole subsection about it.
00:34:27So, if you're planning on bringing a goldfish home from your next trip to Rome,
00:34:31make sure you've got a fancy tank ready for them.
00:34:34And thank you for watching!
00:34:39Have a good look at the front of your sweatshirt.
00:34:41Okay, let's ignore the pizza stains for now.
00:34:44Ever notice that V-shape right at the bottom of the collar?
00:34:47That small V-patch isn't just a decoration.
00:34:49It serves more than one purpose.
00:34:51Made from a double layer of webbing material, just like waistbands and cuffs,
00:34:55these inserts allowed the wearer to put on the sweater without losing any shape over time.
00:35:00As the sweatshirt would be pulled down over the head,
00:35:03the V-insert would stretch and flex to allow a lot of wiggle room.
00:35:07The other benefit the V-pattern gives is to absorb all that sweat.
00:35:10The chest is a major area of perspiring.
00:35:14Just look at soaked shirts after doing something physical.
00:35:17Although, the V-insert can only take so much.
00:35:21That extra pocket on the right side of a suit jacket is called the ticket pocket.
00:35:25They used to store coins for people on horseback to pay tollbooths without opening their jackets.
00:35:30When train travel became more popular, they were perfect for tickets and passes.
00:35:35As for the left chest pocket, it's used to store handkerchiefs,
00:35:38keeping them away from the other cluttered and dirty pockets.
00:35:42Metallic zippers have a hidden lock built in.
00:35:44Next time you've put on a pair of pants, shorts, or skirt,
00:35:47never leave the zipper handle in an upward position.
00:35:50Push the little zipper tab downwards, and it'll automatically lock.
00:35:54To mute your annoying beeping microwave, look closely at the front panel for a sound button.
00:36:00It may have been there all along, just begging to be pressed.
00:36:03If there's no button, try pressing and holding 1, 0, stop, or cancel.
00:36:08It will either result in turning off the beeping sounds or activating a lock feature.
00:36:13Of course, if your microwave doesn't have any mute function at all,
00:36:16you'll just have to keep running to stop the timer late at night.
00:36:20Nintendo's Switch cartridges have a hidden safety function,
00:36:23and it's going to leave a bad taste in your mouth.
00:36:25Although non-toxic, denatonium benzoate coats the cartridge in a sour, peppery, and bitter substance
00:36:31to prevent kiddos from swallowing them.
00:36:34This chemical compound is one of the most bitter flavors known to humanity,
00:36:38commonly used to keep people from consuming things they're not meant to.
00:36:42There's not much privacy while using a public toilet,
00:36:45especially when the door doesn't reach the floor at all.
00:36:47But these gaps are there for emergency access,
00:36:50in case the person inside needs immediate help.
00:36:53The gap also works for ventilation, thank goodness,
00:36:56and to stop people from lingering around the toilet too long.
00:37:00Toothpicks have a built-in holder to prevent you from just leaving them on the table.
00:37:04Just break off the top, it's that simple.
00:37:06Place that on your table and your toothpick between the notches.
00:37:10Pointy end up, of course.
00:37:11Now, it won't touch the table and get all dirty.
00:37:14You can do the same with disposable chopsticks.
00:37:17Break off the top piece before you pull them apart.
00:37:20Those tiny dimples on golf balls actually give a greater lift to the ball
00:37:24and reduce air resistance, meaning the ball can go further with them.
00:37:28These dimples come in spherical and hexagonal shapes,
00:37:31with each slightest change affecting the ball's performance.
00:37:34So, choose them carefully.
00:37:36Plastic wrap boxes have hidden little holders that stop the roll from jumping out of the box.
00:37:41They're little cardboard tabs on the sides that lock into the tube inside
00:37:45while making it easy to glide the film out.
00:37:49Just push them in and never be frustrated again.
00:37:52Gosh, I wish that would work with other stuff.
00:37:54The seven spikes on top of the Statue of Liberty's crown
00:37:57don't represent the seven seas and the seven continents at all.
00:38:01They're representing the sun's rays,
00:38:03giving a halo to show that she is divine.
00:38:06In the United States, 12 different Federal Reserve Banks print all the money.
00:38:11So, if you want to know where your money comes from,
00:38:14just look for these small codes.
00:38:16A1, Boston.
00:38:17B2, New York.
00:38:18C3, Philadelphia.
00:38:20D4, Cleveland.
00:38:21E5, Richmond.
00:38:23F6, Atlanta.
00:38:25G7, Chicago.
00:38:26H8, St. Louis.
00:38:28I9, Minneapolis.
00:38:30J10, Kansas City.
00:38:31K11, Big D, Little A, Double L-A-A-S.
00:38:35It's a song.
00:38:36L12, San Francisco.
00:38:38Never call it Frisco.
00:38:40Meanwhile, the bristles on the side of every escalator
00:38:43are in place to encourage people to stay away from the edge,
00:38:46meaning they're less likely to face a mishap with a trapped bag or shoelace.
00:38:51Did you hear about the octopus caught on the escalator?
00:38:53It was a stretch.
00:38:54Old-fashioned pin cushions that are large tomato with a strawberry attached
00:38:58are more than a place for your needles.
00:39:01The strawberry contains an emery board.
00:39:03When you stick your pins and needles into the strawberry,
00:39:06the emery board keeps them rust-free and sharpens them as well.
00:39:10Some people still forget to engage the hose from their car after filling up with gas.
00:39:15Luckily, a lot of gas companies realize this.
00:39:17So, if you happen to drive off with a hose still attached to your car,
00:39:21there's a magnetic connector that disengages when pulled.
00:39:24Those different colored bread tags use a color-coded system to show the day that they were baked.
00:39:30They are usually blue tags for Mondays, green tags for Tuesdays,
00:39:34red tags Thursdays, white tags Fridays, and yellow tags for Saturdays.
00:39:39On the back of most beauty products,
00:39:41you'll find a small symbol on the back that indicates how long it'll stay good for.
00:39:45For example, 2M means two months after opening.
00:39:49Some jackets have those extra flaps with a button on the shoulder,
00:39:53and they actually have a use.
00:39:55These are perfectly designed for holding your purse, backpack, or bag in place and secure.
00:40:00Pom-poms on the top of beanies were never just a fashion statement.
00:40:04They were for protection, placed on top of the headwear to protect sailors
00:40:08from accidentally hitting their heads while moving around on a ship.
00:40:12Pom-poms touch the roof, so don't go any higher.
00:40:15They don't appear on every type of measuring tape,
00:40:18but diamonds or black circles are there to help contractors
00:40:21measure the proper placement of studs in a wall.
00:40:25Those little holes on your baseball cap aren't some fashion trends
00:40:29that stuck around for years and have never been changed.
00:40:31These holes are actually called eyelets,
00:40:34and they're to keep your head well-ventilated, not for appearance.
00:40:37If you have YKK printed on your zipper,
00:40:41they're not some secret code to be cracked.
00:40:42Those three letters appear on so many zippers globally
00:40:45because they're the symbol of the world's most universal zipper manufacturer,
00:40:50the YKK Group.
00:40:52Every can of soda comes with a tab for easy opening of the tasty beverage,
00:40:56and every single one of them has a relatively large hole in the top.
00:41:00While it can make it easier to get your finger under the tab to get your soda,
00:41:04its intended purpose is a straw holder.
00:41:07Spin the tab over the opening and place your straw through it to secure it in.
00:41:12Disposable lids do a great job of keeping your drink inside the cup,
00:41:15but that's not its only purpose.
00:41:17When you're ready to sip on your drink,
00:41:19the lid has specially designed ridges to double it as a coaster
00:41:22and hold on to the bottom of your beverage tightly.
00:41:25The tiny black dot between the lens and the flash on the back of your iPhone
00:41:30is actually for a great purpose.
00:41:32It's the third microphone to provide superior sound quality
00:41:35by eliminating background noises
00:41:37and to pick up your voice much clearer in a crowded environment.
00:41:41Gas cans that have two holes with caps
00:41:44aren't there to fill different-sized equipment.
00:41:46The second hole is meant to be uncapped
00:41:49before you pour your gas to prevent that glugging effect.
00:41:52By allowing more airflow through, the smoother the gas will pour out.
00:41:56That little arrow next to the gas symbol on your car's dashboard
00:42:00shows you which side your gas tank is on.
00:42:03It'll help you when you go fill up your gas tank,
00:42:05especially if you're borrowing a different car than your own.
00:42:09Look at a check and see MP near the signature line.
00:42:13That means the check printer used micro print
00:42:15as one of the check security features.
00:42:17The lines look like a regular line to the untrained eye,
00:42:21but they're words like the bank's name,
00:42:23authorized signature, United States government,
00:42:25or even original document.
00:42:28That little disc that's underneath bottles
00:42:30isn't just a leftover part of the production process.
00:42:33It creates an even tighter seal with the lid.
00:42:36So even if the bottle was turned upside down,
00:42:39the liquid doesn't leak out everywhere.
00:42:41The plastic disc keeps carbonated sodas carbonated
00:42:44for longer with this seal.
00:42:46The indent in the bottom of wine bottles is called a punt.
00:42:49But it's not just something to help you hold on to the bottle.
00:42:53The punt makes the wine bottle stronger,
00:42:55so if dropped, the cork won't fly across the room with all that pressure.
00:42:59Now here's a trick.
00:43:00Instead of putting the box grater vertically on top of a plate,
00:43:04put it horizontally, with no plate underneath, of course.
00:43:07This way, you won't risk scraping your knuckles,
00:43:09because only your fingertips will eventually touch the grater
00:43:12when you reach the end of the process.
00:43:14Also, it gives the grater more stability,
00:43:17when otherwise, you'd have to balance the grater
00:43:19or even hold it in the air with the other hand.
00:43:22When you're done,
00:43:23or when there's just too much grated stuff on the bottom wall of the grater,
00:43:27simply turn it on its side to pour the contents into the bowl or plate.
00:43:31Flowers in a vase would stay fresher for longer,
00:43:34if not for the bacteria that breed in the water.
00:43:36Since copper has some antibacterial properties,
00:43:40dropping a penny into the water will help keep the microbes at bay,
00:43:43and let you enjoy your flowers for that little bit longer.
00:43:47An easy way to check if your bed linen has dried completely
00:43:50is to put a small mirror in between the layers for about 5 minutes.
00:43:54If the mirror has steamed up when you pick it up,
00:43:57it means the sheets are still a bit damp.
00:43:59Let them dry until the mirror stops getting cloudy.
00:44:02A damp bed is a lovely breeding ground for fungi and bacteria.
00:44:07Okay, I'm in.
00:44:09If you have a not-very-healthy habit of eating in front of your computer,
00:44:14you'll be surprised at how much crumbs and grime there is inside your keyboard.
00:44:19Now, you can just turn it over and shake it vigorously, of course.
00:44:22But that's not very good for any piece of tech, you know.
00:44:25So instead, take a post-it note and run its sticky part over the keyboard.
00:44:31It will collect the little pieces of trash like magic.
00:44:33Even a better way to do it, though, is to take a slime and stick it to the keyboard.
00:44:39Then take it away, squeeze it, and stick again in another part.
00:44:43The slime will fill the entire space between the keys,
00:44:46and its sticky properties will let it gather every little bit of garbage.
00:44:50Separating egg yolks from whites is easier using a plastic bottle.
00:44:55Break the necessary number of eggs into a bowl,
00:44:57and then take an empty plastic bottle and squeeze it.
00:45:01Hold the bottle over the yolk and release.
00:45:03It'll pull in air and the yolk together, leaving the white in the bowl.
00:45:08Repeat with the rest of the yolks, and you're done!
00:45:10And that's no yolk!
00:45:12If you're tired of spitting out the stones when eating cherries
00:45:16or want to make a cherry pie, push the stones out with a straw.
00:45:20Also, many garlic presses have a special tool on their handle
00:45:23that can be used exactly for that.
00:45:26Cleaning a blender can be a nuisance if you do it manually.
00:45:29Instead, fill it with hot water and add some liquid soap or detergent,
00:45:34then run it for about 10 seconds.
00:45:36Rinse it afterwards, and it's clean.
00:45:38Plaster walls can crumble, flake, and spread dust all over the floor
00:45:42when you hammer nails into it.
00:45:44Cut a strip of masking tape and stick it to the place you want to hammer a nail in.
00:45:49The tape won't let the plaster crack and crumble, leaving the hole neat and clean.
00:45:54Small scratches and dents on wooden furniture can be removed with some toothpaste or a walnut.
00:46:01For toothpaste, rub a pea-sized amount of it into the scratch until it's gone,
00:46:05then wipe the leftovers with a damp cloth.
00:46:08For a walnut, take a half of that brain-shaped nut and rub it into the dent.
00:46:13Then rub the area with your fingers and buff it with a soft cloth.
00:46:17This'll help the wood absorb the oil from the nut, making the scratch sealed and gone.
00:46:23The sticky residue on jars left after you remove the stickers won't be easily removed by water and detergent.
00:46:29So take some vegetable oil instead.
00:46:32Soak a cotton pad in it and wipe the sticky surface.
00:46:35Let it sit for a while and then wash the oil away together with the residue.
00:46:40If you can't comfortably reach the wick of a candle with a lighter,
00:46:44hey, take a stick of spaghetti.
00:46:46Light up its end and you'll get a burning stick that's easy to use for hard-to-reach places.
00:46:52Now, next time your razor blade's getting dull,
00:46:55try rubbing it backwards on a pair of jeans for regular upkeep.
00:46:59Not while you're wearing them, of course.
00:47:00Make sure you keep the blades dry, too, or even kept in mineral oil.
00:47:04That'll stop them from rusting.
00:47:06Keep all those jelly, ketchup, peanut butter, and mayo fresher for longer in your fridge
00:47:12by turning the contents upside down.
00:47:14This creates a partial vacuum inside the container, helping prevent mold growth.
00:47:20Storing ice cream upside down will prevent freezer burn, too.
00:47:23To bring your permanent marker back to life,
00:47:26simply put a few drops of rubbing alcohol into the felt material inside and shake.
00:47:31Once the felt absorbs the rubbing alcohol for a couple of minutes,
00:47:35the marker will be almost as good as new.
00:47:38Now, don't keep throwing away lettuce that goes black too quickly.
00:47:42Covering it with a dry paper towel and then placing it in an airtight container
00:47:46will help it keep fresher for much longer.
00:47:49This goes for any leafy greens you've got leftovers of.
00:47:53That sharpish bit sticking out of the cap of your favorite cream is there for a reason.
00:47:58These tubes are usually sealed with foil,
00:48:01so unless you love breaking your nails trying to open them,
00:48:04just flip the cap over and push.
00:48:06Your bobby pins might not stay in place if the grooves aren't facing the right way.
00:48:11They should always be on the bottom, close to your head.
00:48:14Still coming loose?
00:48:16Well, put a squeeze of hairspray right onto the bobby pin before you put it in your hair.
00:48:20Now, your cotton rounds pack has those strings on it,
00:48:24so you can hang it on a handy hook in the bathroom.
00:48:27But there's no need to loosen and tighten it back up every time.
00:48:31Check out the bottom of the pack.
00:48:33It has a perforated line.
00:48:34Tear it open carefully, and you're good to go.
00:48:38Two zips too much?
00:48:39Maybe.
00:48:40But they come in handy as a clever anti-theft device.
00:48:43Just lock them together.
00:48:45Now, no one can open your backpack.
00:48:47Don't have a lock on you?
00:48:49You can also tie them together with some string, or even just a paper clip.
00:48:53Anything to slow those pickpockets down.
00:48:56That tiny little button on the back of a shirt collar is used to hold your tie in place.
00:49:01Hey, you don't want your tie trying to escape back there.
00:49:05Shoe manufacturers care about their customers.
00:49:08So, most running shoes now have a special anti-blister system pre-installed.
00:49:13Sounds intense, but it's basically just that extra hole on top of your sneakers.
00:49:18Make a loop with the extra hole, inserting the lace backward.
00:49:22Cross your laces and put them through the loops.
00:49:24Now, pull the laces down to lock your foot in place.
00:49:28Now, run.
00:49:29Yeah, go ahead.
00:49:30Car headrests are all about comfort, and detachable headrests are all about safety.
00:49:36If you pull the headrest out, you'll see two sturdy metal bars.
00:49:40If you ever get locked or trapped in your car, you can use the bars to smash the window and
00:49:45get out.
00:49:46If you've got some pesky parsley stuck in your teeth, try this tip.
00:49:50It can be hard to get it out with loose floss.
00:49:53You need more tension, so just tie it in a knot.
00:49:57It's not an accident that soy sauce bottles have two spouts.
00:50:01The sauce is liquid, and it flows out of the bottle pretty easily once you turn it over.
00:50:05Most Asian food lovers have spilled it at least once in a lifetime.
00:50:09That's why nowadays, restaurants prefer serving soy sauce in special bottles that have two spouts.
00:50:16This design allows you to control when and how much sauce will come out.
00:50:20Just put your finger on one spout when you pour the sauce through another.
00:50:24If you press your finger tightly to the spout, the sauce will stop flowing,
00:50:28and if you remove your finger, it'll flow again.
00:50:31And don't forget to ask your server,
00:50:34Hey, wasabi!
00:50:36A hair straightener is an excellent tool not only for treating your natural curls,
00:50:41but also for fixing crumpled money or documents.
00:50:44You can also use a regular iron for this purpose.
00:50:47Just make sure you don't turn on steaming mode.
00:50:50Otherwise, there's a risk of damaging the paper.
00:50:53Hair bands are good not only for getting your hair done,
00:50:56but also to open a glass jar with canned food.
00:50:58Your hands might slip on the tightly closed lid,
00:51:01and if you don't open the can from the first attempt,
00:51:04your palms tend to get sweaty, making the task virtually impossible.
00:51:09So, put a hair band on the lid to fix your hand and make your grasp stronger.
00:51:14A simple rubber band will do as well.
00:51:17Now, it's time to take my sweaty palms and go.
00:51:21So, grab your phone.
00:51:23Good.
00:51:23Now, turn it around.
00:51:25You see that little dot between the camera and the flash?
00:51:28That's a tiny microphone.
00:51:30Bet that's something you didn't know.
00:51:32What's it doing there?
00:51:33Well, when you're on a phone call,
00:51:35this little guy is busy at work,
00:51:37reducing the amount of background noise other people hear when you talk.
00:51:41That's right.
00:51:42If it wasn't for this,
00:51:44calls wouldn't be as nearly as crisp as they are now.
00:51:48You're lost in the woods,
00:51:49and you're rushing to get back to camp.
00:51:52You suddenly remember you've got something that can help.
00:51:55You grab one of your chest straps from your backpack and whistle on it.
00:52:01Yup, that's right.
00:52:02A lot of bags have this feature in them,
00:52:04especially the ones made for the outdoors.
00:52:07It isn't long before you hear the call of one of your friends,
00:52:10and you follow them back to the warm campfire,
00:52:13saved by this cool bit of design.
00:52:16If you're a curious person,
00:52:18you might have wondered
00:52:19what that little pocket in your jeans is doing there.
00:52:22You know, the one that's inside the bigger pocket?
00:52:25People often use it to store coins and bills,
00:52:28but it's not meant for that.
00:52:30It's actually designed to store your pocket watch safely.
00:52:33Huh?
00:52:34Maybe that's where the name pocket watch comes from?
00:52:39You finally arrive home after a long day's work.
00:52:42You understandably don't feel like cooking,
00:52:45so you sit on the couch and watch a bit of TV and order some takeout.
00:52:49How about Chinese?
00:52:51Ah, perfect.
00:52:52There's the doorbell.
00:52:54That has to be your food!
00:52:55It smells delicious!
00:52:57Wait!
00:52:58Before you grab the plates, do this instead.
00:53:01Open your Chinese food container on the table.
00:53:03It becomes the perfect plate,
00:53:05and it's cardboard.
00:53:08Which means no cleaning either.
00:53:10That can of soda you got with your food has a cool feature too.
00:53:15Look at the tiny metal tab there,
00:53:17the one you use to open the can.
00:53:19Guess what?
00:53:20You can fit your straw in there.
00:53:22In fact, that's exactly what they're made for.
00:53:24Go ahead, try it for yourself.
00:53:28If you're not at your computer,
00:53:30take a look at your keyboard right now.
00:53:31If you're not, that's okay.
00:53:33Here's one on the screen.
00:53:34The keycaps are arranged in what's called the QWERTY layout,
00:53:39named after the first six keycaps below the numbers.
00:53:42As it turns out, it wasn't always this way.
00:53:44They used to be laid out alphabetically,
00:53:47which would make more sense when you think about it.
00:53:49The alphabetical layout fell out of use because long ago,
00:53:53there were things called typewriters.
00:53:56Remember those?
00:53:57You pressed down a key,
00:53:59and a type bar would fly out,
00:54:01hitting an inked ribbon and stamping a letter on the piece of paper.
00:54:05Eventually, typists got good at this and typed faster.
00:54:09Too fast.
00:54:10The typebars would eventually get caught in a log jam with each other,
00:54:14ruining the flow.
00:54:15To fix this problem,
00:54:16they made keyboards with randomized keycaps.
00:54:19The new layout actually worked better
00:54:21because it made typing harder,
00:54:23helping to slow typists down
00:54:25and prevent the typebars from getting stuck.
00:54:28Much better!
00:54:29Today, no typebars.
00:54:30No typewriters, mostly.
00:54:32People are still fast nowadays,
00:54:34but you just can't help but wonder who was faster though,
00:54:38us or them?
00:54:39Keyboards have another hidden feature too.
00:54:42Have you ever noticed that the F keycap and the J keycap
00:54:45have little bumps on the bottom of them?
00:54:47As it turns out,
00:54:48they're there to help people figure out where they are on the keyboard
00:54:51without having to take their eyes off the screen.
00:54:56Grabbing a takeaway cup of coffee at your favorite cafe
00:54:58might be just what you need to fully wake up in the mornings.
00:55:02When you get back home or to work though,
00:55:05you might be afraid to stain your desk
00:55:07when you put the steaming hot coffee down.
00:55:10Worry not,
00:55:11your plastic lid isn't only good for keeping your coffee hot,
00:55:14it also doubles as a coaster.
00:55:17In fact,
00:55:17they're the perfect size to hold a cup.
00:55:19Try it for yourself.
00:55:22This one's going to come in handy if you're a home cook.
00:55:25If you're like me,
00:55:26you might have a bit of trouble
00:55:28deciding how much pasta you need for just one serving.
00:55:31Well,
00:55:32if you've got a pasta scoop,
00:55:33grab that.
00:55:34Most people don't know
00:55:36what the little hole in the middle is for
00:55:38and assume it's supposed to help with water drainage or something.
00:55:41It turns out that it helps you measure out a perfect serving.
00:55:45Just see how much dry spaghetti you can fit in the hole
00:55:48and use that as one portion.
00:55:52Out of the store buying coat hangers,
00:55:55you might notice that the plastic ones feel cheaper
00:55:57than the wooden ones.
00:55:58There's a good reason for this.
00:56:00Wooden hangers are made out of cedar wood.
00:56:03The big difference between the two
00:56:05is that the wooden ones repel bugs and moths.
00:56:09They're stronger and last longer too,
00:56:11perfect for things that might stay in your closet for a long time.
00:56:16When you brush your teeth,
00:56:18you might have noticed that your toothbrush has blue bristles.
00:56:21They're not just there for show.
00:56:23In fact,
00:56:23they're there to tell you
00:56:25when it might be time to switch toothbrushes.
00:56:28These bristles lose their strength and color
00:56:30when the brush has been worn down,
00:56:32letting you know that it's time to get rid of it.
00:56:36Microwaves often look a bit like mini TVs,
00:56:39especially ones where you can clearly see the black film around them.
00:56:43This is actually a really important feature
00:56:45that's used to keep the radiation from slipping away.
00:56:49They're called Faraday cages,
00:56:51if you want to get technical.
00:56:52This is why you can stand next to a microwave
00:56:55without melting into a puddle.
00:56:58That's not to say you should stand in front of the microwave
00:57:01and watch your food heat up,
00:57:02but at least you know you won't grow an extra ear or something.
00:57:06Okay, not really.
00:57:08Some ovens have a drawer under them.
00:57:10It's tempting to use this to store random junk you don't use often,
00:57:14but there's a better use for it.
00:57:16Instead, this should be used to help keep the food
00:57:18that's waiting to be served hot.
00:57:20You can take it out of the oven and store it right in this drawer,
00:57:24keeping your oven free for you to carry on cooking.
00:57:28Now, you're on a plane looking around
00:57:30trying to pass the time before takeoff.
00:57:33When you examine the window,
00:57:34you notice this has a little, very tiny hole on its bottom.
00:57:38Don't worry, it's not broken.
00:57:41It's there to relieve the pressure that builds up over time
00:57:44as the plane goes up and down.
00:57:46It also lets the air flow through it.
00:57:49Now, raise your hand if you've ever ridden on an escalator
00:57:52and scrubbed your shoes on its bristles.
00:57:54Hey, I'm guilty of doing that.
00:57:56Maybe more than I should.
00:57:57It's not there to clean your shoes, though.
00:57:59It's an important safety measure.
00:58:01It stops your shoelaces, clothing, and other stuff
00:58:04from getting stuck in there,
00:58:06avoiding a nasty scene when you go to get off.
00:58:10Sometimes a piece of fabric comes with your new clothing.
00:58:13It usually comes along with the extra buttons
00:58:16in a little plastic bag.
00:58:18You might think it's just a piece of fabric
00:58:20to use for future patching, in case you rip it.
00:58:22But that isn't its purpose at all.
00:58:25It's actually supposed to be put in the washing machine
00:58:28to test how it reacts to various washings.
00:58:31Now, you don't have to worry about shrinking
00:58:33your new, expensive coat
00:58:34because you know how it'll react to the wash.
00:58:38Bubbles!
00:58:38Who doesn't love bubbles?
00:58:40Most people have fond memories with bubble blowers as a kid.
00:58:43But as adults, the closest thing we can get
00:58:46to recapturing that feeling is with bubble baths.
00:58:49After a hard day at work,
00:58:51there's nothing better than dipping
00:58:52into a nice, warm bubble bath.
00:58:54Right, guys?
00:58:55And the bubbles do more than just clean you.
00:58:58If they're high-quality bubbles,
00:59:00they'll serve as a heat insulator.
00:59:02So they make sure that your bath stays warm for longer.
00:59:07Boxes of chocolate sometimes have
00:59:09these mysterious holes in them.
00:59:11When I'm eating a box, or two,
00:59:13I usually ignore them and take out the chocolate
00:59:16by pressing the bottom of the plastic.
00:59:18But it turns out that I've been doing it wrong
00:59:21the whole time.
00:59:22If you press one of the holes,
00:59:24the chocolate comes right out.
00:59:26I'm certainly going to start doing this from now on.
00:59:29Mm-hmm.
00:59:30Here's another one from the kitchen.
00:59:32The handle on a pot will often have a hole in it.
00:59:36Most people use this to hang them on a nail on the wall
00:59:39as an easy storage method.
00:59:41The hole has another use, too.
00:59:43When you're cooking, you can use this handle
00:59:45to hold your wooden spoon
00:59:47or whatever else you might be cooking with.
00:59:49This makes sure you don't make a mess
00:59:51when you put it down.
00:59:54Glass bottles usually come with a cap in them.
00:59:57Well, duh!
00:59:58Otherwise, the liquid would just spill.
01:00:01In this cap, there's a plastic liner
01:00:02that seemingly has no purpose, right?
01:00:05Wrong.
01:00:06It's a seal!
01:00:09No, not a seal.
01:00:10A seal!
01:00:11It's the kind that helps keep your drink fizzy.
01:00:14Ah, just the refreshment I needed.
01:00:17A lot of doorknobs are made out of brass,
01:00:20and it's not by chance.
01:00:21They're made out of this specific material
01:00:24because it's bacteria's worst enemy.
01:00:26That's right, it destroys them.
01:00:28Perfect for those who want to keep a clean house
01:00:31and avoid germs.
01:00:33Hey, you want to fish?
01:00:34Bye!
